I actually liked Kelly Thompson's "Black Widow" and loved her "Mr. & Mrs. X", so I thinks she's hit or miss. I'll give her a chance on "Scarlett" for sure. Dan Watters I know nothing about, *but* everything from Skybound has been good so far. I'm willing to give it a shot as well.
In my honest opinion. It really depends on which version of Kelly Thompson we're getting. Back in 2017, she wrote a fantastic Ghostbusters mini series called "Answer the Call" for IDW that wasn't woke at all. Then in 2020 she wrote an awesome Black Widow series. If people are bashing her because of Captain Marvel and Birds of Prey, I would ask them if they really think there isn't heavy editorial interference on these books. Especially Captain Marvel. No matter who writes this character they have to adhere to Marvel's crazy editorial control. I'm looking forward to Scarlett. I believe Kelly will do a good job because she's writing outside of the Big Two.
I enjoyed Kelly Thompson's Black Cloak. Personally I think we need to be a little be more positive because this isn't Marvel or DC. If The Energon Universe is Robert Kirkman's baby I doubt he would want to see it fail.
Really enjoyed Kelly Thompson's Mr. & Mrs. X, her Black Widow, her Jessica Jones: Purple Daughter and, in several arcs, her Captain Marvel, so gonna get her Scarlet. Think she'll get it right or, in the least, she'll do enough right things.
I don’t know who these two other creators are. I know I’m blocked by the broad on X and I’ve never interacted with her. So obviously a block bot. But, I question the amount of spinoffs that are coming to the Energon Universe. Seems like the respective series should have at least a solid year under their belts before more spinoffs. They’re watering down the IPs before the soup is done. Also, already blocking customers isn’t engendering any goodwill.
I enjoyed her Captain Marvel and Kelly Thompson is doing a great job on Birds of Prey and her two indie series, "The Cull" and "The Black Cloak" display her wide range as a writer. Dan Watters is hit and miss with me but what I admire about him is his ability to think outside the box. He often has unique ideas and subplots in his stories albeit with, at times, inconsistent pacing. The Energon Universe is in very good hands.
Janitor Larry from the GI Joe recruitment office hears a strange voice emanating from the microwave oven, Hot Pocket. Together, the human and Autobot must team up to save the Earth from clutter in the break room.
I see this as yet another consequence of the industry's difficulty in attracting new talent. Awful choices, to be sure, but who else were they going to get? There are other good creators, but a lot of them are already committed to other projects. Skybound could have tried harder to keep DWJ around though
This is the 'Netflix Experience's. You get 2 seasons of good stuff, the 3rd season brings the SJW garbage. He-man was the exception, it was garbage from the start.
Having seen the preview pages for both comics I am willing to try them. Considering Kirkman no doubt put a gargantuan amount of effort and money into this licensing deal with Hasbro, I suspect that he will be keeping eyes on the creatives working on tie in material along with the salaes numbers. I might be optimistic but you are right that we must gaur are expectation on the upcoming Energon Universe mini series and Layman's take over of Transformers.
This is why I didn't commit to the Energon stuff, despite having a complete run of Marvel's GI Joe and Transformers from back in the day. They always bring their A-game at first, but then the books start sucking quickly after that.
I will still maintain positivity for now but we all knew this wouldn't last forever.. the whole point of all this moving to skybound was to get back to putting out good books if they don't watch it before they know it it's just going to be IDW all over again.
But Scarlett might focus on zartan and firefly who are both tied to snake-eyes/storm shadow training history in Japan...and destroy might focus on building extensive enterprises the investment face of cobra....
Definitely won't be picking Scarlett/Destro series. Not with those writers. I'll be keeping an eye these bad hires by Kirkman's people slowly sprinkling in to possibly infect the main G.I. Joe title & I have to ditch it before it becomes other IDW-like fiasco.
I agree with Kelly Thompson, but Dan Watters will probably do a good job. Watters and Ram V both have indie titles out right now that interconnect and they are really good. He's a writer that has mostly been relegated to back up stories and this is probably his big break. I bet he'll bring the heat. As for Thompson, the only thing she ever wrote that I enjoyed was her small Deadpool run. It was cute, harmless, and even had a pretty funny set-up.
Just like how in Mortal Kombat you have the two most popular characters in Scorpion and Sub-Zero. You have for GI Joe Snake eyes and Storm Shadow, which if I'm also being honest, they are way more popular than Cobra Commander and Duke who are basically the Megatron and Optimus Prime for GI Joe.

Wow, the negativity is off the charts here. Thompson's Black Widow series showed she could easily pull off a Scarlett/Gi Joe book. And considering the Joe books have only had less than 10 issues released over the course of three different books, we don't even know if the current books will stick the landing with their opening arcs. Slow roll the doom and gloom everybody.
PSA: Let me read a couple of tea leaves. In seven power points: 1) Inside of 6-issues Scarlett will self-identify as “Bi” or “Lesbian.” If it even takes that long. I’ll pass. 2) Duke: If he winds up coming out as Bi-or Gay…or, has a psychological meltdown and goes into self flagellation over being a Soldier - wouldn’t surprise me. I’ll pass. 3) If the intertwined histories of Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are turned into a ‘nicer gentler assassin’?? I’ll pass. 4) Destro: By Dan Waters? We’ll see. If it becomes a thesis in self-analyzation on why I..Destro exist..? I’ll pass. 5) Ben Abernathy..? HA!! That is an Editorial joke Hire…right Mr. Robert Kirkman. Riiight..?? I’ll pass. 6) The juggernaut that started as the “Energon Universe”, that Wes mentioned? Kiss it good bye. If they got 8-12 issues out of it, great - it’s a maxi series. It is over. I’ll pass. 7) How long? Say 6-8 issues into their limited contract for hire, before Mr. Kirkman brings the next phase of Energon Universe Writers. The stellar crowd over at DC that had the most horrible sales data in 30 years. Here I’ll mention them all: 1) Leah Williams 2) Steve Orlando 3) Meghan Fitzmartin 4) Toni Howard 5) Danny Lore 6) Steve Orlando 7) Vita Ayala 8) Leah Thompson I’ll pass. I’m sure I missed a few, but these eight will do. If any of these so-called Comic Book Writers come to the Image Energon Universe. Consider it - OVER. - Thank you.
That's sad. They will find out real quick on how to kill a good thing. Unfortunately there are only 2 writers worth a damn in all of comics right now. We don't need women writing gi joe. No joe fan from the 80s knows a single female that was a fan of gi joe. They like barbie
Its worth taking a second to remember that the reason people are getting upset is because these comics are so good, right now. Im bummed that Johnson is stepping off, but I knew it was coming. Hes never worked on anything for more than 12 issues. Just wish it wasnt happening so soon. I can understand the short term contracts. You want the best you can afford, but licensed properties are such a crapshoot, it doesnt make sense to lock into contracts you might not be able to sustain. That said, theyve done such a good job launching these comics that any change is going to cause disappointment and anxiety. I would have loved to get DWJ for 30 or 40 issues, but that was never going to happen. I plan on giving Energon a fair shake before deciding whether or not to stick with it. Skybound has usually been a safe bet for me.
I ve only read Thompson's Black Widow run but that was surprisingly good. It's definitely better than anything Black Widow related that has come out since then. So Black Widow and Scarlet are similar characters.
I don't understand this disconnect Kirkman seems to have between what is clearly exciting and engaging about the Energon Universe versus this ho -hum business as usual approach to the kind of people he's hiring for Phase 2 (or Phase 1.0). You can't have been a pro for as long as Kirkman has been, and think fans are going to rush to read Kelly Thompson on Scarlett, or Dan Waters on anything. It's the lack of enthusiasm coming from the creators and publishers that are among the main factors hurting sales. They keep hiring women who don't care about this stuff to work on it, or men who will just go along to get along with people on Twitter to steer hot properties into a ditch because they're afraid of offending someone.
Having never read G I Joe or Transformers, all these characters were new to me in their comic form. So I've been enjoying Void Rivals, Transformers and the spin-offs so far. I do hope the excitement for something different isn't ruined. Not knowing the origins of these characters helps somewhat, but having been reading comics for a long, long time, I think I will know if something isn't right, hope you're wrong Wes, but we will see....
I have the Transformers trades in my wish list. For volume 1 and 2. Optimus doesn't act like my Optimus though, I can't picture Peter Cullen Optimus being so savage. Definitely not the kids version of the character.
As an old school comic reader and Transformers fan, I have enjoyed and supported the Energon universes. However I am already nervous about the talent changes and the new Transformers artist starting issue 7! The sales of these books justify top tier talent. I don't believe they will get this chance and this amount of goodwill again. If they mess this up, they can't just reboot it like Marvel in a year! It's now or never don't mess it up!!
At first I was in disagreement with Wes about the new writers because I’m hoping they’ll do great as they are both decent writers, but now I’m thinking if Joshua Williamson is killing it on 2 mini series why not have him write the other 2. He’ll be writing 20 something issues that all have the same passion and creativity. We will have to wait and see. I’m staying positive for now.
Cassandra Cain was mute but only because she was her father's experiment to make a weapon. Part of that was not teaching her language/not letting her try to speak. (He taught her body language). So she has since learned to speak and it would actually make sense that with that and being around people she learns to trust she would become extremely chatty. Annoyingly so I would think.
I personally like Kelly Thompson's writing, and I think with Kirkman overseeing these books that they will be great. Joshua Williamson's Duke & Cobra Commander are light-years better than his big two work. So I am optimistic, but I completely agree they should lock down some strong long term talent.
Ram V should never touch a keyboard ever again. He's a terrible writer who clearly has no clue about the characters he's writing. The guy should just find another job, honestly.
Yes, when I saw Kelly Thompson's name for the Scarlet mini series, I also cringed a bit. Here's hoping she can reign in her feminism and woke b.s. but I'm not holding my breath.
"Kelly Thompson is the best female writer in comic books right now"??? She doesn't have much competition, but saying she's "the best" implies that she's actually good at least sometimes, and I honestly don't think so. G. Willow Wilson can be good if she wants to, she has some good ideas from time to time, but she constantly lets her politics mess up her work, so she's not the best either. I would say "the best female writer in comics right now" is Rainbow Rowell, I haven't read all of her stuff but I liked what I did read (and I even feel weird for saying that since she's a writer of young adult novels), I got the impression that she actually respects the medium and takes the job seriously. The back-up story she wrote for ASM a while back is one of the best Spider-Man comics I've read in the last 3 years.
You 'guess' Scarlett makes sense? She was one half of the leads in vintage Hama comic (Snake Eyes and Scarlett) and thus a firm narrative focus. She isn't a b list Joe character or less. She's one of the most important characters in all of the GI Joe IP. Don't underplay her.
New reader, but don't buy anything new. If you done with the Big Two? Ever tried some older 2000 AD? Lots of grim sci-fi for sure and they do some dark fantasy.
Cassandra Cain hasn't been Orphan for almost a decade, and she's had a ton of character development in that time that clearly establishes her as someone who is now longer primarily non-verbal. You shouldn't offer criticisms on subjects you mnow nothing about
Robert Kirkman has my confidence. His career speaks for itself. You can't say it's a mistake till you read it. Not saying it will be good, it's too early either way.
Aren't you a bit too negative, Wes? You shouldn't jump to conclusions until thes 2 series come out! Who knows, MAYBE they might be good given how well the earlier 2 GI Joe books have sold. Besides, these 2 books are only in the GI Joe corner of the Energon Universe and will not, if at all, impact the Transformers side of things!
Is anyone surprised? This is how these big launches go, they start out with A listers and then bring in the cheap losers around issue 6-12 to destroy everything.

I guess I’ll always have my memories of walking up to Hooks drug store with a five in my pocket. Buying 2 or 3 comic books off the spinner rack. A couple of Chic O Stix, and still have a pocket full of change.
Knew the magic wouldn't last.
I knew it was too good to be true, I knew it would go to crap, it’s modern comics after all.
PSA: Let me read a couple of tea leaves.
In seven power points:
1) Inside of 6-issues Scarlett will self-identify as “Bi” or “Lesbian.” If it even takes that long.
Here I’ll mention them all:
1) Leah Williams
2) Steve Orlando
3) Meghan Fitzmartin
4) Toni Howard
5) Danny Lore
6) Steve Orlando
7) Vita Ayala
8) Leah Thompson
I’ll pass.
I’m sure I missed a few, but these eight will do.
If any of these so-called Comic Book Writers come to the Image Energon Universe.
Consider it - OVER.
- Thank you.
Manga books don't change the writer or artist every few months. Have we been spoiled by a superior product?
yeah why is that? why don’t they change but this silly american comic industry changes writers and artists every 6 issues
I have been reading all the new G.I. Joe comics & confirm Snake Eyes is talking now. They made a clone of him which can talk
I have a feeling that won't last much longer.
Skybound should bring back IDW’s GI JOE: Cobra by Mike Costa and Christos Gage. A great modern reinterpretation of GI JOE.
Got dang it! I hope they can correct this.
Thanks for the info Wes!
As soon and heard new writers rolled eyes can't even get a full b year until ruining it
As an old school comic reader and Transformers fan, I have enjoyed and supported the Energon universes.
I’m staying positive for now.
love nikola cizmesijas cover for destro🔥
Time to bail and run.😊
This is all well and good but when will Ben bring in Megan Fitzmartin an Riley Rossmo to turn Snake Eyes into a mincing gay man?
Cassandra Cain was mute but only because she was her father's experiment to make a weapon. Part of that was not teaching her language/not letting her try to speak. (He taught her body language). So she has since learned to speak and it would actually make sense that with that and being around people she learns to trust she would become extremely chatty. Annoyingly so I would think.
Awesome work mate
The Energon Universe has been fantastic, but this seems like a bad sign, I hope Kirkman takes a hands-on approach to keep the same quality of books.
The best female writer is Stephanie Phillips… her grim series is pretty fun and I enjoyed the minis she has done at marvel
I hope it doesn't take bad down turn. That there will be quality control.
Thus is it. It's over!
I really enjoyed Thompson's run on BLACK WIDOW. I think she's a good choice,.
I personally like Kelly Thompson's writing, and I think with Kirkman overseeing these books that they will be great. Joshua Williamson's Duke & Cobra Commander are light-years better than his big two work. So I am optimistic, but I completely agree they should lock down some strong long term talent.
Who else are they gonna put, if there is no new talent?
I'll check out the first issue for both series and then make up my mind.
I’m torn. I swore to never buy a Kelly Thompson book, but Scarlet is a personal favorite. I guess I’ll try issue 1 and go from there.
I'll guess I hold off with getting into the Energon Universe.
I will not read Kelly Thompson GI Joe. No way no how. Scarlett will be in the $1 bin.
She can keep her pronouns on her twitter bio
Joe needs to stay away from the worn out Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow story line.
This is why I stopped buying comics altogether. They're all fcking woke and trash.
Not saying it will be good, it's too early either way.
at least skybound's transformers comics are growing strong.
Aren't you a bit too negative, Wes? You shouldn't jump to conclusions until thes 2 series come out!
Who knows, MAYBE they might be good given how well the earlier 2 GI Joe books have sold. Besides, these 2 books are only in the GI Joe corner of the Energon Universe and will not, if at all, impact the Transformers side of things!
i hope they put magdalene vissaggio on snake eyes
