- Vintage series: DSS1. Canali midi IN-OUT-THRU. Altre specifiche tecniche sono facilmente consultabili in rete presso i siti specializzati in synth vintage.
Except where the M1 had a crappy non-resonant filter, this has a real analog filter with resonance and even a switchable 12dB/24dB slope.
I still have mine, bought in 86
Me too, showroom condition.
I still have mine, bought (I think) from the guy who bought it new in ‘86! I didn’t buy it in ‘86 because I was two years old and thus didn’t have the dough.
I never was interested into KORG synths... now I see what I've missed. You just bought me with this review, I'm thinking about getting this machine. Thanks!
I had a Korg DW-6000 back in the 80s. I took the filter for granted at the time, but now in hind-sight I realize how amazing it was and wish I hadn't sold it.
Fourth time I am listening to this demo. The guitar is amazing. Best DSS1 demo on the internet, thanks!
Had one of these back in '95...big AF. It was my first sampler and only piece of equipment at the time. I learned it inside and out. Wish I still had it. I remember I had a pretty good piano patch and some sick swells.
love those vintage sounds
Yes 😊
The _filter_ on this thing. Daaaaaamn.
I did not use mine for many years now. After this video i decided to sell it NOT! The "guitar" sample is very "eighty" - I love these sounds they do not sound like a real "drummer" or "piano" or whatever. thanks for uploading this. I use the imitations of real instruments, too - but you cant work with a VST in the same way as a "real" synth. You don´t get the same sounds. I prefer to work with both! I bought my DSS-1 in 1986 new and still have it. I payed about 4000 DM for it. If I would try to sell, I think I did not get much more than 200 €. Maybe my son will have a treasure in 20 years. (like a 1962 Stratocaster ??? ;) )
These are becoming more and more sought after
Some advertised for around 1K already...
come to think of it, this arrived before the M1 and The Wavestation.. ahead of its time
Kevin Moore (ex-Dream Theater) added the DSS-1 to his signature DW8000 back in their best days :)
my first sampler! very good demo. thanks
I can't believe this only has 256K of sample memory.
iTweak0r * - believe it or not, that works out okay in practice. This thing can make a lot of different sounds out of that amount, and if you have a working floppy drive and most of the free sounds out there, you can build quite the library.
I wish those 256K of memory weren't volatile, though. Having to load the sounds every time you turn the thing on gets pretty old.
The samples are only 12 bits, so that leaves space for up to about 174000 samples, or 5.4 seconds at 32 ksample/s, or 21.8 seconds at 8 ksample/s.
If you split samples on 5 keyboard ranges, you have about 1.1 second of sample at 32 ksample/s, enough for an attack and a loop. The rest of the magic, are the analog filters and digital effects.
@Synthsound1 Thanks for your comment. I think Dss1 makes still beautiful figure. Powerful bass sounds, nice leadsynth... many musicians look for them...
Hi, jack
The Korg DSS-1 patch "Square" was heard in the covered song on Kids Incorporated "Who's Zoomin' Who".
a hidden gem, an artifact from the past, present and future, a timeless machine
So nice gritty sound! It reminds me the good old not-perfect sounding samples on the retro game consoles like a Sega MegaDrive 2 / Genesis. IAnd I still love it =)
A very underestimated synth/sampler. Nice demo. Thanks.
In the cover version of The Finer Things on Kids Incorporated and in the ending theme of Sonic 3, the Korg DSS-1 internal patch “Metal” was heard.
Great sound design,I loved hearing the Genesis at 11:50 ,nice solo improv too. Respect.
Ciao
oh god that sounds good. the fatness, brass, and stereo delay are killing me
The pick guitar is amazing
You need a blank formatted floppy in the drive (or a disk where you don't mind overwriting a patch), then just save the sound to disk, and your patch information, as well as the samples that it uses, will be saved to the desired patch number in the current "system". Make sure if the disk is not blank, that you have enough sample space to save the samples/waveforms. Also make sure to choose "Save System" instead of just "Save Program" as this will ensure the samples get saved (not just patch).
Sounds fresh modern and cool!
What a great demo thanks for sharing! i would love to hear more!!! , This is my favorite Korg keyboard of all time.
Thanks for the nice demo. Man I had one and sold it.One of the best synths ever for sure.
@IHaveSynthed Thanks for watching!!!!! My favorite korg is oasys... :-)
Jack
This was a GREAT demo -- thanks for posting it!
Great demo, finally one that does the DSS-1 justice ;)
How I fear the day that mine will break...
It's been sitting in a flight case for some years now, but every now and then I pull it out, just for THAT brutal bass :D
And hey, the watcher excerpt - I see you got good taste in music ;)
...semplicemente eccezionale!...
Ooh, the sound at 8:49. I love that. 9:14, 12:10 are real interesting too.
Been trying to get program ideas given my samples and such. This is helping. :)
Great demo. Beautifully shot.🎉
So Powerful!!! That’s all!! Nice!
12:58 - oh my, that sound
Premiata Forneria Marconi :) Fantastic!
awesome machine!
The Korg DSS-1 patch "Square" was heard in the Kids Incorporated song "Bad, Bad Trouble" and the Korg DSS-1 patch "Fantasia" was heard in the covered song on Kids Incorporated "Prove Your Love".
I learned a lot about modwheel handling from this video, thanks! :D
Some of the M1 samples come from the DSS-1 library, though.
Amazing machine !!! ;D
Wonderful demo, powerful synth/sampler, i'm very surprising by the sound !
that sure has a nice character to it
thorough demonstration!
Sounds fresh! Love it!
Excellent Demo of the DSS-1. If you run across a DSS-1 for a low price, even if the disk drive doesn't work, you might consider buying it just for the midi controller capabilities. It is one of the cheapest keyboards that you can buy with aftertouch. Plus, even if you like pitch and mod wheels, the lever is better in some circumstances.
sounds great and classy! thanx!
wow underrated defo cool sounds :)
I was looking to buy a vintage 80s sampler, like an Ensoniq Mirage, or one of those Akai racks. Now I'm considering this, but I'm wondering if the DSS has all the sampling posibilities that those machines have. Is the DSS-1 a real sampler, or a synth that's also good for sampling?
Great demo - thank you
these presets are amazing
Ahh....first two keyboards I owned -- this one and the Yamaha DX7IIFD
intenselan Oh how I dreamed of owning both back int he day. (& also the Korg DW8000 & Roland D-50)
What do you have now, Gerry? I still own the DX7IIFD, the Korg X3, Korg Karma and Korg Triton Extreme.(heh, see a pattern?). I used to have access to a Crumar Orchestrator, and you could smell the 70's on it. heh. I also owned a Roland JV-35. I've played a D-50...nice Rhodes EP on it! Gotta LOVE the 80's!
intenselan A pattern? Hmmmm, you like Korg I think? hehehe. So do I, & always have. The Triton Extreme is another synth I'd eventually love to own. (my Triton is 1 of my favorite synths) In the past I had an M1 & 01/Wfd. (& Roland D-10) Currently I own the following synths, keyboards, drum machines, & assorted gear.
*Access:* Virus TI2 desktop
*Alesis:* D4, DM-Pro, Fusion HD6, Micron, QSR

Impressive I must say! I always wanted a Korg O1/W. Keyboard magazine was like the Bible back in the pre-internet days. You have a lot more equipment than I do or ever did. I have an Alesis SR-16, Boss BR-1180CD, and various MIDI programs on my PC like Cubase and Cakewalk at various times. Nothing like your setup to be sure! That's why it's fun to collaborate, not only do I get serious talent to make our music better, but they usually have better toys than I do! Always good to meet another Korg enthusiast.
Gerry No How's the Fusion for sampling stuff and gigging? I want to get one and put combo organ samples into it. I think it'd be great since combo organ is a pretty basic sound and is already divide-down oscillator based.
great demo, great synth
On 1:48 I hear the introsequence-sound of 'Universal Nation'(Push). I wonder if Dirk Dierickx used a Dss-1 on that track?
Bohemoth of a synth,sounds nice!
With all the space around the panel I could easily set my tablet, MoPhatt, Mopho, Microzwerg, Fatman, Paia 2700/4700 in a rack, etc on it, I don't need all that extra stuff taking over my bedroom lol
Lead sounds so good.
@Chrisssss92 thankyou Chrissssss92! Have fun with Dss1 ! Good music, my friend...
I hear this DSS sound everywhere again...
....well that's what I coined it since its return. I understand it now comes straight from computers instead of from synths, but any midi piano is still being used to input melody data into the computers, but it's the computers that have the actual sounds such as voice and vocal singing samples.
this is very cool :) my father bought one of it when it was brand new and now he give it to me, because i wanr ru learn it too :) and i like it very much :) and you play very good :P
excelllent sound
Tutto Bene! FANTASTICO!
GRAZIE (for this demo)
:-)
I heard a little Tony Banks (Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies" intro) starting around 11:55... :)
@Andrij09 both ! 90% factory preset, 10% my patch/samples... :-) Thankyou for watching!
El monstruo, del bosque acecha.
Gracias.
thanks from uruguay the land of cumbia and fubol
Aaaand Cannabis! ^^
are these patches available for download?
Was the first tune you played after the intro from OSI? I recognized the chord progression. One of the best sounding synths from the 80's for sure! Nice Job!
Fantastic, Man!
Marvellous !!
@pHr33kAcHu thankyou for watching! :-)
my first synth!
Who would not love a DW-8000 (and some more) which could sample? ❤️❤️
How many seconds can this record in mono?
Wow :) Watcher of the Skies from 11:28 :) Nice one.
@sEIGu yes, i know... thankyou for watching! :-)
The floppy on mine just died. It still samples and sounds like a beast, though.
grande Jack
@480Reggae Google search with words "korg dss1 sound free download"... a lot of audio material ! :-) good music
ryderwayland - It's a sampler/synthesizer, so there's no built-in piano sound, but plenty of sampled piano diskettes to load.
hi jack i love the sound at 3:00 evocate string is it possible that i can get the sample? or full dump of the sound from the dss1 ? or can you tell me how to get this sample? many thx!!
Excellent demo! Do you have these sounds available to download?? I have a DSS-1 and would love to play them.
You can buy replacements online, and it's not a big deal to replace them. Google it.
Hey guys, I'm just completely lost on the data structure of this beast? How do you save a full patch? For example, say I have 6 samples mapped across the keys; how do I save this entire setup to be recalled on my demand?
corc7614 opp
do i hear shades of Premiata-Forneria-Marconi?
It does if you have a disk with piano samples on it!
Very nice VOX sound at 11:51.
@javiceres Uhhhh! It's a problem.... :-( After waveform drawing, you can apply parameters value...
I bought one of these at an estate sale, but the floppy drive is broke. When I press the keys, I get no sounds. Is it possible to test this without a working floppy drive?
@Andrij09 thankyou... :-) good choice!
che macchina!
The DSS-1 is one of the best Synts/Sampler on the Planet. I have it!!Yeah!!!!
Please help me.I need more Sounds.Where can I download Sounds for the DSS-1
That musette sample at 8:16 is pure gold! Where did you find it? I've been trying to recreate it on my DSS-1 from various musette samples, but none of them come close to this tone
What kind of disks do you use? A friend gifted me a korg dss1 and dont know how to buy the disks, i checked ebay but barely found anything
+Ben Young You can download them. I can't search at the moment, but there are DSS1 resource sites with disk images.
@Andrij09 No.... introduction music by GarageBand.... :-)
IN WHAT SONG OF VANGELIS ENIGMA OR JARRE CAN WE HAEAR THIS BEAUTY???
