    I discovered your channel recently when I was looking for information about reupholstering couch cushions. While you are both expert upholsterers, what brought me back was the beautiy of your relationship; there is something so special going on between the two of you. Clicking on your link to look at foam pricing, it was expired. I Googled, and my heart broke to learn of your father's passing 💔 Truly. I have been thinking of your family ever since. Grant, I hope the memories of filming these vides with your father bring you peace and joy always.

    1. I would like to compliment you both on how polite you are to each other; I am very impressed by that. 2. Thank you for sharing how to replace cushions. My husband and I recently bought foam to replace our seat cushions and basically winged it, but after watching your videos we see that we are not that far off. What we were surprised to learn when we deconstructed the seat cushions (hoping to use them for our back cushions that were filled with polyfill) was that the seat cushions have springs in the center. No wonder they did not hold up!!!! So what we have done is remove one side of the seat cushion, wrapped batting around it and shoved it into the back cushion (we removed the polyfill). If this does not work, we will get the less denser foam that you refer to in this video.

      Hey there Erin, thank you for watching and leaving a comment. Yes it’s an ongoing problem with pets, and with poly fill back cushions. Note the solid foam in the video would help a lot, but there is an alternative is a double shredded foam easier to work with and faster to get done. But it’s not quite as resilient as a solid piece of foam but it’s the next best thing . Here’s the video title, for some reason it link the video I don’t think. Hi. your videos are very informative. Thank you for making this video. Before i saw these videos, I had bought 2.8 density 50 compression foam for my couch seats. That is the perfect firmness for us. We want a somewhat firm back foam cushion too. In this video you mention to not go more than 20 compression for back seating foam. What would you recommend as a back foam for us- i mean what density/compression? The 2 men who use this couch are over 200lbs and over 6ft tall :) I first thought that 2.8 density and 35 compression back cushion might be ok but worried it might be too firm so thinking of the 2.6 density and 27 compression foram? Thoughts? I dont see a reason to buy a 1.8 density foam when similar compressions or firmness is available in the 2.8/

    I've wanted to know what makes a quality cushion for a long time. Thank you for sharing your expertise. Do you still plan to show how to replace the knife edge back cushion shown at 3:15? Is it possible to replace or convert a knife edge polyfill back box cushions?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Julia, thank you for your comment. Yes we do have plans to do the knife edge cushion. However we have been so very busy not sure when we can. Yes you can convert a knife edged cushion into a boxed. HOWEVER, not easily the top of the cushion the fabric and the sides is making the bands. PLUS you would need fabric for the bands themselves,you CAN NOT use the existing fabric on the cushion tops and the sides as bands. I don't know if you have extra matching fabric or not for this task. In short you can, but I don't see it to easy or even worth it. I hope this has given you some idea of what's involved and has answered your question. Please share and subscribe. Cheers, Paul

    QUESTION: My friend has exact cushions you demonstrated. HOWEVER - back cushions are attached to back of the couch. Along the top back, and inner side - there are (2) cushions. There is a zipper along the bottom. You think I could get foam up in there, being they're attached at those two places? ALSO, depth of each cushion is 6 inches. Height is 21" x Width is 39". I think I could trace a pattern from existing cushion. Cut the foam. Line with Dacron. Sew a slip cover for ease of sliding in. I still might have to wrap in SilkEase and use a vacuum to squish it down enough to slip it into the cover. I like a challenge, but even I'm not sure I'm ready for this one. What do you think? I am a home sewer, but like to help friends and family when I can.

    This is a great tutorial. I very much appreciate the detail that you both include here. Given that you recommend a density of 18 and a compression of 20 for backing cushions I was a bit disappointed to see that UCSolutions doesn't carry this in their custom cut section. I'd rather not purchase an entire slab. Any suggestions?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello there, thank you for watching the video I’m glad you found it informative. The 1820 foam is only recommended for back cushions, as you stated in your comment. Back cushions can get very complicated that’s why we only sell the slab for individuals to do it themselves. There’s knife edge styles, L styles with curves going over the arm of the furniture, and some curve quite a bit sometimes. We don’t have a diagram that someone could follow and trace or measure the cushions themselves and for us to cut it. So I hope this makes sense I wish I could be more help to you but back cushions or a total different animal. Cheers, Paul

    Instead of using permanent marker, you can use an erasable fabric marker to trace around the fabric. (Found in fabric stores usually in the sewing notions area.) Those usually can be "washed" out with water and/or fade over time. This way you shouldn't have to worry if you accidentally hit the fabric. Then if you don't feel the line is dark enough to follow when cutting the foam you can just trace over it with the permanent marker.

    I thought you guys were friends! I had no idea you were dad and son! You rock! 💕💫
    This is THE best video! I inherited a couch that was squished because the back was filled with poly foam and feathers, and there’s three chambers inside the wrapping that goes inside the upholstery fabric.
    Any suggestions as to whether to supplement with poly foam and cover with Dacron, or put a cushion on it? I’d rather do that, but then I have to dump the insides and cut up the chambers (I’m guessing).
    Thank you for these videos and the tips! 💕💫

      Hey Kathryn,
      Thanks so much for watching our videos! We really appreciate your very kind compliments! In your case you have a few options for refreshing the back cushion. You could add more feathers to the channels. Or you could replace the feathers with our shredded back cushion foam. You could also replace the insert and use a solid foam piece if the cover is boxed with a band on top.
      I’d be happy to walk you through this project so if you have any other questions please let me know!

      @@ucsolutionsgivingmore Thank you so much for your offer to help me! I’m debating different options because I do have a dog who likes to sit on the back of the couch and look out the window, but I also want a new couch!
      Maybe if I give you the a description, you could let me know what would be my best option. There are two large cushions that have the extension on the sides that go over the arms. They are 6” thick and the longest part across each one is 42”. I know how to sew, so that may help!
      At first I was just going to do the foam cut to size with the Dacron around, but I don’t know if I should save the inside part where the feathers and batting are. I could also cut out the chambers and put the foam inside the inside cover. Or, I think you also offer the foam and cover to put inside the fabric of the couch. Or, as you said, fill it with “stuff” and staple Dacron around to fill it up more.
      When I looked online at Joann Fabrics, I saw foam and a silky cover to help it slide inside the cushion. Not sure about that.
      I need to do something that’s not too expensive because I’m having financial issues lately due to family and my own health problems.
      But, I’m sick of looking at a couch with no back cushions! Lol! It’s so attractive!
      Thank you so very much for responding! I never thought you would! I live in Michgan. Is shipping expensive to where I am? 💕💫🙏☀️

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have some great options there! I appreciate you describing your circumstances it does definitely help with making the right decision. The first option of adding additional fill to the current inserts and wrapping them with Dacron will be the least expensive. However, unfortunately, it doesn’t always last very long. Especially if your dog sits on top of the back cushions. The second option of replacing the current insert with a solid foam insert wrapped with dacron which is the best option for longevity however it is the most expensive. And replacing the current fill inside the insert cover with shredded foam is the best middle-ground option it’s less expensive than a solid insert and will hold up better than just adding additional fill. We do ship to Michigan and the flat rate cost for shipping is $30. ucsolutions Thanku for replying. I just want to know , Do you think most fabric lounges ( I think mine is a Polyester) It’s tightly woven and charcoal grey colour. I’ve only had it for about roughly 4 or 5 months. I love the style. It’s a two seater. The part where I’ve been sitting mostly has become a bit fluffy. Not complete pilling and mostly on the arm rest. Would you think this is normal from maybe friction from my clothes ? Against the fabric ? I’ve bought a fabric shaver with a protective shield covering the blade. So it says it’s safe and won’t make holes. Bit scared to use it though. Anyway, Do you think the fluffing/ slight pilling ? is a normal occurrence with fabric lounges. Sorry such a long message for one question. 🤪.

      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Marilyn, yes I do know what you’re talking about. I would consider that Pilling. The fabric shaver should not put a hole in the fabric, you should be fine using it. And a big no on that as far as is this normal. 4 to 5 months there’s no way it should be doing that. Sounds like it has a low double rub content or value. Double rubs are a way the fabric manufacturers test the durability of a fabric. I would prefer 13,000 double rubs and higher for any house furniture. So another words 20,000 double rubs would be 40,000 single passes of abrasion on the fabric before it starts doing what you’re talking about or possibly worse. It sounds like a low quality fabric unfortunately. Check the manufacturer and see if there’s a warranty, or perhaps you bought an extended warranty. I hope this helps you. Cheers, Paul

I think I’ll keep it for a while then buy a more expensive one from a different store. You get what you pay for I guess ? Thanks so much for the reply. P .S. I appreciate the information you gave me about the (Double Rubs). It will be on my mind when I go to buy a different more expensive lounge. And if the store can’t tell me about the fabric I’ll know why. This info you gave me should be helpful to a lot of other people reading this. Thanks again.

    Love your video, but I have a couple of questions: (1) Why are you adding in the 1/2 inch seam allowance? Is it to make sure the cushion fills out the area, knowing that it will compress when put in the cushion? (2) Qhy so you cover the foam with dacron? I am going to recover and replace the foam for some cushions. Once I got the fabric off, they don't seem to have anything covering them except some plastic that didn't cover the whole foam piece. I can't quite figure out why that was there.

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary,
      Great question! Yes the we added the seam allowance to help fill out the cover, also the Dacron helps in that area as well. The plastic you are referring to might have been used to make the insert go into the cover easier, since bare foam is a terrible pain to get in a cover, since it provides immense friction.
      I hope this helps, if it did please share the video with others!

    Hi guys, I have watched several of your videos. They are very informative. Just bought a new couch and after testing it in the store and making sure it felt comfortable, I sadly discovered at home that it gives me a lower back ache when sitting on it for more than 15 minutes. I checked the foam cushions and they have 2040 stamped on them. Which one is the density number, the 20 or the 40? I am thinking of replacing with a better foam. Our old couch actually had innerspring cushions. The back of the couch is constructed of 4 big throw pillows that are so densely stuffed that they make my shoulder blades hurt.

      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Angelika,
      Thank you so much for checking out our videos! Great question, it’s hard to say if those numbers actually represent the density or the compression. Since each manufacturer chooses to list or not list the compression or density. And if they do list it it’s using their own terminologies. Right now my question would be how do you describe your seat cushions are they too firm or too soft? Knowing this will best help me to direct you to the right compression

    @ucsolutions Super video thank you, trying to apply it in France! What density (kg / m3) and hardness (kPa) would you recommend for a 30-cm thick foam for couch back cushion? And is it fine to glue together multiple thinner foams if you can't find the thickness you need, eg. glue 3 layers, 10cm thick each, to get a combined thickness of 30 cm? Details: We have an angled couch with an oversized seat (like 90 cm seat depth) and no back cushions (only some pillows) so I'm trying to make some very thick back cushions for it. There would be one cushion of 195cm x 60cm for the long side of the couch and another one of 165cm x 60cm for the shorter side. Both would be 36 cm thick in the end (3 foams of 10cm glued to each others plus dacron wrapping on both sides (2 x 3 cm). The foam types I've found on amazon.fr that provide such large sizes are only 3 types: 18 kg/m3 density with 2.8 kPa hardness, 25 kg / m3 density with 4.4 kPa hardness and 35 kg/m3 density with 4.3 kPa hardness. I find it hard to choose (I'd think 4.3-4.4 kPa is too hard, 2.8 kPa would be better feeling for the back but then 18 kg/m3 sounds like too low density (the 1.8 pounds/ft3 that you recommend in your video would equal with 28 kg/m3). I've never done anything like this but your video got me into the mood. Your feedback would be very much appreciated!

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, thank you for watching the video I can try my best to help you with the situation. 30 cm seems to be near 12 inches. It’s very thick so I would go with a soft compression. Density it’s about quality so back cushions don’t need to be that dense, you could do a 1.8 density and it still last for many many years. Seat cushions take most of the brunt. So high density Is recommended for seat cushions. I think your seat cushion is pretty thick the general rule is the thicker the foam the soft or you can go with. The Dacron just gives a nice feel no support at all it has some other advantages as well that you’ll benefit from. Like not wearing the fabric out or breaking down the foam as fast.Yes you can glue several layers on to make the size thickness you need length or even depth. Following the directions in the video should make the cover fill out nicely meaning 1 inch all the way around. I hope this has helped you with your project and again thank you for watching. Cheers, Paul

    Would using this strategy on a knife-edge cushion completely ruin it? or could you just add more batting to the sides to add some roundness to it?

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Alison,
      Thanks for commenting! Great question, adding foam inserts in a Knife-Edge back cushion won't ruin it. Though it would be more difficult to do than a boxed cushion. To minimize the boxy effect of the insert on the Knife-Edge cushion cover you should probably trim the edges off the top of the insert and wrap dacron over it. This will smooth out the top and make it rounded. Hopefully, this helps! If you need foam you can get it at ucprivatecourses.com and if you have any questions you can comment here or on the live chat at ucprivatecourses.com.

My sofa is just under 4 years old now, I don’t feel like I should have to be doing all this already, it’s Bernhardt so I thought I was getting decent quality, the bottom cushions have feathers and they come out through the cover, is that normal for feathers? Never had them in a sofa before.

      Hi Elizabeth,
      Really appreciate you watching our videos! Yes unfortunately it can be really easy to overfill back cushions. Especially since poly fill has no set shape like foam, it will just as quickly fill out as it will push up. If your cushions are boxed though you would be a good candidate for foam inserts. As far as the feathers coming out of your seat cushion, that is common however it is not correct. This is a sign of inferior ticking (or inner cover) that holds the feathers, it’s a problem that many people live with though. It should not get substantially worse than it is already.
      I hope this helps!
      If you need any foam or tools check out our store here:
      ucprivatecourses.com
      P.S. I haven’t worked with Bernhardt furniture enough to tell you if it is good quality or not.
      All the best,
      Grant

    Did you ever do a video explaining how to do something similar for a knife's edge cushion. I would prefer to move away from poly fill in my cushion.

      Hey there Cooper,
      No we haven’t done a knife edge back cushion video yet. But you can fill a back cushion with shredded poly foam. Go to UCprivatecourses.com We just started selling it. You can fill a back cushion with shredded foam it’s superior to poly fill check it out. Thanks for watching please share. Cheers, Paul

    I have a back cushion that a) has no insert (just clumping polyfi) and no zipper! It's square and has a half T. I removed all of the polysilicon and am washing the cover. I don't sew very well and I don't have a sewing machine. How do I refill this?

      Hi The Menendi,
      Thanks for watching our videos! Great question, you have one of two options. One, is to wrap the existing poly fill in a layer of Dacron and add this back to the cushion cover. The layer of Dacron will help cut the lumpiness of the poly fill. The second option is to replace the poly fill with shredded foam using the same method with the Dacron wrap
      Here are two videos that show the process I’m talking about a little bit more in depth.
      I hope this helps! Thanks again for watching our video!

    Is there any way to do a foam filler if the cushions are attached to the back of the sofa with a zipper at the bottom? I just purchased a La-Z Boy sofa 6 months ago and the back cushions are already so baggy. So Disappointed and need help!

    • @ucsolutionsgivingmore
      @ucsolutionsgivingmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ariel,
      Yes, you would need a scrap piece of fabric to trace the existing cushions. This will be your template to cut the foam (you would cut a 1/2" outside of you template to get the desired fullness). Or you could measure seam to seam following the measuring chart that we have here: ucprivatecourses.com/product/sofa-seat-cushions-foam-inserts/.
      If you need foam please make sure to order 18 density 20 compression since anything more will be too stiff.
      I hope this helps!
      All the Best,
      Grant

    Great video, thank you. I have poly filled back cushions that I am tired of fixing. So I understand it correctly, you used 1.8 (or. 18) density with 20 compression for this particular cushion? Thank you very much from St Pete Florida. Stay safe.

      Hi Mary,
      Thank you so much for watching our videos! And I totally understand, I would be tried of continually adding poly fill to my back cushions as well. Yes, you are correct you would need to use a 18 density 20 compression foam for your back cushions. Or you could use our shredded foam back cushion fill which is the same cost and easier to work with.
