  • Hi everyone! In this video I go over some of the things that I do almost every time that I tie dye, but never show on camera. A few of these things some of you have asked me to cover, and some I thought just might be helpful and give you a better look at the things I use for my tie dye projects.
    First we're going to cover Soda Ash and exactly how I use it. Second I am going to show you up close the slipknot that I make everytime I use sinew to tie my material. Third I am going to show you how I make my aluminum foil borders for Ice Dye projects, and last but not least we're going to make some thick water & thick water dye. Awesome stuff. I hope you all find this video useful and entertaining and thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the tips Riah! I will share a couple of mine. I use aluminum foil also for wrapping my ice dye and use a strip of duct tape along the length of one edge to fold it up. It adds a bit more stability but still flexible. I also use clothes pins on the outer edges attached to the rack to hold it in place if more stability is needed. Love your videos. Thank you for sharing all your beautiful work and tricks of the trade♥️

    I don't have a washer with spin cycle and have heard you can actually tear the material or mess up the stitching so I made a contraption where I put my material into a paint strainer bag and hook it up to my Dewalt drill and spin dry that way. It took me a while to figure out how to make it work right because of the speed wobble but eventually figured it out. I really like the work you do and gotta say it's definitely top notch next level.

    Questions:
    1. Is the purpose of the foil to contain the ice?
    2. If you make the thick water a little thicker, is it more effective at reflecting the adjacent color?
    And alternatively, if you get your thick water too thick, can you thin with more warm water or is it toast?
    3. Where and why would you need thick water dye? (Feel free to point me to one of your videos if that’s easier!)
    I’m learning so much. I’ve watched about 20 videos but afraid to actually DO something! You just seem so fearless! Thank you!

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1.yes ☺️
      2. Thicker doesn’t necessarily mean better…it will be a lot harder to get out of the bottle and if it is too thick it’s toast because water won’t be able to mix with it after it’s already been thickened.
      3. Thick water for me would be for small outlines of a design so if I wanted to outline say a Mickey head I would do a small line of it on the outside of the sinew line and really push it down into the fabric and do it on both sides…basically it helps not spread as much…but it will spread a little still. I hope that helps!

We use "Thick-it" as a thickening agent for people with swallowing difficulties, it's all food grade just like the alginate, but a lot cheaper. Just a thought. Do you have a video on rinsing dye out of fabrics before they go into the wash? It takes me a very long time to rinse to the point where the water runs almost clear. With fabrics like tee shirts the wringing out during rinsing causes the shirts to lose their shapes, especially around the neck lines.

    • @RiahsTieDye

    Hey there, I've been watching alot of your videos and have learned so much. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your beautiful artwork. It's a joy to watch your videos. I am part of several groups that discuss tie dyes and share pictures on facebook. I've been seeing lots of mandala tapestries with little white dots on each of the sections. They are too small to be clamped. I wonder if they are rare earth magnets on each side for that strong resist. Have you ever tried magnets for resist spots? I'm wondering if it works, before i go spend money on them.

    When you do your more intricate tyes like the split petal mandala or honeycomb do you use thickened dye for them or just regular? I have a couple shirts tied up with my first try at those patterns and the fabric seems so tight I'm worried thickened dye won't penetrate but I'm also worried regular dye will ruin the color splits. Before I ruin these do you have any advice? Thank you!

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thickened dye works perfectly! It seems like it won’t get in there but it will and if it’s thick it will help prevent bleeding 😊

    Thank you for your great videos.
    Lately I’ve had trouble with my tie dye bleeding after several washes. I pre soak with soda ash, let the product batch for 48 hours, rinse, then wash three times with synthropol. I’ve started adding color safe bleach. Most of the time it works, but some towels won’t stop bleeding.
    Do you have any suggestions?

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I would try soaking it in super hot water with dawn dish soap for a half hour before washing. That normally helps also if they have any polyester in them it will bleed some.

    I'm looking to do my first tie dye. I see two different ratios of soda ash to water. I'd like to not waste it by using a cup per gallon if a half cup will work. Do you still recommend 1/2 cup per gallon?

    • @RiahsTieDye

    Is there a brand of fine tips that’s better than another? I’m a beginner using Tulip tie dyes until I get better. Can the sodium alginate be used with the Tulip dyes?

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thank you for your question. So as far as the needle tips go I haven’t found any difference in pretty much all of them and you can definitely use the sodium alginate with Tulip dyes. The only difference with Tulip dyes is you don’t need to add soda ash to your material because Tulip dyes have soda ash mixed in with the dye powder. But you still can soak in soda ash if you want to. Hope this helps😊💙

    Can you reuse the rubber bands and tinfoil strips if you rinse them well or is there a chance for dye transfer?
    Have you ever done immersion dyeing or dye painting?
    Thanks for everything.

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well thank you my friend. I try🤣. As far as the rubber bands I always reuse them. I just rinse them off after I take them off and let them dry out. The aluminum foil I don’t just because most projects are different shapes but simple spirals you probably could. And as far as immersion dyeing and and dye painting I haven’t but I will be soon😊💜

    • @RiahsTieDye

      Hi and thank you for your question! Thick water is mainly used on a space that you want to keep white and it helps prevent other colored dye from bleeding in that space as much as if you weren’t using any thick water at all. I hope this help😊💜

    I'm curious, I cannot find soda ash locally in the supermarket detergent aisle, is there an alternative? I assume its a mordant‽ Is alum, vinegar or salt a decent stand in? Also, for the thick water, ever experimented with gelatin or even corn starch as an easy to obtain thickener? Just wondering about things already in my pantry. Thanks so much, you're adorably entertaining 😁

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really depends on what kind of dye you are using. Most tie dye kits have soda ash mixed in with the dye. If you are using the dyes like what I use then soda ash is necessary and none of the stuff listed is going to help or work.

    I used Xanthum gum (as opposed to sodium algenate) as a water thickener and it worked beautifully! I used it for 2 (reverse) tie dye T’s with a spiral design: one I bleached and dyed 1/3 of the tied shirt, and one I bleached and dyed the whole shirt in sections. They all came out amazing! (I’d send you a picture of them if I knew how 🙃) I have, however, been struggling with the sinew. It keeps fraying on me and I end up having to snip the frays and reinforce the ties with rubber bands. Any suggestions? Thanks for all your wonderfully enlightening videos and tips! 👍🏼👍🏼

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tricia. So I’ve actually kept my thick water for about a month before and still worked fine after a little shake. As far as the SA I would definitely soak your material for at least 20 minutes. If you add it to the the thick water it’s only going to get on areas where you use your thick water so the dyed areas won’t hold there color when you wash. I hope this helps😊

    When mixxing dye with thicc water is that something you would do every time you tye dye? If not what’s the purpose mixxing dye with thicc water

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi and thank you for your question. So sometimes you want your dyes to mix together to create other colors or I should say blend together where they meet. Sometimes you don’t. A perfect example would be eyes. Say you’re Tie dyeing a jack skellington. You want the black in the eyes and not seeping out into the shirt where his face would be. Thick dye helps tremendously with that. I hope this helps😊

    Hi Riah! Great tips! What is the difference between sodium alginate and urea? Do you ever use Urea?

    • @RiahsTieDye
      @RiahsTieDye  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I never have used Urea but I believe it’s more for keeping the colors brighter and so they penetrate deeper into the fabric. Sodium alginate is a thickener so when added to water it makes it so your liquid won’t spread or “bleed” as much. In a sense keeping the dye exactly where you want it. I will be purchasing some urea soon because I’m curious as well and definitely doing a video on it when I know more. Hope this helps😊💜

      I always use urea! :) I add it to the dye solutions for squirt bottles whenever I'm dissolving the dyes (per Dharma Trading's instructions for the Procion Fiber Reactive ones). Basically what it does is it helps the fabric stay moist while it reacts/processes, also helps the dye bind since it's an electron reducing agent, so your colors will be more vibrant & washfast! It also helps you paste up the dye, dissolve it, and make sure it stays dissolved in the solutions even before you dye :)
