    The best and simplest mast raising system I have seen so far. Thank you for sharing!

    Hey Judy: Have you considered placing the Furler cup in a small burlap bag and letting it dangle? That way you could get rid of 3 lines. You got so many lines you could hang yourself inadvertently. Nice implementation of the MacGregor mast raising winch.

    very nice design. love stabiliser shrouds :) i use simular system and just hold it by hand and its enough but those definately look helpful.

    Good demonstration. I have used this technique for several years, until I created a more efficient method of using a winch. I have a electric winch attached to the front of the trailer. I use a wireless controller and stand on the deck. I attach the winch tot he jib halyard. This way I don't have to carry around all of that stuff (gen pole, rope, clips, bolts, hooks, ..etc). The winch is powered by my truck battery because I ran a 12v plug to the back of my truck. I can put up my mast, and sails in 20 minutes with no fuss. Just a suggestion to anyone who is looking for a efficient way to do this.

    Nice...especially if you assembled the gin pole.
    Might be smart to ask the owner of the Nissan behind you
    to move out for a half hour, though....but it built dramatic tension
    very nicely!

      It's my husband's car. No worries. :)
      I've been doing stuff like this single handed for 20 years, and haven't dropped a mast yet.

    very nice , i cant believe there have been only 2 poor comments on this system with 16000 viewers, it does seem to solve many problems. Especially it offers a second forstay, which i find practical. I would suggest to have the stabilizers on the mast and also directly on the pole, i like the winch and might prefer using steel cables instead of ropes. thanks so much for posting

    • @hydesailsdirect4357
      @hydesailsdirect4357 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have since modified the system to use with wire cables. Less stretch = better control of the mast & less side sway.

    • @peterhull100
      @peterhull100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hyde Sails Direct yes I thought that it could be improved by less sway. I wondered if the stabilising lines could attached to the mast not the for and aft lines

    • @hydesailsdirect4357
      @hydesailsdirect4357 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes indeed they can. I would be better to attach the lines to the mast, but you have to get them just the right length.

    • @peterhull100
      @peterhull100 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have installed 2 midship cleats directly in line with the mast foot for that reason. I am going to try adjustable polyester trailer straps under tension and adjusted to the right length. The type lorries use to secure their loads but smaller. I use these on the trailer anyway to secure the boat so I think they would stop the tendency for the mast to sway if I tension them up equally on both sides. I am not sure if the spinny pole ring only 1.3 metres from the base of an 8m long mast is high enough. I may have to install another ring higher on the mast but then there is the problem of getting the straps on it when the mast is erect to lower the mast again!! Any ideas?
      The mast step on my Dufour T6 is cast alloy and is cracked in more than one place so I am having a new one machined from Duralumin.
      I have also changed the design somewhat with 2 jaws at the rear hinge instead of 1. The existing single had a tendency to twist which cracked the casting.
      Up to now I have used a gin pole using the spinny pole but not hinged. It was clamped onto the base of the mast with some homemade GRP fittings but not happy with this long term.
      I have bought a new 2mx 30mmx30mm alloy box section for the pole and I am going to use the front hinge it at the base much like the video.
      The mainsheet had adequate power to raise the mast in the past so I am still going to use that rather than another winch. Up to now I have had to manhandle to mast to a sloping position using a telescopic mast support. I am going to use a spinny pole halyard about midway up the mast to a pull the mast from a horizontal position to see how that works .

    I have the same questions asked in other comments. Can you please provide some info on the mast raising system. What type of winch? Two speed? What length is the pole? How high is the mast on this boat and are you concerned about lifting the mast from the middle?

    • @hydesailsdirect4357
      @hydesailsdirect4357 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The winch is a light duty braking winch by Fulton. The exact dimensions of attachments isn''t critical. The gin pole is about 5.5 feet long. The attachment point is about as hgh as I can comfortably reach without stretching, 6 feet up from the butt of the mast.
      There's no reason to worry about lifting the mast from "the middle". It's not going to buckle under its own weight.

    A very ingenious system!!! What size boat do you have? I am considering a Tanzer 28-31ft and could envision the winch pole in 'sections' so it could be broken down and stored 'on-board' within the stern rack that also contains a set of solar panels and a wind turbine. Thank you very much for your videos....

      @@redwood1957 NO, I didn't buy that boat, got cancer, instead. Back in Vermont, USA, from Bangkok, doing chemo. Still need prostate surgery once I get out of the hospital for a UTI...looking at Pearson 28, Alberg 30 or Corsair 30 trimarans, instead. Corsair already has self-raising/lowering mast system. James Baldwin, CYS in Brunswick, GA built system for his P28. Same system can be adapted to A30...

      you can make it yourself to suit the dimensions of your boat. It's made of commonly available components. A pole, a self braking winch, a couple of low stretch lines, some shackles, etc.
