    What a titanic voice... a lioness roaring, with perfect legato and a tone richer than a tenor's. This is the lost art among mezzos: clear enunciation and bright resonance while retaining the natural darkness of the voice and utilizing the expansive chest voice in all its glory.

    This woman was a truly great singer. Her Amneris was a match for Callas's Aida, and check out the strength of her middle to chest register here. A dramatic mezzo with legato and musicianship.

      listen to her Liber scriptum to witness a full RINGING OVERTONE whenever she pushes her chest voice down... she is amazing

    She was a worthy Amneris to Callas' 1951 Aida.
    When they went into chest voice it was hard to tell them apart

    Absolutely fantastic! How I love such big, dark voices with amazing chest.

    Personally I think she was a better singer than Simionato or Cossotto. A shame the record companies ignored her so totally.

    An absolutely great singer & during her time she could not be matched for the dark timbre of her instrument or for her amazingly wide repertoire. I have yet to hear her in Mozart but will search this out. She made relatively few studio recordings (I have one from DGG with her singing Rossini, Donizetti, Verdi, Wagner etc.) & thanks primarily for all the postings You Tube. In a live recording of her Amneris in a 1951 Mexico City AIDA she matches Callas easily & was even 2 years younger. Berganza later made a similar impression on me & was a lighter more lyric voice. Marilyn Horne combined parts of both Dominguez & Berganza‘s repertoire a few years later & all 3 remain unlike to this day.

    Correction: all 3 remain UNIQUE to this day (see below, sorry for the typo)

    What is she singing? Callas sang Aïda to her Amneris in what I think to be the greatest recording of that opera to date.

    she sounds more of a contralto than a mezzo here

      @LohengrinO  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      she has exquisite top as well which you can hear in her fantastic deliver of Liber scriptum as posted by Addiobelpassato where you also notice the UNIQUE ultra-RINGING overtone when she pushes her chest voice... she was extremely talented

      @nathandavis3002 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      already listened to it. exquisite singing :) she does have quite a top register too. I am still amazed though, she definitely fits the mezzo vocal fach, but she also seems more comfortable in the contralto range than most proclaimed contraltos I have heard today.

      its also great to hear a mezzo voice that has such dark, richness, yet retains a sparkling clarity, and crystaline tone, rather than falling into mezzo mushiness alla Cecilia Bartoli

    • @LohengrinO
      @LohengrinO  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      As Birgit had said: Many great Brunhildes were truly mezzos... I usually say: 90% of music is written for the middle voice, Id rather have a superb middle voice that cant go up rather than 3 notes around C6 and no middle voice to sing the Music!!
