As a musician, there is so much to learn watching these guys: collaboration, patience, the art of listening, taste; there is so much these guys are doing! It's so impressive! These guys show that you can have more than 5-6 people on stage and it not sound like a mess, but a beautiful and well thought out sound. Good on ya Michael League. Good on ya...
this arrangement of FLOOD is the best yet.. wow when they added the extra measures of Taron and Nate at the end it was amazing. thx for making the world of MUSICIANSHIP that much better Snarky! Miss u Robert Seawright I know ur busy man
I can't get enough of this bad or this song. Hottest band out period and only other band that I can say comes close would be sound check. Can't wait to see them this weekend in the atl!!!!
To the Fusion newbs saying the drummer was "Out of the pocket" or "not in the groove" during his SOLO beginning... Do you not know your modulations or polyrhythms? lol I love Larnell and Sputt but they all each have their unique playstyle. Some people nuthug Larnell or Sput almost exclusively. Why can't you just appreciate the uniqueness of every drummer? These guys are all talented and I definitely enjoy hearing Flood from different drummers and different intro variations. That's what makes playing Live so amazing. It doesn't have to sound like the same exact "Groove" every time. With such a song like Flood, you make your own groove every time as you can do so much with time sigs like 5 or 7. What I actually get from this guy is more of the Hip hop feel in the 7/8 rather than the jazzy melodic feel you hear(which is also great) in the recorded album version. Interestingly, Mike had said that the opening riff for this was intended for Hip Hop and didn't even realize it was in 7 until he added in everything else.
+TheAlmonteFilms Get off your high horse. You know, people are not robots. People can make mistakes. Larnell dropped his stick once, I was like: "what?" - "how?" And yes almontefilms, you so-called expert, I know modulations, polyrhythms/meters...I think any drummer who listens to Snarky Puppy. And did you not see Cory Henry's face at 5:42? Larnell is great with those techniques, whilst Sput is more pocket-grooving. It just didn't feel right. Just like Cecil Taylor when he's breaking harmony.
What high horse? I was defending the guy from people saying "No one can keep up with Larnell" or "Sput would have been better" etc etc, Never claimed to be an expert. Never claimed that anyone was a robot or that anyone doesn't make mistakes. Nor did I put anyone in the band down. I did the opposite. All I said was to appreciate the variation in style of different drummers. He was just being expressive and abstract. Whether Cory Henry was feelin it or not? Idk. I won't judge based on his face or try to make it seem like I'm turning him on his bandmates off of just his face. To me personally it looked like he was in that waiting mode when you're trying to figure out what a soloist is doing next. It must be a lot of pressure to substitute for ANY of these guys in the main band honestly. And it must suck when people bitch at you for not playing exactly like the guy you're substituting for.
It's funny that whole time cory was looking at Lockett during his solo he was like, "hes gonna be my drummer one day!" Annnnnnd that's exactly what happen! Lmao Sick!
again, TaRon totally kills it on his attack and chops, but I miss the Sput pocket. I mean though maybe that's an unfair comparison because Robert fucking Searight
Actually, when I first found Snarky Puppy around a year prior to their massive hype (due to the Family Dinner-sessions etc.) this song and "Skate U" was the first songs I heard and thereby meaning this guy Taron Lockett being the first drummer of Snarky Puppy I heard. And I found/find him immensely tight and pocket in a very appealing hip-hop way in these tracks. Then, when I found out that Sput was the actual drummer of the band, I got (no offense) a little turned off so I did'nt explore Snarky Puppy any further. Afterwards, I find Sput very much perfect to fit the chair, but I've always loved Lockett's more aggressive playing style
heybuddyheybuddy not to put down any of the others though, these guys are all just so good. And the relationship between Nate and Sput is really special
they suck.....they should try to learn music, how to play it, how to write it..... don't you think????? mouah ah ah i'm just jaelous!!!!!! you really are fucking good and true musicians!
This is Cory Henry's drummer, man. He has his group called the Funk Apostles and Taron Lockett (the drummer) plays for that group. You're right, 5:34 is quite outlandish, but as others have said, it was his solo to create. I thought it was very interesting, but to each his own.
My faith in the future of the world has been restored. As long as listeners and communicators like this walk the planet.....

Are you kidding, that drum solo was SICK! Perfect synchronization!!!!
Best version of Flood !
Definitely agree. Sick !!
This is up there. I like the Dunlop session one as well. Saw them last February at SFJazz and they killed it then too.
Bruh these guys...
Idc what anyone says. This is the greatest jazz band ever!
One of the baddest bands out there right now... hands down.

that INTRO!!! LOVE IT

+TheAlmonteFilms Btw, the part 6:00 - 6:20 sounds great to me, cool chops.
Yeah, yeah, yeah......
My favourite version of Flood!
I hope that if they play this song at their concert here in London in Nov., that they play THIS version.
3:14 love those chord subs. It's incredible how they all heard Mike do it and then picked up on it immediately the next time.
OMG... Beautiful... and this is my favorite Joint... Gooooooooooooooooooooo...
You guys are awesome. Love the groove!
Taron killed that solo...
This is my Joint... and i love this version of it... MMMMMMMMMUUUUUUSSSSSIIIIICCC...
I was here! This is awesome, thanks for filming!
hands down the best Flood intro they've recorded
That guitar in the beginning!! Whoa! loved it
Truly musicians doing what they were called to do
You guys are my new favorite band. WOW. Come to Dayton OH!

Love that new guitar part in the intro!
What a drummer....!!!
Straight killing that guitar.
So chill 🙌💋
It's funny that whole time cory was looking at Lockett during his solo he was like, "hes gonna be my drummer one day!" Annnnnnd that's exactly what happen! Lmao Sick!
Love how at 9:10 the whole band grooves in at the same time the same way.
amazing!
Damn, that drummer..... !!
Hey guys, can somebody tell me the kind of Wurlitzer is Corey Henry using!?? I just love the sound!!! Anyway Amazing band
I miss the old snarky like this...
that intro tho!!!!!! eargasm!!!!
Yes
Love the homie in the audience "Yessuh YESSUH!" LOL Love it #MusicianCulture
My homies b killing..... love from neworleans
Eddie xmas
Oh my stars...
There's part from around 2:20 which reminds me of early Genesis. What do you think?
Muito bom!!!
OMG ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS 4:46 sooo crazyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
its in 7 for some (mellophone solo), 5 for some (drum duet/guitar polyrhythm groove), and 4 at the end for at bit.
and Sput basically makes this song on Tell Your Friends
A Wurlitzer 7300 combo organ, they made it as their competition to the Vox Continental!
where's Sput at? :-( especially during that drum solo :-( :-(
Wow
Caleb, who you're referring to (drummer in red tee at the Dallas show) doesn't sport a beard. Not the same guy.
yep
What is that Wurlitzer? on top of the Juno.
I'm sending them the bill for facial-reconstruction surgery--consider my face melted
is the drummer the keyboardist (the keyboardist in the red shirt in the Dallas show may 4th, 2013) or vice versa??
I actually don't think a drum solo fits this song, but very good anyways. Nice to hear this genre again after all these years.
5:17 Genesis again? although the drum solo is juxtapositional beyond crazy :)
omg omg omg
Insane! Killing!! However they need to chill out when someone's soloing...! Couldn't hear it that great....
DMBtomp is probably the result of no/poor recording mixing.
2:00 FF (2xM)
end opposite corners :// nice editing
sounds like some new planet shit. lol these is my fovarite they play too!!
HOLY HOT!!!!!
c'est tellement hot!
04:46 !!!!!!!!!
Can someone tell me that snare???
is that Corey Henry on keys??
Dat face at 8:55
what is that wurlitzer keyboard ?????????
the guitar player chords omg
lol drummer killed @ 5:02 - 5:15
what time is this 7/4??
again, TaRon totally kills it on his attack and chops, but I miss the Sput pocket.
I mean though maybe that's an unfair comparison because Robert fucking Searight
just check their faces haha
7/8 actually and then switches to 5/4, you should be able to get the rest from that
oh i see it's a 7300 c wurlitzer
God...the section at 5:17 must be hell for them witht he drummer playing all those crazy off rhythms
Shame the sound mix is so bad here. I’ve heard other songs from the same performance sounding great... great music though.
funny how no matter who they bring in to substitute for sput, they never quite meet his pocket
Actually, when I first found Snarky Puppy around a year prior to their massive hype (due to the Family Dinner-sessions etc.) this song and "Skate U" was the first songs I heard and thereby meaning this guy Taron Lockett being the first drummer of Snarky Puppy I heard. Martin Welling Interesting! guess I'm just biased. I love how Sput always looks so effortless but pulls off some of the most complex patterns
All these guys are unique, Taron especially. My personal favourite is Larnell, I think he brings a really special energy to the band, but there you go
heybuddyheybuddy not to put down any of the others though, these guys are all just so good. And the relationship between Nate and Sput is really special
horns aren't quite loud enough.
Oké so this wasn't supposed to be a drum solo........ LOL
they suck.....they should try to learn music, how to play it, how to write it..... don't you think????? mouah ah ah i'm just jaelous!!!!!! you really are fucking good and true musicians!
5:34 - Corey Henry like "WTF you doing drummer? can you be any more out of the groove"
Tyler Fuller exactly
they need larnell or sput
+Tyler Fuller What groove? It was his solo to create...
+Tyler Fuller lol you know thats his drummer right? Its TaRon Lockett, AND he was doing that on purpose lol.
+Puff McCloud Awesome playing...!
This is Cory Henry's drummer, man. He has his group called the Funk Apostles and Taron Lockett (the drummer) plays for that group. You're right, 5:34 is quite outlandish, but as others have said, it was his solo to create. I thought it was very interesting, but to each his own.
wow
Yes
yep
