Exactly... as a Christian myself I don't think that's the weird part, rather the weird part is how they are maintaining their belief system while in such close proximity to the events which clearly spawned it and are 100% non-miraculous. Kind of like how the Jews and Romans viewed Christianity when it got started. It has this aura of respectability now due to age, but at the time it was as if (say) people in the Middle East began worshiping some random guy who got shot by the Americans after being denounced as a terrorist by a local collaborator. When I first discovered this cult years ago my first though wasn't it was bizarre. I just thought this is probably the most "almost true" religion and what they are waiting for is probably the most likely to happen compared to the equivalent of other religions (I can foresee an aircraft forced to have an emergency landing, in such case an open field in the form of a fake airstrip is way better than dense jungle). In a way at Gimli go-kart track happened just that and they weren't even trying to attract any airplane to land there.

Exactly... as a Christian myself I don't think that's the weird part, rather the weird part is how they are maintaining their belief system while in such close proximity to the events which clearly spawned it and are 100% non-miraculous.
Kind of like how the Jews and Romans viewed Christianity when it got started. It has this aura of respectability now due to age, but at the time it was as if (say) people in the Middle East began worshiping some random guy who got shot by the Americans after being denounced as a terrorist by a local collaborator. That's what it would seem like to the Romans. It's understandable that some locals would be upset and maybe start a cult, but why would some Americans (Romans) join in, especially when the story is based on such a relatively mundane series of events, regardless of rumors that the dead guy somehow got better a few days later? Very weird.

When I first discovered this cult years ago my first though wasn't it was bizarre. I just thought this is probably the most "almost true" religion and what they are waiting for is probably the most likely to happen compared to the equivalent of other religions (I can foresee an aircraft forced to have an emergency landing, in such case an open field in the form of a fake airstrip is way better than dense jungle). In a way at Gimli go-kart track happened just that and they weren't even trying to attract any airplane to land there.
Could you actually imagine how those tribes must of felt when one day they were just chillin on their island when huge flying machines started going overhead, giant boats bigger than small islands started sailing by, and the people had weapons that could kill the strongest warrior in one second.
