The History Of Reworks That FAILED In League Of Legends

  • Throughout League's entire history, many champions were reworked or reimagined to have a more healthy, modernized, and engaging playstyle. For the most part, the majority of them have turned out for the better, but there were a few that turned out so bad that they actually had to get REVERTED (or in some cases reworked again). Today we'll be going through some of League's Failed Reworks!

      Toggle Sol was very unhealthy for the game. Many high elo mid laners complained, and rightfully so, about how uninteractive and elo inflated the champ is with toggle W. On paper it sounds good being able to keep the W at max range for a while and kite while fighting but in reality a big part of toggle W's strength was the perma shove it provided. Asol players would press W and shove the wave and then instantly roam with E (mind you at the time E gave movement speed so he didn't even need to activate it and instead could just move down the river very fast). The champ was also deemed to be an extreme dissapointment from the community. Asol is one of the champions who players stop playing completely after a few games. There's nothing wrong with a champion who is unpopular but when then the champion is unpopular due to disappointment and not just a lack of clicking with them, it's a kit that needs to be changed

    • @bobthebuilder6521

      People who want old toggle are clueless to how strong toggle Asol actually was. The champ just perma shoves, wins almost every 1v1 early game (so you can't contest minions), and impacted all lanes. There is a good reason he was changed.

    Malzahar I feel is a champion that would be better reverted to his pre season 6 self, his passive has eaten so much of his power budget and exaggerates the "R-bot" stigma he's had for ages, he has lost base stats(most importantly 50 auto range and 5 ms), damage, voidlings existing, and an entire ability(a really cool one too) all to keep that damn passive. His R is actually a pretty fair ability most of the time, being the only cc spell in the game to cc himself but because of the spellshield the usual counterplay of interrupting the r ceases to exist because now you have to delay that cc and by then his target is dead. The only thing I'd think would be worth to keep from old Malz is the e refresh minigame, that was cool, the current q silence duration is also significantly fairer but as of now Malzahar's kit has been reduced from a strong DOT mage with zone control that could singlehandedly win sieges to.. get bullied early game, wave clear spam at LC, press r. All to keep the spellshield.

    1) His poison apply healing reduction ;

    I think the Kog'Maw rework is in an incredibly interesting spot. On the one hand, like you mention, Riot hardly ever reverts anything and them doing so is overtly admitting that the change in question was a mistake. However, with the new champion rework polls, Kog'Maw was listed as an option in the most recent one, and the short blurb they had about Kog'Maw's potential rework should he win the poll was the SAME DAMN THING AS HIS REVERTED REWORK. They were like "we would want to focus his design as the premier "protect the puppy" adc, and his artillery mage playstyle may fall to the wayside". I am paraphrasing here but that was the jist. As an AP Kog'Maw player I am obviously extremely biased against the "protect the puppy" role that Kog'Maw has, but the vision they described in the rework poll was exactly the same changes they made to him in his scrapped rework, which I find incredibly bizzare. I also feel like, with how few dedicated artillery mages there are in the game and how MANY hyper-scaling carries we have, that AP Kog'Maw is simply the healthier design both for the game in a vacuum and for champion diversity compared to the rest of the cast. Like seriously, Xerath, Kog'Maw, Vel'Koz, maybe Lux? Vex WAS SUPPOSED TO BE AN ARTILLERY MAGE and they apparently scrapped that version of her kit entirely, are we really going to remove ~20% of an entire classes champion pool just to make the same terrible changes that already got reverted?
    Probably...

    • @koroxo1152
      @koroxo1152 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      To be honest I also wouldn't want to see the kog'maw adc removed because its role is quite unique, it's genuinely the most on-hit damage focused adc.
      The rest of the Adc pool only situationally uses the on-hit (Excluding Bork) and then goes directly to crit unless it is a unique case like Ezreal
      Kog as an artillery mage uses literally only 2 skills to work that are very good to me and it is a playstyle that I like and even the safest to play but I think that if they eliminate that terrible passive and genuinely balance the kit both styles can work .
      At the end of the day, he is a creature of the void and creating a kit that allows both playstyles is not impossible, especially since kaisa exists...

    • @fisherjohnson1642
      @fisherjohnson1642 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can agree with this, although the one point I'll make is that I personally think AP kog uses the whole kit better, you say he only uses two spells but I literally level W up second for lane because it is his main way to trade even in solo lanes, and I think AP kog actually gets MORE use out of q than ad kog, he doesn't care about the attack speed but the ability itself does a lot of damage. That, and ad kog has had balance points where he didn't even take e until like level 15 when you have to, plus casting ukt is dps negative on ad kog so I feel like ad kog is actually the one using only 2/4 spells

      Eventually you transition to a full artillery mage or an on-hit submachine gun.

    Kog'maw's ultimate was also reworked. Before the marksman class update it wasn't an execute and had higher upfront damage. This made Living Artillery less effective as a poke and scouting tool, instead encouraging using it to pick off targets. It's subtle, but since the mana cost prohibits using it too frequently it inverts how you get the most out of the ability and effectively punishes scouting. This change has yet to be reverted.

    difficult to find value with. It hardly did any damage, moving people around was done a lot better by the original version, and the range was often too low to ever move people too fatally out of position. However, my favorite Zac play I've ever done was slingshotting into baron pit while the enemy was taking it, stealing the enemy jungler back over the wall, and flashing back over to smite and steal it. I've never felt more like a god than in that moment. Obviously, new q is better, and I'm very glad they kept it, but I don't miss the ult.

    I think the "reworked" Leblanc was fantastic, she had counter play since you could predict when she deals damage and she had the wave clear she was struggling with, I don't know why that iteration of Leblanc didn't resonate with the playerbase.
    I would also considered failed reworked the ones that destroyed the champion's purpose and made it absolutely unpopular, I would see Quinn's rework during the Marskman update as a failure too since she is not being played in the adc role anymore and even as a toplaner, she's terrible as she brings nothing but damage and she scales poorly.

I loved the Rengar Q's and the animations... I played and loved so much Leblanc with that sweet clear wave and mechanics (the best part was the clone by far, it was so funny seeing enemies getting scared and felt so big brain after walking straight for a gank after tricking them before)... And not only those, don't get me started on Talon dope af and Shaco still one of mine most played champion... When they announced they would revert those reworks droped like a bomb and was even worst when testing for the first time the old kit (as I said before, I was used to only the reworked kit of those champions, especially Leblanc) I felt so clumsy, although it was basically the same kit (so bad that I indeed stopped playing Lb after and still to this day never came back completely). • @ZerglingOne1
    @ZerglingOne1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So, while I don't think a full revert would make him healthier, I think Sion would be better off with a kit closer to his old one. First of all, he was never meant to be a poke mage. That was a consequence of constant nerfs of mages, leaving him with amazing ratios on 2 abilities that were both offensive and defensive, while being almost impossible to miss. But that was never intended. He was ALWAYS intended to be a tanky bruiser with drain tank capabilities if you couldn't run away from him effectively. They reworked him into a tank that yells at minions, with the lowest base HP in the entire game and one of the slowest scaling mechanics (woo 12 HP per wave, sometimes 14). And while he has been tuned back to be more of a tank, he is still a very poorly designed character. A character that is incredibly slow 99.9% of the time with very slow abilities just does not feel good to play late game, especially an infinite scaling character. Also, death oriented passives are bad. Can we all agree there?
    His passive should be his health stacking mechanic.
    His Q needs to be faster, but less devastating
    His W is fine but its damage should scale off of Sion's health, not the enemy's...the fact that it doesn't is kinda moronic.
    His E needs a complete rework. It's not good, and was never good. It was shoehorned in as an homage to the wildly popular at the time, Skyrim, but I think it's worn out its welcome. I think something where he throws his axe out on the first cast, and then quickly drags it back, dealing damage on the way out and back, slowing and applying armor reduction would be good.
    His R should cause him to drop his axe and charge (like it currently does) and when he arrives, he has changed abilities until he uses his E, but also gains the attack speed and life steal of his current passive (but with reduced numbers until 16+ since he doesn't degen health).
    Ultimate Q would instead of a knock up in front of him, be a much faster knock up around him, but for less duration.
    Ultimate W wouldn't give him a shield, but would explode the damage immediately.
    And ultimate E would end the ult and deal increased damage based on how far the axe traveled.
    This would give him 3 important roles. Burst damage, sustained damage, or tank. Which I think is something a juggernaut class member should always have the option of, as we see in the case of Garen and Darius, the 2 most famous members of the class. In accordance with the class, he has no inherent dashes or movement speed independent abilities. But I think he needs this as a sort of rework.

    Fun detail: there's also the rework that got reverted before it even released. There was a plan to rework Riven a few years ago, changing her passive to get rid of the animation cancelling bug abuse that she's been doing since forever. The reworked kit would give her a resource called "edge" (yeah, I know) that she had too manage.
    I don't know if the backlash was something fierce or if it was just bonkers broken, but Riot changed their minds and pulled the rework from the PBE before it hit live servers. Now usually the PBE is for showing off new stuff and catching bugs, not to make game balance decisions. So pulling a rework when it was essentially fully ready to go is very out of the ordinary.

    I think Karma's 5.10 rework was a failure that deserved to be reverted:
    1. It failed to create to the Mantra diversity Riot aimed for.
    2. It forced her to have separate builds for each Mantra to be optimal, as they all scale from different stats.
    3. It took away her most iconic ability (shield bomb).
    I could go on but you get the point... they made her generic and boring, and created numerous balance issues which never would have occurred if they'd left her.

    Old Ryze [around Season 3] WAS the epitome of a classic APC! I miss it.

    Man I still remember the whole community getting excited over a champion breaking the attack speed cap and I can't remember correctly but wasn't it 6.0 attack speed or was it in the same patched that attack speed got nerfed from 3.0 to 2.5
