Nice Video! I found the same model Snapper at the curb. It would start and stall. I took the carb bowl off and cleaned out and the jet. Inside the carb bowl was the round metal slug from the hole in the bowl inside. I took that out and cleaned up and runs fine. Thanks for your video.

This is the exact same engine as our John Deere lawnmower has. It’s hard to start and it’s the valves. It take 9 very good pulls to start with starting fluid lol. I didn’t know you had a video with our exact engine in it so we finally gonna do the valves! Our mower is 13 years old and we hope it can go for another 13! Thank you for making wonderful videos! I have the commercial type self propelled hyvac mower. Had it a number of years. Thanks for the video 👏👍🏻🙋🏻‍♂️💪🦾🗽😍 10-14-2022
Last Saturday from that date, it started on first pull after priming. Mowed 1 strip about 20’ long and it died. I failed to throttle it up, but it won’t start. It seemed a little hard to pull cord. Put new spark plug. But didn’t help. My mechanic had rotator cuff surgery 2-1/2 weeks ago, and he’ll be out of commission for a while. I don’t have those feeler gages. So, I may take it to another mower repair shop.

My chipper/shredder has a B&S OHV horizontal engine, and my Ariens 2-stage snow blower has a Tecumseh OHV horizontal engine, both from around 2008. Both still start reliably and run well, so my answer is "never", or "not yet". I will probably check the snow blower engine in the spring. Lately, after seeing so many YT videos recently of outdoor equipment engines that are OHV and are out of spec, I am thinking that the equipment might work better and last longer by keeping things in spec.

makes you wonder why the OHV complications when a side valve would do nearly as well.
Is there really that much more efficiency in that design to justify the added clearance checks? For a walk-behind mower in the 4-6hp range, I'd consider it undesired complexity.

My mower became impossible to start. It was the first one I had owned that was OHV. This was before I started watching mower repair videos, so I was stumbling in the dark, and didn't yet know to check valve lash. Somehow, I did it anyway, probably because I was out of other things to check, and it started right up; just like in this video.
So, anyway, I, for one, didn't have any idea that this was a thing to check, much less keep up with. I imagine a lot of other mower owners are the same, and either replace the mower or pay to have it repaired.
I've never seen this problem with a flat head, yet it seems fairly common with OHV. Do the rocker arm bolts just vibrate loose with use, or what?

I think that engine is the Intek, which I consider to be their attempt to take the very good Quantum flathead engine and make it an OHV. I personally would rather have the Quantum. The flatheads had a better tolerance for operating in rough conditions. They withstood misuse and abuse much better because of their flathead design wasn’t so picky. Cam pushed Tappet, Tappet pushes Valve, heavy spring pulls valve shut. Simple. OHV means Cam pushes Tappet, Tappet pushes push rod, push rod pushes rocker arm, rocker arm reverses direction of force to push valve. More parts to wear, more places for things to go wrong, weaker springs , all made lighter and weaker to cut weight. An ordinary homeowner could own a quantum powered lawnmower for 10 or 15 years and never put enough hours on it for the valve train to need adjustment. Even it oil changes were neglected, the quantum kept going. The principle of KISS definitely applies here.

sure, I usually put a screwdriver, into the spark plug hole, and push it in, as for as it can go, then I reach under and turn the blade, and you should feel the piston respond to you turning the blade.

Your engine model type and code are on the valve cover or stamped on a piece of metal above the muffler, put the model and type in parts lookup (such as partstree) if you still can't find the right filter, send me the engine info and i will look it up thru the Briggs & Stratton dealer only lookup which is up to date and current and give you the air filter number. as for adjusting valves, no need to check them, only adjust them when they are suspect with a problem. Most Briggs engines built after 2009 (2010 to current) use RTV instead of a gasket, push mower engines, the smaller ones do still use gaskets, 10hp and over use RTV.

Valve guide wear causes oil use issues, and does not cause valve timing issues. Valve adjustment causes bad valve timing and makes hard to start issues and lots more fuel usage, and if the valves are to tight it will cause blow by and may burn the valves. I see lots of issues in my shop with people trying to adjust their own valves and do it with the piston out of sync. Thanks
