Frank Gambale raised the bar very high and sent many people home to hopelessly woodshed and many others to sell their instruments. But at the same time brought inspiration. Who the hell does that? And STILL kickin ass!!!
I believe Frank will always be the best when it comes to sweep picking because he developed his technique in the area as a result of chasing a specific sound as opposed to mindlessly sweeping arpeggios up and down the neck like so many shredders do. Whereas Yngwie developed his sweep picking to emulate violinists, Frank was inspired by the great saxophonists. As a result, his phrasing is every bit as good as his picking is.
Nice to see this picking up a bit, but guys, PLEASE... stop embarrassing yourself by feeling that this title is an attack on your favourite player. As much as I enjoy laughing at them, no, Jason Becker, Guthrie Govan, Jason Richardson, Synyster Gates, John Petrucci, Malmsteen, Shawn Lane (didn't really sweep), Matteo Mancuso (literally doesn't sweep), Tony Macalpine, Steve Vai, Polyphia etc... aren't even CLOSE to this. All comments like that show is that you didn't come here to enjoy learning about something new, you just wanted to assert your taste. Really seriously now, listen to what Frank is doing here at 1:08 or 1:34 or 1:58 or 2:11 or 2:19 or 2:29. Really listen. Look at the tab. Then come back and tell me how your hero is better. Spoilers, Frank isn't my hero. He's a tremendous player, and as students of the guitar, to not be able to acknowledge and respect that is worrying. I don't play anything like this. I also don't want to... but come on... to put this on the same page as DRAGONFORCE makes you look beyond stupid.
He's talented yes. Without a doubt a virtuoso. But, in my opinion his music is terrible. His playing boring. Complex doesn't make something better, it just makes it complex. It's wonderful if you believe he's the best or amazing. Cool, but let's not confuse complex with good music. I'll take an emotional sloppy Slash solo any day of the week over this. Again, Frank is very very talented, no hate on him, it's just boring for me. You seem very bitter, you posted something in a public space. Of course people will have opinions and comments, get over it.
You did great with the title to get the shred folks riled up. Most purely rock/metal shred folks can't appreciate the musical sophistication - he's playing improvised economy picking lines, responding to the players around him and not pre-composed sweep patterns that most of the metal guys mostly play.
Jesus... this electric band track has done a lot for me personally. It has inspired me to further my knowledge and gather a fusion project of my own. Outmost respect for each one of this lads individually.
I mean the video of Jason Richardson playing Jason Becker’s song on Jason Becker’s guitar is the craziest and cleanest sweeping you can find on TH-cam.
I would actually agree with this if it wasn't for the fact he had modern learning resources. Yeah its super clean, but compare that to Becker who actually wrote Serrena when he was 17 in pre internet days. Also Richardsons music is pretty bad, hes like those instagram guitarists who think shredding over lame drop tuned riffs is the pinnacle of music (think berried alive, its terrible). It's just my opinion, dont take this as fact.
Guthrie does this kinda stuff, and to my ear it sounds more musical. While your looking at fusion players who are all incredible btw on a wee aside but they really are all immense musicians. You’ve got to look at Holdsworth stuff too who always seems just that bit more spectacular than your average incredible out of this world guitar player. All these guys tho are genuinely incredible and its always a listener preference thing than a one better than the other guitar player thing cause they are all possessed with incredible and immaculate technique
"to my ear" bad news mate, your ears are painted on. Guthrie literally doesn't dabble in this kind of sweeping, let alone do it extensively. So, why does that say about your Holdsworth assessment?
I remember Frank Gambale giving me a chord sketch of. Stella By Starlight. And rather than using a major or a minor scale representing each chord, Frank wrote out the MODES he used for each chord..... the way Frank thinks is amazing🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎁🎁🎂🎂

@@biscobisco1882 I disagree. What he's doing is not only pretty ridiculous but frequently not even in the proper key for the music. Doesn't matter anyway. Typical jazz self-indulgent nonsense. You hear ten jazz tunes and you've heard all of this before.

Your comment is nothing but bitter opinion, and the guy before me using the term 'ridiculous' meant it is a compliment you dope.
I wrote him off for so long for the dumbest reasons lol. People always praised his work as a soloist so I had this image of a super-Strat wielding guy, but I always saw him in magazine ads and articles with big goofy hollowbody signature guitars and that silly trilby hat over the years. Little did I realize he is one of the best guitar players out there. His material spans decades and if one wants a master class on phrasing and melody, he's one of my favorites.
I always wondered the same myself, and great improvisers "just" have a large large catalogue of different licks, and they know how to play them in different keys and connect them. I always used to think all those "learn these licks" articles in magazines I read were silly. I'd say, no, I just want to improvise for real, make it up as I go. Well there is some of that but over the years I've come to learn it's just years and years of learning different little licks, making up or own, and practicing improvising. For example, what someone like Stevie Ray Vaughn improvise, and short of getting flamed for saying his solos sound the same, his licks are so distinct once you listen to him a lot you realize they are built of different peices that are arranged in different ways. This was super long, but hopefully you get the point?
I think improvising is similar to being a great fighter as in you know a lot of moves, have a signature style, and know which punches or blocks to use based on what your opponent throws at you. Whichs riffs and licks are you going to play based on what the rythm section is doing? And you could base that off it as a whole, or one particular instrument. That's when you start to get into the odder sounding jazz stuff.

You might not like Michael Angelo Batio , but his sweeping, really can’t be beat.
@@luvyesmusici4886 for me jason becker was the best
@@matiasibarzabal2249 I only have time and money for only so many artists. lol
I am a little familiar with the work and music he made with Marty. He sounded great! No one deserves what sadly happened to Jason. I can only imagine.
I hope your holidays are safe and happy. :-)
No one alternate picks like Anton&Roy,not even Shawn😊btw; When he chooses to do so,Frank’s alternate picking is on par with the aforementioned! BUT,Frank is so much more than a “picker”;for one, using his singularly unique playing mechanics,he has developed a singularly unique melodic&rhythmic vocabulary ❤!
One of the greatest guitarist ever!
I've never heard of this dude and he's amazing. Looking him up immediately and heading to Spotify
same!
Had the good fortune to see Frank do a masterclass at LIPA (Paul McCartney school of performing arts) and to see this level of technical ability and musicianship up close was life changing 🙏
Wow I usually hate this kind of jazz but I kept listening and this guy completely blew my mind to pieces. I am in utter amazement.
Playing seamlessly through the changes with insane chops.
Amazing. Thank you for these postings with the tabs.
Frank Gambale is like the Shawn Lane of sweep picking that no one comes close to 35 years later
Amazing. Give Jason Richardson a listen
Rusty Cooley.
@@leehanson1416 duuuude thank you!! Lol this guy is amazing and all but I thought of a few metal guitarists who would "sweep" the floor with him. Rusty Cooley being one of them.
@@BlastHands Back in the day I took lessons in person from Rusty, so I'm a bit biased. I never learned to sweep like he can, that's for sure, but Rusty is a good teacher for any skill level. He has a teaching studio a half-mile from my house.
Frank Gambale raised the bar very high and sent many people home to hopelessly woodshed and many others to sell their instruments. But at the same time brought inspiration. Who the hell does that? And STILL kickin ass!!!
Frank Gambale is among three of my favorite guitar players, the other two being Alan Holdsworth and Shawn Lane RIP to both of them.
with such ease.. amazing
What an awesome piece of guitar work, very inspiring, both creatively and technically. Thank you for sharing.
FG is the best! Once I tried to learn his “monster lick” stuff, the only thing that I had to give up. Sad memories 😢😂😂
Musicians having fun playing. All love.
I agree with you, Frank has the ultimate bag of tricks. Him and Holdsworth are my fusion kings!
I think your embarrassing 😳 yourself dude if you think this hack is better thsn Becker or Lane , stop smoking 🚬 weed bruv
@@mysterymidnightmurders Yeah the guy needs to learn to accept his critics , he's acting like a snob
All I see is you being a condescending douchebag to anyone with a different opinion.
You did great with the title to get the shred folks riled up. Most purely rock/metal shred folks can't appreciate the musical sophistication - he's playing improvised economy picking lines, responding to the players around him and not pre-composed sweep patterns that most of the metal guys mostly play.
Frank Gambale is an absolute beast
Other guitar players would be much more safer if he was locked up and put away.
There's enough clams in that solo to feed the whole band chowder.
'I can do that, here hold my beer'
'Yes but can he play smoke on the water?'
'It's all about the feel'
Did I miss any?
‘he’s miming to a backing track’
less is more
Another outstanding transcription! An analytical ability equal to the level of playing on display!
I think besides everything else his technique is very aggressive in a great way....most of the notes are intense.
Jesus... this electric band track has done a lot for me personally.
Maaaan, after the most kilin solo, he just subtly returns to a few notes, blending right back in. What a killer.
@@LeviClay Man you are hilarious😂
I remember Frank Gambale giving me a chord sketch of. Stella By Starlight. And rather than using a major or a minor scale representing each chord, Frank wrote out the MODES he used for each chord..... the way Frank thinks is amazing🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎁🎁🎂🎂
I don't enjoy this style of music at all, but Frank's playing is just out of this world. Incredible technique.

What he is doing is ridiculous but it in no way moves me. I don’t feel anything other than impressed by how many notes he’s playing.
@@dekan15301 No one asked.
@@biscobisco1882 I disagree. What he's doing is not only pretty ridiculous but frequently not even in the proper key for the music. Doesn't matter anyway. Typical jazz self-indulgent nonsense. You hear ten jazz tunes and you've heard all of this before.
@@sarcasticguy4311 Define 'ridiculous' and tell us what the 'proper key' is and why exactly you don't think you can use notes outside it, which is a hallmark of jazz, blues, rock and yes, classical music.
The phrasing and musicality of this set is so nuts. Sweeping isnt hard to master but how on earth do you improvise this way?
sweeping is insanely hard to master for a large % of guitarists.
Lol, imo sweeping is the hardest technique to master
@@negativexmilitia1 , you nailed it..... There riffs/phrases that have been practiced when you hear this kind of stuff .... It's not all just off the top of their head......
Damn! Some crazy technical sweeps there.
Alternate title: "You can't play that many wrong notes while keeping a straight face."
his instruction series to me is the best teaching ever made
Great Jazz playing but come on have none of you ever heard of Jason Becker? He is the Shred Master 🎸
Christine. You’re embarrassing yourself. Stop.
@@LeviClay So you have no idea who Jason Becker is then ? Lets see you compose music if you had ALS , Most players would kill themselves in that condition but JB had the guts to carry on , anyway your the embarrassment loser , why are you even talking to me ? Your not worthy of my opinion.

People come here to learn. You don’t want to learn, so yes, the channel isn’t do you.
As for you “he probably can’t even play”, I think that highlights everything we need to know about you. You could have found that was wrong with just a few seconds of looking into it… but much like you original comment shows… you can’t be bothered. It’s easier to just assume you know something right? 😂
Saw him in Nashville with this line up, CC & Elektric Band…….. outstanding 👌
You’re killing it with the content lately, Levi.
I got to see this version of the band back in ‘87 when I was a first year college student. I didn’t really know what was going on, but it really impressed me.
