I will never understand why people move from a bad place which was ruined by the local voting patterns to a better place and proceed to start ruining the new place by voting for the same bad ideas. If you move to Idaho, then adopt the local ways. There are reasons it is a better place to live.

Maybe idaho should build a wall around the entire state. A big beautiful wall. And get Mexico to pay for it.

Biggest con is if your a native and don't have the resources people moving here have, your getting priced out of house and home by the influx of people coming here. Out of all the states in the nation Idaho has one of the lowest average wage rates. So be prepared to make less money. Which only adds to the natives being priced out of house and home. I've heard some people from california that came here complaining that housing is now as expensive or more so then where they came from in california. I've lived here all my life and im 46.

Basically everything that they hated about where they left (high housing prices, traffic, etc) they just brought here with them. The city has changed. I used to love it, a lot, now I am just ok with it. By the way, I've been living in Boise for almost 30 years now, prior to that I grew up not far from Boise, so I've seen lots of changes. The changes in just the past 4-5 years have been the most drastic and its all in reaction to the massive influx of new people. I will be honest a lot of it is traffic frustration as it rapidly got worse around here. It's hard to stay positive when I am constantly badgered while driving in my own town, people flipping me off, running red lights, etc. It was not like this just 5-10 years ago.
I get it, things change, but this was way too fast. Other people are entitled to "nice", it's a free country, etc etc. But when it grows this fast, instead of people adapting to what we have here, fitting in with our relaxed culture, they have instead kept their bad habits from where they came from, like driving like maniacs.
I feel bad for people like you, that grew up here. I recently met a young couple that have grown up here, got married and want to start having a family but are putting having children on hold because they can't find a reasonable home to live in.

@@ShimmyD-u7g I've lived in Santa Cruz, CA and I share some things in common with you -dismay about the very rapid changes happening, changes for the worse.. I am upset by the influx of the techies from Silicon Valley which have changed the vibe, esp. the more aggressive traffic. Don't feel so safe anymore. Feels like crime is increasing. Plus due to Gavin Newsom's misguided housing laws passed, neighborhoods are being overbuilt as people cram multiiple buildings on their lots and tearing down small businesses to build.. more expensive housing... So.. I feel like a potential refugee - and I understand the resentment against wave of CA population..

This is from perspective of a young single person. I graduated from U of Idaho and visit my friends in Boise often after college (currently living in Seattle). I think Boise is a great place if you have an established family and circle of friends. Much slower and more chill pace of life than big cities, and the outdoors are beautiful. However, it is not the ideal place to meet others and trying to form a family or circle of friends here. The weekend night life is mostly BSU students or young California transplants congregated in downtown area, and in my experience, they are mostly very closed off within their own groups and not as open to meet new people as people in Seattle are. Also, there seemed to be only one concentrated pocket of night life in downtown Boise, in contrast to other bigger cities where you have spread out pockets for different crowds like college kids, artists, club goers, well established young professionals, emo punk alternative people... I like many aspects of living in Boise, I just think it is a bit more challenging to move here as a single person trying to make friends verses moving here with a family and maybe some pre-established connections.

My motivation to move to Idaho is to flee the socio-political chaos of California, and to relocate in political climate that aligns more with my own, but to avoid hot humid climates. In otherwords, I would prefer the 4-season climate of Boise Idaho with the more libertarian-leaning conservative folks, than the same down South. However, and disappointingly, I read that the socio-political climate is changing in Idaho, particularly in Boise, with more "progressives" around. I'm sure Boise still isn't the "belly of the beast" as California is, but it could be in less than a few years.

Hey, great job! I moved away 4 years ago and planning to move back. Kinda waiting for the housing market to correct a bit. I was on crutches for a year and they are very few handicap spots and they are NEVER convenient and sometimes they are hidden and sometimes people / store owners use the spot for their business. God help you if you bring it up to the store owner. This one is tough.
    Some of my data:
    - Boise is a LONG way from anywhere.
    - lots of people are moving to Boise.
    - finding a house with a yard is incredibly difficult. This one is craZy given all the land in the Wild West!
    - Boise is the extreme of All seasons.
    - Weather inversion in January is very difficult if you have respiratory issues.
    - If you require access to handicap services, best of luck. Handicap access is limited, it’s never convenient , sometimes a handicap parking spot is hidden or the store owner is using the spot to wash bikes and spray your car because the store owner is upset that you are using their spot.
+ boise can be 108 degrees and as soon as the sun goes down it’s paradise.
+ every season offers different and amazing activities. This one is HUGE. So much to do no matter the season.
+ Some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
    + Green belt
+ best french fries you will ever eat.
+ Boise River has something to offer in all four seasons.

@@livinginidaho Fairhope Alabama. Short story. I put my Boise property on the market with the intent on moving closer to the foot hills. I knew it was risky, in that I might create a homeless situation. I sold this property for a hefty profit and got lucky and put a property in Hidden Springs under contract. Turns out the property fleas actually in Cartwright Ranch and the light pollution was brutal and I backed out of the contract. At the last minute I found the most perfect house through a friend. The house was not on the market yet and the seller and I used the title company to handle everything. Until we closed the seller agreed to one of my conditions to rent the property until we closed.
There were a couple of issues in the inspection, but seller agreed to fix several items which is normal. Other than there was a smell in the pantry, apparently something busted at some point, I was beyond excited.
After living in the house for a few days I noticed another smell coming from the fire place. One night the smell became too much and as I inspected I noticed the fireplace black paint was melting. The chemical smell was beyond toxic and I could taste it. At 1 am the particulate matter (smell) was everywhere in the house. I have reactive airway disease and had to vacate. I found a hotel and the next morning I had to go to the hospital and ended up staying for a bit.
The particulate matter destroyed everything I owned except for a few items. I stayed in the hotel for about a month trying to find a house but eventually gave up. With all my stinky stuff I loaded everything into a moving truck in the hotel parking lot. A buddy told me to move to Fairhope and I got on Zillow and located an awesome new house for cheap in a gated community. I owned the house for 26 months and almost doubled my money.
Life lesson #239 - selling a home in a craZy market is risky, especially when California peeps drove the market to insane levels paying craZy money for a ranch.
It was great being near the beach. The value that Boise brings is its multidimensional aspects. Living near the beach is more single dimensional. This became more apparent over time.
Sorry for the long comment, but hopefully someone will read this and not try to play in a housing market when everything is craZy. Fairhope is an awesome place. The people are amazing. I’m an outdoor person with snowshoes, mountain bikes, tents, etc. Idaho rocks and especially Boise!!

Even in places like the Boise Towne Square Mall which is technically a gun free zone, most of the time there are people in the mall carrying a firearm. Arizona's dry heat is definitely a world apart from Tennessee's more humid climate.
In contrast, Idaho, especially in the Boise area, has a much drier climate, more similar to Arizona, though not quite as extreme. This dry air can be a lot gentler on the joints for many people. Plus, Idaho's weather is generally milder, so you might find it more comfortable overall. Hope this helps, and feel free to ask if you have more questions!

The biggest retirement concern is taxes. The trifecta: income, sales, and property taxes. Is social security taxed by Idaho? It is by CA as income… Medical comparisons are: cost and availability of services typically needed by retirement aged folks. I imagine they are mostly available only in the larger cities. Thanks again!

So i was thinking about going to Boise for a contracted job. My husband and i are Floridians. We traveled from Midwest to the West Coast but never experienced Idaho. We currently live in Phoenix AZ and we don't like the heat and hard to get used to the air pollution here. My husband has asthma and allergies. AZ is killing him with his allergies. What would you say about someone that has allergies being in Boise? My husband and I love the outdoors and hiked many places. Im more of a water baby than he is 😂 and love water activity. We not concern about snow since we experienced worse snow before. We lived in Lubbock TX and population there was 264,000 in 2022. We loved the vibe because coming from Florida everyone in Lubbock TX are very nice people (NE ppl are even nicer lol). My biggest concern is we are a mix couple so would it be difficult for my husband (African American) to get a job in Boise? We not sure. Yes its sad we have to be concern about this.

I don't see why it wouldn't be a problem in him finding a job. W/that said, I do have to mention, my family and I have been victims of racism when we traveled north of Idaho. this was back in 1990-2002 time. not sure how much has changed since then but I would just be aware of that. other than that Idaho is amazing and the people are wonderful in the Nampa, caldwell, meridian and boise area. good luck!!

I've lived around Phoenix for over 45 years and watched it grow, but instead of centralizing services and planning ahead, for the last half of my years here PHX has had to try to play catch up with freeways, smart expansion, infrastructure, and services, and for me it is always too little too late. I still love the state, but city management in general has been poor and there isn't as nice of a community feel as their once was. Smaller towns like Gilbert and further outlying towns are trying, but you miss on the history and such.
But as I type I am sitting a block away from Hyde Park, have enjoyed being able to walk everywhere - from Camel's Back to downtown shops and stops, to the river walk, with almost EVERYONE I pass saying hello, striking up conversations, and willing to share their favorite places around here. And you have a respectful blend of politics, but within an open community, which even as a conservative Republican (NOT a MAGA RINO) I am loving. Just strong community of 'we the people' living together well from what I have seen. I am sure more rural places lean right, but as we explore I haven't had to see the uglier side of that yet. Or the over-spent, handout entitlement going to far left can bring.
It is expensive for housing, but I think folks don't realize that every place that people want to live (Like beach towns and cities) drive prices up. Sucks, but that is how supply and demand, with capitalism works.
