  • Learn how to make a collage in Photoshop with photos. This Photoshop tutorial will use grids and guides to align the pictures perfectly. We first will make placement holders for the photos using different colors. Then we will use the Create Clipping Mask feature which will connect the photos to that layer.
You then can add different color borders and frames to the photo collage. I used a hear shaped photo for the center. You can use any custom shape you want.
I am using different colors to fill the sections. It doesn't matter what color you use. I just use different colors so you can see the different sections.
If the marquee tool and selections are not automatically snapping to the guides, then go to View-Snap To and make sure there is a check mark on all of them. Also View-Snap should be check marked.

Thank you so much. This helped me a lot to make a photo collage to be printed. All the guidelines were given clearly. I'd recommend even a beginner to get started with this one, because even though this is a complicated process the video guides us smoothly.

This was terrific. Not only did I learn the basics implied in the title, but lots of other tips as well such as using the blending tool. I'm a total novice, but made great strides today. Thanks for a very thorough tutorial. One question: my current version of PS doesn't have simple shapes, but only silly things like Trees and Boats (Who needs that?). Do you know how I can get the ones you used?

Hi Leslie, I am glad you like my tutorial! You can create your own heart and make it into a custom shape. It is an easy tutorial done in Photoshop. You can also search google "custom shapes photoshop" and download them.

Thank You for great tutorial, but I have one question. Can border be transparent, because I have own patterned background which I want to put behind? Thanks again.

Yes. There are several ways to do this. One way of doing it is merging all the borders into one layer. Set that layer to the top. Then place your background pattern image to the top, increase so it fits whole document. Right click on your background pattern layer, select "Create Clipping Mask". Your pattern will show on all the borders. Then duplicate your background pattern layer, then move it to the bottom of the layer.

Hello ;) I'm simply trying to place three photos on top of each other in a stack. I've tried following your method , but I can't get the photo to connect to the layer as you did. I'm using Elements 11. I was so excited, because it was going so well..and then I hit an wall, lol. I don't see an option to hit the check mark. I can add one photo to the middle section of the three sections though. I can't add the first image to the top section, or the bottom section with the third photo. I must be building the grid incorrectly or something? Damn I wish I were younger and learned all this in class! hehehe.
Thx for the video, I'll keep trying.

I am not sure about Elements but if you right click the photo in the layer panel, and select "Create Clipping Mask", it will connect the photo to the layer below it.
