  • The Impreza has a purpose, and it's better than it's ever been, but I'm not convinced the hatchback will make it past this generation. That said, I think it deserves a look alongside cars like the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra, Kia Forte, VW Jetta and more!

    Honest and fair review on a pretty no frills vehicle. Will say that given how expensive cars are getting now, getting a practical AWD vehicle at this price is pretty refreshing.

    I have a 2023 Sport with the five speed. It’s an amazing commuter. Not fast or really fun, but I enjoy every drive. Shame this doesn’t have an option to row your own gears.
    Edit: I destroy epa ratings. Got 37.4 two tanks ago, and 36.3 last tank. The 2.0 sips on the highway.

    I’m on my 4th Impreza. I would hate to see the model killed off. It’s a solid and reliable little car with all wheel drive. You will get back home on a snowy day. I can haul a lot of stuff back from Home Depot with the rear seats down. The low roof line makes it easy to use the roof rack for items like kayaks and plywood.

    I would have loved to buy this car...until I came across a Legacy Premium with the BSM and RCTA package. The Legacy was discounted at $28k, the Impreza was marked up to $29k for a sport. At that price, it's hard to justify the Impreza as a value proposition, especially with the 2.0 engine.

    Nice review, I have a 2022 base and it’s a pretty decent practical car. The CVT does make it feel kinda appliance-like but I appreciate the standard AWD, CarPlay, and adaptive cruise and lane assist stuff. Interesting you briefly mentioned the windshield issue as I just got a crack from a rock hitting right between the two EyeSight cameras. Is this really a widespread thing? Hope I don’t need a full windshield replacement but it’s pretty close to the cameras…

      @nowiecoche 7 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I've read a number of posts about cracked windshield on the 5th gen Impreza forum. I haven't experienced any issues related to that. However, I did have the dealer do some coating on the windshield that prevents windshield cracking when I bought it from them.
      If your EyeSight has been working properly since your windshield cracked, then I don't see any worries.

    How many miles on your test car? Subarus like my 2017 Impreza loosen up and get noticeably more responsive as they break in. Mine got a lot better after 1500 miles. If your tester was less than 100 miles or so I’d expect it to do the 0-60 under 9 seconds which is certainty adequate. Around town the gas mileage on mine is a not great, 24mpg but on the highway at 70-75 I regularly get real pump measured 35 and have seen 36 a time or two.

      @@Realistick In assessing the Impreza's driving performance, it's important to drive it in [S] mode (Sport mode). The car defaults to [I] mode (Subaru's "Intelligent" Eco mode) in order to post the best fuel economy rating. [S] increases the low-end torque to make the car feel much more responsive. You lose some mpg under acceleration, but once you're up to cruising speed the fuel economy (visualized by the torque curve on the dashboard) evens out.

  • @DavidMichaelKalman
    @DavidMichaelKalman 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    This Impreza has an upgraded fuel tank now equal to the Crosstrek, so it can drive well over 500 highway miles on a tank. That could account for some of the measured reduction in mpg.... higher tested curb weight. I also suspect the base Impreza mpg rating is copied from the Sport, which has larger wheels. The base Impreza should get the same mpg as previous years with 3/4 full gas tank. I still think the base Impreza is a value leader with the lowest cost for ride comfort+AWD capability+utility as long as you replace the vacation-killer (fix-a-flat kit) with a proper spare from the Crosstrek. The main Crosstrek advantage is the added 3" of ground clearance, for driving in mud or snow > 5" deep... why spend an extra $2K if you live in the sun belt.. Also, the Impreza has better power to weight ratio (comparing the 2.0L to 2.0L) so it's definitely more responsive. With Crosstrek, the 2.5L is almost essential, so you really should compare the prices for an Impreza 2.0L with the Crosstrek 2.5L.

    • @Realistick
      @Realistick  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ah that tank is nice to have! That’s definitely its niche though I’d personally go with a legacy premium for the money. Additionally, DO NOT put a crosstrek spare on an impreza. The different tire size could cause awd issues. I’d also like to add that the 2.0l Impreza is nowhere near as peppy as the 2.5 crosstrek. It feels much more similar to the 2.0l crosstrek and the numbers support this too.(weight difference is like 50lbs for 2024 if we’re comparing sport to premium)

      @@Realistick Definitely worth verifying the fit of the spare. Thx.

    • @DavidMichaelKalman
      @DavidMichaelKalman 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Realistick For what it's worth Subaru uses the same size T145/80 D17" temp spare for all of the Crosstrek trims, regardless of the full size wheels on the car (both 17" and 18").
      Likewise with the 2023 Impreza. They used the same size temp spare regardless of the full wheel size. The 2023 spare was T135/80 D16", and it was included with all trims, including the trims with 16", 17' and 18" wheels.
      Subaru obviously didn't/doesn't consider the diameter variance a serious concern, perhaps because a temp spare is meant to be used at limited speed (< 50mph) for a limited distance (< 50 miles).
      Of course, you now also have to be careful about the bolt pattern, which Subaru changed for 2024, so older wheels no longer fit.
      All that said, a temporary compact spare is almost as useless as the vacation-killer (fix-a-flat) kit.

      @@DavidMichaelKalman Could one buy a separate set of wheels from Subaru with snow tires mounted, and then use one of those as a spare? Or would that be a big no-no? 🤷

    • @DavidMichaelKalman
      @DavidMichaelKalman 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@sopwithsnoopy8779 For your spare tire, you would want a tire that's ideally the same brand, size, and category as your other tires. The wear will still be different on the spare, so you should use it only temporarily until you can replace all the tires, or buy a matching replacement that has the same tread depth. A full size spare is still better than using a donut compact spare. What I've done is buy (on eBay) a matching used Subaru wheel and a matching used half-worn tire. If I get a flat at some point, it's likely the half-worn tire will be close in tread depth to the other tires.

    A few anecdotes -- I like your reviews a lot because they do a great job of covering the things you'll notice regularly. That being said, I think it's easier to break down who this car is for when sum up the head-to-heads in one place:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    In practice, the visibility in the Impreza versus the Civic (both versions) is jarring. The Impreza's rear visibility is far superior to the Civic, and imitates a small SUV. Similarly, loading the trunk is that of a traditional hatchback and eclipses some small SUVs like the RAV4, Corolla Cross (easily), and Mazda CX30 -- the Civic by contrast feels like a trunk that you can pile a little bit higher.
    So if you're cross-shopping the Civic and the Impreza, and you're either:
    a) swapping between an SUV and a car (i.e. not getting fully used to the Civic's visibility)
    b) regularly backing out of either a tight space or a busy pedestrian area
    c) buying the car for an inexperienced driver
    d) want to fit 4 people in the car with an above-average-size driver (the Civic driving position feels like it requires more legroom, eating into more rear passenger space)
    then I think the Impreza has some serious advantages.
    Cross-shopping the Corolla, I hate its suspension, and can't make any further objective drive comparisons. Also, the rear seat in the Corolla feels unusable to me, and I am not as big as Tyler. I feel like the front seat driving position in the Impreza does not require me to compromise the rear seat as much.
    The Mazda3 is a 2-person car.
    If you are buying a Jetta to be frugal and you aren't personally a mechanic, what are you doing?
    I don't know much about the Elantra or Forte so I cannot compare.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Given I don't know anything about the Elantra or Forte, I won't talk about them like I do. But there's a very obvious target for the Impreza: parents buying a first car for their children. It can fit their friends, it gets great safety ratings, the AWD means they won't screw up as badly on a slightly icy day going to school or their friends' house, the excellent visibility will help keep them out of their first car accident, and the lack of power is a feature in parents' eyes. The storage is good enough to bring all their stuff to and from college, but it's still tiny and easy to find parking for.
    It should absolutely sell itself to this market, but unfortunately, Subaru has lost the plot with the sport focus.
