NEVER.... Let me say this again NEVER, wear a lanyard with your cruise card or a wearable medallion visible out of port. Don't become an easily identified target for thieves.

We were on a Viking river cruise and in their pre-trip packet they provided these large nylon multi-pocket pouch type things with a neck strap and "Viking Cruises" emblazoned across them. I can't tell you how many of our fellow passengers were wandering around European cities wearing those foolish things around their necks! As you so aptly state; not good, not good at all.

@@Wkmor I loved my Medallion belt clip for Princess. Inconspicuous, compact, easily pocketable. Otherwise, for the ships that are contactless, I just put the card on my wallet and leave it there. I always have my wallet. It feels weird to NOT sit on it lol.

I believe (will confirm on next trip) that Royal Caribbean now has a thing where you can open your stateroom door with their app on your phone. Since these days people and their phones are almost literally grafted to each other, it seems to me like a pretty good solution.

My hack is to bring a pair of European USB charging blocks so I can use the euro sockets for more USB devices and they double as night lights. I'm in the U.S. So while most ships have 2 US sockets, not all ships do so I use the European socket too.

If I need to wash out things in the cabin sink, I just use the available liquid soap/body wash or shampoo. All these are detergents and basically the same thing (as liquid laundry detergent), so all will do the same job.

      I do the same.
Don't use these in a washing machine. If your ship has a laundry room you plan to use, you can prepackage dry laundry detergent in snack baggies. (Pods are an option but pack them very well. You don't want them to break open.) Some ships make you pay for detergent. Sometimes you have to pay to use machines as well.

Some of the shampoos that don’t have conditioner actually clean tee shirts stain better than a lot of detergents!

Lol, I tried the washing t-shirts thing. They either weren't as clean as I'd have liked, or they didn't dry fast enough, and I ended up with three new t-shirts after that trip, only one of which I actually liked. So, I'm not doing that again. :-)

I always carry a little bottle of laundry soap and never had to use it. Cue Hurricane Ian, had to stay on ship 3 extra days and had to do laundry to have enough clothing because for the first time in 50+ cruises I decided to pack light. No longer a fan of packing light. Hubby had to go to infirmary to get extra meds for the extra days. Kudos to the cruiseline who did this at no charge and also extended our internet and drink packages at no charge.

The one tip I have is to purchase high quality adapter plugs and don’t use the inbuilt USB ports in the cabin. The better quality adapters usually come with an equipment warranty if they cause damage to your devices. Some cruise ships may not have clean power supplies.

I save the packets of shampoo and conditioner you get as samples for shorter trips where I’m just washing my hair once. But I’ve been reusing my mini shampoo and conditioner bottles for years and it’s great! I keep any bottle from a sample of mini size kit (lots of free ones come with purchase around the holidays) for future travel. I use the lanyard for my card just because it is harder to lose something on a lanyard than lose in my bag. Lanyard is less bulky than my wallet. I always have a tiny bag just cause I like to have my sunglasses, phone, and sometimes the go pro.

    • @Petra44YT

I had a mini sized shampoo bottle that you could refill which followed me on many trips. I had it for more than ten years, and I liked it, because you could see it was shampoo. But then, the neck broke, so I used up the rest of the shampoo at home and said bye-bye to my trusty travel bottle.

I wear quick-dry underthings, pants & tee shirts. [A guy, and never wear shirts without a tee beneath.] I find that it is much easier to wash them in the shower than in the sink - by wearing them in the shower. First right-side out, then inside out. I just use the bath soap provided. Once they're wet, you can turn off the water stream while you scrub them, until taking them off to rinse, and then scrub self. Once rinsed, wring them out thoroughly, roll them up in a towel and tromp on the towel. At this point, they're nearly dry. I usually shower in the evenings, to let them dry overnight. I pack two pairs, but could really get by with one. The first time you step into a shower wearing them, it feels a bit strange, but like walking around in the rain without a raincoat or umbrella, you quickly get used to it. Very handy and quick. Thanks for your excellent video; as always, you are so helpful and considerate; two things rather rare in the world.

Note that UK travelers can get a European to UK plug adapter to use that European outlet. Those European outlets should be 220-240VAC at 50Hz. 😀
Americans can do a similar thing if their electronics use 110-240VAC 50/60Hz. Otherwise, bad smoke. 😐

I buy the oblong clear poly propylene fliptop bottles in the full 4 ounce size which means I get slightly more product and there’s not one security guard that can tell the difference between 100 mils and 4 ounces which means I have never been stopped or even questioned at any airport checkpoint in more than 20 years of travel. Not the cylindrical bottles.
I always take a small 1 ounce bottle of my favorite hand dishwashing liquid and a small bottle of my favorite dry laundry powder so that I can do minor laundry tasks in the bathroom basin
USB receptacles are often hiding in some strange places so not just lamps and the back of the television but I’ve seen them on headboards and the side of the writing desk in the room
I always carry an electrical converter that’s compatible with whatever country I’m going to which converts the local electrical plug into my current North American receptacle and then carry a couple of $.99 three-way converters which means when I plug in I instantly have not one place to plug-in iPhones laptops phones cameras but now I have three outlets to charge my devices by using one local outlet
I also bring a four-way USB hub which means I can plug it in . It has a 4 foot cable and then I can plug-in for USB devices in the hub
I always bring a reusable plastic coffee cup with a snap on lid which means when I’m through with breakfast I can easily fill that cup with more coffee orange juice or whatever I like and continue on my way

It was quite pricey for me (AUD$70) but I use it every day and it’s now around 2 years old and still going strong. Best thing is it only takes up one plug socket and is reliable.

I’ve never in 22 years of cruising had a problem bringing a power strip on a cruise ship. I use a 4 outlet/3 USB unit marketed specifically for cruise ships and it’s never been questioned. However, surge protector strips are universally banned. I don’t know what’s specifically a problem with surge protector strips. Maybe the number of outlets on the strip is a factor too, I’m not sure about that. Check the fine print under banned items on the cruise line’s website to be sure.

    • @danzaokid
      @danzaokid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's the surge suppression circuits in those fancier power strips that are not compatible with cruise ship power and can overheat/overload. I recall finding a youtube video that explained it in detail. The surge circuit was designed for shore power with a true ground wire in a normal house on land. Cruise ships generate their own power with no "ground wire" for the surge circuitry to work correctly.

Hand soap or shampoo work perfectly well for hand washing clothes. I would not bother to pack laundry soap. I wear quick dry everything when traveling. I do wash my mask every day, and will use multiple masks on long days. I always have 2 or 3 cloth masks with me (pre-covid I only carried one).

7:30 if you only need more USB ports you can buy a USB dongle (they are usually MUCH smaller then any other type of multi socket adapter). You can get them with a single USB plug to plug into a USB port on the ship and they can come with anywhere from 2 to 10 USB sockets to plug your USB devices into. These will not be banned as they run at USB voltage and amperage so there is no danger of fire.

A shame they don't like those 4-gang trailer sockets - they're much *less* of an electrical fire hazard than the brick-style adaptors (assuming the cable's long enough to put the main body on the deck or a desk), since there's less twisting force on the prongs of the plug.

Great advice for items to utilise on a cruise. From my experience, I have found the in-cabin shampoo works well for hand washing so I don't bring laundry soap. Also, it is possible to use shampoo in a washing machine as long as you don't put an excessive amount in it. The "urban legend" that shampoo creates too many bubbles just doesn't seem to be true. Thanks for letting me waffle on about laundry on board!

I buy European versions of all the chargers I need so I don't need a UK adaptor at all. I have these for my iPad, shaver, dumb Nokia GSM phone (I hate the small screens on smartphones), and for my Olympus camera battery charger I just have a European mains lead. I also bought the US versions of all these for a trip to Japan pre covid. Since no adaptors are involved, this makes all sockets in the rooms or cabins usable.

  • @SunnyTravels
    @SunnyTravels 3 ปีที่แล้ว

What I do when there's only one plug socket:
I charge my computer in that socket and use the USB ports to charge things.
Or I'll have my cruise charge splitter, which I lost, but i just went on a 21 Day cruise and I only charged USB-things and my camera battery.

If you want your clothes wrung dry, wrap articles lengthways in a towel and twist as hard as you can. The clothes are nearly dry. One person on either end or stand on one end and twist.

Hi Emma, an update for your website. Marella have been replacing the two vertically stacked European sockets on the Discovery (and I presume the others) with a single European socket and a triple USB arrangement. One USB is the standard type and the other two are USB-C for high-speed charge enabled phones so a USB-C to USB-C cable is need to take advantage of this. I believe that the suites also have USB under the bedside lamps as well.

I thought your term “waffle” was interesting to learn. Besides the breakfast item, I had always heard the term used to show indecisiveness. “I am waffling between Carnival and MSC.” Do you also use it this way? I am from the Northwest of USA, if that makes any difference.

On a 16 day transatlantic we brought along older clothes which we tossed after using rather than washing or bringing them back, where I would have tossed them anyway. Since we were flying home it kept our baggage under the airline’s maximum allowed weight, which wasn’t a consideration when boarding the ship.

I put my cruise card in my bra under my arm if I don’t have a secure pocket. It’s safe and I can discretely slip my hand under my shirt or in the neck and get it out when I need to use it to get into my room. When I’m going off ship it’s in my purse so I can get through security.

There are other countries other than England or Britian (to me Britain usually refers to poms) that use the term waffle on. However, I think that the terms are more directed at Yanks. My opinion, not knocking the pommie sheila or the Sepos.

Hi Emma, Great video information. QUESTION: What is the stick-on card pocket (for the back of the phone) called or made of so the phone won't nuke the cruise card data? I use laundry sheets (Wash Eze) for the sink and laundry mat use. Love my waffles with warm blueberry syrup and whipped cream (out of the can).

I don’t think it really has a name, just card phone holder. It’s just some kind of plastic as far as I can tell. You’ll find it here: emmacruises.com/essentials 😀
