  • I started 2022 with a solo ice fishing outing to the Fishing Highway 24 in Cariboo BC for some rainbow trout! I used a VMC Mongo jig tipped with tiny pieces of shrimp for these fish.

    Terrific video as always Rod! I have a bit of advice when scouting a new lake. Drill your first hole 20 paces from shore (or relatively shallow), and then walk out in a straight line drilling holes every 20 paces until you have 3 or 4 consecutive holes. These holes should represent consecutively deeper depths at which fish may be holding. Fish the first hole for 15-20 min and move to the next hole until you see activity. If there is absolutely no activity then I'll repeat the same procedure in a different part of the lake. Finding where the fish are is a guessing game especially when ice fishing, but this strategy may help to find them faster.

    I live in the Cariboo. I usually fish with a tent so I can watch the fish and how they react. Always seems like just hanging a shrimp with a hook works best. But I've seen fish go nuts when you first drop the hook down into the water. So maybe slight jigging and then let it sit works best. Been experimenting with flies for hardwater season... not as good as shrimp but I've found that a green, balanced leech works alright. Nice video! Makes me want to go out again!

      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah the trout behaviours under the ice are so unpredictable and fascinating (and frustrating at times haha). I love being able to see it through the holes, best part of ice fishing.

    • @fillup86
      @fillup86 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FishingwithRod Yes definitely. Do you think it's worth making note of certain behaviours? I went fishing with someone the other day. Nobody on the lake had really any luck. Then we moved to one spot and caught two fish. Then, as quickly as it started, everything stopped again. Frustrating for sure lol

      I think it's totally worth noting all the findings plus water temperature, weather, etc from each fishing outing so you can develop some kind of a pattern over time. 🙂

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't be overwhelmed by what you saw me carrying in the video. You really don't need much to start ice fishing. Ice rods and reels, some terminal tackle, an auger/drill and a scoop are pretty much what you need if you just want to try it out. That's all I had at the beginning too. The depth sounder/fish finder makes it a lot easier. I also use that same one in the video in my boat, so it's not just for ice fishing. A tent is a luxury, to keep you warm and a dark area where you can see the fish through the holes. Start with little, then build it up if you like it a lot.

      @@FishingwithRod I still fish with basic gear today because i enjoy finding fish with my knowledge and skill, for me the fishfinder is something clueless people use to hide the lack of knowledge. i dont use a fishfinder out on the sea either. just a handheld gps. it probably sounds very cocky to many people but as kong as it works i am happy with it.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, use whatever keeps you happy. The sounder is just another tool, a set of eyes below the ice if you'd like to be more efficient.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah it is. I really should have just left it back in the truck because that electric auger has been amazing. It can do over 100 holes in one charge and usually I only end up drilling two or three per day so I don't even recharge the battery for the entire week.

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use Pautzke Bait's Fire Cure (red) to cure my shrimp. Just sprinkle some onto the shrimp in a bowl, and after a little while most of the water will come out from the shrimp while they are being dyed. Drain, and place all the shrimp on some paper towel to dry them until the firmness is what you like. Usually I dry them for a few hours. Thanks for checking out the video. :)

    • @FishingwithRod
      @FishingwithRod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, that is a specific strain of rainbow trout found in BC, called Pennask rainbow trout. They are found in, as the name implied, Pennask Lake. Broods have been collected from the lake to produce stocks for all the lakes like this one I was fishing at. The third fish I kept, with many more spots, is known as a Blackwater rainbow trout. Different physical characteristics, and also different behaviours when hooked on a line. I have a video which talks more about these strains in details:

      The Pennask is definitely most anglers’ favourite around here, because of their look but also how powerful and acrobatic they are. They don’t do well in all of the lakes. If there is a presence of competitors (eg. other species like shiners) then they don’t grow as well.
