In this video, I go through the anatomy of the cornea, types of cornea transplants, and the most common indications like cornea scars, Fuchs Corneal Dystrophy, and Keratoconus. I also include some clips of my own surgeries throughout the video!

    Thanks for the video!!! I suffered from keratoconus in both eyes and had my first total transplant in 1989 and my second eye done in 1991. In 2022 I had my left eye redone and on October 18, 2023 (6 months today) my right eye redone. I am so fortunate to have had this take place so I am able to see. Thank you to all the wonderful eye surgeons out there and all the DONORS who have given us sight. If I get 30 plus years out of the new corneas like I have with the first ones I will be 102 years young.

    I was diagnosed with Fuch's dystrophy in my early 50s. I'm 77 now and I received DSAEK in one eye about 4 years ago, and DMEK in the other eye about 3 years ago. I still wear glasses, although I can pass my driving test without glasses. But the best outcome was the elimination of glare around bright objects. I was unable to read signs at night if they were close to a stoplight, for example. The other wonderful outcome was the improvement of color. Before colors appeared washed out--as if looking through wax paper. I use eye drops daily to ward of rejection and, so far, there's no sign of that. And my eye doctor doubts if that will ever become a problem having made it this far. I cannot over-recommend this virtually painless out-patient surgery for anyone who has Fuch's.

      I was just diagnosed with Fuch’s and I just turned 44. It’s at the really early stages so no symptoms yet, but I’m worried. How long did it take for yours to develop problems after you were diagnosed?

    • @kenhaley4
      @kenhaley4 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ruck-a-tron That's hard to say, because it was a very slow process. But I would say it was 5-10 years before I really started noticing anything. Back then, DSAEK and DMEK weren't options, so I'm glad I waited until they were. The full cornea transplant is much more invasive and takes longer to recover.
      Do what your doctor recommends though. DMEK isn't at all painful, recovery isn't really a big deal, and the success rate is very high. If it were me, I wouldn't wait, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

    • @ruck-a-tron
      @ruck-a-tron 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kenhaley4 Thanks for the information. I don't have any issues yet, but I'll keep getting it checked out. I'll look into DMEK and DSAEK.

    What happens if you had a corneal transplant and not all the damaged cornea is replaced. For example you had a damage cornea 11.7mm (the etire cornea) and only 5mm of that cornea is replaced by a healthy dorors cornea, would the remaining damged cornea destroy the donors cornea?

    Is there much pain involved in getting a full depth transplant? I have keratoconus in both eyes, my right eye was saved by UV cross linking, but my left is too far gone for that to be of any use, leaving me with just a transplant to regain vision there. ( I still have good periphial vision, and I can actually see if i put things 1 inch away from my left eye kinda weird but thats where the focus is now). I work with someone who had it done maybe 15 years ago and he said he had to get 2 needles in his eye and it was the most painful thing hes ever experienced even beating out dropping boiling water on his foot and skin sloughing off... has this surgery changed much since then? the fear of the surgery is what keeps me from doing it (of the pain). I would like to see in 3D again instead of living this non-depth perceptional life I currently lead. (I have yet to try scaleral lenses, do you think that might work?)

    Hi doctor, I'm a 37 year old individual ( female ) whose in need of a cornea transplant. To give you a little bit of history about myself -
    .... I had a forceps injury at birth, I also found out recently that I had a prolonged delivery into this world - anyway, through-out my entire life, my vision wasn't the best - had lots of blurred images seen, cloudiness and double vision., i also have karrattuccunnus in both eyes, and is generally slow - have lots of medical illnesses also ( diabetes, high blood pressure and I do fell alot ). Ma'am, I also developed an infection in the right eye due to influenza virus, polyps, edema and an ulcer - I'm currently seeking treatment for the following - ... and though I'm trying to strong for the upcoming operation next year ( 2023 ) - I can't help but be scared, nervous, and terrified about it.
    ... so if you may, can you kindly provide details, and a full explanation of what patients have to undergo with the above mentioned problems like mine?.
    Thanks for your reply. Blessings.

      Than you for sharing. It is really difficult to know whether you should get a transplant without examining your eyes (especially if there are other medical issues that pose a risk). I highly recommend you discuss your concerns with your surgeon and your doctors to make sure you understand your specific risk factors. Best of luck - I hope everything goes smoothlly! ❤

      Thanks a lot for your well wishes towards the transplant., they did mention I needed the surgery, I had this problem since a child going school ( 10 yrs old ), I'm 37 now. I wanted to know - what the surgery would be like for me, because I'm stressing out over this - can't even have a good Christmas. Anyway, I also had a recent infection ( virus ) - ... and two weeks later, my right eye started to exhibit symptoms - I'm currently in clinic screening for my eyes - and was told the Descemet's membrane had ruptured 😭, also had polyps, edema and ulcer. I'm researching to see what surgery would be like, but there's no article available- cause I'm currently stressing.
      What's the recovery period and life after transplant like?
      Thanks for the above reply.

    At what stage is a cornea transplant required. My right eye is non existent without lenses.

    • @MicheleLeeMD
      @MicheleLeeMD  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It depends on what is going on with your eye. If your issue is mostly corneal and your doctor thinks that there is a decent probability of success with a cornea transplant, that might be an option. Most of the time there are other issues going on in which case it may not be worth it. I would recommend you discuss this with your eye doctor!

    I'm 1 month out from a full cornea transplant with 16 stitches, by the most horrible people ever THE VA. Not one good day yet, vision is about as bad as it was with glasses, but not being able to do nothing, and instructions from doctors that have me confused, i have gained 5 pounds after i spent last year loosing 54 lbs, don't know what i can do, mostly been told drops don't lift over 10 lbs, yeah well i have to dogs, and a disabled wife on 1 acre of grass and weeds that sits. I WOULD HAVE REMAINED BLIOND IF I KNEW ABOUT THIS CRAP. I haven't slept in a month. 55 yrs old and have not had a correctable eye since 2007 due to somewhere between puliced and kerotonis, who knows. My mood is shot, and that's bad, bipolar and high level PTSD, not going good, another month before my next doctor appt.
