I did astra power steer in a Falcon and it felt like ass. Shudderd under full lock and had a pressure drop with big flicks. Did one event and back to mechanical.
My EL falcon has had a cooling line tapped into the water jacket near the No 6 spark plug which helps to get coolant flowing to the rear of the head better. Apparently and old Taxi Drivers hack. My Temp gauge rarely gets over the L at the very bottom of the gauge. It runs cool as FK even in summer.
So the excess powersteering fluid doesn't run onto the alternator I had the powersteering bottom line leak onto the alternator and it caused some good cookage
Slap a PWR 52mm radiator in… they’re not necessarily cheap (around $1k, cheaper if you can get one on sale or with a discount voucher) but you’ll never ever have a problem with cooling ever again. Don’t put your full trust into the plastic tank eBay specials. Only issue with AU Falcons is the jealousy and hate that comes from others who don’t own an AU Falcon.
There's nothing wrong with the cooling systems. They just clog up with Sediment (algae, rust particles etc). It settles in the fins and solidifies over time, effectively reducing the functional surface area of the radiator. Just get the cheapest new standard eBay replacement and you'll be sweet as for a good 5-10 years 👌
And the spill tray around the PS fill cap is to stop any oil getting on the Alternator when filling. More of a shit PS Pump to alternator location/proximity issue. They really should have switched their position from the factory and done a remote res for the pump.
One more 🤣. The timing chain tensioner is behind/Under the power steering pump bracket on the side of the timing cover. Very common for the O-Ring on the screw-in-plug that seals access to the tensioner to leak (pressurised oil behind it doesn't help). Unscrew the plug (need a Ford tool or needle nose pliers in the holes) to unscrew and replace the O-ring. Often mistaken for sump gasket leaks as you cant see it normally or the path the oil takes until it hits the sump.
I’ve also had power steering leak coming from hard line going into the steering rack window switch not working due to dirt build up in switch some sort of heater line leak witch I still need to fix I’m pretty sure it’s that T head connector and worst of all the diff did not come welded from factory like what a terrible choice they all should come factory welded
If you run the heater it will cool the motor down as well, it's not fun but it will work, my turbo stays pretty cool but I've got a intercooler, and my air filter is out of the engine bay that makes a massive difference, my air filter sits in the bumper really close to the ground, I'd upgrade the radiator and bonnet scoop and move the air filter out of the engine bay, also make a switch for the fans so they run all the time, my turbo you can pic in the computer when the fans come on like what temperature, not sure it you can do that on the au..
Timing chain tensioner is is prone to leak. Got to remove power steering pump and 2 brackets to get to it. There's plenty of info on them and the o ring that you have to change... dont just throw some sealant on it, unless you want to pull it all apart again and be careful about the 3 bolts in the power steering pump - getting them mixed up can make the pump case crack, which will cause it to leak onto the alternator and blow it.
How did you learn to do all this work on cars? I'm so sick of my xr6 breaking and wanna be able to do all the repairs myself 😕 no car ppl in my family 😅
look everything up, just scour the web regarding different automotive issues. Basic tool use is not difficult either. learn that online as well. You just need to learn to stay safe using jacks and stands too. that's probably the main thing safety-wise lol
Good to see the old girl is getting a power steering cooler, now you have knuckles and more lock you shouldn't be hitting full lock at high revs at much that usually what kills them but fluid getting hot is a big killer aswell so power steer cooler is a big help and that one is more then enough as its bigger then what I run. I recommend running correct fluid aswell as I feel that is also another killer of factory ford pumps and racks. The 2 years of thrashing mine at track I have never had a power steering issue running the old second hand pump and rack that came with car just with a cooler and the fluid that was recommended when I used to work at ford as a mechanic and that is valvoline farm plus tractor hydraulic oil but any fluid that says ford falcon specific should be fine if you can't find farm plus. I don't recommend using dex 3 or anything else. Also only fill to cold add line after bleeding up. once fluid gets hot when drifting will overflow if you fill to full cold line/ hot full line, etc. Hope this helps, love watching the channel and seeing this car grow man. Keen to see/ here your feed back about more positive castor aswell 🤙
The thing on top of the powersteering is to divert overfilled fluid from killing the alternator underneath it. Mighty Au falcons have no problems, what are you talking about?
The weird caps on the factory hose clamps were torque to spec, so in the factory they snap off. Its not too bad, they just pop off.
Easy fix for the power steering is just an astra electric power steering pump conversion, just needs good cooling and a rebuilt rack would fix that

Put a bigger pulley on the pump to slow it down. they are not made to do higher revs, it just cooks the fluid

This is great for my Futura, those random coolant leaks are a pain.
If you haven’t already I would wanna hard wire the thermo fans so they are always on
You did an amazing video and well done all of this year 10/10😄😄

The jealousy and hate from people who’ve never driven a Falcon at all 😩🤣🚨
It's like eating a bag of chips in church. Everyone looks at you with disgust, but deep down they want one too
High quality fluid, good ps cooler are a must. If your still running servo Ps fluid youll have issues.

Love the shirt Rex!
in the fg they put a power steering cooler infront of the radiator so they did fix it slightly
the au is looking gnarly as 🤘🤘🤙🤙

Power Steering directional overflow thing-a-magig stops your alternator from going for a swim in power steering fluid.
Also does the AU have the extra power steering cooler?

Learning more about the falcons
good man :)
@@TURBOTRISTO interesting cars but can be quick as hell

Check oil pressure sensor under the intake manifold they commonly leak 🤙
Heyy I need help can u make a video of body kits? I got a Honda Inspire o6 and I just wanna base it out
My au falcon hasn't ever had overheating issues? Always sits at around 1/4 on the temp gauge, Mines been well maintained though
Rex I'm big fan of your channel and I wanna know what you'll need to change your car from auto to manual I wanna manual swap my car.
Yep definitely and with a full detailed video from start to finish
Gosh they need some tlc but just think all
This stuff needs to be done before the turbo goes on
power steering pump is from holding it at full lock while drifting
can the ute version drift ok?
Au falcon radiator is one of the best

That's right I once spilled some on the alternator and started to catch fire and cooked it.
Then the power steering oil boils over then leaks all over the alternator
And always check your front balljoints, they're prone to going on AUs-BAs.
i havnt had these problems on mine, probs cause i brought mine of a grandma so it wasnt flogged at first
Yeah nah I have to fill my coolant up every 3 days ish, can’t find any leaks hahaha the mistery of au falcons hahaha
Take ya thermostat out mate
I’ll send you a shifter for free, chuck it in the au 👌🏽
If only we had em in the states…
front camber on driftas always looks so sexy
AUUU!
Yeeeee haw 😎
AYE HUE
Auuu m8
is that a... AU FALCONNNNNN
i actually just bought an au
auuuuu
Barra swap
Not worth it. SOHC is fine.
Auu falcên😂
My ex bought an au and wants me to drive it 😂🥴🇲🇽🇲🇽
Well sh#t. Lots of cooling to sort you can
Buy a Commodore
Meow
First 😇🥇
Still got your 10 mm I see
I've never heard of an Aussie car without power steering issues to be honest. 6 cylinder commies are bad for power steering issues too
All I can say guys is smartlock/smartsheild 🤬🤬sucks the worse system you could think of
