This painting is number 5 of a 8 picture series about Caravaggio and his painting technique I started in mach 2020.
Here you can see a good way to start and finish a painting in the old manner.
At the beginning you paint the light with white. You need mostly 2 or more sessions with drying time between. I wait until the layers are completely dried.
In the middle of the work, you start colouring the white paint. I add the oils translucent, so you can see the deepts and hights showing through.
After this it is time for the shadow areas.
When you come to the end, you start glazing. You add only a small amount of colour to deepen the shadows, brighten the colours and bring all the tones together.
The colour palette is simply: Lead White, Yellow Ochre, Natural & Burnt Siena, Natural and Burnt Umber, Vermillion, Van Dyckbrown and Ironoxide Black.
    No blues are used.
My painting medium is fast drying oil. I take blackoil (linseed oil cooked with lead pigments) or linseed oil varnish from the hardware store. I don´t use any solvents in my paintings.
    Have fun with this video!

The aspect, that by only using white one can make such a stunning grisaille, is stunning to me.

Beautiful work once again! It is so incredible to watch these pieces take shape.
What kind of palette do you think Caravaggio would have used for his paintings? I would think it is a rather limited amount of colours.

He used a typically palette for 16th and 17th century painters. Lead white, lead tin yellow, much earth tones (umbers and ochres), vermillion, cochineal, azurite, malachite and some more ancient pigments. In my copies I use these pigments too, no modern ones.

uhm do you add medium to dry it quickly?

Can I ask what lead white you use? I've tried to emulate your technique but my Flake White (Hue) (I know its not the same as actual Lead White) just seems to smear more than being able to brush it in. Your white paint seems to have lots of body. Brilliant painting!

Actual I take the lead white from Kremer Pigmente (Germany). I also tried from Naturalpigments (Rublev Colours) and it worked already good.

Sir , what is the brown coloured substance that u use over canvas , is it simple oil paint or what ?

    • @oldmasterpaintings5070
      @oldmasterpaintings5070  2 ปีที่แล้ว

It's oilground. You can also use oilpaint, but let it dry before you paint on it.
