I was valedictorian but I don’t help my second grade granddaughter because second grade math consists of some thing with lines and dots in squares and I have no idea what they’re doing they don’t just carry the one like normal people.
Quick draw math. I'm currently virtual mom *teaching* it, 2nd grade. I like it. It makes sense to me, now. They do carry the one. It's referred to as a tens place (one of the long lines is a tens). I was SCARED when I 1st saw 2nd grade math hieroglyphics 😳 then I just went with the flow. 😆 Faked it till it clicked 👍
They’re teaching for conceptual understanding instead of just having them memorize steps. It’s the best way to help them be able to connect it to what they learn in the next grade.
All I can say is none of them seem to be able to add, subtract, multiply, or divide. but, if they’ve got the concept, good on ya. Oh, and since cursive is out they can’t read anything not in print, but who needs that other stuff anyways. Besides, they can just write words or sentences any way they like, because what was that? Spelling? Grammar? Vocabulary? What was that again? You mean you had to memorize stuff? Didn’t you have spellcheck and grammar check and a dictionary on your computer? Sometimes you didn’t have your iphone and you had to do math on paper? What was that, the dark ages?

I'm the director of an afterschool program. We provide 30 minutes of homework time a day and while we aren't required to help kiddos with their homework, we do our best. It's only the second week of school (we started August 8) and yesterday it took 3 adults to figure out 3rd grade math homework.
This is probably because of unfamiliar methods of solving requested. I'm not versed, but my math nerd brother says the new math methods his son is learning are great, way better than the methods he learned. beats me though.
I'm homeschooled in 5th! I'm starting in September! Wish me luck, everyone!

Homeschooling rocks because then you keep learning WITH your kids! I am finally getting the "why" of elementary grammar rules down, and history and science are so fun when you've had some real life experiences (because I'm older) to tie concepts to. Math....let's just say I cracked an Algebra 1 book yesterday and began with adding and subtracting mixed numbers. 😉 My 11 year old corrected my lesson and I got 4 out of 30 wrong. Not too bad
Math story problems are the worst!!! If the flight to London takes blah blah blah...you probably didn't get past TSA anyway, so you're still sitting in the terminal!! Now that's math based on REAL life 😁

I homeschool my kids. This year they are in 2nd, 4th, and 7th grades. I'm good with 2nd, that's cake. 4th is tough because the teaching methods are different than when I was younger, so I'm learning along with the 4th grader how to do things differently. The 7th grader though, he's basically self-schooled because all I'm good for anymore is checking to make sure he stays on task. The big kid asks me random school questions out of the blue sometimes and I either know or we look it up and learn together.
This was a fun video guys! Thank you so much... I paused at all the word problems so that I could do them before you gave the answer. It was quite fun and I got them all right. To be fair though, and please do not take this as conceit, but I am really good at math. Math was always my favorite subject in school and I have always loved numbers in general. As an adult, I've taken it a step further. I now do taxes for a lot of my friends and family. Math is like 1% of taxes though. Taxes arer way complicated, but I've taken the time to learn and all that... Not that anyone cares, I'm just ranting while waiting for my laundry. Lol! 🙂😅😂

I've been through 4th grade five times now, with six kids. My youngest is in second grade. I’ve been through 7th grade four times, with six kids too. My oldest didn’t live through the 5th grade, due to complications from Cystic Fibrosis. I have always loved math and numbers, still do! I enjoy watching your family’s videos. I’ve run across some things, with my kids, that they call it a different name and I had no clue, what they were wanting my kid to do! God bless your family.
Honestly where I live we can get local high school students (who are planning on going into teaching) for tutoring and homework help, and they are a free resource. Check with local high schools and/or colleges to see if it is available in NC

The daughter of my best friend in the states was in are you smarter than a 5th grader.
And I really love this episode. My dad studied maths, and I suck at it. And my teacher in the 80s couldn’t (or wouldn’t) explain the context. And my dad took that effort, to explain and find examples and did great! He always said he couldn’t teach. But he is great at explaining complex stuff. And he could ask those questions that would really help you to grasp the matter.
😂 I homeschool my kids, and my 16 year old should be starting college if the stay at home order ever gets lifted.
But, thanks to your video, I finally understand why all the parents are freaking out. 😁👍

15 yrs ago i was dating a girl who had a daughter in school and she was having problems with some math and it was that new math they came out with that took two days to get the answer that would take us 2 seconds to get normally. well i have never done it and i called around to friends that had kids to see if anyone could help me figure it out and i got no help. i called the school the next day to see if they could teach us parents on how to do it, and no was the answer we got. so how we as parents help our kids understand how to do this homework if we are selves cant understand it?
The "new" math (aka common core") actually makes a lot of sense when you sit and think about it instead of automatically relying on what you use to. When I first saw it I was like what the heck none of this make sense and its way more complicated and unnecessary than how I learned it when I was young. Then I realized it was just different methods visualization of actual numbers to help you do mental math, and a lot of the common core math process is actually how I do the math mentally... I just could never explain it before.
If you were to ask me to multiply whole numbers between 0 to 12 I can easily give you the answer in a heart beat because I was forced to memorize the multiplication table for it. But if you were to ask me give you the answer to 131 x 241 in 5 seconds I wouldn't be able to do it. It would take me a very long time to do it mentally. I could easily do it if you gave me a pencil because what it would look like if I had a piece of paper is this.

And as you can see that is pretty hard to visualize mentally. The problem with the way I learned how to do math was that I wasn't actually taught how to do math or rather understand the concept of it, I was just taught memorize certain numbers and equations / tricks and barf them out on demand without any real understanding of them. In common core they teach you like 5 different ways to visualize it... some of them are better than others depending on the person. So that is why they teach you all the methods, so that you can chose which one is easiest for you down the road.
I use to always get the right answer in math class by doing mental math pretty quickly in my head faster than other kids could get the answer, but I had no idea how express it on paper because it wasn't the "short cut" method that school wanted and they considered it the wrong way of doing math at the time... but in reality I was actually just doing one of the common core methods that are now being taught. A lot of the common core methods actually really help you to understand mathematical word problems because it helps you understand how to visualize the information that you are being told.
My mom is like a human calculator, I can toss out any giant numbers, ask here to divide it or even square root it and she can cough out the answer in 20 seconds. But ask her a word problem and you can see her have a nervous break down. And that is because she only knows how to input numbers into formulas and barf out data. All she knows how to do is use shortcuts. But once something becomes more complicated then just inputting numbers and requires visualization and identifying different values based on context... then the shortcuts don't work anymore.

I have a 7th grader and a senior in high school. Eldest stopped asking us for help by 4th grade. 😂 Youngest still asks, bless him, but he knows 80% of the time we are probably wrong. So he checks his work with friends. 😅 I tell him all the time to do his homework with his friends. They are all honor roll kids. 😁

I am in school still and what my teacher tells us to do is call someone in our class and ask for help, but they can't tell you how to do it. We are only allowed to give a push in the right direction when someone asks for help. Sometimes it's showing a good way to do it, maybe answering a yes or no question.
I was a 7th grader in the Wake County Public School System last year and I had know idea what was happening in the 7th grade questions. 😬
Those 7th grade science questions are stuff I didn’t learn until high school anatomy and physiology if at all!! It’s tough to learn at any age honestly.
When I was married (from 2003-2007) and had step-kids I always enjoyed helping them with their homework. And I was pretty good at it too, considering some of the interesting facts stories I told my step-son (who was the oldest and was 8 when I married his mother) occasionally got him extra credit from his teacher, which was good because he was not an enthusiastic student at times. :-D
My favorite story was when I was helping his learn about the Revolutionary War when he was in the sixth grade. As we're discussing it he gets this sly grin on his face, and I know he's aching to be funny, so I ask him "What?" With a grin the little smart-aleck asks "Did you fight in the Revolutionary War, or were you too old?" I replied, "I'm thirty-eight, jackwagon. Not two hundred and fifty-something." He was cute. Sometimes. :-D
Um you're giving me anxiety because I too have a (struggling) 7th and 4th grader. I can't help anymore either!
FYI to Penn, direwolves were once real animals, but are extinct. If you can ever make it out to CA for the La Brea Tar Pits, there are fossils there of direwolves that they found in the tar pits. Very very cool!
You also have to remember that we as kids learn it in class the day before we take the test, so you don’t have to worry about it.
I just want the record to show that I sat down and did the dan and Benny word problem and figured it out! I would hope I can do it because I took calculus but wanted to see if my brain would remember how to think about the problem! Yay!!!

Math problem: you want to build a fence around a garden that is 25ft x 15ft. How much fencing do you need?
Me: you buy three rolls and see how far you get, or return what's left.
265 mph is really slow for a transatlantic flight.
My solution to math problems is to simplify the question where possible. For example, instead of "Bill leaves the city at 43 mph and Tom leaves going the other direction at 79 mph", I rewrite that in my head to "Bill stays in the city and Tom leaves at 43+79 = 122mph". Then I look for tricks in the question itself. For example, I once gave my Intro to Physics students the following question: I fire a bowling ball straight up; when the ball hits the ground, which of the following answers is CLOSEST to the amount of force it exerts on the earth? The possible answers are: (A) 17 kg (B) 9 (C) 12 m/s (D) 1 million newtons (E) 3 hockey pucks. The ball has a mass of 13.278 kg, a shear strength of 217.99 MPa, an initial velocity of 1.44 cm/s, and is launched with acceleration of 111.734m/s/s over 0.249s.
The trick: Force is measured in newtons, so the answer is D without having to keep reading.
I love how Penn says "never take the bait & say the highest number or the lowest".....as if studying is not part of it just good guessing...hahaha!!

I have a 5th grader. Thank GOODNESS he just had math as homework last year (and previous ) although doesn't matter sense common core 🤦
My boys are in 7th and 9th grades. The majority of my efforts when helping them with homework is simply keeping them focused and on task. I do read directions and attempt to explain things in an alternate manner at times. This works great for my older son, but my younger son takes things more literal and doesn’t want my spin on things.
10:37. "18:27 is to 16:x" is the same as "18/17 = 16/x." To solve for x you do 16×17/18.

Those math word problems were my favorite... I ended up going in after school to help my daughter's friends with their homework. I would draw little diagrams to show my work, and it helped them get the concept.
My tip is to check out Khan Academy on-line. One of my colleagues suggested it to me when my child was struggling with math last year and it really helped. We will be using it again this year for sure. They offer instruction on many subjects at many levels and it is free. They are donor supported.

My entire life since the age of 19 I have worked with developmentally disabled and special needs. Obviously I found my calling.... I have an autistic son and he never had this kind of Education, and my older son I let him sign out in 11th grade and take his GED so I never really helped him with any of his homework. That's probably why we get along so well today. I would never ever be able to help any of my children today.

soooo it took Dan two hours with an average speed of 79 mph to catch up. so 79x2 is 158 miles (because average speed per hour - > traveled 79 miles in one hour, it took him two hours.)
So Benny traveled the distance of 158 mi in 3 hours. 158:3 = 52.67 mi per hour

Do their kids go to private school? I remember taking honors classes in 7th grade, and I didn't have science questions that complicated. Honestly, those sound more like high school level questions. The 4th grade math problem is easy for adult me, but I remember doing fractions and still doing division and multiplication tables back then.

Also, just to clarify, I’m not sure of the source of the test questions, but for the record, wolves are not being hunted to extinction. They were extirpated from most of the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries, but now gray wolf populations in the Rocky Mountains region are growing and expanding farther south and west. Many areas do not have an appropriate management plan, and therefore have such high wolf populations that they are detrimental to the ecosystem and unsupportable. While there are probably other specific locations in the world where wolves are currently being hunted to extinction, that is in no way the overall trend.

I told my kids I can do all homework 📚 help except MATH! Hated it in school myself and still do today... I blame a mean teacher in 8th grade that embarrassed me in front of the entire class... I never applied myself again... true story! I’m actually better at it now than I was as a kid...

I think the biggest mistake when doing these types of challenges. Is forgetting that the child has been through several weeks of instruction and reinforcing activities to retain this information. I think it is a credit to the teachers of old that's the retention is still working in your adult life no matter what grade you may have come across this information. The retention is amazing. I say that this counts far more as a memory game than an actual I am smart game. I would like to see how long your children can remember their earliest lessons and retain them. I think that would be a funnier challenge. Let's see if your kids can retain information as well as you.

The question about Dan has me questioning your correct answer..... if Dan left 3 hrs before Benny and it took him 2hrs to catch up that would be a total of 5hrz driving for Dan because the problem never said he stopped driving. So you took the 158mi total traveled by Benny to catch up and divided it by 3 but in actuality it should have been divided by 5 and would have been 31.6mph. RIGHT?!

Danielle Galer the equation is 5X = (79 + X) *2 solve for X where X is 52.67 MPH. If Benny is 79 mph faster than Dan, that implies he travels 79 more miles per hour than Dan, so Benny’s speed is 79 + X.
I stopped helping with homework after about the 3rd grade with our sons when they were younger,except for English, which I was good at, but now not so sure at my age! LOL! Our sons are now adults and know way more than my husband and I do.

I believe the flight to London is 14 hours and 37 minutes. You did not actually say how many minutes, you just said a few... It's actually quite simple. The flight back was 298 miles per hour for 13 hours. You multiply those two numbers and that tells you how many miles it flew. You then divide the mileage by the miles per hour and that tells you how many hours. I went a step further and I converted the decimal so that I could get the exact number of minutes.

Here are the 3 word problem solutions. FIRST REMEMBER: SPEED * TIME = DISTANCE example 70mph * 2hours = 140 miles. (GOT IT?) 1) Sam = 80mph and Benny = 42mph since going OPPOSITE add speeds = 122mph (ask Einstein why.) SO 122mph*Time = 130miles and so Time = 130/122 = 1 4/60 hours ~ 1 hour 4mins (CORRECT!) 2) Dan Distance = X mph * 5 hours = (X + 79) mph * 2 hours = Benny Distance SO 5X = 2X + 158 SO 3X = 158 SO X = 52 2/3 mph = 52.7mph (CORRECT!) just 0.1mph less 3) The SLOWER flight had to fly for a LONGER time SO (298 mph/265 mph) *13 hours = 14.6 hours ~ 14 hours 37 mins (VERY CLOSE!) The kids actually have an advantage because they just learned this information where as you guys are trying to remember things you learned 20 years ago that you most likely haven't used/been asked much since then.

i got As and Bs in school until high school the first time i got a C i cried. i felt so stupid. but being smart is all about just memorizing what u learn and if u can then u can get through school. but for me i was scared i was gonna fail 12th grade cause i went to public school and there were so many days i had to skip a school day because i had seizures every 5 days and i kept losing my memory.

I'm in 4th grade. I got 17 / 36 on my math test but I got 35 / 38 of my reading test.
14:00 Actually, the math problem Penn did the wrong work (but got the right answer) for was a 4th grade question. The 7th grade question he got wrong was a history question at 10:15.
