    Feb. 12, 2020 | Lars Gotrich -- Phil Elverum's songs come full circle, swooping down like vultures and floating up like ashes from flames. Throughout his work in Mount Eerie and The Microphones, idealism comes up against realism, existence entangles with impermanence and love discovers new forms. So when he sings, "Let's get out the romance," in close harmony with Julie Doiron at the Tiny Desk, there's a history going back nearly two decades to an isolated cabin in Norway where he first wrote the phrase.
    Lost Wisdom Pt. 2, released last year, is more than a continuation of a beloved collaboration; the sparsely decorated, deeply felt album meditates on a heart still breaking and mutating, but also gently reckons with a younger version of himself. That refrain on "Belief" - performed here with only an electric guitar and a nylon-string acoustic bought in Stockholm during that Scandinavian trip many years ago - not only references the cathartic singalong but also "Flaming Home" from 2008's Lost Wisdom.
    Elverum remembers himself as a young man who begged "the sky for some calamity to challenge my foundation." We then become the Greek chorus, witness to the unfolding tragedy: first, the death of his wife and mother to their child, the musician and illustrator Geneviève Castrée, in 2016; then the marriage to actor Michelle Williams in 2018 and their divorce less than a year later. "'The world always goes on,'" Doiron sings in answer, quoting a Joanne Kyger poem, "'Breaking us with its changes / Until our form, exhausted, runs true.'"
    When "Belief" suddenly ends, seemingly in the middle of a thought, Elverum's eyes search the room. The audience responds with applause, but a version of this dynamic plays out everywhere he's performed for the last three years - long silences broken up by tentative claps, nervous laughs struck by grief and absurdity. The albums A Crow Looked At Me, Now Only and Lost Wisdom Pt. 2 engage Elverum and his fans in open wounds he chooses to share - death, love and the loss of love - and that we choose to listen to. Written with diaristic detail, but in awe of an endless horizon, Elverum's existentialism is exhausted, but seeking.
    He smiles, says thanks, sighs and then sings once again.

      grizz22604 imo, his blunt honesty and how open and personal his music is , that’s what makes him one of the greats. It’s hard to be vulnerable to people and to make that vulnerability sound good that’s also special

    • @HumansFreshlyBorn
      @HumansFreshlyBorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      grizz22604 Go listen to his discography with “The Microphones”, specifically “The Glow Pt. 2”, and “Mount Eerie”. It’s generally understood to be his high point and it gives context to stuff like this. His music has this unique sadness that only he seems to be able to capture, and it’s extremely open and personal, and amazingly well produced, at that.

    • @carlrdbro1230
      @carlrdbro1230 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@grizz22604 If I should chip in my 2 cents, I'd also add that his songwriting is very strong. The lyrics are one thing. Another equally as important thing is how you present your lyrics. Phil Elverum writes incredibly fluent and beautiful vocal lines that flow very elegantly over the chords often through multiple measures at a time. It's a very unique way of writing vocal lines - it almost feels like it's poems with music written around it to perfectly suit the meaning and vibe of the stories. And then the harmonies that he sings with Julie are very pretty, but they're also complex. It's not just your standard choral voicings that you'd typically hear in choral pieces, nor is it something boring like just adding a 3rd to every note. It feels like 2 separate vocal lines that just happen to also sound great together over the chords. Also the way he structures his songs are unusual, often with either very short, linear pieces, or longer meandering ones. But there are rarely choruses as such.

    I saw Phil, Julie, and Phil's late wife Geneviève Castrée perform a very small intimate show in Lubbock, Texas around 2004-05. Each performer played by themselves, but all using the same guitar. Phil made a joke about imagining that the venue they were playing was one of the same places that Lubbock native, Buddy Holly played. I didn't know at the time that Phil and Geneviève were married. My friend and I talked to Julie afterwards and she was one of the sweetest and most gracious people I've ever met. It was years later that I read about Geneviève's and Phil's marriage and her passing shortly after their daughter was born. I was happy to read about his marriage to Michelle Williams, but didn't know that they had divorced until watching this video and reading the comments. I hope Phil and his daughter are doing well and are happy. He is an amazing songwriter and artist, as is Julie. Michelle is a great actress is well, I just assume they weren't compatible.

      I was at that show too! I remember talking to Phil and Julie after the show and they were both so sweet and genuine, but I couldn't remember if Genevieve was there as well. So, you've just cleared that up for me! The experience was one I'll never forget, being so small and intimate. I've been to hundreds of shows since then and none of them were quite like it. I had just bought The Glow Pt. 2 and was listening to it constantly and so immersed in what he was doing. He seems to be doing well now, and I hope he will continue making music for a long time.

      @@indieguy81 You were at the Tokyo Joe's show in Lubbock?! That's awesome! Did you see many other shows in Lubbock during that time? Jake's Backroom had a lot of great ones around the same time period - Lucero, Mate of State, Magnolia Electric Co., Troubled Hubble, David Bazan. I saw The Mountain Goats at a weird little place downtown called Space 1110 (eleven ten), and saw John Vanderslice at The Winchester Slaughterhouse, which is part of the area where they do the Nightmare on 19th Street haunted house. The Mount Eerie/Julie Doiron show was actually at the second location of Tokyo Joe's near the depot. The original location was at 42nd and Boston where the Lubbock Community Theater is now located. Back then at the original location, I saw The Jealous Sound and The Rocket Summer on different occasions. Wish Lubbock still had some cool venues like these.

Thank you NPR for great shows as always, and thank you Mount Eerie for playing!
