As a spanish 29 year old moviegoer who only knows about USA old culture by movies and television, discovering the TV show of Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert was something fascinating. And even more watching them of a late night show like this, just saying jokes and have fun!
You get two thumbs up for compiling these Siskel and Ebert videos.

Appears that Siskel and Ebert were Dave's favourite guests by the looks of it. They certainly have great chemistry together.
These guys are the most 80s thing to come out of the 80s and I absolutely can't get enough of them.
They started their careers in the 60s and started broadcasting in the 70s. Sadly, most of their 70s broadcasts were erased so we'll never see their original review of STAR WARS which was reportedly negative. Then a few months later they both changed their reviews to positive. Perhaps someday a VHS or Betamax taping of the show may appear.
It still hurts that these two are gone. These segments were so wholesome and hilarious. And I loved reading Ebert's reviews every week. It'll never be the same to not have them.
I love how Siskel around 47:00 is so vibrant and then when he realizes the interviewer isn't listening very carefully, he becomes colder. Luckily Letterman can keep up with him. These are a joy I've watched all of them so far; this week's been really rough for me and these are making me feel better.

It's actually not uncommon for professional film critics to memorize the exact runtime of a film since they frequently quote it in their reviews and usually mention it as part of their discussions.

Master Elm Street Roger did laugh at some of the fat jokes in these videos though, so he clearly had a sense of humour about it.
It’s agreed upon before the show what jokes will be said, so clearly Roger was okay with the fat jokes and Gene was fine was the bald jokes.

Funny thing was that Siskel was Eberts best man. There’s photos of them at their wedding.
I love these compilations and I love Siskel and Ebert. Thank you! One thing that was annoying were the continuing fat jokes about Ebert. Siskel and Letterman were booed multiple times for making those jokes and yet continued to make them. They were witty enough to think of other jokes; they were just going for cheap shots.
As good as their syndicated show was, these Letterman appearances really let Siskel and Ebert shine. Just the right mix of analysis and yucks.

Funny how no one expected Silence of the Lambs to win Best Picture that year, and Roger felt it was the 'dark horse'. They were saying BP would likely go to JFK, Beauty and the Beast or Bugsy. Silence of the Lambs would end up sweeping the Academys that year. Ebert and many others were probably very surprised.

Ebert didn't waste a second on self-pity at the weight jokes. He could take it and he could dish it out. Both of those men could. I didn't always agree with their opinions, but often they defended their views well. Only once that I know of did Gene ever cross a line (two lines, in fact) in a single review, that of 'Friday The 13th.' He spoiled the killer's identity and put Betsy Palmer's home address in his review so that fans to write to her their disdain with her film choice. Not cool, man. Not cool.
I love Gene but he was a dick. He changed a bit after he was diagnosed...but it was kind of too late (although it's never too late to be a better person)... Don't forget he was in HELL in south park lol They BOTH did things that affected people - MANY people. Fans loved them but they weren't well liked in the film industry at ALL. They downplayed it alot but they had HUGE pull in crushing a movie. Gene used his brain and roger his mouth...look what happened... Karma? Who knows.

After The Late Shift movie came out, Dave showed clips from the movie for a few nights and gave his reactions. For example, one night he showed the scene where the actor playing him (John Michael Higgins?), and he had something funny to say about that scene. If you have those clips, do you think you could upload them, or maybe put them into a compilation? Kind of like a "Dave Reacts to The Late Shift"

You know how he gets focused on things. During this whole time, much was made of the fact that Streisand was overlooked for a Best Director nomination. For Yentl, for Prince of Tides, for Nuts - or anything else. Add to this his disdain for pretentious celebrities. When he sees S&E, especially during awards season, I think that's the first thing that pops into his head.
My guess is he always wanted her on his show & she always turned him down.
They really used to make fun of Roger, and he was never that fat, really, hehe.

Great compilation. I always liked Siskel and Ebert, with their intelligent, thoughtful, informative and entertaining film reviews. I watched them for many years. But in the last segment of this compilation, I lost a lot of respect for Siskel. Roger Ebert said he lost 18 pounds, and good for him! The audience cheered him, as did I, so Siskel’s fat joke a few seconds earlier didn’t quite work. The audience loved Ebert’s ‘bald’ comeback. Then Siskel name-drops about a party at Halston’s apartment with Liza Minnelli, and he SPECIFICALLY says Ebert hadn’t been invited. Ebert gets a great audience reaction when he sarcastically mentions Siskel’s ‘unspoken modesty’ after Siskel’s party story. But worst of all was at the very end of this compilation, when Siskel compares Ebert to the whale in ‘Free Willy.’ That was unnecessarily cruel, and Letterman’s audience let him know it. Good for them. Watching their movie review shows over so many years, Siskel always came across to me as kind of smug, pompous, and a little too impressed with himself (you’re just a film critic!), whereas Ebert to me was more of an Everyman who didn’t take himself as seriously as Siskel did, and cared about movies a LOT MORE than Siskel did. Look at how many books Ebert wrote about movies! Ebert also always came across to me as much more likable than Siskel. I always enjoyed them ribbing each other, but the fat jokes, ESPECIALLY that Free Willy one, were sometimes nasty. One of the worst (and meanest) things you can poke fun at someone for is their appearance. That has nothing to do with any issue you’re discussing, that’s just mean, childish name-calling. I’d much rather go to the movies with Ebert than with Siskel. Anybody out there agree?

I dunno haha I think it's sort of become a bit between the two and letterman as I feel you can see from their respective reactions. They both have fun sniping each other and I personally feel it's hard to say who's the brightest since they both argue with reasonable viewpoints and are very quick-witted, sparring with the best talk show host of all time. Love the bit with Siskel and Springsteen, must have been a dream come true for him haha
Maybe that’s why they had such broad appeal- that contrast is what makes them fun to listen to.
