  • Welcome back to the fireside, where we endeavour to bring weird literature back to life through (hopefully) captivating audiobook presentations.
In this installment, we present "Caterpillars" by the renowned author E.F. Benson. Join us as we journey back to the Edwardian era, a time of societal upheaval and hidden mysteries, through the enthralling narrative of this classic tale.
🦋 "Caterpillars," First published in 1905, is a curiously exquisite work by E.F. Benson, who invites us into a world where the boundaries between reality and the inexplicable blur. While society transforms from Victorian values to the dawn of the modern age, Benson captures this transition with his trademark finesse. His narrative prowess and unique perspective on human nature shine through in every word, offering readers a glimpse into a bygone era filled with secrets and strange surprises.
📖 E.F. Benson: A Literary Luminary of His Time:
Born in 1867, Edward Frederic Benson was a product of his time and a visionary who keenly observed the shifting tides of society. Drawing from his experiences and observations, he crafted stories that seamlessly blend wit, satire, and a deep understanding of the human psyche.
In "Caterpillars," Benson's expertise in character development and his knack for unravelling intricate plotlines are on full display.
    🌟 Exploring "Caterpillars":
As we are immersed in this supernatural tale, we are transported to a world where outward appearances often conceal hidden desires and complex emotions. Set on the Italian Riviera at the dawn of the 20th century, this tale introduces a small cast of characters whose lives intersect at the Vila Cascana. The narrative unfolds, and we witness a delicate dance between societal norms and sinister enigmatic forces. Benson's eloquent prose invites us to question the fine line between the natural and the supernatural, the mundane and the mysterious.
🎭The early 20th century was a time of rapid change, and "Caterpillars" reflects this metamorphosis.
🔮What sets "Caterpillars" apart is its subtle touch of the disturbing and uncanny. An undercurrent of mystery runs throughout the narrative. Themes of transformation, both literal and metaphorical, weave seamlessly into the plot as we edge toward the subtly chilling climax.
🎧 Our vision of "Caterpillars" is brought to life in this audiobook presentation. So whether you're a long-time fan of E.F. Benson or a newcomer to his world, prepare to be enchanted by this enduring little creature feature.
📚 Join us on this literary journey as we unravel the layers of "Caterpillars" and explore the strange, disturbing, and supernatural.

I read this story when I was 12 years old. We had 4 hedges in the garden each year were covered in red & black caterpillar’s with cobwebs. They terrified me. So you can imagine what I was like after reading this story, petrified to go to bed, the slightest touch making me wonder! This has to be one of the sickest creepiest stories Benson wrote. But what an anomaly, with cancer. Terrifying.

I certainly can imagine how this tale would have had an extra personal “edge” to it. It is amazing what the imagination can do, and well-written tales that touch on our experiences in some way only fuel that fancy!
This is indeed a creepy tale, and caterpillars (albeit weird ones that apparently cause cancer in some supernatural way) rather than a more malevolent seeming creature somehow make it more disturbing.😨

Hi, have you read ‘Afterward by Edith Wharton’ one of my favourite ghost stories. It is in a collection of short stories in the Roald Dahl book of “FEAR, Tales of Terror & Suspense” Absolutely love it.

👍I have read Afterward, and it is on my list of projects for the channel. I love it, too! Indeed, I am a huge Edith Wharton fan🎈. She wrote some seriously creepy and atmospheric stuff. I feel it needs a female voice to do it justice in the narration, but I’m working on that.🎙 I thought I’d first try another of my favourites, “Miss Mary Pask,” because the POV narrator is male.
I wanted to get “All Souls” up for November, but time has raced by.
It’s a mystery how Edith Wharton was never awarded the Nobel prize.🏆☺😊

@@scarystoriesbythefireside Sorry, only just found this reply today that you wrote four weeks ago. I was just watching Afterwards last night..Seen it so many times, but it still has a ‘piquancy edge’ to it that gets me every time. So pleased you are considering this ghost story for your collection. Oh! you think a female should read Afterwards. You have a female reading another of your stories, but I have to be honest, for me the high pitch with no variation in tone, did not come across as scary. Not having any graphics did not help and left the voice to carry off all of the story. You, have the right tone of voice for narrating. Good clarity and articulation with personality. You create a sense of narrative spooky intimacy that is needed to communicate with your audience. Your Northern accent helps impart the quality of tone needed for the type of readings you do. Happy Narrating 🗣️

Afterward is a wonderful ghost story. I’m going to attempt to put all her creepy work up eventually. That Edith Wharton could write! One of my Favourites is “All Souls” which is sad and moving as well as being disturbing.
Oh yes, that was the second video I did. I didn’t do much work at all on that one. I thought I’d experiment a bit because most of these public domain readings on here seem to just have a single placeholder type image throughout the timeline. It certainly quickened the production process. But you are so right of course. It felt a bit like “phoning it in” and, at the end of the day, this is a video platform so something visual should be happening too. The actress I commissioned to read the story is a great narrator I think, perhaps more suited to period straight fiction. I really wish I’d given her a better story to read.😂 There are many better Rhoda Broughton tales and Under the Cloak is a bit of a dud for sure.
That is so kind of you to say that about my reading🤗. I intend to do much more of it. Your encouragement is inspiring and now I’m eager to get cracking. I’m going to have a bash at “Between the Lights” by Benson next week. Always thought that was a great Christmas tale. 🎄🎁🎭

peculiar rasping delivery over annoying background music. No thanks
