I totally agree with your closing notes on the topic. the idea that the flood can be cured just completely undermines the flood's narrative roll in the canon. the halo array, that is, a galactic-reset-button for life, was only used _after_ exhausting _all_ other options. if a cure is even _possible_ it immediately opens up all sorts of issues, let alone that such a cure could be stumbled into (essentially by accident) so soon after re-encountering the flood, _despite_ the fact that all the forerunner AI studying flood samples for ~100,000 years had come up with nothing. everything else in the canon practically _screams_ "the flood are uncureable." but in an effort to explain sgt Johnson's survival, they accidentally created a far, far worse issue. changing it so that sgt Johnson survived _possibly_ because what was done to him made him the least appetizing morsel at dinner, rather than making him straight-up immune, is the most elegant solution to what was otherwise a Gordian knots of plot-holes/contrivances.
To be fair, _First Strike_ was pretty noncommittal on whether or not Johnson was truly immune or whether or not a cure was even feasible. However, the idea that there _could be_ a cure was a problem unto itself - especially if Bungie had no intention to explore the concept. I feel like Bungie was just taking the possibility off the table.

@@MikoGot the problem with this is that if even 0.0001% of the population _could_ be immune to the flood, then with the tech the forerunners had (and, by extension, the tech their constructs had for 100,000yrs after the initial forerunner-flood war) a cure should have been developed. the importance _nobody_ being truly immune is it makes it clear that the is no getting lucky, and there is no cure. its one of the key factors that makes the flood meaningfully distinct from other zombie viruses
The one thing I don't like about this necessary retcon is that it requires either ONI to be excessively incompetent, Halsey to be so, or Orion to be so secretive as to be deleted from all of ONI's secret-filled vaults. Retaining this subplot should be impossible with that excuse for it happening. If anyone at ONI in the 'modern' day of Halo should be informed of the Orion project's processes, candidates, and effects, then it would be Halsey. If she doesn't immediately recognize this Spartan-I by name, she should be aware of the fake disease made as a cover story for surviving Spartan-Is. The idea that Halsey, the lead scientist in the successor project to Orion, is ignorant of Johnson entirely - especially with Cortana's and Halsey's espionage tendencies - is just silly. It's even more ridiculous than if Ackerson was unaware of the flash clones used to replace the Spartan-II candidates.
Honestly, it's so refreshing to see an actual Bungie Historian/Lorekeeper TH-cam channel instead of the other wiki copypaste channels containing the 343i "lore". Will you look into the connections to the Marathon series? I know its a humongous can of worms but its an interesting topic considering Halo CE was practically a Marathon spiritual sequel.

I have alot of problems with the First Strike, specifically out of Nylund's work, and this subplot of Sergeant Johnson was possibly the most egregious. I'm glad to learn that Bugbie did actually care to both fix this and also not erase it entirely. Avoiding valleys on bith sides of "problems with the books lore additions" and "screw the EU, onky the games matter and maybe the one book by Staten." If Bungie truly didn't like Nylund they wouldn't have commissioned him four times including once after Halo Reach. Seriously though it was ridiculous to think that you could survive the Flood just by sitting next to some plasma grenades for a while, sure you might have problems from some messed up nerves but if it's really that simple to cure the Flood the Forerunners could never have lost
Yeah I think First Strike and The Flood are by far my least favorite of the original novels, which is a real shame because I think the main games, and especially CE, could greatly benefit from having detailed novelizations and having the gaps in-between the different levels and games filled in if it was done right (looking at you Arbiter in Halo 3). Nevermind the confusing Slipspace-time anomaly bullshit with the Forerunner crystal and the Flood cure, I hate how Nylund came up with the idea that Chief rescues Blue Team and Halsey from Reach just to make sure his precious OCs don't get killed off when Bungie went out of their way to establish Chief as the last surviving Spartan. They don't need to actually die, but everyone does need to think they are dead, or at least MIA. It's like establishing Luke as the last Jedi that can defeat the Emperor and Vader, yet Luke has an entire team of Jedi Knights following him around in the background. It contradicts the entire reason why the main character is so special to not only the story itself but the characters within said story. Blue Team can easily be off doing their Reach/Onyx stuff with Halsey while also being presumed MIA. Besides, I always thought Chief just rendezvoused with the command shuttle that CE implied the survivors of the Autumn were using as an operating base and used that to return to Earth with any other remaining survivors, like Johnson. I really don't need an entire novel dedicated to answering a simple question with what could easily be a simple answer

This was absolutely excellent, Sabertooth. I honestly appreciated the nuance of the Boren's Syndrome explanation in the Halo Graphic Novel when I read it - it doesn't just remove the idea of a "Flood cure" from the table, it improves the depth of ONI's machinations in-universe. It shows that Sgt. Johnson has the integrity, cunning, and battle prowess of a SPARTAN - he's preserving the confidentiality of his own status in the ORION program, and maintaining that cool demeanor and his cover story at the same time. Halsey isn't infallible, and she's way off the mark here about what happened, but the choice she puts to John-117 still allows -him- to have his own agency and growth as a character. Master Chief's choice not to reveal the data about Johnson to the brass might not have actually mattered as much to Johnson's safety as he and Halsey feared, but it did make a huge difference in his own mindset about the people he's fighting to protect. Always a pleasure to see one of your videos. Keep it up!

I obviously don't know enough about 343's... ideas... to know what could possibly even contend with the Forerunner nonsense. I only played Halo 4 and immediately dropped it for being awful. Maybe how the UNSC/humanity has mysteriously repopulated the galaxy post-Halo 3 and has the resources to crap out the spartan 4s? And the 4s themselves? I don't know about Flood dog food but something about them being precursor space dust whose only purpose is a base 'revenge'? Because that is indeed also lame as hell.

This is amazing, and I missed the graphic novel. Really appreciate seeing this! Maybe you were just ahead of the trend, but I was mildly surprised by the lack of AI voices in prior videos. Are they worth trying out?
Flood infection has always been played a bit loosely, like there's clearly a microbial aerial component to it that causes infection but you never see the effects of that in the game, or in this comic either, it's always just shoot the walking soccerball spores before they get to you and you're good, which would make you question how the flood took over everyone, hence the aerial transmission (that the spartan's armor is able to filter out fine somehow with no averse effects) Oh, and nice editing! Glad to have another vid from you.
Please make more videos. I love hearing about Halo, especially Bungie Era Halo, and all the info on the wiki is retconned by 343 shit, and on the sub reddits they all cry about how bad the original 3 games where. You are one of the only Halo youtuber I know of that talks about the Halo I fell in love with, and not the space drama that is 343 Halo.
I love this. I disagree with you on a lot (as a fan of modern Forerunner lore I feel like I have to by default), but your love of Bungie’s Halo shines through in all of your content. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Combat Evolved is a fantastic game and the Graphic Novel is cool as hell. I believe this is the intended way to view this comic, as the original seems to rely heavily on you knowing the sound effects and story from the game. This is fantastic work and I hope you recreate more from the Graphic Novel (The Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor is my personal favorite and I think that would benefit from added Halo sound effects).

I really enjoy the insane quality in editing and scripting you put in these videos. Superior pacing(I thought “it’s over all ready?” even when watch the 1.5 hr videos 😂). And dude the animations make things so much easier to understand!
Huge project idea, but I’d love to have a video that explains the whole story of Bungie’s Halo trilogy to send to friends that are either new to Halo or just never really understood the story before.

Flood infection has always been played a bit loosely, like there's clearly a microbial aerial component to it that causes infection but you never see the effects of that in the game, or in this comic either, it's always just shoot the walking soccerball spores before they get to you and you're good, which would make you question how the flood took over everyone, hence the aerial transmission (that the spartan's armor is able to filter out fine somehow with no averse effects)

I love hearing about Halo, especially Bungie Era Halo, and all the info on the wiki is retconned by 343 shit, and on the sub reddits they all cry about how bad the original 3 games where. You are one of the only Halo youtuber I know of that talks about the Halo I fell in love with, and not the space drama that is 343 Halo.

I love this. I disagree with you on a lot (as a fan of modern Forerunner lore I feel like I have to by default), but your love of Bungie’s Halo shines through in all of your content. If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that Combat Evolved is a fantastic game and the Graphic Novel is cool as hell.
I believe this is the intended way to view this comic, as the original seems to rely heavily on you knowing the sound effects and story from the game. This is fantastic work and I hope you recreate more from the Graphic Novel (The Last Voyage of the Infinite Succor is my personal favorite and I think that would benefit from added Halo sound effects).
