Fatal error not putting Miura in goat tier
Ikr
I've heard many artists that love Berserk talk about his work. The backgrounds are amazing, everything is insanely detailed, and his world and Monster design are on a different level. But this is thanks to his assistants. The characters themselves are often very stiff like puppets, which often makes action panels less impact full and Miura often uses the same perspective throughout the manga.
@@bludc364you must have not seen his original works they are just as detailed miura did 90% of the art on berserk
Veryyy true, just the dream sequence chapters with Casca put him in the greatest of all time, the imagery is just amazing and is a perfect example of visual storytelling
@dylanely8309 I actually have. I do own all of the Berserk artbooks, and I'm a huge Miura fan. For me personally, he's the goat and artistically on the highest tier together with Inoue, Asano, Murata, Boichi, Toriyama, Araki, and Sakamoto. But I myself am not an artist. I don't see the full picture when it comes to art, and I'm easily impressed. I was just stating what many other artists like DLAS are saying about Miura.
The assistants behind Beserk actually stated that Miura did most of the work, including the detailing because he was such a perfectionist. There’s an interview where they talk about how the biggest thing they did was drawing the pattern on a floor.
MIura actually did most of the art by himself and often the assistant simply draw some background characters and in one interview miura mentions that they also sometimes draw the floor
Imagine having 5 assistants for "simply drawing some characters in the back".
I'd appreciate a source on that, tbh.
Otherwise I call cap
@@DLAS_Official Considering the time it took for each chapter to be made, i could see it being true actually.
direct quote from Miura interview I pulled from a reddit post compiling quotes; For Berserk I do almost everything myself, the characters and the backgrounds. I only give them the toning, buildings, soldiers, backgrounds, etc. These days I let them do the ground too.
From quotes and interviews I’ve seen, it seems that Miura and his team “Studio Gaga” (5 assistants) worked more collaboratively on their manga ‘Duranki’, and during Berserk Miura took most of the workload on himself.
It seems as time went on through the later arcs his assistants took a more active role in inking and doing backgrounds, but during the early days Miura was not only drawing by himself but he didn’t even use digital.
Most of the fanbase is in agreement Berserk’s art was at its peak during the 3rd arc “Conviction” where Miura most likely did almost the entire workload for drawing the panels. Obviously he had people helping him doing inking for some panels, detail work in backgrounds, and possibly even large portions of shading at some points.
But miura did all the sketches and storyboards himself, his exhibit artwork collection after his death shows that his personal drawings were just as detailed as the manga artworks. Miura was a freak about details, it’s been spread around editors would get in arguments with him after he would go pixel by pixel upon switching to digital. Also given the long gaps between releases, it’s not out of reach that Miura did up to 75-90% of the artwork on his own.
Anyways here’s the reddit post; www.reddit.com/r/Berserk/s/kKo8OSOY9h
I highly encourage you to give Berserk a try. The first few volumes can give a misrepresentation of characters and themes, due to the author not knowing where he was going with the story at the time. However the dark tone is consistent. But this is not your basic horror, action manga it has incredible depth and the true strong point is overcoming grief and trauma, character development and the killer fucking artwork. As soon as you start to think “maybe berserk art is overrated” you get a godsent panel slapped in front of your face.
Love the content keep it up!
@@DLAS_OfficialMiura said it on an interview prior to his other work (Duranki) publications that he did almost everything by himself. And He started Duranki in hope that his assistants can improve their skill, thus reducing Miura's labor for the manga
@@DLAS_Official After you read the series you'll definitely reconsider the rating of it
Miura and araki I feel like should be in goat tier even regardless of the personal stuff you mention if you just look at the art for what it is. The Color and non color art araki does is like no other you can tell he studies all forms of arts for his works and it shows, can see why he gets the crazy fashion deals and has his art in the louv. Miura regardless of his assistant's in his personal panels and art work spreads really deserves god tier status. Dude is mind blowing in my opinion, With that said I can agree with everything Else! I love this video
I agree
I think that the tierlist is very accurate. I would just put Araki a tier higher, wouldn't say GOAT but there's lots of unique things in Araki artworks, the designs are crazy, the poses, the dynamism and color. Just cuz the uniqueness I would put him a tier higher.
About miura I think the rank is ok, the tierlist it's about the author not the assistants, so even if the final product is goat tier, miura by himself is a bit lower, still mindblowing.
I think Miura once stated that he does all of the panels himself, and said he lets his assistants maybe sometimes do the floor. 😂
Bro I thought I was the one that made this comment turns out we have the same PFP btw goated pfp 🗿🤝🗿
lmaoo@@gergiglio
This is actually true, that's why he's above Murata. But he said, art is subjective., and it was merely opinion.
@@KyleDecenathat is true, art is subjective. However, in a different comment section a person responded that Miura actually draws the backgrounds as well and the biggest thing the workers did was draw a pattern on the floor. And in response DLAS asked him to cite a source, even though he himself didn't cite a source for his statement.
Pretty sure Miura was one of the artists similar to HXH where he refused help from his assistants when it came to a majority of the art, so a majority of the art you see is very much done by him solely
That's why the update is so slow 🎉🎉

I think horikoshi should have been at the top with the other couple artists. He has shown his capabilities as an artist and I think due to his time constraints it should be taken note that he doesn't have all that much time to produce all that artwork but is still capable of doing so anyways. I think he has some of the best artwork in the main shonen jump manga even compared to all of the other great stuff.
really enjoyed hearing about your views on these amazing artists!
This video just got me into reading manga again, it's a whole new thing when you take the time to appreciate the work the artists put into them.
Nice editing and analysis, I'm glad i found this channel early
This video was amazing. As someone trying to determine what their “style” will be, being provided all of these examples of varying and amazing artists is invaluable. No matter what channel the video is on, Marcel’s stuff is always GOAT Tier
I'd love to see you have a look at some comic artists as well. especially someone like Carl Barks, THE artist behind pretty much the entire legacy of donald and scrooge mc duck comics and he was a huge inspiration for Osamu Tezuka, the godfather of manga. I'd also love to see you share your feelings on artists like Hergé or more modern examples like Lewis Trondheim. And if you do end up having a look at Barks' work, i can only recommend to also have a look at Don Rosa, he's kind of a spiritual successor to Barks and took his legacy to the next level. the amount of love and effort he poured into even just a single story is insane.
I also look forward to seeing you for the first time at the Leipziger Buchmesse next weekend. Eventhough i live in Leipzig i've somehow never visited the Buchmesse, but i plan on changing that this year :)
My favorite mangakas are Takeiko Inoue and Yusuke Murata, and I'm a huge fan of both of them. I adore their creations, particularly the detailing.

Always appreciated how togashi's designs evolve over the story, trying to show their own developments
I mostly agree with your list. I just find the mangaka responsible for Vinland Saga to be missing. I'm usually not crazy about cross hatching, but there's something about the way he does it that makes it very pleasant to look at and admire.

Thanks for the video Marcel!
Nice video man, i personally love Obata, Horikoshi, Inoue, Amano and Kubo. Obata can draw everything to look so cool, even mundane scenes just look awesome. Plus his shading and copic skills need to be studied.
Horikoshi is absolutley incredible at everything, i love his angular style and his love for hands made me love drawing them too when I first started reading MHA.
Inoue is the best of all time for me. Hands down, he's so elegant with the way he draws. A master of the basics and much, much more.
Amano and Kubo for more of the same reasons, their characters bring the "rule of cool" into full effect. I'm absolutely in love with "cool" stuff like that. Especislly how Kubo draws fashion. Made me start dressing better 😂
If you ever do a second part, think about including kamome shirahama (witch hat atelier), Naoki urasawa (monster), sinichi sakamoto (innocent), yoshikazu Hamada (tsugumomo), inio asano (goodnight punpun), toru fujisawa (great teacher onizuka), or tokinobu tatsu (dandadan)
Great video btw
love the new channel, keep going!
Always love'd Horikoshi's Art.
The art is so pleasing 😊
Same. The man is so great at anatomy, dynamic poses, faces, HANDS. Goated.
I think he should have been at the top instead of 2nd from top. His time constraints is a huge factor and despite that he produces top tier artwork. Also the guy has some of the best character designs in manga. A reason why people became immediately attached to every character in MHA (sometimes a little too much and things become toxic like what can happen with the MHA fanbase but that is a different discussion) it is due to the characters being drawn so distinctly and their designs match well a lot of the time with their own character and powers. Its all done so well but the art looks so human and enjoyable. Anyways, I just think the time constraints should have been implemented into ranking his art because he can definitely compete with the others at the very top given more time availability.
he is better than miura
@@junglejuicelover8879honestly correct.

yeaa me too
Bro I’m almost at the end and still haven’t seen Vagabond?!?!?
Edit: ok I was gonna lose my mind if it wasn’t on this list 😅 great video btw and I got to learn about some new artists so thank you 🙏
Atsushi Ohkubo is also pretty good. I love his gloomy, creepy, Tim Burton-esque, but still badass and fun type of art. His compositions in Soul Eater had my jaw dropped sometimes. Faces and characters in general where very stylish and iconic to only him. Also his Graffiti/Hip-Hop influenced artworks are just astonishingly dripped out.
He ain't for everyone, but i think he deserves a spot in your list. I believe Soul Eater even came out around the same time as Reborn. At the time he is mostly known for Fire Force, wich also features some very gloomy, almost grotesque, yet stylish art.
You should check him out if you don't know him.
Nice Video!
Hope to see this channel pop off :3
I have no idea if its true or not but I remember reading somewhere that Miura basically refused to let his assistants draw anything. IIIRC it said that he let them draw the floor and the sky and that was about it.
damn that video just really pumps up your inspiration and motivation to draw immediately
what are u gonna draw dog sex
Really great video. But I have one small critique is that you miss Atsushi Ohkubo (the artist of Soul Eater and fire force). Other than that, good video.
I'm sad you didn't mention eyeshield 21 or Yusuke Murata's other works. Dudes a legend at this point and his abilities have only become better as the years go on. He's the definition of having no limits.
my fav are sui ishida and araki, alongside fujimoto and urusawa (iam very lazy to write sensei at the end of each name but i really respect each one of them, and i like their art equally) and u are my second fav artist after them ;)
So you're lazy enough to not write sensei after their name but you aren't lazy enough to explain the reason why 😂😂

Pretty sure the assistants only did simpler things, like floors and backgrounds and whatnot. Plus, they’re continuing berserk rn and it looks really different. Like, sure they have some things here and there, but if you look at panels before Miura’s death (RIP) you can see how different it looks. Might be just me but idrk. Otherwise, I pretty much agree with the list, another sick video 👍
Why would they dedicated there live to someone's dream jobs: they don't have budget the manga is depressing and when he the creator draw it himself it takes month to update so why would they put hard effort to it?
what
12:07 Miura had 5 assistants but he only had them do minor background drawings and it only started quite recently in berserk
I love how subjective this video is. It’s a nice change of pace from other youtubers❤
I recomend you to check out Toshio Sako art, he's done 2 manga
Batuque a story of a girl learning capoeira
And a masterpice not only in the mind games but also in art(im my opinion at least) Usogui.
Especially in Usogui, maybe at the beggining I would call it.. Good, but as the story goes the art becomes better and better, and by the time of last 2 arc's the art is one of the best I've seen in manga.
And if I'm not wrong he did it all by himself, weekly.(I coudn't find if he had any assistants while working on Usogui or not, but it seems he hasn't, especially since the backgrounds are simpler to focus more on the story and characters... i think)
But if you wand to see how his artstyle evolved from 2006 to 2017, and expirence a really, really great story about mind games, gambling and action then I recomend you Usogui by Toshio Sako(539 chapters, 49 Volumes)
I love these kind of videos!!!
When you see how Hajime Hisayama improved his drawing skills from the beginning of AOT to the end, I'd put him in cold section for the beginning but clearly into goat or just below for the end
Muira didn’t get assistants until 2014 when he formed studio Gaga And published giganto maxia
I started reading manga a few weeks ago and my favorite mangaka is definitely Eichiro Oda (one piece is definitely not the only manga i read)
Edit: guys... this is my opinion, I haven't really read much Toriyama's, Murata's or much other mangakas work, although I am probably soon going to read their works, One Piece is one of a little list of manga I have read.

great list and I respect that opinion but I wouldve put Araki to the goat Tier simply because he throws all the norms of a usual manga away and redefines it. The way he makes his composition is highly inspired by the old italian masters which is why they always look so fascinating and how he colors his paintings speaks for himself. He doesnt care about the color theory at all and uses colours where you think "How can these colors even go together?". From an artistic view Araki along with Obata, Inoue, Murata etc. has reached the Top, there is almost no more room for improvement
.
Yeah i never notice this before but after seeing Araki's drawing in black and white, it really shows how gorgeous his drawing is without the colors. I agree him, Inoue and Murata are at the top of their game. Beautiful
i like how this new channel has started.....
Respect Mashima he has good stories to tell
Edens zero was more narratively focused and shines in the later arcs and it gets surprisingly dark
You need to talk about TATSU Yukinobu (Dandadan). They worked as an assistant for FUJIMOTO Tatsuki (Fire Punch) and KAKU Yuuji (Hell's Paradise), and their art is freaking amazing
For the JoJo colored manga: While official, they are not canonical. Araki has come numerous times to confirm he doesn't really considers colors that much when drawing, and thinks about them more of like a complement for the pictures than something necessary. The colored scans tend to have inumerous mistakes, such as coloring the skin of characters as if it were part of their clothes, mixing different characters and their accessories when one overlays the other, and more.
I agree with you about my fav mangaka TITE KUBO SENSEI. Hes art so relaxing to look at. Its like looking a poem but in the form of a character.
You LOVE to see the Shaman King love, the art used to be so angular and awesome in the original run. Seeing all the cool powers and cartoony expressions and dynamic poses mixed in this very early 2000s art style was so awesome to me when I was younger. And more Yoh love is always great.
I would really like to know your opinion on Kamome Shirahama's art.
Her drawings for Marvel and DC are amazing, but the art of Witch Hat Atelier is my absolute favorite. All it took was to look at the first page of the first chapter and now I'm a fan.
Disagree with a bunch, but I love how unpredictable the rankings were with a lot of these and also makes me wonder what you would think of Toshio Sako's art, since his work on Usogui is pretty much the definition of aging like fine wine, how the hell are some of these manga weekly, I will never know
BRO just read Yuto Suzuki's 'Sakamoto Days'. You just love this series "Fighting secuence", it is a "The art of action", MUST READ.
My mom and sister along with their French friends went to France one spring break, and only now I want to go just to see Araki’s work in the Louvre

No shot u actually put naruto that low under HUNTER X HUNTER, Dragon ball and fairytail that's insane lmao. Out of the big three I genuinely think that Masashi kishimoto's art is the best, not to say the others aren't amazing as well, bleach is super sick and onepiece is amazing in it's own ways as well, but naruto's art is just goated with how masashi is a complete master of perspective and form, genuinely some of the best art in Shonen IMO
just leaving a comment to support you! good video❤
Would have loved to see Q Hayashida (author of Dorohedoro) on here, her style is super unique and the artbook for that series is goated. Great video though!
I feel the same with Fujimto, his anatomy is always so stiff but it's especially prominent in recent chapters
I think most people commend Fujimoto and Gege akutami as mangaka for their creative use of paneling. I would love a deep dive or something like this video but analyzing manga paneling or sequential storytelling.
I think if you do another one of these, you should definitely include gachiakuta. Top 3 mangaka for me definitely. Its perspective, the heavy lines and story are just top teir and even underated. Also, if you want another artist, definitely do the creator of Evangelion.
Love the new channel
(Rest in peace the goat Akira Toriyama)
hii i hope you become succesful and continue your new project
Please algorithm bless this man! 🙏
Id love to hear your opinions on the BLAME! artist. Tsutomu Nihei is in this weird place for me where I absolutely adore their character design and environments, and the story is so artistically delivered. But I kind of despise the way they actually draw people. It gets way better over time and now I say that they're a part of my inspiration repertoire for my own style but by god...
Akira Toriyama is the GOAT.
He truly is
I haven't read much manga to judge the tier list but I 1000% agree with the goat tier list.
You may want to check out Yuki tabata he made black clover and does really good battle thinking if that makes sense. Uses all the characters for fights
you should review shin-ichi sakamoto, inio asano, kei urana, kaoru mori, and the legend him self naoki urasawa.
i was thinking what araki should make to make his manga better than the last, and many people believe Stone ocean is a conclusion. but, when Jojo SBR launched "shit, this vampire is insane"
DUDE NICE ONE!!!!! you mentioned Amano's art!! not enjoying her coloured art is absolutely insane to me, the loose linework and watercolour works so friggin well with her grungy boyband accessorized to hell style of drip she loved to do during Reborns run lmao.
I'd be curious wot u thought of her recent work on Ron Kamonohashi, her approach to coloured work especially has changed a decent amount from Reborn tho its still recognizably her work, its a lot more structured now and has a greater sense of realism to it.
btw if u dislike her coloured work you'd hate her manga after Reborn, Eldlive, its literally a full colour manga and while I absolutely love it for that, i have a feeling you wont lol. The begining of its run is especially my favourite period of her work, its super saturated, glossy and loose with thick outlines that just make me cum uughghurghrhgh lol
but yea I feel as though her art towards the end of Reborn started to deteriorate in a few minor places, for 1 as u mentioned, clarity, but I also think her posing became somewhat stiff and faces started to look like they were melting in a few places lol, it woz time crunch and burn out probably knowing Jumps schedule
(btw I will admit the sexy men did awaken me to my gay side, I'm thankful to Amano for showing me I like hot men lol)
You’re not missing out on much with Demon Slayer. If you want to experience it watch the anime. The art and animation puts it leagues above the manga

You should really check out Dandadan - it's made by one of Fujimoto's assistants and the art is STUNNING
I think that you should put Yunuke Nomura in the tier list what I know he is doing art for Bluelock and I think that some of the panels are really good.(sorry if my english is bad.English isn't my normal language)
A big part of Toriyama’s style is how he designed it around being able to meet weekly deadlines. Also, when he first started, he couldn’t afford screentones so he got really good at just black and white shading.
We must add Katsuhiro Otomo to the list (the creator of Akira), for me he is one of the best, I feel that his style is a bit similar to that of Kim Jung Gi
Oh great art is amazing!
I started reading death note last week and was so surprised that you start with Takashi Obata
We globally have the same art tastes, although Togashi and Toriyama are my favorite mangakas Murata and Boichi are beasts aka goats ! Horikoshi is insane too !
Hyo Asakura is indeed arguably the coolest protagonist in shonen, arguably because imo Yusuke Urameshi is a strong contender 😉
People indeed tend to confuse artistic choices with skills when it comes to realism vs stylized.
Btw what do you think of Takumi Oyama's art ?
Either way ....

My favorites are actually a lot
Eiichiro Oda with his messyness (in a good way) that really makes war looks like a real war, his worldbuilding that I will never can thought myself in any way, his choice of words (especially when we understand Japanese), and his character design that is so dynamic (pun intended)
Akira Toriyama with his perspective and his wide variety of character model
HIROHIKO ARAKI The Goat, he is the reason I don't give up drawing he is the reason how my art develop, also his character model is beautiful, don't let me start with his outfit design
Yusuke Murata, his art is literally Akira Toriyama's design with extra detail
Masashi Kishimoto with his paneling and the overall character model
Was expecting artist of kokou no hito to be here, but great video either way 👍
You need to go back and reread Naruto. Kishimoto's panelling is really good. Also even he has drawn realistic art.
Love your videos❤
What are your thoughts on Yuki Tabata's art? Especially his latest chapters on black clover
Not putting berserk in goat tier is just ridiculous
Can you make a part 2? I really want your opinions on the vinland saga, bluelock, the climber, boruto artist, urasawa(monster, 20th century boys, pluto), yuji kaku(hell’s paradise), yuto suzuki(sakamoto days), Atsushi Ohkubo(fire force and soul eater) mangakas. They really are deserving to be ranked if demon slayer is also got ranked.
I would love to hear your thoughts regarding the made in abyss artstyle
Boichi the goat, I was absolutely inhaling his manga because of the gorgeous art on every page
his females are ugly shit tho lol
Is your art style inspired by Kubo? Because I looked at some of your art and it looks very Bleach inspired.
