    Thanks for this video. I’m new to garlic and have had issues drying. I like your method of drying. I’m gonna try it next harvest.

    What cultivars do you plant and I assume the size is based on cultivar? Why do you cut the vegetation off? I was told to leave the leaves on until the neck is hard then cut it off. Explain please, not just what to do but why. Also I was never told to cut the scapes off. When do you do that?

      The scapes come in early July around here. If you don't take them off bulb size will suffer. I have tried a number of time this experiment and always the garlics where I left the scape are smaller. As for cultivars they are just different hardnecks; Musick, Purple Glazer, Georgian Fire and German Red. Lastly cutting off the vegetation is not standard practice but I've been doing it for years and in this climate the garlic cures faster and better without it. On top of that without the vegetation I can cure the garlic in a much smaller compact area. The vegetation takes up too much room. Good luck!

    What about the nutrition left in the leaves…I hang mine first before the first step you show?

      I've heard that the leaves help the bulbs swell but I've seen no difference and curing is so much better without the tops.

    So you did not water them at all since you planted them?

    • @TheLazyGardenerNJ
      @TheLazyGardenerNJ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most years I do not. This last year (not shown in the video) I did water 2x I believe because we had such a heatwave but normally with a good mulching water will just cause rot.

      @@TheLazyGardenerNJ when did you know when to water? Did you kept the soil moist?

    • @TheLazyGardenerNJ
      @TheLazyGardenerNJ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      With garlic it's better to assume they don't need water unless it's a heat wave and the plants look droopy.

    Do you eat the stalk and leaves of garlic?

    • @TheLazyGardenerNJ
      @TheLazyGardenerNJ  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I eat the leaves occasionally in spring with fava beans. The stalk itself is edible when it is flowering, it's called a scape.

      I’ve seen people make pesto with the scapes. Looks delicious

      Generally you can plant 4 to 6 weeks before your first frost date up to about 2 to 4 weeks after (there are so many opinions on this I'm giving you the full range). To be more specific I would need to know your hardiness zone (Maryland has several) or more specifically where you are in Maryland if you want me to look it up.

      This is my first year planting garlic (just moved to a temperate region from a tropical one, never had any luck in the tropics; too much rainfall,) and I think I’m going to try both. We don’t have any frost here (Pafos, Cyprus,) but have got a knowledgeable local gardener friend, so she’s advised my on planting dates in late autumn and late winter. Think the late autumn date is going to be more successful, because summer comes fast and furious, here and in order to get a full growing season in before the atrocious summer heat comes, I think my late October planting date will produce the best bulbs. But we will see what happens! I may be surprised!
