This is without a doubt the best instructional video I've ever seen covering the basics of a proper golf swing. I really like that while you talk, you demonstrate. I quit watching other golf instruction videos because the instructor just talks talks talks while holding a club and obviously like the sound of their own voices. Sorry, but it's true. This is an excellent video!!!!
I'm 70, a lifelong skier, started golfing in June 2020, 3 or 4 times per week, with used clubs borrowed from my sister. Two weeks ago I bought an (apparently) cheap set (Tour Select) from Good Will, $5 per club and noticed an immediate improvement (the borrowed ones were all miscellaneous). I watched your video last night and went (9 hole) golfing today on the most challenging of the five public courses in the city. While attempting to turn my body more and keep my left arm straighter, on the 1st tee I totally flubbed it getting 20 yards 45 degrees to the left and I thought, I should have gone to the driving range beforehand, ha ha. BUT, on the next 4 tees (and on maybe 3 subsequent holes) the ball flew straight down the fairways farther than ever before, over 150 yards which up to then had been my absolute limit. Thank you.
11:43 Best "hands/wrists at address" tip...Thankyou Clay! This key setup component is barely covered anywhere on the youtubes. Made HUGE difference to my whole swing. Legend!
Clay, this video is so helpful, it is just insane! Been playing for about 20 years with a 12 handicap - but this year I am committed to improving all aspects pf my game, beginning with the backswing. Your video (watched 5 times) followed by some range work has really improved many aspects of my shots - distance, control, accuracy.....and confidence! I will continue to follow you. Your video is....well, genius! Congratulations!
Clay , I have many questions but I think you answered the ONE that I searched for on Google yesterday ! As a long time teaching professional , all I can say is that I taught the correct orientation of the backswing with the ball to my students but my own swing was always based on an arm swing and getting the club on the ball which I did pretty well , I was told . My question , : what do the PGA Tour players do in the backswing with the driver that lesser players don’t ? Your answer : “ every thing moves toward ball on the backswing ! “ I’ve been moving everything AWAY from the ball , if that makes sense , always a too flat backswing with a horizontal shoulder turn which makes it real hard to hit it solid especially under pressure ! Also , I noticed your wide stance , so I stepped wider to the right with the right foot at address and worked the whole left side toward the ball on the backswing , awesome , that’s my new , correct body swing ! Thanks Clay , keep em’ comin ‘ , John
Clay the Chopping Drill is one of the teachings you have done. Today I used this technique to really get an idea how far I can rotate the hips , chest and shoulders. I was able to rotate more than I thought I could because of your chopping drill. I was hitting the irons solid and woods and Driver solid. Plus I got terrific height with 9 iron. Great Drill
@@TopSpeedGolf I plan to get on a golf course and play best ball . It will be the first time in 30 yrs of me playing golf due to injuries from 3 car accidents. I feel good now and will give a shot . I watched your video on 3 things to keep in mind when playing golf. I will remember those when I go play next week. I feel blessed that I can swing a club without pain
I was watching the Jack Nicklaus YT video he made back in the 1980's and some of the techniques you use, he was doing back then, which proves it is the RIGHT WAY. He explained it in more simplistic terms, but its some of the same methods to hitting the ball correctly!
I followed your tip on making sure to bend the knees on the backswing to allow the hips to open up on the down swing. This was a total game changer - my head is now level, I can open up my hips, my ball flight is higher, and ball goes farther. Thank you so much! This was the one thing that was making me stuck. Now, my swing looks like a prototypical golf swing. I'm ecstatic!
Clay is one of the best online golf instructors....he tells it like it is....and that is a lot of practice at a gradual pace that works...for me I am constantly wanting to go back to my old swing where I feel more comfortable rather than letting it go and have the courage to work on it...even if affects my score on the course...because if I do it right and my work begins to show results it’s the best payoff I can get and really enjoy the game more...
Hi Clay, this will be my 21 year trying to play golf, all most 90 years old, all the lessons that I have taken I have now learned more just by watching 0ne of your CD. Thanks
Absolutely addicted to your channel Clay. I stopped playing golf about five years ago (a former 10 handicap but five major surgeries put the brakes on things). I’m getting back into golf and your videos have not only help me dust off the fundamentals I once knew but advance my skills. Thanks for the excellent quality and for just being a being a gentleman as you teach what you know. Keep up the great work!
Really good mic. Barely heard the mower. Great easy to internalize information and spot on. Came back to make this comment and everything I tried from your suggestions worked beautifully. Big thanks!! 👍🏻😎👍🏻
just had 1st video in 6 yrs what a shocker! Ive got a terrible takeaway closed, cramped whipped inside but from then on I get better and better! Striking it best ever and shot 2 over! Hoping that your great tips in this video will take me to the next level.
Clay.... Great video. I watched this and the video on hitting behind the ball last night and took it to the range today. I've not played more then 2-3 times a year over the last 6-7 years. Prior I was a consistent 79- 83 player. I've been going to the range for 9 of the last 10 days and hitting the behind the ball constantly. Hit the ball flush about 95% of the time today. I was swaying and not keeping my left arm straight ..... just a few tweaks and from your instruction and everything fell back into the slot. Thanks..... your teaching style is great.
Wow!, how solid that backswing feels, you can feel everything falling into place without thinking too much. Even the downswing checkpoints fall easily into place. Many thanks Clay!
Clay! This is a very well structured and delivered golf lesson!! You and I kinda do the same type of work, I’m a flight instructor and I know first hand what it is to come up with ways to introduce new concepts and have them “stick”. You are at the right place. Congratulations and thanks for helping me with my game!
yeah...Ive been watching alot of golf videos and some of them are so stupid. This guy does a good job of describing the physics and mechanics in a way that useful
Just wanted to thank you Clay . I've never hit my driver more than 260 yards in my life . I hit the ball 270 + twice in one round today barely implementing your methods . I can't wait to see what happens when I watch more of your videos .
Excellent Video Clay. I really liked how you said to rotate your shoulders more to keep on similar plane as knee and hips. Very helpful for me where have some minor degree of clapse at top of swing. This solves my problem and great swing key for me! Thanks. You are a great teacher of golf!
Fantastic lesson . Helped me so much. In understanding what I am doing wrong. I have had the reverse K all my golfing life, I am only now understanding how to correct it, This helps greatly. 🙏🏻
Clay, you are a great coach. I love listening to you break down the swing and tell why things work or don’t. Many thanks. I am a member of TSG and I love it.
Brohammer!! Keep up the excellent videos. In the tub drinking some rum becoming a golf master. But seriously, best TH-cam instructional videos I have found. Just started playing a lot ( respectively) but needed some kind of help. One of the first videos I watched gave me some great insight. And down the TH-cam wormhole I went. Great work bud.
Thank you so much, you’ve helped me considerably, I’m 62 and have only played a few months, but I’ve put your lessons to use. I’m getting longer drives, not like you, but for an old guy , it’s making it more fun to play
This is really good advice. Backswing has a lot to do with when you slice the ball. Going over the top. What changed my game was slower tempo, stronger grip and not getting my hips & body ahead of the ball. It’s knocked 10 shots off my game at least.
Watched a couple of your videos now. Your explanation of feel, and motion is excellent. Been working on this for a week straight now and I’m noticing differences. I love your consistency between videos too!! Everything stays the same. Definitely have suggested others to learn from you and wish I lived closer to get a one on one lesson. Keep it up!! Many are enjoying the game more because of you
Thank you!! It is by far the clearest and most complete video I've seen about it! Many things you explained made a lot of sense to me. I naturally have a long swing with a late wrist break, and when I tried to shorten it or make a premature wrist break resulting from a disaster for my swing! I stay calm and will continue to work in consistency and no more changes in my backswing! Thank you very much for demonstrating the wrong swings and making so many hits. Greetings from Chile!
This is a great video, I don't have a lot of flexibility at my age and would fight to make a full turn which led to swaying in my backswing. When I stopped worrying about getting the club to parallel and just made a good shoulder turn all of sudden I was hitting my driver longer and also much straighter because I got rid of the sway. Thanks again for the video.
Thank you Clay. Good and simple way to understand your teaching technical tips and understand golf swing concept. Great help. Once again thank you . Cheers
I have a hard time figuring out out how to get hips out. N leaving face open. Or feeling like my face is open. I'm changing my swing watching all your videos. Great job. You make it easy to learn
Hi clay, another fantastic video, clear instruction and great advice once again. I'm sure you must have been looking at video of my swing because you have just about captured every fault that I have! Keep up the good work, look forward to seeing the next one.
I think most of us are more athletic than we give ourselves credit for. If you've never done speed training before, it's an easy way to gain significant clubhead speed in a short period of time. The 20 Minute Distance Fix Course available to our All Access members covers this very topic (neural adaption) and the average gain after going through the course is 13mph. No weights, no stretching, just 20 minutes per day, three days a week, for three weeks. If you're ready to purchase the membership and get started with this course, just use the quick link below because you can sign up in about 1 minute: topspeedgolf.com/pick-all-access-plan/ Best of luck! Thanks for this video. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything about: - Using the ground to create / store / release energy - Not moving the head too much (swaying / turning) which would've been a good beginning / end to the journey through the different areas of the swing / body? Those can be important areas to focus on too when looking at the swing.
Hi clay great vid. I like to think hands level with heels on the top of the backswing and the throughswing. Also flat left wrist backswing, flat right wrist in the throughswing. Use the sklz swing trainer to help.
Great Videos! Got back into the game after a two year injury and wanting to start over at 53 years old and 30 years of mediocre golf. Also, my son is getting into the sport. Between your awesome techniques and explanations, handicap went from a 13 to 10 to now a 6.5. A lot of work but thats part of the enjoyment!
Hi Clay - great video. One comment - when I first started golf I used to suffer from swaying and reverse pivot because I wasn't turning around my spine. Instead I was lifting my club with my hands and arms. Also, by not rotating my hips correctly and maintaining hip depth I also suffered from early extension. Once I understood how to turn my body more or less correctly I started playing better. Now I'm a single handicapper but wish someone had shown me the correct way to turn and saved me years of poor golf. Thanks again.
Excellent video Clay I have been setting the wrists wrong and this has corrected my swing with the outside club set at pallerell, added tons of power with rebuilding ...thanks again your videos have totally helped with consistency and power ...awesome bro...
At about 8 mins you mentioned - 'Muscle Memory', the good news is that you spelled out step by step and the challenge of moving from Living Room to Driving Range to Course... Thats a plan I can deal with and forgive myself for if it stops working 15 mins after the Range.... I'm the Greatest in the city, when I watch one these videos, practice in back yard, step outside to the park - Wow - This works! Then it goes away by time I drive to course...
Hi Steve, you probably just need to get in more reps. I would try to hit a ball or at least a practice ball as much as you can when you're practicing. This will help you translate it to the course. Best of luck! Quentin | TSG Instructor
producer of great feedback. I also like how you talk about how the best way to extend is to turn your chest and shoulders fully. So much simpler! Keep up the fine content.
Great content as always. I like how you dont break it down almost into quarter sequences. Instead you have a drill where it is three simple moves. Half way back, pressure the left side, extend straight through in a straight line. Of course there is rotation but the thought of a straight extension forces proper rotation. If the club extends properly, then the motion had to be correct! That is why a golfer's follow through look is a
Clay, great video with easy to follow instructions. One suggestion, after you hit the ball, could you reply in slow motion so we can follow what you just talked about? It would certainly help me notice the small details of your swing. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Just started watching your videos. Clay you are awesome. Your videos are extremely helpful and are easy to understand. Definitely taking your tips and drills to the range. Oh and I’m right around the corner from you at Alaqua Golf Course.
Thank you Clay!!! Shoulders shoulders shoulders... Driver, Irons and putter. Let your shoulders lead the way, and your bogeys will fade away!!! LOL Question for you clay. Is it alright for me to crack my wrists just before my back swing? Also my first 3 inches of my back swing are really quiet after that. Meaning slow. Do you think this would cause me to not be as consistent? As it seems some rounds I'm coming down to hard on my swing. Awesome golf lesson looking forward to some more.
Thanks Clay for all the videos! Have been struggling with my back swing a year or so now, and your videos, this and driver specific, have been a massive help getting back on track! Keep these videos coming as the community fully salutes you sir!
This video may have permanently fixed my swing! I have been looking for that one tip that would do it and this video did it! Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! As a beginner I can start now start finding the range for each one of my clubs!
I've been off with back pain for 2 yrs. Phy Therapy is going well and I'm starting to practice a lot again. I'm glad I've come across your content Clay, It's excellent !
For what its worth, for me its all about mental images. for the backswing my mental image is to stretch the clubhead as far back and as low as possible before hinging my wrists. on the downswing i try and picture the clubhead grazing the grass for as long as possible on the way through the ball. while it feels like im reaching back 20 feet with the club, and coming in super flat. the reality is that this mental picture i create for myself helps me build up a good rotation and keeps me from chopping down at the ball on the way down and through.
Clay, as your video shows with the driver. The back swing is wide and then the down swing shows your right elbow is tucked in. If I observed this correctly, what drill do you recommend to replicate the downswing with the right elbow tucked in?
This is true. I never tried to change my swing and the results is I have been playing 50 years and have never broke 40. The last10 years it’s more in the 50’s on 9.
I love this. I skipped the step of going to the range and hitting different clubs after hitting a bunch of pitching wedge shots the day before. Now I see why I shot a 97! Good stuff!
Clay, the tips work great for driver. Allows me to really swing it. When I use this swing with iron and full wedge I'm really sending it left with draw spin (I'm a righty). I'm thinking due to the suggested wrist hinge at setup. I think I naturally open face on driver and this closes it with good result, where as I'm fairly square with iron and wedge and this is closing me up. However id like your opinion. Thxx
@@TopSpeedGolf Clay you are a class act for taking the time to reply to your fans. Thank you. When using that ulnar deviation from set up and feeling it to the top is the goal to feel that all the way back and the the wrist set naturally. Or is there a point where your intentionally setting. I think I may be hanging on to the Ulmer deviation to long and its closing club face at top like DJ does. Problem is rest of my swing doesn't account for that so I'm not matching it all up
@@TopSpeedGolf did some watching. Your hips open at impact video I think is the cure. Need to practice my turn and my rotation at impact to square up when I contact the ball
You should do a video challenge for people who are subscribed. Have the prize be 2 rounds of golf with you personally on any course.. even poor ones you've never thought in a million years you'd golf on, even municipal courses. Have a flight take you directly to the winners home course and spend the day with them. One reason.. I've been recording myself all summer and watching MANY videos of your advice and others. It has GREATLY improved my game. I know for a fact, that if I have progressed as much as I have just by watching your videos, I can only imagine the feedback I would get while swinging the clubs with you and having the opportunity to watch it in person. Just an idea. I will tell you my progression and goals from beginning to end however, because you need to know you are helping those who want to listen very, very, much! May 23, MN, bought season pass to local course. First day there, with no videos, only previous attempts with no seriousness added...I shot 15 over on a 9 hole course. Fast forward to now...or about 1 month ago. I now shoot 2-5 over CONSISTENTLY. That is the biggest part. I've never been consistent until really applying myself a full summer..and sadly we don't get long summers here, so optishot is in my future for the long winters. My goal in the beginning of the summer was to shoot UNDER par at this course. I almost achieved it yesterday. I shot an eagle on a 287 par 4 while being 1 up. I parred the 8th and hit a terrible shot on my approach on the 9th hole, par 4, 389. I must of been nervous due to the situation I was in. I ended up 3 putting to double bogey -_-. Growing pains I suppose, but I almost achieved my goal thanks to you and being able to apply myself and really absorb your information. Long story... but I hope it thrills you to hear such positive feedback! -Thanks -Johnny P.
This video has definitely helped me get rid of my slice a bunch however sometimes I hit it and it goes straight to the right or straight to the left. is this merely a consistency problem where I just need to go to the range n keep practicing or am I doing something else wrong? and is there a video for what i’m doing wrong if infact I am doing something else wrong rather than just being inconsistent?
Hi, it's really impossible for me to say what may be going on in your swing. I would recommend searching our channel for videos on hitting it straight. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor

Thanks for this video. I'm a little surprised you didn't mention anything about:
- Using the ground to create / store / release energy
- Not moving the head too much (swaying / turning)
which would've been a good beginning / end to the journey through the different areas of the swing / body?
Those can be important areas to focus on too when looking at the swing.
Hi, thanks for sharing. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
Glad you're enjoying the instruction. 13 to 6.5 is significant improvement. Keep up the good work!
This WAS a great driver lesson.
Glad you think so!
That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. Keep up the good shooting!
Excellent video Clay I have been setting the wrists wrong and this has corrected my swing with the outside club set at pallerell, added tons of power with rebuilding ...thanks again your videos have totally helped with consistency and power ...awesome bro...
Glad to help!
Awesome video bro the set up one really helped too great info and thanks for the help...totally hitting the top speed site 😁
Amazing video, very clear and helpful for me
Glad you liked it!
Thank you partner, I think I speak for everyone when I say thanks for all the videos over the years, super smart dude.
Nice video, great tips. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much Clay. I`m finding my MOJO again and hitting those long drives again.
My pleasure!
Great video. Hit on a lot of things in trying accomplish in my swing
Thanks!
Fantastic Golf Coach... you have made me realize my mistakes. Thank you!!
Happy to help!
Thank you very much. Now I have fix my swing.
Excellent!
Thank you for your clear explanation so clear .. time to practice 😁
You’re welcome 😊
Thanks Clay. Those videos with the bent arm looks exactly like my swing with the resulting inconsistency. Will be practicing these tips. Great Video
Really good explanation and presentation to understand back swing
Thanks!
A lot of great tips in this video. Looking forward to putting some of it to use. Thanks Clay 💪🏼
Any time!
YOu make a lot of sense. Love your channel and instruction
Glad you think so! Play well!
Your teaching is spot on. Thanks so much
Thanks Wil!
That is why a golfer's follow through look is a
What a great, in depth video. Thanks clay. I appreciate your videos and knowledge
Very welcome
Clay, thank you for your videos. You've dramatically improved the way I play and i am enjoying the game more than ever. Thanks again.
My pleasure!
Sound simple and clear , easy to learn from your video. Great !
Thanks Lin!
Clay, great video with easy to follow instructions. One suggestion, after you hit the ball, could you reply in slow motion so we can follow what you just talked about? It would certainly help me notice the small details of your swing. Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Thanks! And thanks for the feedback. We do try to put a slow motion in every time but sometimes we forget. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
i did not know what my problem was with my swing until this video, amazing content!
Glad it was helpful. Play well!
Just started watching your videos. Clay you are awesome. Your videos are extremely helpful and are easy to understand. Definitely taking your tips and drills to the range. Oh and I’m right around the corner from you at Alaqua Golf Course.
Thanks Ryan!
Thank you Clay!!! Shoulders shoulders shoulders... Driver, Irons and putter.
Let your shoulders lead the way, and your bogeys will fade away!!! LOL
Question for you clay. Is it alright for me to crack my wrists just before my back swing?
Also my first 3 inches of my back swing are really quiet after that. Meaning slow.
Do you think this would cause me to not be as consistent? As it seems some rounds I'm coming down to hard
on my swing.
Awesome golf lesson looking forward to some more.
Great video and essential issue of the Swing too.
So true about building up the levels, great video bud.
Appreciate it!
Very informative, thanks Clay.
Thanks! My pleasure
Thanks Clay for all the videos! Have been struggling with my back swing a year or so now, and your videos, this and driver specific, have been a massive help getting back on track! Keep these videos coming as the community fully salutes you sir!
Hi, thanks for the comment. It's all our pleasure. Hope you're playing great! Quentin | TSG Instructor
This video may have permanently fixed my swing! I have been looking for that one tip that would do it and this video did it! Thank you! Thank You! Thank You! As a beginner I can start now start finding the range for each one of my clubs!
My pleasure!
I've been off with back pain for 2 yrs. Phy Therapy is going well and I'm starting to practice a lot again. I'm glad I've come across your content Clay, It's excellent !
My game has improved and I've gained a lot of distance following your videos and doing the drills.
That's great! Glad the instruction has helped. Keep up the hard work! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I would recommend our lag course on the website. Play well! Quentin | TSG Instructor
So Helpful..Point out ALL MY MISTAKESSsssssss..cant wait for range brother..
much thanks
My pleasure Johnny Li!
This is true. I never tried to change my swing and the results is I have been playing 50 years and have never broke 40. The last10 years it’s more in the 50’s on 9.
Thanks Clay! This is going to help me a lot this season.
Teach me how to effectively correct overswing and crossover. Or if you have any equipment, please let me know.
Thxx
Sounds like you're face is too closed and/or you're swinging too much in to out.
Have the prize be 2 rounds of golf with you personally on any course.. even poor ones you've never thought in a million years you'd golf on,
even municipal courses. Have a flight take you directly to the winners home course and spend the day with them.
One reason.. I've been recording myself all summer and watching MANY videos of your advice and others. It has GREATLY improved my game.
I know for a fact, that if I have progressed as much as I have just by watching your videos, I can only imagine the feedback I would get while
swinging the clubs with you and having the opportunity to watch it in person.
Just an idea. I will tell you my progression and goals from beginning to end however, because you need to know you are helping those who want to listen
very, very, much!
-Thanks
-Johnny P.
HI Johnny, thanks for the feedback. Glad to hear you're playing well. Keep up the good shooting! Quentin | TSG Instructor
I love all your videos. Do top speed offer golf schooling?
