Tom King really wants me to believe Selina and the Joker are friends and I'm not buying it. Not that it's not possible, but there's so much in canon working against it (Selina is good friends with Barbara and Harley, who've both been hurt by him, and also loves and respects Bruce, plus the Joker really doesn't have friends?? She loves kids, he's willing to kill them) I don't get it
I hope the comic isn't pointing towards Selina trying to meet Bruce's expectations of a lover base on his relationship with Andrea. I mean, it could work in the cartoons but hard to swallow in the comics.
If I had coat like Selina's, i'd be either cool or ridiculed, but any way, I forgot about this for a bit, and thought we'd more answers and a conclusion... TURNS OUT, I also forgot this is 12 issues, and I don't thonk i can take that much current Tom King. At least the art is great.
I’ve actually enjoyed the hell out of Kings run. Though I suspect that with Didios fall from Grace, falling sales and increasing criticism of his run “why no wedding?” And cold feet by AT&T changed how his run was structured. 1) I think that King intended Bruce and Selina to get married at the end of his run. (He had to pitch this to AT&T) 2) Alfred was not supposed to die originally. It seemed that the “marriage/non marriage” was put in to satisfy the story arc and yet retain the Future IP commercial viability of Batman and Catwoman. Ultimately, this being black label, frees up King to “end” his statement in the Batman/Catwoman relationship on his own terms, so this is more satisfying.
This is tangentially related to this book but is anyone else getting tired about the constant conversation about why batman wont kill, especially the joker? It feels like I cant read a batman book where no one challanges his no killing rule.
I still like the College Humor "BADMAN" with Pete Holmes, specifically the one with Paton Oswald's Penguin. That seems to portray the truth about his no killing rule.
I don't really have a problem with Batman no kill rule. I think hero should stick to their morals. My problem is 1) Batman trying to force his "no kill" rule on other heroes. It arrogant of Batman to think his way is the only way no matter what the circumstances. 2) Batman holding grudge over villains who death where justify. Case and point Joker death in Injustice. Superman had every right too kill Joker and I truly believe that if Batman had been a friend instead of fighting with Superman things would not have escalated.
Agree, I get that writers want to challenge and explore Batman philosophy to be deep but we've seen it all before. Like its fine to just let the man man catch crooks without constant moral debates. Don't get me wrong a like a lot of Batman stories that do that but it doesn't have to be crammed down are throats.
The no kill rule wasn’t a part of Batmans creation, (Batman wouldn’t murder, but death in battle wouldn’t bothered him) but it became a very important part of his character. Especially once the book was aimed towards children. Even then, the villains weren’t necessarily bloodthirsty, just colorful. The problem is that fiction, especially in comics, “grew up” to reflect “realism. The readers were no longer children. Meaning murder was the way to increase the threat level of the villains and killing was a viable option for heroes. For Batman to work, on a fictional level, requires him not to kill. This makes him different than Wolverine, Punisher and Midnighter. But because he IS Batman, and it’s still a escapist superhero genre rules, he can have the code against killing and win. After all, “Realistically” Joker would have been executed or murdered a long time ago. Comic book rules, Joker gets to escape, time and time again. What King does here is to show how Batman’s code creates dramatic conflict within the structure of an escapist superhero genre. Selina here is feeling the guilt of lying to Bruce and working with Joker. Bruce not making an exception to killing the Joker, despite murdering the husband and child of a old love. Selina believed there should be exceptions to the rule...because she’s about breaking the rules. But what King is also showcasing: Andrea Belmont was murdering her way through the underworld for revenge. Under the rules of escapist Comic Book genre, The Phantasm was just as much of a villain as the Joker. And that freed up “Joker” to take his revenge. Andrea brought it on “herself” so to speak.
9:15 it because Tom King present Joker and Selina relationship as too casual. Catwoman can't stand Joker, and Joker hate Catwoman connection to Batman. But Tom King has them talk like their old frienemies.
Tom king and snyder both have this weird idea of joker being friends with catwoman and batman respectively, despite trying to kill them on multiple occasions. I really dont get it
@@megamonmon Agreed. I mean I can see Joker having a fucked up one-sided relationship with Batman but Batman and Catwoman should have nothing but pure contempt for Joker.
I think there is more to this Joker/Selina relationship that King has let on. I don’t think Selina was working with The joker on the heist. I think he found out about the robbery and tried to sabotage her relationship with Bruce I think Kings Selina hates the Joker, but restrained herself for two reasons: 1) Joker had the lion medallion as blackmail. And 2) She’s trying to desperately to be a better person.
I agree that it is super weird to see the joker and Catwoman hang out like this. The only time I can think of that happening in other media was in batman 66, but really, that was more everyone teaming up with penguin than anything else. Catwoman for many years was crimnial with a strict code of honor, rairly if ever killing, though she did catfish, poison, and punch. Even when she lost her no kill code, I don't think it was an every issue thing. The Joker is a killer through and through. While I like him to be more funny than scary, there is no denying that that is what he is. He only steals either to get funds for his bigger, more ridiculus plans, or just for the hell of it because they are shiny. Catwoman basically only steals, only occosionally going into deathtrap mode and almost never doing things that aren't directly related to a heist of some kind. So basically, they are different genera's of Batman villians. they really ony have three things in common, their debute issue, wanting to sleep with batman and living in gotham city. I don't really see Selina wanting to work with that psychopath, at least with out a buffer villian like Penguin or Riddler or Lex Luthor.
This does seem a bit like a paced-out graphic novel. I do feel like there is going to be a payoff. I am really looking forward to seeing where this is going.

Their relationship in their latter years did surprise me a bit..... but it was mostly the portrayal of the Joker as an old man that got to me..... His actions were in line with his character, but I can't "see" how he got to be an old man outliving Batman and not be imprisoned or otherwise.

Please HELP!! Any DC Comics fans? Cause I've got a question/problem that I need explained regarding current runs and titles. Right now I'm behind a couple months, so please no spoilers with Death Metal, or of the major storylines cause I'm not even halfway through it. Sorry if I give anything away. I started with Rebirth. Fell in love, bit confusing sometimes. Luckily, I had previously read several collected Batman storylines, some of the big ones. But I got quite lost during the Doom War storyline because they had multiple storylines going on all at once. In JL, the Flash would be doing one thing at particular moment, but in his own title - at the exact same moment - he'd be doing something else entirely, nowhere near where he was in JL. This was the same for other characters. And at the end of Doom War, the JL had been defeated, they were on the moon, and were about to walk through some doorway. Next few issues, no mention. Now, again, they would a character doing one thing in one comic book at a particular moment, but at the same time, in another title, they were doing something else entirely. Like Batgirl doing one thing in Nightwing, one thing in her own title, and something else in Batman... but at the same time. Like there were three of her. She's not the only one. Then you've Death Metal, which started before Joker War, before Nightwing got his memories back, but there he was anyway.
I haven't read much recent comics in a while (catching up through here and some other channels) but holy cow, that sounds like a mess. Maybe it has something to do with editors being fired and talent layoff (that did happen)?? Sorry I couldn't help. I'm kind of loosely speculating here that maybe the creators had to hit the main points of the tie-ins while still doing (or trying) whatever the hell they wanted within that, because of behind the scenes shakeups.
I have liked it so far..I agree that it will be a much better read in a trade...so I am toying with the idea of not reading anymore until it is done..but that would take discipline...I like the mystery, and I am hopeful that the end will a giant BANG and not a whimper.

I see the phantasm... I click... i then click like...now what is this video about... let me find out...
I don't hate it. It takes it's time, which is ok by me. It has to pay off in the end tho.
Seems like a cool series.
Tom King Batman run was mostly garbage in my opinion but the art was always good I give it that.
I agree with you on how it feels weird that Joker and Catwoman was working with each other. 9:13
But anyway gave the video a like.

Interesting video.
I still haven't read this run. I'm not a batcat shipper. I'm a wonderbat fan. Hell I ship Bruce with a lot of people before Selina. I only watched this video because I like your content.
*Wonderbat forever!*
I just hate how DC still hasn’t given us that ship yet for some reason.
@@AstaIsAMonster other than Lois and Clark. Or Arthur and Mera, they hardly give us any ships.
@@karenstarr yeah it’s depressing
