WAIT i just realized how ironic it is that the majority of the dad’s dialogue was complaining about how cold the house was, but in the end he got what he wanted and died by being set on fire
What, exactly is wrong with you, and why are there over 100 more fools like you? I saw the movie before I read the spoiler you've got there. Other people won't be so lucky.
I mean, I don't think I'm alone in saying that if I'm watching a MovieBitches review, one of three things is happening: 1) I don't want to see this movie, 2) I've already seen this movie and want to laugh along with it, or 3) I want to see this movie but don't care about spoilers. I'm just not pressing play if I'm concerned about spoilers lol
Can also imagine you two house hunting: "This house is cheap, but haunted" "But the kitchen is fabulous! Look at this finish and craftmanship, yas! We'll take it!"
fucking love this movie lmao. i don't understand mainstream horror fans tbh, it's like they're completely emotionally deadened and need a steady stream of jump scares to feel alive
I'm an A24 fan, so I was really looking forward to this movie. I really liked it too, Toni Collette was of course fabulous, and I hope the Academy remembers how fabulous she was in this movie when awards season starts. I also didn't mind how weird it got and I liked that it was more of a slow burn family drama for a while than I was in more of the horror stuff? Anyways, the big take away from this movie is never go to a second location with Ann Dowd.
Would the first half of this movie have been scarier if it had been narrated by Katya???? "Mother! I've become a mother agaaainnn..." "Mother I'm presenting artefacts for violence again..." "Mother, I've confused myself with my own message again." Here for it
Alternately, it could have been more hilarious if it was narrated by Penny Marshall. "Being a mom is HARD! Covering your son in paint thinner Sawing off your own head to summon a demon Your running on NO SLEEP!"
Andrew saying he’s never listening to us again is so reminiscent of AS3 Shangela breaking the 4th wall and blaming us for Trixie’s Snatch Game haha 😂 You guys are good to your fans - thanks for the review! 💕
I don't agree that nothing happened in the first hour. IMO the movie was perfectly paced esp. as an homage to Rosemary's Baby + Ordinary People (per the director). But 😍 at the epiphany on why the house was so cold.
I laughed so hard throughout this Review 😂 Some of my favorite parts: the Andrew chart (2:10) Avaryl's jumpscare (5:38) the Addams family edit (16:00) WALNUTS! (28:07) the EDM/tongue pop remix (36:30) Tinkerbell (41:36) Hail Paimon (51:16)
I personally loved this movie, but it definitely should've been marketed as a bit more of a family drama/horror than "The New Exorcist" (the movie is way more similar to Rosemary's Baby imo). I can see your complaints with the film, as it is rather confusing and you really have to give a shit about the family in order to really enjoy it. Also, Toni Collete was fabulous, duh.
I swear you guys are the only people on earth who can spoil a movie I haven't seen and STILL make me want to watch it. cough cough sleepaway camp cough cough.
Y'all discussing the house made me think this should be "Nancy Myers' Hereditary," where there's cult members, but also great scenes of walnut crudites being served in fabulous kitchens.
avaryl, if the kind of scene where there's someone hiding in the background scares you, there's this australian movie called lake mungo that will freak you the hell out. i'm scared of the same kind of thing too and i couldn't sleep for like a week after seeing that. it starts out kinda cheesey but it gets good as you start to realize what's really going on. loved this review!!! #letsmakeepipenhappen
I wish y'all enjoyed this more, I loved the story building. This has be watched alone, or with like minded people to appreciate. I'm sure y'all dont care, but every scene and conversation had a purpose. I think you guys expected typical shit, even the soundtrack especially during the final shot is designed because "King Paimon" is known to be associated with certain sounds. The foreshadowing in this film is so detailed. I seen it multiple times like the psycho that I'm, and it's officially in my top ten horror films. The genius to me is its disguised as a drama, the family elements gave it a authenticity. I loved that, it made it even scarier when shit popped off. The rituals, "King Paimon", all those things are believed, and practiced by those who study these religions. Very well researched film, which makes it even more terrifying. I still enjoyed y'all take, personally it lingered with me after the credits.
I loved the movie, there are a lot of stuff that they hint to from the beginning. ( sign on the pole that Charlie hits, grandma saying to Charlie she wanted her to be a boy, a drawing at the funural) The cult planned charlies death since she was born. Also the ''spell'' Annie was doing to contact Charlie had a word for ''king'' in it, meaning thats how she summoned Paiman.
I agree completely. I think the film should've been marketed as something more akin to that film than The Exorcist. Both films also have the whole creepy cult controlling everything from afar thing going on. I would also compare this film, stylistically, to The Shining.
Not horror? the shit that whole family went through, was pretty horrific if you ask me. Now if you think the movie wasn't scary, that's find...but this for the most part was a horror flick.
I took my grandma to see this movie and both of us gasped when the car "accident" happened. Loved this movie, wasn't what I expected but I enjoy horror/suspense movies that aren't just jumpscares.
So, I haven't watched the review yet, but I'm having some really horrible personal shit going on right now, like literally in the past hour, and you guys uploaded this review, which I've been dying to see, and it's an hour long, which makes me even more grateful, because this movie has so much content to discuss. That is a ridiculous run-on sentence. Anyway, thank you for putting yourselves out there. It helps me feel like I've got a couple extra friends at my back.
Hey, I've been going through some stuff lately as well. I don't know you, but I hope you can feel better soon, and I wish you good luck through your hard times. xx
"The son also seemed adopted" LOL I've just realized that guy has actually played Gabriel Byrne's son once before, in the In Treatment series! (He was the arty-shy little Max) LOVE In Treatment
Yes. Pecans too. I’m allergic to tree nuts. Peanuts are not tree nuts. They are legumes (beans). Someone mentioned that Charlie was eating peanut M&Ms which is possible.
I really enjoyed this film on the second viewing. I wasn't sure how I felt about it the first time, as it was so unusual... But then I couldn't stop thinking about it, so went again. I really dug what it was doing the second time! And, yes, Toni Collette is INCREDIBLE!
This comment is in regard to the scene where the daughter has the nut reaction. I have noticed that everyone is saying that the girl should have seen the nuts in the cake, but I think what happened was that the cake was cut with same knife they used to chop the nuts. There was no nuts in or on the cake, but there was residue on the knife.
y'all are out of your minds insane if you think this movie was anything less than a masterpiece. I understand maybe not enjoying these types of films but as an avid fan of horror movies this film shook me to my core in all the right ways. It was absolutely phenomenal
ares I’m also a major horror fanatic and was shocked to think they and a lot of the commenters thought this was boring or bad. I think it’s because they aren’t horror fans and expect an enjoyable horror to be something typical horror like a blumhouse film and loud jump scares but that’s not what A24 does. They keep talking about not feeling scared but I didn’t feel scared either but that didn’t make me think it was bad. I thought it was good because it was creepy, disturbing, and interesting. I actually never feel scared when I watch horror movies but I still love horror. If you watch reviews by other horror fans, you’ll see they all thought this movie was amazing. I think reviews by non horror fans will all say they thought it was boring and disappointing. Also I’m confused why they said nothing happened for an hour when the first major incident happened like 15 min in then nonstop incidences until the end...
Same here and I agree with the above reply as well. I loved everything about this movie although I can see why others wouldn't. I thought the pace was perfectly fine and the sense of dread you feel for the characters was incredible. It forces you to go to the darkest corners of your mind which is far more enjoyable than any jumpscare.
I can't think of another scene in any movie that I've seen lately that compares with what happens in the car after the party. The director didn't cut away for way too long and it was excruciating to watch.
I need to rewatch it, but I felt like the constant background heartbeat-like sound really added dimension/atmosphere to the movie. At some point, I remember the sound abruptly stopping and it absolutely creeped me out! I think it was during a more intense scene and it made it feel as if the silence was deafening.
Omg when this review popped up on my feed, my first thought was: Andrew is reviewing a horror movie, this is going to be good! And boy was it ever! I genuinely want to see this movie now, but watch it as a comedy! I've never laughed so much at a horror movie review! I mean, I was dead, then came back to life to finish the review when you used Laganja's "this is too f**king much"! My mom saw this movie and only told me that it was "weird". Now I need to see it for myself!
I'm a horror fan and thought this movie tries to be "the vvitch" atmosferic, artistic horror and also have its cake and be a family drama too. And It was neither, although I really liked the family drama parts. The slow burn never payed off bc the end was so contained and focused on like, being really artistic! wow visuals! and wasnt scary, didnt seem like a climax, closed the movie off in another tone and left everybody in the movie theater feeling like there would be another scene right after but then it just ended. But go off I guess
This & A Quiet Place were on point for us. They were both my kind of movies. We watched a wonderful Cra Cra Gothic Horror Romance last night on the couch together & it was just a great..... the Lodgers. But it was super crazy with a super weird story.
This review was nuts😂😂😂 (not pun intended) I'm a little mad some movies are classified as horror when they are more psychological thriller, the viewer comes with a different expectation. And in my opinion this movie was more of a psychological experience that horror itself. I really enjoyed the movie and you guys review.
"...and they were walnuts, which are expeeeeeensive!" LMAO......although i loved this movie for many reasons, I love your review to the point that i'm obsessed LOL
Also, when Annie pulls all of the embroidered floor mats out of storage, you will notice the symbol from the necklace is not woven into Annie’s mat, but on a mat labelled Charles. This must be the brother who committed suicide. Also, the picture in the album of Annie’s mother in a white dress being showered in gold coins. Riches to the conjourer?
This movie was wierd as fuck and I liked that about it . it made me uneasy and I was here for it . I wouldn't say scared but it had some very refreshing tone building that modern horror is lacking more of this and less of (LOUD NOISE AND SCREAM!)
I'm at the part where you are talking about the weird dialogue and I would just loooooveee to watch you review "The killing of a sacred deer."... It's the most uncomfortable movie I've seen in a while and the dialogue is just off. I loved it.
My mom and I saw this movie and we were the only ones in the theater. By the end of it, we were shaking our heads in disbelief and laughing at the insanity that was going on. Not what we were expecting when we walked in the theater, but definitely enjoyed it. When the mom’s body floated up to the treehouse, we had given up trying to figure it out and just went along with it lol. Toni Collette was totally amazing
another thing i found interesting is that when toni meets the other crazy cult lady at the art store you can see that the cult lady has a chalkboard in her trunk like she just picked it up today
I watched it alone and it scared the shit out of me. Until the goofy ending but whatever. I can actually see why some may call it "generic" because there were some familiar aspects to the scares but the way they're arranged and executed were wholly original in my opinion.
U guys had me rolling. This movie gripped me in a way that no horror type of movie has done to me in a while, which was great, but u guys got me wit the tinkerbell reference, "clap for paimon", hilarious. U guys r great, cheers +_0
I think the mom knew about the ritual subconsciously. She might’ve been trying to save her son from being possessed by killing him when she was sleepwalking. Just like the woman who mentions that her son and grandson drowned. That could’ve also been a murder suicide to avoid the ritual.
So i went to see this movie a few days ago as well and the most terrifying experience about it was this guy sitting next to me in the cinema. There were some teeneagers laughing real hard pretty much thru out the whole movie and at one point he just yelled at them. Soo i ended up being scared that it's gonna get even more silly and i won't be able to hold the laughter back and he's gonna yell at me as well... By the end tho he was trying to keep his face straight and seem really sereous but you could see he wanted to laugh at those floating bodies too... Really good movie tho, i'm still not sure if i understood what was really going on but maybe that's the point i dunno..
The reason the mother encouraged the girl to go to the party is because the son told her it was a school barbecue thing, so she probably thought it was age appropriate.
I went with my friend to see this movie and we are both huge weenies so we were freaking out! Hilariously though, the guy behind us picked up on it and started randomly doing the tongue pops throughout the film and it took us a few times to realize it was him 😭
“And they were walnuts, which are expensive” 😂 also I took a first date to that movie and “the moment” I turned to him and mouth “I’m so so sorry I brought you.”
The reason why I think that the daughter didn’t bring her epipen is bc she thought this was a school barbecue so then they would already make sure that everything is peanut free bc like schools do that bc they don’t want a chance of Of an allergic reaction
The dad found her sleeping at the tree house without a heater and said she could freeze to death and she was like 'it's okay'. The kid wanted to die from the get go probably bc of depression. She ate anything with nuts for a reason.
I’ve seen the movie, so I couldn’t WAIT for you to bring up the nuts. THOSE DAMN WALNUTS. The chopping of the nuts at the party was the single most bizarre thing about this movie. 🥜🥜🥜
No, it all depends on what your definition of horror is. I personally loved that this film was disguised like a drama, to only reveal itself at the end. I researched alot of these rituals, and symbols presented in this film so I caught them. Every scene had a purpose, and because I noticed I was tensed the fuck up. The movie is a mind fuck, it had a authentic feeling to it. I think it was trying to trick us to think it was just a mental disorder. I personally feel like that's the genius of it, that's where the terror is for me. The devil has a way of making you feel like it doesn't exist until he reveals himself. I loved every second of this. Wish you enjoyed it more though.
@@johnt84 to be fair, I think Aster has tapped into something culturally that just doesn't resonate with me specifically. I may not be the audience for his films. He appears to be the voice that newer horror audiences gravitate to, but I've seen everything, and know his influences cinematically(as far as the two films he's done), so it's just not grabbing me.
@@21stcenturyhiphop Yeah, I feel you. I'm old school as it gets, but I really see potential in the guys style of movie making. Definitely, a interesting character.
suit yourself I agree. Or, ideally for me - were we not living in a corporate, capitalist regulated "democracy", they would give "P.T" a chance. But, no one can play it anymore. But I digress. Haunted house hunting events could be in their patreon tier (of course it would have to be only local events but I trust the duchess she would provide).
Better you than me. Although now I almost want to see it so I can Avaryl 'yasss'at the house and Toni Colette's floating body hahaha I think it's just made more fabulous through your recounting.
That little girl needed Latrice Royale to come in and save her!
"Get those NUTS away from MY face!"
DarkMask6667 😂😂😂😂
Dead.
😂😂😂😂
Lmaoooo
Lmaooooooo YESSSS!!!!!! and Alyssa Edwards doing the tongue pop.. she just needed the drag g-ds!!

I'm just not pressing play if I'm concerned about spoilers lol
Fancy way of saying “I will watch movie bitches under every circumstance”
For real
“A couple of times I was like ‘oh, I don’t care for THAT.’” - Avaryl speaks for me.
Can also imagine you two house hunting:
"This house is cheap, but haunted"
"But the kitchen is fabulous! Look at this finish and craftmanship, yas! We'll take it!"
fucking love this movie lmao. i don't understand mainstream horror fans tbh, it's like they're completely emotionally deadened and need a steady stream of jump scares to feel alive
I feel the exact same way
I'm an A24 fan, so I was really looking forward to this movie.
It makes me want to watch The Witch & Mother now
Andrews reason to go see the film: Tony Collette
Avaryl's Reason: To see Andrew's expressions get more confused and weirder as the film progressed
Would the first half of this movie have been scarier if it had been narrated by Katya???? "Mother! I've become a mother agaaainnn..." "Mother I'm presenting artefacts for violence again..." "Mother, I've confused myself with my own message again."
Here for it
Alternately, it could have been more hilarious if it was narrated by Penny Marshall.
"Being a mom is HARD!
Covering your son in paint thinner
Sawing off your own head to summon a demon
Your running on NO SLEEP!"
Mother! I’m cutting off my head to transport my demon spirit to my son again....”
The fact that Avaryl just made a Howl's Moving Castle reference, which made my day btw, and now I wanna see you guys review Ghibli movies.
Niña Loyola 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Yes oh yes yes yes yes yes yes!!
Oh my god yes!! 😍
Andrew saying he’s never listening to us again is so reminiscent of AS3 Shangela breaking the 4th wall and blaming us for Trixie’s Snatch Game haha 😂
You guys are good to your fans - thanks for the review! 💕
i’m 17 and i hate walnuts 0/10 would not go to this party
but also i felt completely the same about this movie. like everything you said was what i thought
I don't agree that nothing happened in the first hour. IMO the movie was perfectly paced esp. as an homage to Rosemary's Baby + Ordinary People (per the director). But 😍 at the epiphany on why the house was so cold.
I liked the pace too and I was really into it the whole time. My bf fell asleep during his first two attempts at watching it lol.
I full-on LOVED this movie, but your re-cut trailer with the black comedy music ... I want to see THAT movie even MORE.
"THE SYMBOOOOL ISSSS………… SYMBOOOOLIC OOooOOoo"
LMAOOOO hahahahahahahahaah love you guys
Ooky, spooky, megamalooky, ding dang dooky
I laughed so hard throughout this Review 😂 Some of my favorite parts: the Andrew chart (2:10) Avaryl's jumpscare (5:38) the Addams family edit (16:00) WALNUTS! (28:07) the EDM/tongue pop remix (36:30) Tinkerbell (41:36) Hail Paimon (51:16)
I’d like to add Avaryl’s ADRed HOUSE (38:10)
I personally loved this movie, but it definitely should've been marketed as a bit more of a family drama/horror than "The New Exorcist" (the movie is way more similar to Rosemary's Baby imo). you took me there honestly
I'm waiting for the House & Garden coffee table book. Nuts To You - Allergy Free Recipes & The Fabulous Kitchens They Are Made In.

I think it was implied she had a reaction cos they used the same knife to cut cake as they did to chop the walnuts ... still funny though
They cut the cake with the same knife they chopped the walnuts. That’s how she had a reaction. That’s what I assumed.
oh my god that santa fe lawn art smokey the bear shot i can not stop laughing
it really reminded me of rosemary's baby, not horror in the scary sense, just kinda twisted and ooky spooky. it's probably just as long as well.
I agree completely. I think the film should've been marketed as something more akin to that film than The Exorcist. Both films also have the whole creepy cult controlling everything from afar thing going on. I would also compare this film, stylistically, to The Shining.

Have you guys ever seen Death at a Funeral (British version.)? That’s a fun dark comedy if you want a movie about death and funerals and parents!
speaking of black comedy....Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Retro Review?
I can listen to Avaryl and Andrew imitate night club music for hours on end
I took my grandma to see this movie and both of us gasped when the car "accident" happened. Loved this movie, wasn't what I expected but I enjoy horror/suspense movies that aren't just jumpscares.
Who takes their grandma to a movie that isn't a Julie Andrews musical?
She sounds like one cool lady.
aussieskates the same type of person who's grandma drinks and swears like a sailor 😂
OMG I TOOK MY GRANDMA TOO!! We loved it but after I left I went to her “bitch if you try to sacrifice my family to paimon make sure I’m the vessel”
I want you guys to retro review The Shining because I need to see Andrew's reactions to that.
YALL HAVE TO REVIEW “THE SWEETEST THING” WITH CHRISTINA APPLEGATE. ITS SUCH A BAD MOVIE ITS FABULOUS ❤️
FUCK YESSS!!! Me and my sisters watched this movie all the time.
I can only begin to imagine Avaryl and Andrew recreating the movie montage!
I love when you talk about the other people in the theater with you. 😂😂
My favorite movie of the year. I legit see nothing taking it away from this. I walked out and wanted to see it again INSTANTLY!
I was about to say that the alternative score sounded a bit "Addams family"-ish :-D
So, I haven't watched the review yet, but I'm having some really horrible personal shit going on right now, like literally in the past hour, and you guys uploaded this review, which I've been dying to see, and it's an hour long, which makes me even more grateful, because this movie has so much content to discuss. The time spent on that pie graph was well worth it! SO DAMN FUNNY!!!
28:00 Wait walnuts are expensive in US? The more you know...
Gurl everything is expensive in the US...
Yes. Pecans too. I’m allergic to tree nuts.
Peanuts are not tree nuts. They are legumes (beans).
Someone mentioned that Charlie was eating peanut M&Ms which is possible.
Thank you for not showing a lot of scary shots. Describing it was scary enough. LOVED judgey eyed Smokey the Bear🤣
I think because Charlie was always eating chocolate (since she was Paimon, a king of hell) to be a reference to devil's food cake
I really enjoyed this film on the second viewing. I wasn't sure how I felt about it the first time, as it was so unusual... But then I couldn't stop thinking about it, so went again. I really dug what it was doing the second time! And, yes, Toni Collette is INCREDIBLE!

OMML retro review Lost Boys PLEASE!!!! The absolute best homoerotic 80s vampire movie ((also the only good movie joel Schumacher ever made))
Whooooooo is responsible for the edits?? I mean 39:14 and the random flame cuts LOL
That Howl's Moving Castle comparison fucking killed me.
The jump scare at 5:38 scared me Avaryl!
I need to rewatch it, but I felt like the constant background heartbeat-like sound really added dimension/atmosphere to the movie. At the end of the felt like maybe he wasn't possessed by paymen but all the worshippers thought he was. So he had to deal with that.

I really enjoyed the movie and you guys review.
are you kidding me I thought the walnuts were taco meat
I thought they were lentils.
teens love taco meat
“WAAAALLLNUUUTS!!!” Oh my god I love you for that, Avaryl!
"...and they were walnuts, which are expeeeeeensive!" LMAO......although i loved this movie for many reasons, I love your review to the point that i'm obsessed LOL
I loved loved loved this movie so so much. Me & my partner were blown away. It’s not scary but it’s fabulous
How is it that you guys still haven’t been aproached to give commentary ala Mystery Science Theater... i would pay for that...
Ahem... www.patreon.com/moviebitches ;)
Omg I'm so happy someone else noticed the rave soundtrack!! I kept looking at the wall like is someone watch Triple X or something in there??
I know people IRL with severe nut allergies. You never leave home without that epipen.
In Andrew you can see how not understanding the film makes it hard to like it.
My take away from this is that Hereditary is The Sixth Sense meets Muriel's Wedding. Great review, team.
I think the mom knew about the ritual subconsciously. She might’ve been trying to save her son from being possessed by killing him when she was sleepwalking. Just like the woman who mentions that her son and grandson drowned. That could’ve also been a murder suicide to avoid the ritual.
Marcos Darbyshire how do you know?
The naked people in the attic were supervising the candles 😂😂
So it’s well established by now that Avaryl says “gowned” rather than “gown”, but did anyone else catch her saying “lawned” instead of “lawn”?
Toni Collette on the ceiling was very Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The reason the mother encouraged the girl to go to the party is because the son told her it was a school barbecue thing, so she probably thought it was age appropriate.
I went with my friend to see this movie and we are both huge weenies so we were freaking out! Hilariously though, the guy behind us picked up on it and started randomly doing the tongue pops throughout the film and it took us a few times to realize it was him 😭
“And they were walnuts, which are expensive” 😂 also I took a first date to that movie and “the moment” I turned to him and mouth “I’m so so sorry I brought you.”
Tongue pops. EDM. Tinker Bell. This movie sounds sickeninnng *death drops*
The reason why I think that the daughter didn’t bring her epipen is bc she thought this was a school barbecue so then they would already make sure that everything is peanut free bc like schools do that bc they don’t want a chance of Of an allergic reaction
i don't even watch horror movies but I will watch you two always!
You guys should review Wait Until Dark for a RetroReview!!! :)
The dad found her sleeping at the tree house without a heater and said she could freeze to death and she was like 'it's okay'. The kid wanted to die from the get go probably bc of depression. She ate anything with nuts for a reason.
I spend all the movie scared shirtless. It's funny how horror movies read so different for different people.
Your edit of Billy from Hocus Pocus getting his head knocked off made me spray my coffee from laughing. That was too perfect.
You all didn't talk about the desk scene. I think that's the scariest scene. Spooky
I watched mamma mia 2 last night and now I'm so impatient for you to shred it apart, is that happening soon?
I’ve seen the movie, so I couldn’t WAIT for you to bring up the nuts. THOSE DAMN WALNUTS. The chopping of the nuts at the party was the single most bizarre thing about this movie. 🥜🥜🥜
Oooommmgggg Andrew please plaaaase let this open you up to seeing more horror movies!!! Avaryl, try to lure him please! xoxoxo love u crazy cats💖
Thank god you guys talked about the walnuts!!!
you guys are absolutely correct; this movie was a comedy. when looked at through that lense, it's good. as a horror, it sucks.
I see comments mentioning "Avaryl yaaaas at the house" and I am satisfied. #GoingtogyminJulyishard
Haunted House Hunting starring the moviebitches needs to happen!
suit yourself I agree.
We are going to get to the party i swear
Thank you guys for reviewing a little bit of every genre always fabulous reviewers!!❤
Are we going to talk about how he did that a fun and kooky head-desk dance in class?...No? Okay.
Better you than me. Although now I almost want to see it so I can Avaryl 'yasss'at the house and Toni Colette's floating body hahaha I think it's just made more fabulous through your recounting.
