Aurora is pure talent. Heathens is one of her best songs. Her voice, her poetry of lyrics, which makes me listen to her songs over and over, and her way of performing, how she conects with her music, performing, makes her present in some way like an out of this world human, like an angel, not touchable, if u get it. Its like heaven on earth listening to this amazing song. Love👍😃

Adam. Yet another heartfelt reaction to Aurora "Heathens". This wonderful young artist deserves so much more recognition for her great work over the years. I know she will continue to reach out and touch many hearts with the spirit she just sends out. She surely has touched my heart that's for sure. I hope you get to see her in concert next year. It'll be a great experience. This live performance is a great reflection of her artistic and production skills. Thanks.

There aren't even words to describe the way she gestures the way she presents herself it really looks like she becomes the music it's all a set. It is a privilege to be living in the same era as this musician.
I'm glad in a way that she's not SUPER FAMOUS because media pressure could try to mold her personality and that can't happen!
    My favorite artist by far.

Keeping in mind that all of the songs on the upcoming album are referencing the ancient Greek Gods, I would assume that this song refers to the Greek Goddess Gaia who gave birth to the world as well as the other Gods. All things return to her - ashes to ashes, dust to dust. Gaia is also often depicted wearing green which is Aurora's favorite color. And thx for another great reaction!!

Made me cry. So wonderously beautyful. How can one feel good by feeling sad at the same time? The lyrics is mysterious and the dance coreography is like soundwaves with a meaning. Ethereal is a good description.

Right?! As she unfolds this album song by song, I realize that there is so much more to come. I really look forward to the Jan. 25th performance. Just an astonishing level of talent, spiritual acuity and just plain awesomeness. Yes - you mentioned simplicity. That's a key, I think. She takes the very complex and tangled web we humans weave and gently, yet quite firmly untangles and shows the way out of the web. ♥
You found the secret lyric! She does not sing the part about needing free will.

You are perhaps the most analytic reactor on YT to Aurora's music! Now. 3:46 and 11:15 (your video): You said it all! I love this live performance. And also the visualizer. And naturally I love the song! It is at the same time chilling and somehow dark but uplifting on the other hand. The somewhat austere i.e. stripped down setting in the performance adds to the chill factor. This song is a key piece in the puzzle that will be the album, I think. As a non native English speaker my word choices may seem odd, but then again I am odd myself. Thank you a thick bunch!

@@AdamStraughan Aurora was on a live stream interview on Instagram on Dec 5th (link below 59min) where she explained a little bit about the meaning of Heathens, though the lyrics has a very specific personal meaning for her, that she does not want to reveal in details, since she wants us to find our own meanings.
She also said the rest of the album sounds more like "Heathens" than "Cure For Me" and "Giving In To The Love":
      youtu . be/WO1QTzF1uUc&t=266
"I think 'Heathens ' is something people call you, when you don't follow...ehm...when you don't act like people expect you to behave, and I'm very inspired by, especially the women who have fought for women like us today. Cause I know if we lived 400 years ago, we would definitely have been burned on the fire. I'm happy that I'm living now. Though I feel like I might have been burned in a previous life...ehm...cause I...yeah it makes sense.
But yeah I was just very inspired by all these people that aren't accepted by these small communities in the world, and by religion too, who try their best but they don't fit in, because they are more human than the world or a religon sometimes allows you to be, or like a strict household, it's very hard. So I just wanted to make this liberating song about the beauty in just being imperfect and human.
To me the song has a very specific meaning, but I'm trying to not be too specific. I want all of you to find your own meaning, that is why I'm just saying like general things. But for me it has a really, a really clear meaning behind it. But I don't want to tell too much, cause I want you all to find your own meaning.
But it's one of my favorite from this album or my favorite single, and it represents a lot I think, or it is very intune with how the rest of the album sounds. More than "Cure For Me" or "Giving In To The Love"."
      From a TripleJ interview:
"A long, long time ago, Eve took a bite of a forbidden apple hanging from the tree of evil and good. [...] In her act of doing so, she granted humans free will; I just think that is very beautiful, and I wanted to honour her and women like her, who little by little granted us freedom in this world. A freedom to live as we please, to explore and taste. I think life should be lived in all of its colours, and that is why we live like heathens."

Aurora does not agree with established mainstream religious belief systems which, most simply put, propagate the notion that we must repent. She feels that such institutions are unfairly judging people.
So furthermore, as far as the title goes, what Aurora is seemingly asserting is that the pressure to adhere to such a level of discipline and morality, as required by mainstream religious bodies, is rather what’s causing people to spaz or “live like heathens”.
And secondly, with that in mind, she is offering us something like a religious alternative. And that would be, instead of following such belief systems like Christianity , all religions really, to rather worship the aforementioned female entity. In other words, said being does not require any type of extraordinary self-control or virtue from its believers. Instead, as presented in the bridge, “if you give your heart to her”, then “her love is [also] yours” in return.

    • @alnatex
      @alnatex 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yes. Also another interpretation along those lines that just came to me is the rejection of the (christian) concept of the original sin. And in this story we are kind of in the place of eve who stole from the tree of eden to gain the knowledge of good and evil which is seen as a sin making her/us a heathen and embracing that gives us the freedom to stop this cultur of shame and having to repent for our sins. For being guided by our lust which in the christian context is seen as bad and sinful I think this fits also with the falling from heaven line cause angles fall for sinning/questioning God. But in this song I don't get the feeling that there is any negative connotation. It's just a statement: we are guided by what we desire (like knowledge and freedom). And there is nothing wrong with having desires. I mean the song even starts with the desires of this motherly figure which I think with her stron environmental background can be understood as mother earth even. All in all it feels to me kind of like a reclaiming of being a heathen, having desires (not greed) is natural and there is this give and take relationship with Mother Earth. She provides for us, so we can live and follow our desires and in return we give our heart to her.
I don't think this is the only meaning of this song, I am pretty sure there are also themes from greek mythology at play here and this is just what this could mean from a Christian standpoint.

To my mind, and to my interpretation of what she says about the song, we live like heathens and that is NOT necessarily a bad thing - that "evil" is an interpretation She refers to Eve as a being brave, granting us free will, vs the "unforgiving promise" of many religions. Granting us "A freedom to live as we please, to explore and taste. I think life should be lived in all of its colors, and that is why we live like heathens."
The mother without a heart seems to be Mother Earth.
"We fell from sky with grace
And landed in her soft and warm embrace
She gave her love, her gift of life
So we could live with her"

    the part
"If I believe in you, the light you give
    But I need free will
    The part of life
    You can’t forgive"
Is never sung... but it gives more context for sure!
Like im pretty sure the "mother" is mother earth (and the mother ship), she "taking what she deserves" meaning that eveything will eventually die.
But "you" seems to be God, the christian god that is. And critical to say the least! "We cry for those You burned beneath the flame"
