Came back to watch this after a few years, and boy I feel the tears coming. I've been listening to The Flashbulb for the last ten years or so, I feel like a have a deep relationship with his music, and I feel like I can't really share this feeling with others, because I usually listen to this when I'm alone using headphones or travelling somewhere, it's a very personal thing. I would like others to feel what I feel when I listen to this.
everytime i hear virtuous cassettes, i say to myself that i could die in the instant, i wouldnt care... music can transport emotions and thus, take you up to a very strong state of mind. This song put me in an atmosphere of quietness and absolute peace, in which i just forget to eat, drink, smoke, live. for some people, music is just something that you put on in the background, like in your car or something like that...To me, it's everything...and benn is like a soul "music" mate keep it up benn
That's the guy who makes the music I love.. He's the one who created the masterpiece, the most beautiful song I've heard, my favourite song of all time.. Going Brown Again
@108599814152682951064 its more sad that boc has like maybe 8 songs that are amazing but flashbulb has over 100 that I'd classify as amazing, even if the music is similar, the talent is world's apart. Flashbulb has composition, Boc is mostly free-form experimentation without any real cohesive melodic form, like grasping at straws looking for something that works. Benn actually has a lot more cohesion. Just because it sounds similar doesn't even mean they are same genre, flashbulb is a lot of drill/base/idm but Boc is purely experimental, if you said Boc was a lot like Kid Spatula then I'd have been like o hell yea before he went solo. But Boc is nothing like Flashbulb, only group I've seen come close to Flashbulb was Cex and even they aren't nearly as capable or talented as Benn. Chicago is a whirlwind of influences and Benn is a product of his unique environment, its great he keeps producing music, while your Boc has laughably not produced anything of even meager interest in the last 5 years. Have you even heard 50% of what Benn has produced? He has over 10 albums of songs and countless unfinished sample tapes. Its been reputed that he has several unreleased albums that have yet to see the light of day. Soundtrack to a Vacant Life was one of the best albums I've ever heard in my life and nothing Boc has made can even touch an album with 95% songs being amazing on it, not even Smashing Pumpkins: Melon Collie and infinite sadness could topple its amazing composition. Most musicians get 1-3 decent songs per album, Benn produced an album of almost exclusively "higher" quality music. Not just 1 or 2 hit wonders with a whole album of garbage behind it.
Stephen Church I honestly love Tycho and went to his Live some months ago. I also really love BoC. But I love The Flashbulb as well. The quality is high in both three and each one has a different way of making music. Tycho is really, really more commercial if you compare to The Flashbulb. It's not bad. But for sure is more "easy" and accessible. And you don't head any IDMish drum in any of his songs. Neither in BoC as far as I recall. The Flashbulb production is (also) a lot about drums, IDM, and unique style. And the quality is there; cannot believe you don't see (hear) it. If you refer to the audio quality and the "perfection" of the synth, well, yes, BoC and Tycho maybe sperimented more. But also take in account that Benn Jordan (The Flashbulb) doesn't have so much money, and always tried to express at best his creativity just with the limited tools and instruments he has (go compare instead to how much money and "tools" BoC and Tycho have). I don really want to make BoC/Tycho look like bad. But, really, you are missing something if you blame The Flashbulb to be "a copy". Without mentioning that The Flashbulb produces music since years before Tycho early works...... I cannot really see how the fist is a copy of the second.
lol "just another BOC clone"... are we listening to the same thing? i mean, either you just listened to 4 songs of the flashbulb (and then you have 0 credibility, coz each of his albums is just unique and you just don't know what you're talking about) or you're just simply bad at recognizing and understanding music. Do you play any instrument? And Tycho? come on, listen to stuff very carefuly, get your own opinion and then come back coz right now you're just making a fool of yourself, it's like saying Texas is a clone of Nirvana (sounds retarded right?)
Hi, the first song I think that is "Sunset Hamlin" or "An External Frost", both from the album "Red Extensions of Me". The second song is "Virtuous Cassette" from "Love as a Dark Hallway".
He really knows how to make the best out of guitars, and I am NOT a big fan of those power guitars or rock in general, but this is something else. Funny how amazing guitars and trance sounds together, and Solarstone with Seven Cities is a very good reference to that and also one of the very early ones. I like this :)
dude was playing in jazz bands at paying gigs as a guitarist at like 13 or some shit. hes absolutely a monster musician and not only that but he is just like a sound fetishist, its weeird. hes totally obsessed with sound and making new sounds and altering other ones so he just has this huge huge library of creations to work with.
I've wondered for years what that guitar sound at the beginning of the video is. Is it the ring mod? because I never quite figured out how to use those in a musical way.
Thanks for sharing the clip! But, please settle down with the cuts and whacky editing. One of the reasons i watch a live clip is so i can see what they're doing. I'd appreciate it if you keep the screen still, and on the musician.
sounds like a softer more pop version (classic harmony) of squarepusher, more accessible and stable (the rhythm). This is merely an observation not a value judgement.
how can the flahbulb be disillusioned with the music industry? squarepusher gave him a fucking career.... i mean comeon while it's still kind of cool to an extent that somebody was able to pick up a guitar and do an arguably-brilliant-at-times squarepusher impression, it rings hollow when you talk to the guy and find out that he sees himself as better than both aphex twin and squarepusher. how the fuck is he disillusioned with the industry? he makes bumpers for spike tv and shit. he's a self-made-millionaire! just ask him. if he had a soul he'd pretty easily be the greatest electronic musician in america
james schaefer dude he fkin is better then both of them, he fkin smokes them like a they are a joke, I've listened to all 3(when I say listened, I have the collective works of all their albums even the shet on the underground scene), same thing happen with Mike Paradinas they both outgrew the people that gave them a start. What do they fkin owe them something for being successful where they aren't at the moment? Maybe they should work harder.
james schaefer I understand the doubt and the need to criticize always. But, believe me, Benn is continuosly trying to get enough money to pay the rent and some new instrument. He denied a lot in the music industry, and that's why he's not making so much money (even if is getting some money from our streaming on Spotify). And that's also why is still so genuine and fan-connected after 15 years. Take a look at his blog: www.bennjordan.com/ , it really worths it to understand the value of his music. And btw, never read him claiming to be better to anyone. He's usually very humble.
Except Jimmy didn't play with the strings upside down. He just played a right handed guitar with the strings made for a left handed player. So essentially a left handed guitar. Jimmy was great for his time but............

His youtube channel @bennjordan is great too
playing a right-handed guitar left-handed adds to his awesomeness
You know, he doesn't smile, but I don't think I've ever seen someone so happy.
I used to drink coffee with this dude all night at a diner. neat dude, keep the music up benn and say no to giant donuts.
This is absolutely astonishing. Unique and innovative. I would pay to see this man live. Such a great musician.

3:40 playing a guitar, mixing and drinking beer at the same moment! this guy has all my respect!
Could you put a few more cuts in the video? I could almost see Benn in this one.
the intention is cute, but yeah that's annoying
I lol'd at 0:51
Reaal Intelligent Music .... in so many ways !! Woow love it
Benn Jordan is awesome, I love this guys music! Please keep it up. Thanks
Ive listening to the flashbulb for many many many years now, this is my first time seeing a live preformance. fuckin amazing
Holy smokes -- I knew you as an electronic musician; I didn't know what an amazing guitarist you are!
Das Benn ein toller Musiker ist war mir immer klar, aber sein Gitarrenspiel lässt mich einfach nur staunen. Total bliss!
How have I not seen this?!!! You ripped that solo!
That's the guy who makes the music I love.. He's the one who created the masterpiece, the most beautiful song I've heard, my favourite song of all time.. Going Brown Again
Saw him in April, sooo amazing
intimate and fantastic show
Its sad that so few people can appreciate this music.
It's more sad that less people realize that he is just another BOC clone in the same vein as Tycho's early work.
@108599814152682951064 its more sad that boc has like maybe 8 songs that are amazing but flashbulb has over 100 that I'd classify as amazing, even if the music is similar, the talent is world's apart. @@Beberrre it's like saying Oasis is better than Verve Because of commercial success vs subjective standards of taste.
He's pretty much the only artist that I am dying to see live.
Guys, the first song is the outro of the live version of "Kirlian Choice".
Awesome.......any words
The Flashbulb, a very experimental sound artist !!
Sin dud mi artista favoritto.....el mejor....simplemente su musica me encanta...I love IDM.....Electronic rules...Magnifico....amen
bloomin' brilliant!
Thank you, Benn.
Awesome
Best Live performance of ALL time
well it's released now!
There should be 15 million views of this and counting . . .
wow......................................................................
excellent :) Benn Jordan is the man.
Strong Squarepusher vibes
Yep, I'm a fan of Benn.
Sensational, he can be a bit to much for me when doing his hardtechcore thing, but this side of him just blows me away.
Hi, the first song I think that is "Sunset Hamlin" or "An External Frost", both from the album "Red Extensions of Me". The second song is "Virtuous Cassette" from "Love as a Dark Hallway".
So fuckin good.
Awesome! :D
I think I got something in my eyes.
FUCKING AMAZING
now thats what I call talent
Benn is pure genius.
He really knows how to make the best out of guitars, and I am NOT a big fan of those power guitars or rock in general, but this is something else.
Funny how amazing guitars and trance sounds together, and Solarstone with Seven Cities is a very good reference to that and also one of the very early ones.

This is drum and bass not trance! Check out Raise Spirit for more guitar+dance stuff

3:40 Best moment!
wonder if we'll hear that first tune on his new album
I have always thought the same thing about this song..
2:40 magic
i love all his music, but even if you dont like it, you HAVE to give him respect for being able to pull all this off alone...
brutal, FLASHBULB!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've wondered for years what that guitar sound at the beginning of the video is. Is it the ring mod? because I never quite figured out how to use those in a musical way.
@BAMMTV No, The second song was "Virtuous Cassette".
Damn, Benn got real swole since I last saw him. I know he's been dealing with a lot of personal stuff, but he still looks and sounds like Oxygenfad
he's an mma fighter. every time i see him he's either + or - 40lbs
Why is the full show on upstream private now? :(
who else wants some baby back electronic after watching the intro?
@infesticon
Given this video, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them!
What? What effects is he using? I need to get my hands on that!
openly pay your dues to warp records, rephlex. much respect to you, sir, and please reflect it. if this was 15 years ago it'd be different.....
only 500+ views?!?! ... This saddens me :(
fukin epic solo *.*
He is a GOD!
wdym it was 12 years ago?!
The actual song starts at 2:15
Thanks for sharing the clip! But, please settle down with the cuts and whacky editing. One of the reasons i watch a live clip is so i can see what they're doing. I'd appreciate it if you keep the screen still, and on the musician.
seriously
DAT TONE.
No, but seriously. HOW?
is there any reason why hes playing his guitar the wrong way around?
sounds like a softer more pop version (classic harmony) of squarepusher, more accessible and stable (the rhythm). This is merely an observation not a value judgement.
mpfmax0 dig into more of Benns discog my friend because he does it all
aphex twin, squarepusher, .. tom jenkinson, richard d james. drukqs. he really does it all !
2:16 sounds like BoC ^^ Olson!
I never knew he played a right handed guitar backwards like Hendrix.
He be left handed dawg and learned to play a right like dat! D:
Gaster theme found
sheeeesh hes hot
Drum and Bass IDM....
Squarepusher esque
the flashbulb kinda looks like a lumberjack
Hendrix style... :)
No, the second one was "virtuous cassette".
I wonder how Benn uses an Acoustic guitar. This one is upside down. Awkward but drop dead awesome.
how can the flahbulb be disillusioned with the music industry? squarepusher gave him a fucking career.... i mean comeon while it's still kind of cool to an extent that somebody was able to pick up a guitar and do an arguably-brilliant-at-times squarepusher impression, it rings hollow when you talk to the guy and find out that he sees himself as better than both aphex twin and squarepusher. how the fuck is he disillusioned with the industry? he makes bumpers for spike tv and shit. he's a self-made-millionaire! just ask him. if he had a soul he'd pretty easily be the greatest electronic musician in america
I don't think a man with no soul can make such music
And he doesn't look self-made millionaire at all
james schaefer dude he fkin is better then both of them, he fkin smokes them like a they are a joke, I've listened to all 3(when I say listened, I have the collective works of all their albums even the shet on the underground scene), same thing happen with Mike Paradinas they both outgrew the people that gave them a start. This guy seems halfway between fennesz and squarepusher
aphex to wisp
Benn, why's this shit shot like a kid's show?
Except Jimmy didn't play with the strings upside down. He just played a right handed guitar with the strings made for a left handed player. So essentially a left handed guitar. Jimmy was great for his time but............
APHEX TWIN
SQUAREPUSHER*
THE FLASHBULB*
Wrong. "Virtuous Cassette"
But wow, he left the strings the wrong way around... does your friend do that as well?
Terrible camerawork.
sounds like a homosexual version of wisp
Nice try to destroy a guitar's sound.
