    Great video, very useful to show HOW it happens and what it feels like when you are in. Cheers,

    Better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air than in the air wishing you were on the ground! Thanks for the upload :)

    Flying forward to the flatlands with big ears and accelerated wing is the best and easiest option!!

    Thank you brother for answering.
    Starting CP today :)
    Have decided on taking baby steps towards safe flight.
    Wife is no longer doing the course, i am :)
    I will NOT put myself in this kind of situation, or try not to, but if i do... big ears + speed bar and out of lift and into sink.
    Have great flights bro,
    Peace,
    Mike

    learn and acknowledge your limits and then enjoy flying, as the pilot said it was the wrong decision to launch, do it step by step and well guided for a suitable period, so you and her will love this great sport as my wife and me do since years

    Thanks for posting this, as a novice CP this is invaluable, in fact you have answered one of my questions - does my EN- A wing mean I am limited in height and soaring ability - clearly no. Thanks again.

    Man, You could just go forward the hill to the blue sky to avoid cloud influence.

  • @Tindar
    @Tindar 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Even though the cloud doesn`t look that enormous, and one can see blu skies around, it was a good decision for you as a pilot. If you don`t like it up there, get down... After all, it`s better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than the other way around...

    Why didn`t you fly further Away from that mountains to the Flatlands ? You will get always lift in Front of that Montains ....

    I'd have been tempted to go for a full stall - preferably if the wing I was flying was the one I did my SIV course on!

    no vario?

  • @NilfNilf1972
    @NilfNilf1972  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nope, I went out of big-ears for the spirals. The issue was that during the spirals, I got down, but also I got blown back into the lift again, so B-Stall would have had the same issue. ukliflieger (above) is right, speed bar + big ears was the best strategy. However, not freaking out when you're on speed bar + ears while your vario tells you you're going UP and BACK for several minutes was the tricky part...

    hey just a question. why didnt you just fly out towards the gap in the clouds. anyways glad your ok

    At least you got your spirals practiced. Happy that you made it back down safely. And as we all know; "It's a lot better to be down here, wanting to be up there, that up there wanting to be down"

    So you were spiraling with big ears then? How about a b-line stall for coming down.

    Please some experience flyer tell me what should/could have been done in this situation. Always read Fly straight and away from lift.
    We are about to start paragliding course and this video is making her think she would NOT handle this. I'm starting to think the same to be honest :(
    Of course i would NOT fly there that day without evaluating the sky beforehand but if that were me or her... i'd s..t my pants.
    Also, how hard are these spiral to maintain ? Doesn't this make you dizzy ?

    this is a good illustration of compounding errors in judgement and poor perception of reality. Spirals still near the windward slope are a waste of time and inneffectual, when you had to push upwind no more than another few hundred yards to get out of the ridge lift entirely. If indeed the wind was strong, then spiraling close to the windward side of the ridge is even poorer judgement, given half the time in a circle you are heading down wind.

    Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think you can spiral with big ears unless you are a weight shift ninja! (Your hands are pulling the ears so you can't use the breaks) It is my understanding that a deep spiral is the fastest decent technique (short of a full stall) but it is difficult to maintain due to the G forces. B-line stalls work better than ears but they can be tricky because you are flying close to deep or parachutal stall. Of course any of these risks are preferable to cloud suck!

    @TheParabolous Well... that's what I tried for over an hour (most of the flight I am headed towards the valley, but I just cut that footage away).
    The biggest mistake was to launch when I was on a rather light, slow wing, putting me in a worse situation than many other in the air that day.

    I'm glad to see, that you got down well :)
    I'm sure that you really learned a lot this day.
    BUT: For sure it is a good idea to hold the spiral a little, but you should be careful on gliders with less safety, because not every glider stops spiraling automatically. If you fly an EN-B, EN-C or EN-D glider, the glider could perhaps spiral to the ground if the pilot doesn't stop the spiral actively. And if you really hold the spiral to long you could to lose consciousness, so you wont be active.

    Hello Nils, I am just curious, how was the wind at the take off. strong ? were you able to go forward after you took off ?

    Nice video, I like the way you make the comments.
    But, as others have already pointed out, the spirals that can be seen in this video are very moderate, some people wouldn't even call them that. One 360 in this video takes about 4 seconds, in my last spiral, admittedly on a wing with shorter lines, one 360 takes about 1 second.
    (Google 'first SIV flight Goose', and skip to 2:40 if you want to see it)

    Good job. Nothing worse than that feeling that your doing everything you can think of ( Big Ears and speed bar) to get away from that cloud and that ridge and you're still going up and backwards. Makes you think twice about a Spiral Dive too! That was a nice tip from that other pilot about diving with one ear on. Not sure how stable that would be? How long was that flight btw?

    Big ears or b line stalls might work better.

    The hole time i watched this i kept saying.push out front into the green field ...you never even got pass the river wash below
    .mitch was right.doing (aka 360s/wanna be spirals) in the ridge lift was a waste. ..full bar.giant ears...or a bline is were you were at...congrates on geting down.to fly another day.chock it up to a learning experience. ..
    The sky told it all even before you launched...
    Cume clouds every were an that haze wasnt smog....big air when that an cumeis are around.. love that site

    • @tkrafael
      @tkrafael 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kendawwwwg big ears in such condition could be useless if the lift is too strong. The best to do in that case was to go into green field to avoid cloud sucking and then apply descending technics.

  • @Orcamaniac1
    @Orcamaniac1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Prevention is better than cure...but we're only human. Possibly a good option would have been to begin a tight spiral and collapsing your top most wingtip as you would a bigear, a second line if needed.

      Andrew Bell naw bro, big big ears and full speedbar enter a sat, thats whatcha do.

  • @bmradux
    @bmradux 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sorry mate, that was not a cloud-escape spiral! You need to go to the point where the wing is locked horizontally, and You risk loosing consciousness due to the 4-5G. Not saying that I had the ballz for it. Once in the same situation, I finally went for a B-stall.

  • @FlorianHumanistic
    @FlorianHumanistic 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Fu.k...Guess I would have gone for speed bar + b-line-stall in order to leave the lift, following with a bit harder spirals.I've been to a centrifuge once, so I know what it feels like, before I'm going to lose consciousness. Knowing that will make one more selfconfident in spirals.
