Not only did Rodney do standup, this was his first non-standup project. He thought he was bombing because no one was laughing. The crew had to explain to him that there can't be laughing in the take.

Lots of people give Rodney Dangerfield the credit for the comedy. But my favorite was always Ted Knight. I thought he was great in this movie, as in everything else I've seen him in. His expressions throughout the film were fantastic.

I'm not overstating it, when I say "Masterpiece" is how I describe this movie.
Fun Fact: The famous scene that begins when Ty Webb's golf ball crashes into Carl Spackler's ramshackle house was not in the original script. It was added by director Harold Ramis after realizing that two of his biggest stars, Chevy Chase and Bill Murray (who did not get along due to a feud dating back to their days on Saturday Night Live (1975)), did not have a scene together. The three met for lunch and wrote the scene together. Although it has nothing to do with the plot, it is widely regarded as the funniest scene in the movie. This is the only time that Chase and Murray have appeared in the same scene together.

Stripes is DEFINITELY worth watching! As is "Back to School" which has Rodney Dangerfield. The man was a genius behind a microphone(stand up comedy(owned his own clubs) and on Interview shows).
About that Pool Scene... think of it this way: These uncultured, looked down upon employees(caddies), performed a synchronized water dance during the one time of the year they were actually allowed into the pool. The wealthy folks would never expect those pathetic swine to be able to do that.
The movie IS kinda "all over the place", so that's a valid criticism. But the comedy really does carry it, and that's what makes it the classic that it is. But that's the thing about comedies from that era.... they're not meant to be realistic, or taken seriously. At all. You just go along with them for the fun ride.

Bill Murray is perfection in Groundhog Day. And he gets to play off of a real groundhog in a few scenes.
Rodney Dangerfield was one of the best stand-up comedians of the 20th century. His method was all about him getting "no respect" from people, to his detriment.

The water dance sequence is a call back, admittedly random, to the movies of Esther Williams from the 50's, which always featured elaborate swimming sequences, due to Williams' early fame coming from being a competitive swimmer. They took a lot of inspiration, in turn, from the dance numbers choreographed by Busby Berkeley for films in the 30's. Amazing stuff to watch from both of them!

Yo, you got Cinema Rules on in the background! A cameo, an homage! :D Love those guys!/Brian Doyle Murray is Bill Murray's older brother (he preceded his little brother in Second City, in the early 70s)./ This movie was a hit, it was the next in a string of "Saturday Night Live"-affiliated movies (both Chevy Chase and Bill Murray were in the early seasons of SNL and were huge stars). It's not unlike "National Lampoon's Animal House" (1977), which Harold Ramis and Doug Kenney wrote, and John Landis directed (another great comedy about a crazy fraternity in the early 60s. You'll love it). /The scene with Murray and Chase together is a real highlight because Murray replaced Chase on Saturday Night Live, this is pretty much the only chance to see them riff together. It's a totally improvised scene./The fourth comedy genius in this movie is Ted Knight, who plays the owner of the club! He was known from The Mary Tyler Moore Show, and his performance is fantastic./Rodney Dangerfield was DEFINITELY a stand-up comic, and one of the BEST. After this movie, he made a HILARIOUS movie with Joe Pesci called "Easy Money".

The reason this is so disjointed is that it began as a story about the caddies, your basic coming-of-age story. The big comedy stars were intended as cameos. As the shoot went on, the big stars' scenes worked so well they just began writing more and more scenes for them and chopping out caddy scenes. Cohesive storytelling fell by the wayside. Oh also the entire cast and crew probably snorted several tons of cocaine during production. During the dinner scene you can actually see some of the background extras snorting in the background (including one of the writers, Doug Kenney).
I believe the gopher idea was dreamed up by one of the producers as a way of linking the different storylines, or at least filling the space between them. I'm not sure if the actors playing the caddies even knew about it before they saw the final cut.
For me this is a great movie, but not necessarily a good one. The technical flaws in storytelling are pretty egregious. But it captures the spirit of the time so well, kind of a mythological endless Seventies summertime, that the flaws actually enhance the movie for me. Form follows function I guess.
There have been several good books about the making of CADDYSHACK. The one I would recommend is CADDYSHACK: THE MAKING OF A HOLLYWOOD CINDERELLA STORY by Chris Nashawaty. As for more examples of this genre, I can't recommend highly enough the excellent compendium TEEN MOVIE HELL by Mike McPadden. Because both politically incorrect comedy and sex farces have fallen out of favor in Hollywood we rarely get these kind of movies nowadays but when I was a kid they cranked them out by the dozen year after year. (The HANGOVER Trilogy might have been the last hurrah for the genre up until this point.)

Trivia Bill Murray improvised the "Cinderella story" sequence from two lines of stage direction. Director Harold Ramis simply asked Murray to imagine himself announcing his own fantasy sports moment. Murray simply asked for four rows of 'mums and did the scene.
Trivia The rowdy, improvisational atmosphere during the shoot created by Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield, didn't sit well with all the members of the cast. Ted Knight, widely regarded as a very nice man, got fed up with the constant shenanigans. Initially, Murray's, Chase's and Dangerfield's roles were to be cameo appearances, but their deft improvising caused their roles to be expanded, much to the chagrin of Scott Colomby and some of the other cast members, whose roles were reduced as a result.
Trivia According to Chris Nashawaty's book "Caddyshack," Rodney Dangerfield was so unaccustomed to how films were made, Harold Ramis had to gently guide him to make sure he was comfortable. The first scene Dangerfield was in, the pro shop scene, was ready to go and Ramis called "Action." Nothing happened. Dangerfield just stood there. Ramis asked him if there was a problem. Was he ready? "Sure," Dangerfield said. Ramis called "Action" again. Again, nothing. Ramis walked over to him and said "Rodney, when I call 'Action,' that's your cue to come in and do the scene." "You mean, do my bit?" "Yes, do your bit." Ramis called "Action" for a third time. Silence. He then said "OK, Rodney, now do your bit." Dangerfield pounced into the room and delivered a perfect take, even improvising the line about getting a free bowl of soup. From then on, whenever Dangerfield was in a scene, Ramis never said "Action." He just said, "OK, Rodney, do your bit."
Trivia The famous scene that begins when Ty Webb's golf ball crashes into Carl Spackler's ramshackle house was not in the original script.
Trivia Harold Ramis suggested that a live animal play the gopher. Rusty Lemorande had been a professional puppeteer through his college years and convinced the team that only with the kind of control you had with a puppet could the quantity of material be filmed. He searched for a suitable creature builder. Companies such as The Henson Company (which became the premier creature builders in the 1980s) did not yet take outside assignments, so Lemorande contacted friends at Walt Disney Imagineering for help. One of the Disney theme park creature designers, Jeff Burke, was willing to create the character but only on a moonlight basis. Lemorande drew a simple sketch, indicating the range of movement the puppet would require and Burke fleshed out the remainder of the creature's design with further input from Lemorande.
Trivia Cindy Morgan was furious at Chevy Chase during their scene in his cabana due to the fact that he was improvising more than she had anticipated and didn't tell her ahead of time. This made her uncomfortable, which can be seen clearly in the scenes where she's having the tequila shots with him and the massage where all the oil accidentally spilled out on her back. Harold Ramis had to settle them down, and the scenes then went very smoothly
After filming wrapped each day, most of the cast and crew spent the nights partying, which eventually took its toll before the end of filming as cast and crew began to show up late for morning calls, holding up filming for several hours at a time. "Cocaine was 'driving everyone,'" said Michael O'Keefe, who portrayed the film's hero Danny Noonan. "It would be lunch and someone would say, 'Do you want to do a line?' 'Yeah, sure!' It was no big deal. This was the '70s."
Trivia To the end of his life, even though the film became better appreciated over time, Harold Ramis was dissatisfied with his directorial debut. "All I see are compromises and things we could have done better," he told "GQ" magazine in the late 2000s. His greatest complaint was that no one in the film, other than Michael O'Keefe, was able to swing his or her golf clubs properly.
Trivia Editor William C. Carruth's original assembled length was about 4-1/2 hours. Bill Murray's ball-mashing speech scene lasted about 30 minutes. Everyone hated the way the film was being put together, so they brought in another editor to cut it down to a more reasonable length and pace. Orion Pictures and the producers still were not happy with this cut, as the shortened version cut out much of the story with the caddies, due to both pace and the fact that Bill Murray's, Chevy Chase's and Rodney Dangerfield's parts set the pace for the film's strong comedic elements. The gopher was added at the last minute, to ensure that the movie had structure rather than being a series of vignettes.
Trivia Airplanes were frequently flying low over the golf course where the movie was filmed, and interfering with filming, because the course was only a few miles directly west of the east-west runways at Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, and lay under the busy airport's main landing approach. It is true that a commercial passenger flight was on final approach at the moment of the huge explosion when Carl Spackler tries to blow up the gopher, and the pilot did report a plane crash to Air Traffic Control.
But if you want more trivia here's a link m.imdb.com/title/tt0080487/trivia/?ref_=tt_ql_trv

The unedited documentary about the making of Caddyshack is very interesting. There was alot of partying going on. The Gopher became a huge argument between the producers and writer Doug Kenney (He also wrote Animal House and was co-founder of National Lampoon Magazine) causing Kenney to quit the film . Kenny later committed suicide.

I have watched this movie so many times since I first saw it on cable TV back in 1981. I was 12 when it came out and my parents didn't seem to have a problem with me and my siblings seeing it back then. This is a movie that you should watch with friends and then quote random lines from it whenever you get together. That's we've done for the past 40 years. lol

Rodney Dangerfield is not only a stand-up comedian, he owned a chain of stand-up comedy venues, and was always looking to give new stand-ups their brakes. He even did HBO comedy specials where a lot of famous people got their first appearance on television. You can probably find those on TH-cam.

Harold Ramos directed, and Chevy Chase starred in National Lampoon’s Vacation (the first one). It has the same kind of comedic sensibility.
If you want an underrated film, and Steven Spielberg’s rare foray into madcap screwball comedy, you should check out 1941. It stars Ned Beaty, Dan Ackroyd, John Belushi, Robert Stack, John Candy, and many more names you’ll recognize.

Bill Murray improvised the whole Cinderella story scene.

Trivia time! The minor role of Bishop Pickering is essayed by Henry Wilcoxon, an actor with a venerable cinema career behind him. He was a favorite, and a friend, of Cecil B. De Mille, who cast him as Marc Antony in 1934's Cleopatra, Richard of England in 1935's The Crusades, and Pharaoh's general Pentaur in 1956's The Ten Commandments. (Fun fact: The musical cue beneath the Bishop's golf game with Bill Murray is actually Charlton Heston's Prophet theme from "Commandments" [!], composed by Elmer Bernstein.) 😄

    1. Bill Murry and Chevy Chase couldn't stand each other. It started at SNL with an incident that they almost came to blows.
That's why Chase's ride there ended as quickly as it did. It was a miracle they pulled the one scene together off.
    2. Harold Ramis(RIP) played with Murry in Stripes and was a co-writer and character but he didn't direct.
    3. Ramis DID direct the first Vacation movie.

By the way Shan. I saw you make a cameo in the “Cinema Rules” channels reaction for The Sandlot.

Some fun facts about this movie were that they were practical explosion effects because this was filmed on a golf course set to be destroyed and built upon, so they could literally do any kind of damage they wanted to. Also, the cast had trouble getting up in time to start shooting each day because they were drinking and getting high staying at the nearby motel. Only Ted Knight (Smails) did not participate in the partying and became very frustrated with the others not taking their jobs seriously enough.

The popularity Bill Murray gained as a result of this movie was a big part of the feud that developed between Murray and Chase.
