This is everything I wanted in a New Gods book. A small bit of pretentiousness in the beginning to make it feel grandiose, killer art, great characterization, and a simple, yet engaging plot. Please let this run stay at this level of quality, and let it cook for a few years!
I find it odd that people sleep on Ram v. Say what you will but at least the dude swings for the fences and give us something we didn’t ask for but something that we NEED to see. What’s great about this new gods so far is it is familiar but he’s taking influences outside of Kirby to do something wild and interesting. I’ll always check out Ram v. His one hand/six fingers collab with Dan waters was fantastic with the weirdest twist I didn’t see coming.
well thank goodness w may have a winner.... good vid wes... im a Hard body kirby advocate but ram V is low key one of these talents we can rock with ... kudos to all
Besides some of the try-hard narrative and context errors suggesting no editorial oversight, it’s a good start. If you go in without knowing the New Gods Foundation established by Jack Kirby or suspending what you know about it, it has some good scenes with a good set up. I really enjoy the artist’s work so I hope we get some cool action worthy of his time and talents.
@@ComicsForLife2023 No need to be a dick. Yes, I did love it. It was a comic I expected nothing from and ended up being blown away by. Great art, great writing, and a very interesting set up. You're allowed to not like it, but guess what, I'm allowed to like it. It's one of the stronger single issues I've read this year. In the future maybe you should try " hey I'm glad you liked it, glad to have a new fan of the new gods on board. May I suggest checking out the Walt Simonson run from back in the 90's if you enjoyed this". See how much more pleasant that sounds? Now go jump in a frozen lake asshole.
I like that, after what happened in the DC All In Special, Highfather told Orion to find the mysterious child on Earth and kill him, resulting in Orion to tell Scott (who just had a daughter named Olivia with Barda, which is nice) to make sure that he’ll find the child before he does because he knows that Scott can save the child from himself. Overall, this comic is good and off to a great start.
Honestly, if you want to start with a new gods series, I highly recommend picking up Jack Kirbys' "Fourth World Omnibus" and then John Byrnes "Fourth World Omnibus" followed by Walt Simonsons "Orion".
I agree that this issue was very good. I like the art, and I think V captured the voices of the characters well. New Gods iis a concept I've been find of for decades, but nobody's done anything worth .mentioning with them since Walt Somonson's run on Orion. I read the scene with Lightray and High Father differently. To me, it seemed that High Father wanted to spare Lightray from a task he knew was going to be horrible. If you want a baby murdered, Lightray is not your guy. First rule of command: never give an order that won't be obeyed. Orion is the trashman. Every dirty job gets thrown his way. I did enjoy Orion's bit of malicious compliance, and it set up a situation that can really showcase what Orion and Mister Miracle can do. Really hoping for a return to form for Scott. Great review. Thanks.
In kingdom come, their daughter's name was Avia, they should have stuck with that Metron is Highfathers son?!?! When was that revealed. His origin was supposed to be vague and mysterious.
Yeah, Ram V comics can be hit or miss, sometimes he drags things out and can be overly fluffed, but at least he is a real writer who puts thought into his work and, get this, he actually reads (a lot), has unique, real world experiences, and even does research. Rare Flavours, The Vigil, and Dawnrunner were all pretty good. I picked up The New Gods, which i know nothing about, but am looking forward to seeing unfold.
It was a very good first issue. Paints the New Gods in the way they should be. I am not a huge fan, but I could get behind this and tell people to pick it up. Rock solid artwork. It is a epic story worthy of the New Gods too. And it goes without saying Orion is a bad ass, but don't tell Lobo that. Very good moral dilemma too...would you kill hitler as a baby scenario...in a way. So definitely get this one for certain. WTF20.
@@incubustimelord5947 It at least sounds like that, which is currently enough for me to skip this one. May revisit my decision if it turns out differently, but High Father going immediately to „kill that baby“ doesn’t vibe well with me, not at all.
Ram V has a modicum of talent and I liked his work on Catwoman and Venom but he pretty much blew out his credibility with me when he put that stupid tree lady from Disney’s Pocahontas into his Swamp Thing because he thought it was a real legend.
@cicolasnage5684 so your saying he never self inserted by turning swamp thing into an Indiian character as soon as he got on that title a few years ago?
@@theragoooverlord5021 the swamp thing everybody likes and remembers from the Alan Moore run is the second one anyway……..are……are we really doing this? Like Alexander Olsen was the first one that nobody remembers anyway……….
I feel like Ram V has been exposed as doing basically the same tropes over and over. He basically just puts an Indian spin on everything he writes. Even in new gods on twitter he was bragging about putting in things from Indian culture into his books. Sorry but when that’s the only thing you can do then you become boring.
I don't like Ram V. He is a member of the cult of the soy and the woke. This comic book story is a good example of why not all change is a change for the better. I don't collect DC or Marvel anymore because of stuff like this. This is a New Gods comic book but this not my New Gods. I don't think that Jack Kirby would like the way that his characters are being made to look. Highfather is the opposite of Darkseid. He shouldn't be just as corrupted. Otherwise, his existence as the light and the order to Darkseid's chaos and darkness is pointless. There is no consistency, no continuity, no respect for the lore of the Fourth World characters. The original canon source material of the pre-Crisis New Gods from the 1970s should be set in stone. The Source split apart an ancient world and from that destruction came the creation of Apokolips and New Genesis. That is sacrosanct. Darkseid should be a mustache twirling cartoon super-villain and Highfather should be a saint and an innocent who did nothing wrong. Anything deviating from this is heresy. Written by people who either don't know about the New Gods, or who do actually know, but for some strange reason never show that they do, or who just don't give a damn about the New Gods and write whatever they want. This is bad fan fiction.
@@cicolasnage5684he's pretentious and a DEI hire who cares more about "new readers" more than the existing fan base. The concept sounds cool...in an alternate universe...the comment above is right about Highfather's character assasination.

I'm just glad to see the new gods having a new ongoing. The new gods are my favorite part of the DCU, and they deserve more spotlight.
Is this an ongoing or a miniseries?
@KeithCambra-cg1lx ongoing, Ram V said in an interview that they have at least 3 years planned out.
This was solid. Dc is on it right now.

Not a very big New Gods fan and I loved this book. Loved it so much that it ended so abruptly and wanted more.
Everything I know about the New Gods comes from Justice League Unlimited. I have a very basic knowledge of them and even I loved this comic.
yOU DO?! in one issue you already 'love' it? I recommend you pick up Walter Simonson's run from back in the 90s. This new here reads like shit to me.

I love Jack Kirby concept of New gods. I will give it a try. the art seems good too. Thanks for your review!👏🤪👏
I am a Jack Kirby snob and I liked this book.
Best. Endorsement. Ever.
I’m snobbier. I found it tolerable 😂
Very glad you thoroughly enjoyed a Ram V book. I can't wait to see what happens with Olivia - she's gonna be one powerful kid!
I do like the art a lot. It does remind me of Nick Dragotta.
Also Maxwell Lord is Back?
In kingdom come, their daughter's name was Avia, they should have stuck with that
Metron is Highfathers son?!?! When was that revealed. His origin was supposed to be vague and mysterious.
I allways like seeing high fathers being somewhat corrupt like Darkseid they share that trait atleast as brothers
i never new gods swears a lot and speaks like gen z new yorkers? such creative writing right there.
Feeling hopeful for DC comics and studios in 2025 🔥🔥
New Gods just the original 70's Kirby version I like. This book don't grabbed my atention just like Justice League Unlimited from Mark Waid.

The Japanese have a monopoly on sales in Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, as their territory does not allow any US Comics.

Finally someone taking inspiration from Indian culture
Sorry, but I‘m not really into High Father becoming the Darkseid replacement and this story sounds like that to me.

Check out Walt Simonson's Orion series. The only non Jack Kirby writer/artist to do it right and to do it epic.
Hmm, sounds good but I’ve never been interested in New Gods.
Yea the only Vam V I’ve liked was the Justice League Dark run, but he wasn’t the only writer on that.
The quietest return
everything that happend in the tom king series was a sort maybe anit-life illusion type thing, so no he doesn't have a son

Well New Gods will not be a side piece anymore. They should really get into new genesis.
If someone gave me a free copy, I’d read it. If the series can go 5 good issues, I’ll buy it
An inspiration from Lord Krishna's birth, I see. Ram (another name for Krishna) V is taking inspiration from Indian mythology. Cool.
