There's a point where older people need to give up their drivers license. I told my Dad after he had two crashes in six months that he needed to give it careful thought. He cancelled his insurance on his car and gave it to one of his grand daughters and we took turns driving dad to where ever he needed or wanted to go. He died a few years later but could have died earlier in a car crash due to his slowing reflexes and failing eye sight
I agree. My Mum was driving until she was 80. I told her that if I thought she was getting dangerous, I would stop her driving as I didn't want her hurt or her to have to live with hurting someone else. She had moved house, so she had a bus stop across the road, just in case she couldn't drive. We need to plan these things and be responsible.
Why is everyone making this dumb comment? They literally said she's surrendering her license and has a court date. She IS being held accountable. You clowns can't listen 🙄

There should be a law where anyone above the age of 55 has to do 2-3 driving test a year. You see them on the highway all the time having no clue of their surroundings 🤦🏻♂️
I’m understanding your point and why, but the age may not be the best indicator. I’m only a few months from 55 myself and don’t have any issues driving at all. I don’t know if the years I spent racing cars helped with that or not, but if I noticed a degradation in my driving skills I’d be looking for an alternative. In this woman’s case we don’t know what truly happened. She could simply be a horrible driver and always has been just been lucky before this. Maybe she is one of those oblivious types of folks, who knows ?! Hopefully the victims family and friends find some peace, and hopefully the justice system quickly and accurately does the proper job.

I know my Grandma used to pick me up from middle school. One day she pulled out onto the street at literally 1 mph. She proceeded to cut someone off but wasn't aware of it. I ended up telling my Mom about it. She soon saw for herself that my Grandma's response time wasn't like it used to be and we confiscated her keys.
Old drivers are a menace on the trust. I live in a town full of senior citizens and the majority of them are horrible drivers, scared to death. They should not be driving.
That's weird how the Vehicular Manslaughter charge is only a misdemeanor and the Hit & Run charge is a felony. Shouldn't the actual killing of someone with your car carry a worse penalty than what you do after you kill them?
Some of our elders abuse the "respect your elders" thing. A lot of them turn it into a false sense of entitlement and think they can treat people any way they want and get away with it just because they're old.
Very few of the present generation respect their elders anyways from what I have observed. I'm only 62, but my mother has been disrespected on too many occasions. I'd be a basket case if I knew I had caused someone's death due to careless driving. Not this woman, she's cool as a cucumber, even tried to cover up the evidence. She is a vile, evil person with no sympathy.
If she knew she had symptoms of dementia then she knew she was too unwell to get behind a wheel. So either way she's still responsible and it's entirely her fault regardless. The only other alternative is that it's her families fault for not taking away her drivers licence while knowing she was unsafe but let's be honest she wouldn't have admitted to them she had dementia because she's selfish and knew she'd have the license taken away. Evidently she believes her want to drive trumps another person's safety and life. She's taken a life she should have to forfeit the rest of hers to prison just like every other selfish murderer.
Doctors should be made to report patients diagnosed with developing dementia &.their licenses, etc. should be taken away. There is even early onset dementia ( in their 40's). Does she have a family? If not, there has to be some authority to stop people with developing dementia from driving. By the brain damage taking place they probably lack the ability to stop driving themselves. On the other hand, if she is faking dementia, ascribing it to her age, then she is totally culpable.
if she was driving at a speed of 30 mph then hit him and kept on driving for 65 feet at that speed...it means she hit him and then kept on driving for 1.5 seconds..it's not like she drove with him on the hood to another city..at that age, probably needs few seconds to realize what just happened
I'm in my 60's, and I know that at some time in the very foreseeable future I will have to stop driving. I haven't encountered a senior that can truthfully say they haven't experienced a decline in some factor that affects their driving, be it vision, cognition, reaction time, etc. Each of us has to step up and take responsibility for our actions. My mother and father drove into their 80s with no incidents, then gave it up when it was time. I myself am a careful driver with not so much as a parking ticket. When the time comes I'll stop too. She needs to take responsibility for her actions, be punished, and never drive again!
How does she even think for one moment she is INNOCENT?! 🤔 She hit Stephen at 30mph, causing him to be on her hood for 65 feet before "falling off?" then she drove away and left him. Later she rented another vehicle to drive again?! WTF? Really? What if this happened to one of her family members, perhaps a young grandchild? Would she possibly feel any different? *This reminds me of the time when a woman hit a homeless man that got stuck in her windshield and she drove home and ended up dying in her windshield. It was on October 26, 2001 when Chante Mallard (a nurse’s aide) hit Gregory Glenn (a homeless man at the time) while driving home under the influence of alcohol, ecstasy and marijuana. When she hit him, he went over her hood and into the windshield and had gotten stuck and in really bad shape. Instead of calling the police or going straight to the hospital, she decided to drive home and park the car in the garage with him still stuck in the windshield. That poor man stayed stuck in her windshield, bleeding and pleading for help as she checked on him several times. He ended up dying several hours later. She then turned to a friend of hers and a cousin to help her get rid of the body. Once they pulled him out of her windshield, they took him to a local park and left him there to be discovered. She would’ve gotten away with it if it wasn’t for her talking about it at a party months later. I’m guessing she was drunk, I’m not too sure but whoever she was talking to or whoever overheard her talking about it went to the police and turned her in. The laws concerning drivers impaired by age- and severe-health-related conditions having to surrender their driver’s licenses are weak af all over this country.
I was thinking the same thing. A delayed reaction time of 1.5 seconds or so. Vehicular manslaughter charge- yes. But I’m surprised at the hit and run charge.
All seniors should be required to take a driving test at a certain age. 65 or 70. I see elderly people driving who can barely even walk. But it's the car manufacturers who are against it because they just want to sell cars. They don't care if someone's an incompetent driver, they will sell them a car anyway.

Let's take this into perspective. At 30 miles per hour, you will go 44 feet in ONE SECOND! So, she traveled with him on her car for LESS than 1.5 seconds. That does not sound intentional or reckless. That sounds like what would happen. She was in shock. "What just happened to my car? Was that a person or an animal?" He was crossing an UNMARKED crosswalk? Who was in charge of marking the crosswalk? Why was it NOT marked? Was this crosswalk SUPPOSED to be marked and never got marked? If it was marked, and it was her regular driving route, wouldn't it be safe to say she would know to look around and more? What does that block look like at 715pm tonight? Is it well-lit? They know this is an accident. They know. There is more to this story than meets the eye. Prayers for the family of the lost loved one and for this lady. From what I hear thus far, it seems like this is just an unfortunate happening. Maybe her driving test will reveal more about her ability. Maybe a medication might be involved that requires her not to be operating a motorized vehicle. Those are all things that may come about. Someone, no matter what happens in this case, NEEDS TO MARK ALL UNMARKED CROSSWALKS. This goes without saying.
@@sandbridgekid4121 You must be young so I will help you out here. The failure is in communication by way of a marked crosswalk. In city areas accident-rates are lowered by increasing safety and having laws that address this issue. Jaywalking is the law that tells us to look for crosswalks or we can get fined. It is for safety in city and designated points of high pedestrian traffic. Marking the big white lines on the street show drivers that a crosswalk is ahead. They know to yield and pay more attention. If pedestrians cross at a crosswalk, then they rightfully expect drivers to yield for them. If the crosswalk is not marked, then pedestrians will cross with a higher risk and drivers expect to drive through. And this driver isn't denying the accident. She is pleading not guilty to having intent to commit a crime. Accidents are not crimes. This accident may have been preventable had the designated crosswalk been marked as it should. Please spare yourself from making judgements about people if you just don't understand what you read. Better to ask for clarification. Hope this helps you to understand.
I basically agree that if she was following all traffic rules, it's an accident, not manslaughter. But 2 issues here. Any intersection is a crosswalk whether marked or not, so if a pedestrian is already in the intersection, all cars must yield, marked or not. Second, you are only allowed to drive as fast as is safe, if darkness hampers your vision, you must slow down to a safe speed that gives you time to stop.
Pedestrians can cross at most intersections. Every intersection is not a crosswalk. Crosswalks are also not limited to being at intersections. Crosswalks are designated by the city. It is a different set of rules and they must be marked. Had it been marked, this may not have even happened.
What kind of person does that?? Could she not see the man on her hood?? Did she think he'd just fall off the car & no problem?? Has she had a mental evaluation?? Good Lord!! 😱
Thank about a football field. From the goal line to just beyond the 20 yard line. THAT is 65 feet. It's nothing. They say "65 feet" like it was a long ways to go but if she was at highway speed that means he was on the hood maybe all of three seconds. That's not a long time at all.

Why does she deserve mercy?
It's times like these there should be driving tests for the elderly. Then it wouldn't have to be up to the children of the elderly to take away the keys.
She shouldn’t even be driving at that age!!!
I’ve almost been hit by older people so many times it’s absolutely ridiculous. They drive with no lights on during night or bad weather, switch lanes without looking, and drive dangerously under the speed limit. There has to be a point where people need to re take their license test.
One of my kids and I were rear ended by a 76 years old lady, a couple of years ago. Thought the impact wasn’t that bad, my car trunk was damaged and we had some pain and bruises. I got out of my car and approached the lady but she tried to get away. There was some traffic and that prevented her to leave the scene, I told her that she had to stay there until the police would show up. She told me that it wasn’t that bad and she wanted to go home. I refused to let her go and took pictures of her license plates in case. She finally got out of her car and tried to convince my daughter to let her go but she told her nope, you are going to stay her and if you dare to leave that is a hit and run. The old lady was so surprised that a young girl told her that that she had to comply. Long story short her insurance had to pay for our car damage and our hospital bills.
I’m hurting for the poor dog who lost his beloved owner. I can’t imagine how he feels. I hope Griff is comforted and loved 💕🐾 🦴

Before you say it I have been with dogs my whole life. The dog is fine as long as whoever taking care him is giving the dog what he wants. The family on the other hand... yes dogs are intelligent creatures however stop humanizing them.

I am 80 years old. I went out tonight and ran over a curb. I just didn't see the curb while turning. I wss not drinking. When you reach a certain age, it is time to consider not driving at night., or perhaps not at all. Your eyesight dimishes, especially after dark. Condolences to all involved.
It's called Night Blindness. Your eyesight can be fine during the day but at night your eyes struggle with the darkness.
ur not 80 stfu
Not everyone ages the same. I have been driving for 65 years and I am a much better driver today than I was 50 years ago. My responce times are as good as any 20 year old. The thing is with age I have matured and know better than to tailgate, speed, or use a cell phone or any distraction. I would not care if I had to take a drivers test I know I would pass. This woman is in denial and obviously, for that reason, is a danger to the public.
probably also don't criminally feel entitled to push another driver, or cross anywhere you please at a pace for a Sunday stroll through the woods, not seeing past their noses.
And then there are people who were NEVER good drivers.
Of course, some people still have the mind to take care of their body. While the majority waste theirs with their vices.
At 66 I no longer like driving at night, no visual issues, so I dont. Being retired I can do errands during daytime. I have always said when the time comes I dont trust my driving skills I will gladly give up my license. Its accountability and responsibility, a license is a priviledge not a right. You are right dont tailgate, use cell phone or any distractions, afterall a vehicle is like driving a weapon.

I'm pretty sure it's nearly impossible to hit someone and not KNOW that you hit someone...
Condolences to his family and friends.
How did she get charged with hit and run? She might have drove 65 feet. But she did not keep driving. Like driving away until the police found her.
@@rosemarymcgrory-eb2gd ok. Thanks for the information. But you didn't have to be an ass about it.
Wow! Is there any family members there to support her? Whether right or wrong…
If she couldn’t tell she hit a man while he was on her windshield, this woman has even MORE problems than previously assumed.
The penalty for a felony fatal hit and run is only 4 years? Even if it's accidental that's a scary low punishment for taking someone's life and fleeing. It should be at least 10 years.
Thar's YOUR Justice System, for you.
People ( almost all are female ) get their panties in a bunch when you mention how a vigilante would handle this. Woosey buttercups . . .

No one should have any mercy for her. And this is why elderly people shouldn't be allowed to drive anymore...
I think once you hit a certain age like 55 or 60 you should have to go to the DMV EVERY YEAR and take the full licensing test every year. And they should make it harder and harder to pass as you get older...
Ummm…65’ is a little over half-way through an intersection.
How is that hit-and-run???
65 feet* not inches. That's like 5 or 6 intersections, and that's just how long he was on the hood for. The number would be higher had he not fallen off. She continued to drive even after he fell off. How is it NOT a hit and run?
@@1981mrdavid
Ummmm…no it’s not.
An intersection with 3 lanes of travel in each direction, is appx 130’.
A small residential intersection, with no crosswalk or stop bar, is appx 65’.
You have VERY bad perception of distance.

At her age, she should have a common sense. Stop and render aid regardless of at fault or not. Going 35 miles per hour and being able to hit someone, showed she was not cappable of driving at her age.
Age is not a factor - lying is
My grandfather caused a terrible accident. No one was killed, but he could no longer drive. What a terrible situation for this lady and the man she killed. Just so sad on so many levels.
How is it terrible for the lady she knowingly either a) is lying about dementia and drove knowingly with a human on the hood of her car blocking her view for 60 feet and drove away like the selfish murderer she is or b) she knew she had deteriorating mental health and was unsafe to drive but was selfish and entitled enough to do it anyway because she believes her want to drive trumps others safety. Either way it's all her fault and she's no better than any other selfish murderer that should be locked up. She even had the gall to claim not guilty. If it was your baby she crushed with her cat I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune especially when she's so vile she's trying to claim no responsibility despite having a corpse visibly pinned to her hood.
She looks mean and spiteful. Probably had a lifetime of denying her wrongdoings.
Justice doesn't have a age limit
disgusting after 76 years she cannot understand responsibility. if she took on the responsibility of driving she is responsible for all of her actions in the vehicle she deserves to rot in prison
The laws concerning drivers impaired by age- and severe-health-related conditions having to surrender their driver’s licenses are weak af all over this country.
Wait wait wait.... Did the reporter read this correct? A felony hit and run causing death only carries 4 year maximum prison time? WTF!
At 30 mph, you're travelling 44 feet per second. 65 feet would happen quickly.
Thank you... I was just about to say.
Agreed
That's what I was thinking...
I was thinking the same thing. A delayed reaction time of 1.5 seconds or so. If she travelled several hundred feet, it would seem malicious, but this seems legit like she stopped as soon as she noticed… which was 1.5 seconds too late. Lose the license- yes. Vehicular manslaughter charge- yes. But I’m surprised at the hit and run charge.
@@maryl8614 Think about it though a delayed reaction of 1.5 seconds. You could blink your eyes twice or happen to look at the gas gauge.
Imagine the cruelty she inflicted in her youth
All seniors should be required to take a driving test at a certain age. 65 or 70. I see elderly people driving who can barely even walk. But it's the car manufacturers who are against it because they just want to sell cars. They don't care if someone's an incompetent driver, they will sell them a car anyway.
When I worked at Mercedes Benz, this customer wanted us to look at his car because he couldn’t hear the reverse tone if he got too close to an object. My service advisor inspected the vehicle and it was working so we had the customer with us again for the inspection. We soon realized it was because his hearing was bad from age but we couldn’t out right say that, only acknowledge the blind spot monitor is there and working. The customer was furious that we couldn’t do anything to make it so he could hear the tone and shouldn’t have to turn his head to look where he’s going… and said our cars were dangerous….then got in his car and peeled off. People that old and act like that are on the road lol
I always think back to that moment where the guy was extremely rude and wished I had just told him he needs to go to a doctor to get his hearing checked lol
@@Stormnorman15
His age had nothing to do with his attitude, I bet that your customer was like that all of his life.
People don't change their mentality that drastically because of age.
Innocent?!?!?!? Innocent would mean she didnt hit that man lol this is so crazy. Throw her in jail. Old age shouldnt be an excuse for this.
Who really believes she isn’t still driving around ?
Seriously, what a travesty of justice… 😢🤬
So taking someone’s life is a misdemeanor?
How can that make sense?
Something is seriously wrong with this……
Let's take this into perspective.
There's always someone on YT that blames the victim. Sounds like you'd deny hitting someone too. WhatAboutism.
So "What just happened to my car?" ... shrug, "Oh well." No, you stop and figure it out
I basically agree that if she was following all traffic rules, it's an accident, not manslaughter.
Had it been marked, this may not have even happened.
that woman can rot in jail
So tragic and heartbreaking 💔 Prayers to the victims family and puppy
her age has nothing to do with charges...is she is competent to drive, she's competent to face the consequences of her actions
Why does everyone feel bad for older people all the time? If anything they should be held more accountable for all their bullshit. They know better
The Elderly can be very manipulative.

She had to be driving fast
Assistant DA said she was going approximately 30mph. Did not state what the speed limit was in that in zone however.
What kind of person does that?? Could she not see the man on her hood?? Did she think he'd just fall off the car & no problem?? Has she had a mental evaluation?? Good Lord!! 😱
The man shouldn’t have been on his phone watching tic tock or he might of had time to get out of the way of the car only going 30 mph
Driver’s license should have AGE LIMITS!!
No one can hit someone and not know it. Age is no excuse.
Thank about a football field. From the goal line to just beyond the 20 yard line. THAT is 65 feet. It's nothing. They say "65 feet" like it was a long ways to go but if she was at highway speed that means he was on the hood maybe all of three seconds. That's not a long time at all.
How is a hit and run that causes death only a 4 year penalty? If they stay instead of leaving it could mean life or death!
The defense is going to have to have a pretty stout defense against these charges ... there is so much evidence against that woman. Regardless, she should probably never drive again.
Nope ...
This is why senior citizens shouldn’t be allowed to drive.
I blame the DMV ...especially in Florida. My dad got renewed when he was blind as a bat and his reflexes were nonexistent! All of us were really counting on him losing his license so we didn't have to fight him, instead they gave him a reason to think we were in the wrong!🤬
