  • Shaun of the Dead is an instant classic. Among Edgar Wright’s best work, this movie had me emotional, horrified but laughing the entire perfectly edited and directed 100 minutes. From the standout performance by Simon Pegg to the incredibly creative execution of the story through visual and auditory gags, I loved every second and I literally have nothing negative to say about this film at all. I only have one Edgar Wright film left to watch: Last Night in Soho. Please let me know if it’s worth the review on the channel.

Little side-note in the DVD extras; Diane actually *survived* her rampage against all odds. Her narration explains how she realised halfway through that she couldn't save David, and ended up taking refuge in a tree until it all blew over. She is now living elsewhere and in Christmas card contact with Shaun and Liz. :D

"[about Ed] He's not my boyfriend!"
"[handing beer to Shaun] It might be a bit warm, the cooler's off."
    "Thanks, babe. [winks at Ed]"
Fun Fact: George A. Romero, creator of the movies to which this movie pays homage and lampoons, was so impressed with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's work that he asked them to cameo in Land Of The Dead (2005) as zombies.
Spaced Background Fact: Many of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced (1999), which also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was also directed by Edgar Wright. They were recruited through the Spaced Out fan website. All of the newsreaders and television presenters are real people portraying themselves.
Multiverse Sequel Fact: Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright considered a sequel that would replace zombies with another monster, but decided against it, as they were pleased with this movie as a stand-alone product, and thought too many characters died to continue the story. The proposed title idea "From Dusk Till Shaun" did have an afterlife as a mocked up poster that can be seen in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018).

I consider both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz to be nearly perfect movies. While the story is simple - execution, writing, editing and performances are all 10/10.
It's just insane how much thought and care Wright and Pegg puts into their movies.

The whole premise for 'Shaun' was based on a single episode of the sitcom 'Spaced' created and co-written by Pegg and Jessica Hynes (Stevenson as she was) who cameos as Yvonne here. In it Peggs character hallucinates after he spent a night playing Resident Evil 2 on the PS1 whilst on bad speed. Most of the zombie extras here are from internet fan groups who agreed to appear simply because they wanted to see the film made and that helped keep the budget down so Wright could spend in other areas.

There is a scene that is a clear homage to George Romero's Day of the Dead.

When Shaun of the Dead came out, George Romero enjoyed it so much he invited Simon Pegg and Edgar Write to have a cameo in Land of the Dead. One of the fun things about Shaun as a horror fan is that it doesn't rely on references, but there are a ton of them throughout the movie that are deep cuts. I remember back in the day posting on a horror message board and we'd trade references we caught. This included some musical queues from Dawn of the Dead, well used dialogue from Night of the Living Dead, and a lot of really subtle references.

Yvonne lived the role of the protagonist, and it cost her dearly. But, despite being the protagonist, she wasn't the main character, so we didn't get to see that. It's bizarrely genius.

But always subconsciously think about how he uses all these non lethal items as weapons, but not one gun besides the one at the bar? How did he not come across a lot more guns?” And I just smoked a little weed, and entertained the thought longer, and high happens, and finally had the obvious realization that this is in the UK, which has far less guns than America. Not that no citizens do. But not like the US. Even the police don’t carry sidearms there. So of course it would feel odd for them to be English, shooting in England, yet have everyone be armed. I dunno. It was just an “oh, duh” moment I just had.

You should watch the following two movies:
    1. Generation War (2013)
    2. Live of the others (2006)

I agree. Edgar Wright has the ability to put every emotion into a movie. (Except bordom). Great reaction as always. I look forward to the next ❤x

Shaun gets it right about how this sort of thing would go down in the real world: the military would cut it down almost immediately. There'd be no apocalypse.

Editing gets even better in Hot Fuzz if that´s possible. Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead are amazing, The world´s End is great too, though it didn´t hit me that much as first two of the cornetto Trilogy.

The only thing wrong with this movie is that I can't see it for the first time ever again.
