- Neighbors in the College Area say parking is a nightmare and it’s causing students to park in their yards. Homeowners are fed up with lawn parking while students say they have no other options. CBS 8 is Working for You to find out what the actual rules are.
“It’s getting more and more frustrating, it’s bringing down the neighborhood,” said Chuck Ramsey, a homeowner for 35 years on Dorothy Drive near San Diego State University. “It just looks horrible, it looks like nobody cares.”
Ramsey is tired of seeing students use the front lawns of their rentals as overflow parking areas, especially at the house across the street.
“You’ve got two cars and a boat, sometimes you’ve got three cars and a boat,” he said while pointing to several cars parked in the grass. “It’s like that up and down the street.”
According to the San Diego County Recorder’s Office, the home Ramsey has issue with is owned by an LLC. CBS 8 knocked on the door and spoke with one of the students who lives there. He didn’t want to go on camera, but said he and his roommates park that way because they have no other options.

I thought the students were parking on other peoples lawns. If you don’t like what it looks like don’t look at it.
I was gonna say the same thing. The story and headline made me think they were just parking on random peoples' lawns. Not that they were parking on lawns the homeowners were allowing them to park on. It looks terrible, but I have zero actual issue with this.
Obviously it means parking is a massive issue in the area, but until these people start parking on random lawns, they are doing what they can semi-legally.
Exactly. It is like they prefer homeless people to lay down in front of their homes or make a tent camping. People need to be real. Just down to this earth, really.
School was there first, like complaining about the airport.... Move!
That's what I thought this was about.
How soft do you have to be to be so worried about folks parking where they reside
💯 ...Seems to me the problem is this old guy with too much free time on his hands.
@@Gfresh1620and CBS 8 apparently
That's what happens when developers and planners refuse to account for inevitable population growth when designing cities. Urban sprawl is a blight on society. Blame the very zoning laws and "suburban" lifestyle you love so much. It doesn't look good but the issue should stop at that; you have no right to tell them where they can park on their own property.
All true facts
I agree. This is not an HOA area so if you don’t like what it looks like that’s too bad. Jeez…college areas support the local economy.
I wish I had so little else to worry about.
I don't think anyone is really worried about it. It just looks bad.
What a sad life you must have, lol
White Privilege
I think these kids getting an education is more important than what some pisspant neighbors think.
I think so too and there's no complaining about the kids being loud or late hours so lighten up
Mind your own goddam business!!. If its their property they can do whatever they want... unless they live under hoa
You literally took the words right out of my mouth
@@mikep303They ‘literally’ removed the words from your mouth?
LITERALLY???
They physically reached into your oral cavity and took the sound from you?
… do you even know what the word ‘literally’ means?
Well, if you watched this clip, it is actually against the law but San Diego city hall is not ticketing the violations.
Need to park somewhere. Can't blame them. Also, it's private property so they can do what they want.
Not their property not their business.
It's a (minor) code violation; people can complain about code violations.
You must be a trailer park dweller, lol
Solution: Get rid of the grass and replace it with drought-friendly gravel 😁
Or building a parking garage
If only they knew it was a college area when they moved in the area.
if only parents of those kids teach them that if it ain't public property then it is private property.
Exactly! And if it’s their private lawn, they have every right to park there.
That area has gotten much more dense in the past several years. Not just when San Diego State College change to a full-fledged University. But there's also a hospital next door, and a medical services building. And, Viejas Arena. Much more congested than even 20 years ago.
He's lived there longer than those college students! BTW...I doubt the owners of the property would be happy about the grass dying and sprinklers being broken. I get what an actual owner in the neighborhood is concerned about how junky it makes the value of their home go down. That's what happens when a corporation or LLC buys a home to rent to students; most likely, there are students living there not on the actual lease. It is a collumdrum, the university should have responsibilities regarding residential areas and their students too.
Allowing sdsu to expand. What do you expect.
That's the current state of a student's economy. Leave them alone.
dude needs to mind his own dam business
"It's wrong."
Say who? That homeowner needs to mind his own business.
First world problems...
Yes. And neighbours are reacting because they don’t want their country turned into third world country.
Come to Texas open border to the world
Pave over the Water Wasting Grass lawns
Dude needs to rent HIS lawn to students....MOOOLA!
Right? You gotta figure they'll eventually make parking available on campus in the form of a parking structure or something. Might as well make some money before the opportunity dries up.
Everyone is supposed to make you happy. How arrogant and entitled to actually believe that you are in charge of telling others where to park and how to park.
My real estate agent when we were looking at homes, "how about SDSU area?" not a chance I said.
Its the future professionals of America, let them park to get an education. Clearly, SDSU was built before all the homeowners bought their houses...😅 come on now. Give the kids a break. 😊
I lived in the College Area for 40 years. The problem is all the construction of mini dorms or what the city now calls "accessory dwelling units, ADU's. Greedy developers are wealthy people living in La Jolla or Encinitas or elsewhere are buying up properties in the College Area and turning them into mini dorms by building additional structures on a single lot and cramming as many students in there as possible. They charge a fortune in rent because they can. The City of San Diego says the lack of affordable housing necescitates the need for these structures. The problem is that poor families and other low income individuals are not the ones living there. Its college students from out of state or from another city.
These property owners that don't live in the area are destroying the tranquility of the family homes in that area. Instead of normally; maybe two or three cars to a home, 2 in the garage and maybe one in the driveway, you now have a garage converted into two rooms and those vehicles normally that would be parked there are now clogging the streets.
SDSU is a cesspool. All the ADU's that have gone up are so close to existing structures; god forbid a fire goes through there it will be chaos for people to escape and for first responders to attempt any rescue or salvage efforts.
The County of San Diego has basically tried their backs to long time residents in favor of wealthy property owners who are aggressive contributors to re-election campaigns. I'm glad I left that sewer.
Is what you don't like the fact that it's a city? Within the city, it's dense urban area with a demand for housing constrction. Do you call it a cesspool because of the number of people? Not sure where they would be supposed to go if not in the surrounding neighborhoods. Also I don't get why are you mad about small low rise apartments. It would be a different thing for tall apartment buildings, which imo also need to be allowed to be built.
Why are the developers who want to build adu's greedy? Were the developers who built your house or apartment also greedy? If not what's the difference?
We need more housing, and we need more density. Housing is unaffordable due to zoning laws that restrict housing construction, I'm sure you know this by now. So if we allow more dense housing construction, we would be able to slow the growth in prices so more people could afford to live here
So let me get this straight.... They are parking in their OWN yard? What is the problem HAHAHAHAHAHAHA PEOPLE NEED TO RELAX!
Where should they park if they live there. They need parking more than that piece of grass. Visitors I agree should park elsewhere, but if they reside in that house, they need a parking spot for sure. I believe everybody wants a parking space near their house, right?!
The city can write tickets if they want but obviously they don’t care.
Worry about your own yard
I thought it was up to the homeowners??? Smh
What wrong with people don’t like it very simple just close your eyes even you are the owner around them if someone property that is not your business sorry or maybe move to the country side in middle of no way
"he (student) didn't want to go on camera.." Cut to footage of student.
So you just randomly parking on peoples yards?
No they're parking in their own front yard it's just that the neighbor doesn't like the look of it
OCfilmfan has the answer. Remove grass and pour a four car parking spot 😮
Then you'll be fighting flood water
The college was there first? Maybe, I don’t know. But obviously student housing was not. This neighborhood got re-zoned to multiple occupant living from single family residential. When that happened the future was written on the wall.
This is what happens when rent is so high and 7 students live in a house. You have bigger problems than parking. This is a symptom of a larger issue.
I would charge students 20 dlls a day for parking in my front yard
The kids are parking in their own front yard why would they want to park on yours
@cybersal7 sure, they all live just around the corner of the university🙄. If they were the case it wouldn't be on the bews.. Duhh
Tell me why i said this is what id do if I had a house and my girlfriend said "fuck no you'll kill the grass". I'm thinking man im the one thats gonna be mowing and taking care of it smh, my grass my choice. Ima tell her that one lmfaooo
Then leave 😈😊
Is that man serious? Why don't he get a damn life! It's their home they're parking on! WHAT'S UP WITH THESE NEWS STORY TITLES? NO ONE IS PARKING ON THE LAWNS OF STRANGERS!!!! THEY LIVE IN THE HOME AND THEY'RE PARKING ON THEIR OWN LAWN!! I hate people like this always minding the business of other people!! Get a life!!!!
Park in my yard! i need the parts! and the extra money...
It does look really tacky. We live in a four-plex, the neighbors sometimes do this. I don't know why, there's parking in the street.
Mind your own business Karen
I hope SanDiego gets 4' of snow then they may complain about parking😝
It is what you can do if you're a college age 😂
Butt hurt is the title of this video.
You'd think college students would be enthusiastic to participate in the success of San Diego's Climate Action Plan, especially when they live on a transit corridor.
Parking in the front yard (or backyard) screams "low-class."
Move if you're so high class
Boo hoo.
Land of the free...pff!!
male Karens really do exist
I never doubted it.
I’ve never understood White Anger about parking
Blame Newsom and Democrats for this! Newsom wants ADUs and massive apartment buildings built on a lot that is for a small single family house. People have nowhere to park!! SDSU is I'm a really bad area!
What nonsense are you spouting about Newsom and Democrats? Nobody wants an apartment building on a lot for a single family house. That makes literally zero sense. There isn't ROOM for an apartment on that size lot.
Yes, people have nowhere to park, but that has literally nothing to do with Democrats. Do you scream "LOOK WHAT THE DEMOCRATS DID TO ME!!!" when you get a paper cut? Grow up, my dude.
Or face the facts that it all the fault of republicans.
Maybe there's too many fuc#ing cars with one person inside.
Oh on. The boomers are mad.
Boomers would know enough to type “ oh no” not “ oh on “. 😂
@@arthurbrumagem3844 lol. Guess I’m not a boomer. But a boomer would point that out.
Tow
You'd have a tow truck trespass on somebody's private yard to remove their parked car? A legitimate towing company would never do that.
It's called trespassing
The property is allowing them to park there, neighbors just dont like how it looks.
, I doubt the actual owners of the property know about parking on the grass and ruining their grass and sprinklers, or exactly how many students are actually living in the home, not on the lease.
@@debbylambert3319 Thats fair, but i was more responding to the trespassing allegation. The renters or or people the renters know are the ones parking. Its a necessary distinction as otherwise the homeowner or person living there could just get the vehicle towed away.
Since police are unwilling to enforce the law skip it. JUST TOW THE OFFENDING VEHICLES AND LET THEM DEAL WITH THE FEES
Everyone that knows you thinks you're an a$$hole
That's trespassing. you would have no authority to have a tow truck go on someone's private property and remove their car.
White Privileged San Diegans*
It really is amazing to me Americans attitudes toward what they do that is right or wrong. You have children or young adults who cannot find parking spaces so they have somehow in their liberal young brains decided that it is perfectly acceptable to park on someone’s private property and that is the homeowners fault or problem. Well I can tell you I would be best friends with all the tow truck companies and I would have those cars towed and if the people saw me having them towed I would tell them you won’t be parking there again. Have a nice day.
You need to read the article again
Here's a guy with no friends that can't be bothered to watch the video before making dumb comments
This retarded old Republican is too uneducated to read and thoroughly understand a simple news article. They cannot articulate or fathom the idea of college kids parking on their own grass on the property that they occupy themselves and pay good money to do so. Astonishing how quickly you throw everything to politics my small brained friend.
@ Mark Dowling
Why don't you just delete your weird post and save yourself embarrassment.
Actually watch the video and lower your blood pressure.
Is this an HOA community? If not, the Karens complaining about people parking on their own lawns need to mind their own business and get a life.
