It doesn't matter how old you are, this song will always put a lump in your throat that will almost choke you. This is a great story! Kudos to whoever wrote this 👌
Red Sovine put feeling in his storytelling. This was always one of my favorites. My dad was a trucker most of my life and used to take me on short runs with him. What an adventure it was for me...everytime.
I used to perform locally with a Gentleman named Frank Grill who had a popular Country Music band in the area. In his older years Frank's voice started to go and he would have me fill in as the vocalist... one night we were doing a show at a bar called the Crystal Lounge... It was a rowdy place, people having fun and drinking, being loud, so loud that I felt like that they weren't paying much attention to our music at all. At one point during our set I asked the boys if they would be able to do the background music for the song Teddy Bear... they said sure, but Frank turned to me and said "you can't do a song like that in a bar! These folks wanna dance and have fun"!! I looked Frank in the eye and said "They aren't paying attention to us anyway, I am doing the song"!!! He rolled his eyes, but jumped in with his guitar anyway when the band started to play. I introduced the song by saying "Here's a sad ol' song that is one of my favorite story songs"... I wouldn't have believed this if I hadn't seen it myself, but everyone in that rowdy bar shut right up! They quieted down and were giving me and the song 100% of their attention!!! As the song was nearing the end, I looked around and could see tears in many people's eyes. That is a TESTAMENT to a well written song... very powerful!
Us truckers are big and slow vehicles on the road. We are people also, we make the sacrifices of being able to be at home with our family. We keep food in the store, cars on the car lots, clothes, building materials etc. please show some respect and give us the space we need for our trucks.
Ima trucker for over 16yrs I've covered 100% of this country 30x's over easily. The 1st x I heard this song i was up in the mountains of Oregon thousands of miles from home & my family. Then when I came home for hometime I went 2 my baby girls school with my truck & explained the life of a trucker. Then the whole (small)school came out 2 take witness of my mobile home career. They seen the entire inside & outside of the truck. Then I let them all honk the horn even teachers who most of them there 1st time experiencing th@. The best moment of it all was seeing the Joy alllllllll over my daughters face. Just know money can buy some stuff, but it can't buy everything. True & pure things th@ matter are non negotiable moments. Surely th@ was 1 of them 4 me. God bless u all non negotiable!!!
My step dad drove a semi hauling steel in the tri-state area (Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio). He came off the road and told my mother he had to go buy a song he had just heard driving home. It was Red Sovine and Tready Bear. We all listened to it and from my 10 yr old baby dist et up through mom, we all cried.
This is the song I was talking about that would make you tear up. It gets me every time I hear it. I had a feeling it would get to you. Red Sovine is a great story teller and I will give you some more from him.
My grandpa was a truck driver and he used to play Red Sovine tapes all the time. I know dozens of his songs. However, I never thought that they would reach the level of exposure they have now thanks to TH-cam.
The trucking community is amazing. My Dad was a trucker. We lived in south Texas. He fell off his trailer in Oklahoma. My Mom was trying to get to him at the hospital. As soon as she hit the road and put a call out for directions on the CB (before google map), truckers came to the rescue. They found out what she was driving. They would come on the CB when they saw her and tell her to just follow them. As one trucker would have to turn off, another would take his place. They got her all the way to Tulsa where a cop too over to get her all the way to the hospital (with lights flashing).
Honestly. This is the happy part. Many have done versions of the " fall out" of this version that will totarip your heart out your chest. Believe me. I'm an old fart....and I'll admit to bawling my eyes out to this, you have no idea just how much I freak out to the various follow up versions
I grew up listening to Red Sovine on the radio. He was one of my Dad's (who was a trucker) favorites. I lost my Dad 24 years ago. Hearing this brings back so many memories. Red Sovine was a master at these stories. Each tugs on the heartstrings. Some that are well worth checking out are "Teddy Bear's Last Ride", "Lil Joe", and "Roses For Momma".
Well damn. I don't know how many times I've heard this song over the course of my lifetime and I kind of grew up in this culture. And yeah and particularly seeing that you really understood it and it moved you, I will actually have to admit that even though I've seen it so many times, my allergies are acting up a bit. Great reaction and please do more of this genre it's amazing. And there's so much humor and upbeat stuff too it's not all tearjerkers. But it runs the whole gamut there are so many. Check out red simpson, awful lot to learn, he got his start opening for Buck Owens out in the palace in Bakersfield and then when Buck really broke and started touring nationally Red Simpson stepped into his headlining position. He's got a great voice and he wrote so many Fantastic Trucking songs. Another one that is super classic is Dave dudley, two six packs away. And then many artists covered Six Days on the road. But the two battling top hits, laugh, or Red Sovine and Dave Dudley. And that's the tip of the iceberg there is so much more and it's all over the map and some of it goes all the way back to the 1930s it really does.
I love this song when I was a little girl my grandpa was a truck driver I would go with him on short runs and he taught me this song . We would always sing this. Another good one is Phantom 309 you should give it a listen
I was a karaoke host for over three year's, a full year seven night's a week. My singing was the only thing in my life my father had shown that he was proud of me for. He bugged me to do this song but I was never able to make it through it without getting choked up. I only wish I could have done it once without error for my dad who passed in 2012.
Happy tears are the best. As sad as the first half is, the second half is so beautiful. I've heard this many, many times, and it never get old, and never fails to bring those happy tears.
Red Sovine is a true story teller. Phantom 309 is one of his best I have ever heard. It started for me when I heard Teddy Bear the first time years ago.
This song brings a tear for more than one reason. Yes its an emotional song but its deeper to me. My dad loved Red. My dad passed away last year and when i listen to this i think of him. My mom who died shortly before loved flowers for mama. Cause of covid i missed her funeral but i was able to give flowers to my mama
I remember listening to this and the other trucker songs on the weekend with my family as we played games. This song always makes me cry when I hear it again. It's been a while but it was beautiful.
Such a great song, always puts a tear in my eye. Red Sovine was such a great story teller. You should check out Phantom 309 and Vietnam Set of Cards also real touching songs. He also had a great singing voice he did songs like Truck Drivin' son of a Gun and Why Baby Why, the later with Webb Pierce.

@footboydl Oh, I totally get it! I was only 7 when Convoy came out, but I remember always wanting to stay within earshot of the radio so as not to miss it if it came on. Funny enough, your post made me remember another craze from around the same time, and it, too, spawned a novelty song. Have you ever heard Bigfoot, recorded by Baltimore DJ Bro Smith? Sounds corny as hell to me today, but as a kid, I both loved it and was a little frightened of it at the same time. I recall Bigfoot being all over the news in 1976, when that song came out. Plus there was a theatrical movie released that year called Sasquatch: The Legend of Bigfoot; a book by Peter Byrne called The Search for Bigfoot: Monster, Myth or Man?; and the Milton Bradley board game Bigfoot, which released the following year. (I devoured anything related to Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, and UFOs back then!) Years later, I had a pleasant email exchange with the book author, who was kind enough to autograph a copy for me. He even invited me to an annual Bigfoot conference in Washington! I'm sure I would have enjoyed it, but I had to politely decline owing to a conflict. (Not to mention, it would have been a heck of a tough sell with the missus!)
@@robtaylor5550 I've never heard of Bigfoot other than the Legend of Bigfoot. My other Obsession at the time was Olivia Newton John. I dated one of her album covers for 3 years! LOL

Red Sovine co-wrote this with Dale Royal,Tommy Hill and Billy Joe Burnette and released in 76. There is a follow up to this song called
Little Joe.
I am not really a country music fan, but I listened the whole song because of the great storytelling. And ended up with a lump in my throat.
Indeed! When this song played on the radio when I was driving, I had to pull over.
I couldn't sing this on karaoke!
@32a34a The follow up version is cc called Teddy Bear's Last Ride. I have it by Red Sovine and by Diane Williams.
Red Sovine put feeling in his storytelling. This was always one of my favorites. My dad was a trucker most of my life and used to take me on short runs with him. What an adventure it was for me...everytime.
Red Sovine is one of the best story tellers in country music. Phantom 309, Giddy up Go, and Little Joe are some you might enjoy.
And Roses For Mama and Little Rosa.
Little Rosa also
