The 42 folds of a piece of paper seems about correct, given that a piece of paper is 0.1 mm thick (0.0001m) we could derive 2^(x)*10^(-7) where x is the amount of times we fold the paper, and the answer will be given in km. when x=41 we get 219902 km but the distance to the moon is 384400 km, but when x=42 we get 439805 km which is more than enough to reach the moon. What's perhaps even more interesting is the fact that when you have folded the paper 42 times, given that the length of a A4 is 29.7 cm long the length of the paper would be approximately 0.000141620 millimeters or 141.62 nanometers. The papers length and width would be around a thousandth the width of a human hair.

That can't actually be true... Even at 10m sq it doesn't quite work, but make it 100m, or 1000m, or as larger as necessary.

How does it work though?
velliz_ well a piece of page is about 0,01 cm high. if you fold a piece of paper it would now be twice as thick as it was before so about 0.02 cm high.
The famous question is this: how many times would you have to fold this paper onto itself to reach the Moon? if I fold the piece of paper twice on itself, it’s not three, but 4 pages thick so 2^2 = 4 papers it´s 0,04 cm high. If I fold it a third time, I’ll see that it’s 8 pages thick so 2^3 = 8 papers and it´s 0,08 cm high. By the time you've folded your paper in half 10 times 2^10 =1024 piece of papers and is about 10 cm. If you fold it 42 times it will reach the moon 2^42 = 4398046511104 papers.
