    One of the MANY reasons why I think this film is a masterpiece is how natural it is. In so many movies, a reaction or emotion is forced from the audience by using something like a character death or a really intense action shot, and though I do believe there is a time and a place for such tools, I'm so glad that La La Land didn't need them. This film gradually connects you with the characters and their story so by the end, only simple things like a few notes on a piano or one last meaningful look sets off a waterfall of emotion. I have honestly never cried so hard or felt so much while watching a film in theaters, and it left me in a state of shock that what seemed like so little could affect me so deeply.

    I don't necessarily think that La La Land is incredibly revolutionary by any means, and I do have some quips with it, the reason I loved the film so much is the way I felt when I walked out. Inspired, maybe? A little less alone, I think is more like it. I don't know. It made me feel devasted and indestructible all at the same time. I definitely saw a lot of myself in that film, in many different ways.

  • @sophiarichmond5052
    @sophiarichmond5052 7 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    Oh wow. This is beautifully done, well presented in a way that doesn't read as a simple review. While my creative interests lie more in writing, hearing about all these visual callbacks to classic films is really rather interesting and honestly, I think it highlights your own talent - in being able to read into all of this so well, it's no wonder that you incorporate these ideas so flawlessly within your own work. More videos like this would be incredible to see. And of course, I have no doubt someone will be making videos like this about your films one day.

    i feel like this is also a reason many people who don't like it feel that way, classics can make you feel excluded and ignored in a way, and i at least feel that la la land does the same thing

    This video is brilliant! I've just spend a semester studying semiotic, and it was so interesting to see it applied so eloquently on a modern movie. It's also funny how, even though I haven't seem most of the movies la la land references, the scenes still felt familiar to me - I think that's the geniality of it, how it makes you feel at home at a place you may have never been. Human brains are weird and fantastic. Thank you for putting into words something so many of us felt, Hazel!!

    I loved this. Really glad you mentioned the New York, New York comparisons. I feel the backlash is always do to the fact it's been so positively received. First of all, Hazel this is such an informative and interesting video. I really hope you get to be a hugely successful director in Hollywood some day soon - you really have earned it.
    This film has beautiful cinematography and a stunning soundtrack and Emma Stone is absolutely amazing, but even thought I really wanted to love it, I just didn't. It has a beautiful ending and I loved the alternate reality sequence, but I'm just not convinced with the rest of it. Maybe this is just my ignorance, but to me making a near identical (with plot and characters) film to New York, New York, Chazelle is simply churning out a story that already exists. I get that La La Land is essentially a love letter to those older musicals that brings the romance of the era into the present day, but (at least for me) no more than a few references would be necessary. For me, Chazelle would only have truly succeeded in making it a classic by creating his own new scenes, instead of mirroring and copying those that already exist. In my opinion, the best scenes and bits of films are those that are truly original. For me, Chazelle hasn't fully achieved that with this film. It doesn't feel like a classic to me; it feels like a beautifully filmed cover of an era that defined cinema. To me, it's "classic" feel is fraudulent, as the moments that make you feel reminiscent of old movies are not just referred to slightly, but practically copied.
    My point is: if somebody made a film with wizards duelling at a magic school, a bunch of short people with broad hairy feet who live in the mountains and a detective who lives in London with an assistant who is an ex-soldier, they would instantly be pegged as a "copycat". The nonexistent director of that nonexistent (I hope) film would be, I think, berated for clearly pulling from Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and Sherlock. The musicals Chazelle includes are equally well known if not more renowned. I don't think Chazelle should be berated for it; he created a stunning piece of cinema. But by combining all of these things, he ultimately fails in producing an original piece of work as it lacks enough differences and twists to satisfy the fresh stories that some audiences (including myself) crave.

  • @Elba830

    La La Land is a beautiful movie. The colour scheme is fantastic but the problem lies within the story. There is no real stakes, it feels cheap and empty when the main characters do anything good because of a lack of real struggle. The music also takes me personally out of the story. I really wanted to like it but I didn't. it was a little empty and felt pretentious. If you enjoyed it good but I don't think it deserves it's appraisal

    • @ebonyrose5430
      @ebonyrose5430 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt Farrell I think the use of the songs were well thought out and placed. The only part that confused me was the opening number (Another day of sun) because the main characters were not immediately introduced until after the song. I also found the five year gap a bit misleading because Mia and Sebastian didn't leave each other on bad terms but when they crossed paths again it seemed totally random (unless the intention of that was to imply they had lost touch with each other whilst going for their dreams)

    HAZEL THIS IS WONDERFUL not only did it make me think more about about my feelings of la la land and explain why I love it so much, but it also explained so many other parts of cinematography and musicals as well. Ive seen some people say that La La Land doesn't feel like a musical whilst it does to me, and maybe that is because it is more of a 'classic' and mirrors the style of older musicals that some of the more modern ones.
    Overall, I love La La Land and its style and I definitely love this video and the way you've structured it

    I'm in a library, working on my dissertation for a master's degree in film studies. This made me tear up. This is inspirational in two respects: 1) because it reminds me what a masterpiece La La Land is, and 2) because it reminds me that talking about these films, getting to the nitty gritty of why they effect us and shape us the way they do, is so important.
    Right - must crack on. Disney films and their authorial reputations aren't going to write about themselves.

    Hazel! As a student of film in my final year of university it is SO unbelievably nice to hear someone critically discussing a film I've fell in love with at such an honest and engaging level, with colloquialisms I'm currently surrounded with in my studies. Your passion for the subject shows and I can only hope I can one day communicate my thoughts on films this way whilst also being so educating. :) Best video I've seen on youtube thus far x

    This video has made me fall deeper in love with la la land, because it's simply such a beautiful film and musical. But as well as that, it also causes an emotional response, and sends so many messages to the audience. I may have cried a little.

    Wow, the Scorsese back story on "New York, New York" is so neat! What a beautiful perspective on how a film from one director brings greater depth and meaning to another film in a manner that is encouraging! Fantastic job on this video

    I've noticed that these in depth somewhat technical videos often don't do quite as well views-wise as other videos on your channel (your piece on Arrival being a recent example). It's brilliant that you're still making the content you evidently want to make, not least because they're bloody fantastic and insightful videos. This one in particular makes me want to go watch La La Land again even sooner than I was planning to to watch it more closely (and cry with more wailing, obvs.).

    Words cannot describe how much I love this video! I loved LA LA Land. I genuinely wanted to dance after seeing the film, but this is such an in depth analysis, and your passion and enthusiasm for film is so evident. As a fellow film enthusiast, this brought back so many of my excitable memories from my film studies A-level and I just found myself getting excited with you! This video highlighted all of my feelings about the film! If you were to do more of these videos I would watch the hell out of them. ...Now I need to see the film again...

    This was 10:21 minutes of pure truth and fact. I loved La La Land and when I see that people understand why it is incredible and point out why, it makes me so happy. The detail put into it and the vibe it radiates is so amazing that you just feel like it was hand crafted for you to witness. Thank you, Hazel. You're a star x

    Going to see La La Land with my best friend Caitlin in late January of this year will forever be one of my favourite memories, all the lights and the colours and the music I saw and heard and the pure raw emotions I felt will be always in my mind whenever I hear the name of the film. It's a beautiful film that envokes these gorgeous emotions. What a great masterpiece

    I'm not a huge La La Land fan, but I appreciate fine filmmaking. You're love for both this film and film in general is beautiful and gives me hope for the future of Hollywood that films can be made with extreme passion (whether everyone loves the story/message or not) as opposed to mindless sequels and action movies with no real heart to them. Wonderful video xxx
