The Dust Cloud by E F Benson | Classic scary story to fall asleep to | Tales of the Supernatural

  • So here is our first offering at last.
    The Dust-Cloud is one of E F Benson’s less well-known ghost stories and was first published in January 1906 in the Pall Mall Gazette. It then featured in “The Room in the Tower, and Other Stories,” a collection of eerie supernatural tales printed in 1912.
    Many of these “classic” scary stories of yesteryear would be considered relatively tame compared to today’s examples of the spook genre, but I find them rather quaint, nevertheless.
    This one is more prose poem extolling the visceral delights of vintage motoring than frightening yarn. But that creepy way of slowly building a sense of dread for which Benson became famous is always present within the narrative.
    I hope you enjoy it and thank you for watching/listening and sleep well.

    Bravo! I love E F Benson. Heresy I know, but I may prefer him to James.
    At any rate, I always listen when I see a story of his. This was a new one to me.
    I have loved driving since age 14 (now 73). I also ride any horse I can catch, so the exposition of the root of that love as control of pace and it's being a common desire and pleasure to humanity struck me as most perceptive.
    I had the concept firmly placed in regard to riding, but I had never looked driving from that particular angle. His comparison of the two is also apt.
    Imagine a new story, a new narrator and a new point of view, all before my second cup of morning tea! 😁
    I've subscribed and look forward to more stories from you in future. Thank you.

      Thank you so much for those kind comments, @shelleymarquis2887 😊. As I read more Benson tales, I must say I have to agree with you, and now I do prefer his work to James...it does feel a little heretical to say so! 😀.
      I still hold M R in high regard, too.
      Benson's output was prolific! I aim to render all of Benson's (and James') supernatural stories here on this channel...I only wish my productivity could meet "Fred's" high standard!
      His description of the experience of riding in those early motor cars is pure poetry.
      Thank you for watching, listening, and subscribing. Your support makes me want to get recording some more Benson ASAP 😁

    Not only a ghost story but a “essay”on the early days of motoring and the attraction of speed,visuals of the Suffolk coast and heath make your posting along with its great narration a very pleasurable experience.Thanks.

      Thank you for those very kind words Merx Eddie. I always find Benson's tales charming as well as disconcerting. His prose has a poetic quality about it. After reading this one I felt like booking a summer holiday in Suffolk.

    Mr. Benson does not do the "big scare" like M R James but I like him none the less. A nice rendition of the time and place occupied by rich people in the early 20th century England.

      @scarystoriesbythefireside  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for that, very kind of you to say😊. Yes, M R James was the "master" and some of his stories had some great "jump fright" moments. But I agree. E F Benson was great at conveying that gradually developing sense of dread.

    That story is amazing for many reasons, not the least of which is the beautiful description of the wonders of automobiles and comparison to living steeds. The ghost makes a quick appearance at the end, and though we've waited all the story for it and are convinced it won't occur after all, there it is!

      That is an excellent summary of "The Dust Cloud," mjrchapin. I had very similar thoughts myself when reading it. Benson's narrative is wonderfully poetic when conveying the joys of early motoring and the Suffolk coastal setting.

    I also like the way E.F. Benson always manages, through the dialogue between his his characters, to reveal some of his beliefs and ideas. Which in turn, gives listeners not just a wonderful story..but - food for thought. About the notions of time. Physical reality. And, so on. One reason I return to Benson many times...

      Yes, indeed, that is very true. I've only discovered Benson in recent years - apart from the Mapp and Lucia TV series in the 80's. I feel I've been missing out, and considering he wrote a hundred books or thereabouts, I've some catching up to do! I'm currently working my way through his "spook" stories. I love how he incorporates his day's technology into his tales. Imagine what he would do with all the innovations we have now.

    Thank you. Interesting take on classic material crossing paths with new technology.
    Might you consider tackling something long form? I'd love to hear someone do THE PURPLE CLOUD by M.P. Shiel (1905, I think)? The current audiobook is hard to listen to due to some of the readers' lack of skill. It's a book that I think we be much more widely appreciated once more people were exposed to it. One of the first "last man on Earth" type tales. The Stanley Kramer movie, THE WORLD, THE FLESH AND THE DEVIL was very loosely based on Shiel's novel.

    • @scarystoriesbythefireside
      @scarystoriesbythefireside  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you @RSEFX . That is a great idea. I remember reading that book years ago and I enjoyed it. I'll certainly look into it. It takes me so long to record even a short story but hopefully I'll become more proficient through practice. And I would like to tackle some longer projects. I'm fitting up a soundproof recording booth at the moment, but it shouldn't take too long to complete so I will be back narrating soon.

      Thank you so much, Stephanie. Lately, I've been seeking out the less well-known works of some of these early purveyors of the supernatural. Occasionally there may be a reason why some of these tales are less popular. Although, I am left more often wondering why they aren't widely recognized. It can feel like discovering buried treasure.

    I live right on the seafront, so enjoyed the coves and the sea skies, (we get fantastic sunrises) Love the vintage cars and you included the names. Another very enjoyable scary story. Thank you… 🗣️💀😱✏️🎨🖍️ continue with the artistic skills. PS: The cobbled street looks just like the one round the corner from me… 💫🍷Cheers!

      It must be fabulous to live right by the coast🏖.🌅 I can picture those sunrises and hear the lapping water. I always wanted to live by the seaside. The nearest coastline is an hour from me.
      I hadn’t realised how many different makes of vehicle there were in the early days of motoring until I did some research. Benson seems to have had a genuine interest in technological developments.
      This was my first attempt at narrating a story. I should have made some re-takes and edited the audio more thoroughly. 🤔
      Thank you for listening and for your kind comments.😊

      For your first, this is excellent! A natural. Yes, our views over the sea are amazing the atmosphere over the sea changes throughout the day and when it rains we always get rainbows,🌈 When it is slightly foggy and ships go by, it can look beautifully spooky especially the old style ships with sails. It would be wonderful if you could find some spooky stories about the sea, as I can just imagine your animations, they would be great! 🚢🛶🚤🛳️⛴️

      Wow, that sounds beautiful and atmospheric. I can see why you love it. It sounds like a great place to get some stock footage and photos 📽📷 . I think I have a few seaside supernatural stories in a collection and I'll certainly get some of those up on the channel. Benson tales often seem to be set on the British coast but they don't always use the setting as a feature of the narrative. A Tale of an Empty House is one where the sea is a feature, I think. A few spring to mind (A Ghost of the Sea by Francis Provost is one.) I'll pick some out and slot them into the production schedule. 😁⛱🌊

      The E F Bensons Tale of An Empty House? Just read someone’s verdict of this story who wrote.. “The whole thing is pretty yawney and left me reeling with boredom because the best bit is the ending of which is all of 18 lines. However; I never take any notice of the negatives of what other people think. But what I can see of it, the story does look rather wordy for your narration and may not be suitable for the graphics. There are not many stories of spooky boat trips. But there is one real life true spooky that happened on a three masted Schooner off the coast of Greenland in 1775. 28 crew were found below deck frozen to death and the icy figure of the Captain was found still sitting at his desk pen in hand as he had been writing in his logbook and his last log entry was written in 1762. The ship had been lost at sea for 13 years. Now that would have made an excellent ghost story, if it had not been that 29 men lost their lives in such cruel circumstances and the suffering of all their loved ones agonising for years wondering what happened to them. I would love a good old spooky sea story.

      @scarystoriesbythefireside  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      “A Tale of an Empty House” is, I think, typical of several of his spook stories. It’s a side effect of Benson’s prolific literary mass production. Reading his least effective works, I often find myself left with the notion that he’d “phoned it in.” Many of them repeat motifs and devices, too. (Even M R James did that once or twice - although he admitted it as a postscript to the piece.) One thing about narrating these stories is that you spend much time immersed in and listening to them. I often come away with a more profound respect for a tale that, as a casual reader, I initially thought rather lame. At other times, I’m utterly fed up with the story and can’t wait to move on to the next one! 😂
      Creating graphics for the timeline of Benson's stories can be challenging. So many of them are rambling and full of abstract and philosophical stuff, i.e., one character's theories about the supernatural.🎨
      The story about "The Octavius" is fascinating and contains many spooky and disturbing elements. Very sad, too, of course. It is reminiscent of “The Terror” and the first few chapters of “Frankenstein.”
      I’ve scheduled a couple of "seaside" tales for early in the new year; “The Haunted Beach” by Mary Robinson and “Seashore Macabre: A Moment’s Experience” by Hugh Walpole. There will be more, though, because I find that I love a spooky sea story too.🤗
