I Spent Christmas Day on a Cruise Ship - It Was Unusual

  • When I booked an MSC cruise that included Christmas day onboard, I didn't know what to expect. The result was a cruise that I will never forget, for many reasons!
    The cruise took place onboard the MSC Meravglia and we visited Italy, Spain, France, and Malta during the 7-night cruise.
    In this video, I talk about food, entertainment, Christmas decorations, and more.

    We have a severely handicapped child who needs constant attention and is often violent. One year we saved up our respite days and took the other children on a cruise. It was delightful. We bought along a little tiny tree and one or two little gifts each, and put a banner and a wreath up. Their turkey dinner wasn’t as good as ours at home, but then some of us didn’t chose it anyway and none of us had to do dishes! We sang carols quietly in one of our rooms and “lit” a battery operated candle, because we do something like that at home. It was memorable.

    We've done Christmas cruises on Celebrity every year since 2013 (except 2020) and love it. I hate the stress of dealing with extended family, shopping, running around getting everything done, etc. at home. Now we just tell everyone "sorry, we're on a cruise" and enjoy doing what we want on Christmas eve and day. Plus it's great to see the ports decorated as well.

    How I enjoy your bright presentations!
    I rarely leave my farm in the French Alps as I have everything I need. The thought of getting on a big boat with thousands of other people and venturing on the oceans is a strange one to me, although there are lakes nearby and brave people with boats.
    I have never seen the oceans, but most people have never seen a small farm in the Alps.
    It is always interesting and enjoyable to observe how other people live their lives and enjoy themselves.
    It is that one enriches one's life by learning about different things and your channel provides great enjoyment.
    If I were to take an ocean holiday, based on your programmes, It would be from SouthHamton to New York on the Queen Mary II, but I would have to obtain the passport and purchase a locker of new clothings.
    Best wishes to you.

    My wife and I spent Christmas on a Carnival ship two years ago. There were tons of decorations and entertainment aimed a children. Everyone who takes a Christmas Cruise does it for a reason. When you remember that that many have either chosen not to be with their family or have no family to be with the whole experience takes on a different hue. The pros were were missing the horrible weather back in the states for a few days and Carnival doing its best to make it a cheerful experience (even though they were a little over the top at times). The cons were that it could be really dreary if you thought too much about why you were there instead of at home. The only thing missing were religious services. They may have scheduled services but we didn't see it. That might have taken the edge off of some of the bittersweet tone. One of the cutest things about the whole trip was watching the officers getting to spend some time with their families. The sight of our charming Italian captain giving his wife and bambinos a tour of his ship was just too sweet. I would do it again. One the whole it was a pleasant experience. Happy Thanksgiving Emma.

      And think of the crew working on Christmas instead of being at home with their families. I couldn’t do it.

    • @BillKumpe
      @BillKumpe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@penelopepitstop762 I had a bit of interaction with the crew and they didn't seem to mind much. A lot of the serving staff were Indonesian or other Asian cultures so Christmas didn't mean much to them anyway. Others like the lower ratings and security appeared to be mostly Serbian. They seemed happy enough. And, the officers who chose to had their families on board. Over all the crew didn't appear any different than on any other cruise.

    • @penelopepitstop762
      @penelopepitstop762 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BillKumpe that’s good to know. I didn’t think about them not celebrating Christmas, so it’s probably just another day to them. But, the crew members work so hard I don’t think they’d let you see them any other way than happy.

    • @BillKumpe
      @BillKumpe 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@penelopepitstop762 Reading people was a survival skill in the profession(s) I retired from. And, I like to interact with the crew as appropriate. A really sweet little Indonesian girl we talked to was sad she had not seen her child in a while but it wasn't because of Christmas. She wasn't Christian. But she shared that she was happy to be making enough money to send home to take good care of him. The Serbian security guard responsible for the deck area where we hung out seemed pretty cheerful. He was young, handsome and surrounded by pretty girls in bikinis who were giving him glances as he made the rounds. He didn't have to help the tiny filipino deck crewman polishing the hot tubs and pool fixtures but he did. Helped him lift heavy stuff and even picked up a rag and polished some of the high stuff the little guy had a hard time reaching. He looked to me like a nice (but tough if he had to be) kid having the adventure of his life. I didn't see any "Christmas blues" and I believe I would have read it if it were there.

    I spent Christmas 2013 on MSC Fantasia from Genoa to the Eastern Mediterranean including a 2 day stop in Israel. Absolutely loved the cruise and especially the food. I don’t like all the sentimental rubbish of a British Christmas and so it suited me fine. A lot of Italian children thought I was Father Christmas and I had many requests for photographs. Christmas Day was actually a port day in Piraeus, the only time I have ever visited mainland Greece. Piraeus was completely dead and I only spent an hour or so ashore. This was my second MSC cruise. I would have done many more but then they started making it difficult for solo cruisers to book with them especially as regards choice of cabin so I haven’t been with again so far.

    We spent one Christmas on a Royal Caribbean ship in the Caribbean. The whole ship was decked out in traditional Christmas decorations. It was fantastic, even though it was weird being in a warm climate on Christmas. The food had all the Christmas favorites ( prime rib and turkey), all the traditional pies; there was Christmas music, a carol sing, and even a midnight mass. We had a wonderful time.

So… needless to say, I love the Christmas spirit!

    You really look beautiful in your black and white dress! @@EmmaCruises it still feels odd but dying of heat because it’s hot and you’ve got the oven going on as well is just the pits. Better to go cold and save the traditional (and still the best) Christmas dinner for winter. And that way you get two grand celebrations and break up the year nicely. We don’t generally put the tree up but we do get the table decorations out. And so many restaurants do ‘Christmas in July’ with the entire place decorated for Christmas. It’s lovely.

    I haven't done a Christmas cruise but I have done several on Thanksgiving. Often times there is a Christmas tree up and very mild decorations. I always assumed they would do more Christmas decorations in another week or two. I would be up for a Christmas cruise if it wasn't for how high flights are during the holidays. Yes I know I just said I've done Thanksgiving cruises and I do understand the irony. The last Thanksgiving cruise we took we decided would be our last due to how much the plane tickets go up. Going forward we're going to continue a fall cruise, just not on a holiday week. I don't think I would bring any gifts onboard though.
    Looks like you had a great time Emma.

    My first cruise was a Christmas Cruise in the early '90s. With my mum. It was a Disney Cruise before DCL on Premier Cruise Line. They had the right to use the Disney Characters on board. The boat was more like the Love Boat. No Balconies, one dining room, and about 1500 guests onboard. It was just a 3-night cruise to Nassau and to their private island. We boarded on Christmas Eve and Christmas was a sea day. I just remember the last night the boat was late and it was pretty rough racing back to Port Canaveral. As our cabin was near the waterline (like most of the cabins) and we only had a porthole for our oceanview. Cruises have changed for the better I think. Plus we had 4 days at WDW after the cruise. Of cruise that was my main gift for that Christmas. BTW Elf was mostly filming in my city of Vancouver.

    I cruised once over Christmas, not specifically a Christmas cruise, most passengers decorated their cabin doors and we also decorated the lounge. As Christmas isn’t celebrated by all I can remember one passenger response to the lounge decorating as “Christmas has thrown-up”

    Hi Emma, Jill and I got off the Celebrity Millennium this morning ((Thanksgiving Day) and we're sitting in Washington DC Airport for next flight back to Connecticut. The Main Dining Room did have turkey on the menu. But the Steak Dianne looked better, and it was. We'll have turkey with the whole family in one week, making sure no covid symptoms because of having our grandkids there. Cruise was fan-tabulous. Tired now. Hi from Bob and Jill soon to be back in Connecticut in our own bed. Go Chelsea Blues 💙

    We have done 4 cruises over Christmas, all with Princess, Christmas has always been a good experience. I must admit I did send the Christmas evening meal back once...as it's American...The turkey was covered in a sweet sauce, the potatoes were coated in what one can only assume was icing sugar, the sprouts had a honey glaze as did the small sausages, I think the gravy was maple syrup.
    Apart from that one bad meal Christmas has always been great.. Try Princess...

      Falling out usual implies two friends either having a fight or disagreement - that’s my understanding coming from Britain. It usually is always between ‘friends (or family)’. You can’t have (IMO) a falling out between 2 strangers for example.

    My Scottish born father loved Yorkshire Pudding and was astounded that I couldn't understand the attraction, and my position on it then and now was, I'll just pass thank you. Needed to look up why the Bay of Biscay was notorious, as a land locked Canadian I'd heard of it but didn't understand the reference. Now I know.

    • @johnnyhollis9977

      Just to add to that, many Brits that cruise into the Med have to travel through the notorious Bay of Biscay. They usually hit the area very early in the morning and the ship can be a bit quiet for a while! It can be really aggressive with huge swells to ruin your whole day or amazingly on other occasions like a mill pond and barely a ripple!
      Makes life interesting though!!! 😉
