Selective Cornea Transplant - Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK, DSEK)

The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped surface of the eye where light enters. It is a large part of the eye's ability to see clearly. Unfortunately for some patients, the inner lining of the cornea may become cloudy leading to vision loss, most often from Fuch’s Dystrophy or Bullous Keratopathy. Treatment is often pursued before the cornea becomes completely clouded. As such, treatment to restore vision requires a highly selective cornea transplant involving removal and replacement of just the diseased inner lining of the cornea with a donor graft, either DSEK (Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty) or DMEK (Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty). The main difference between DSEK and DMEK is the thickness of the inner lining removed and graft that is transplanted... 70-120 microns (DSEK) vs 5-10 microns (DMEK).
