Later in 1994 (maybe '95) Roger wrote an article explaining what happened with that Jack Lemmon story on the air. I can't find it on his website anymore, but the story goes like this: prior to the taping, Letterman's colleagues had prep phone calls with Gene and Roger individually. They told each guy "We want you to tell the Lemmon story. Don't let your partner interfere!" When the show was over, Gene was furious with Roger for going over the top and nearly ruining the segment he thought they both knew was supposed to be his. But they talked it over and realized Letterman's people had fooled them both, and set them up for an inadvertent bit of comedy.

I always like how he calls them "America's sweethearts" or "America's favorite couple." I was such a fan of them beginning in 1989, when I was 13. I would get Ebert's books for my birthdays and/or Xmas, and of course I watched them on TV. I think it was their Nov 1994 Letterman interview, where I was watching it in the college dorm, and a bunch of girls came in and wondered why Siskel and Ebert were always together- "Do they live together?"
