    The best video on paragliding I've seen. Without speaking a single word you've demonstrated and explained the best basics. Cudos

    I love you man God bless you for posting this. I just bought an AB salon 9 paraglider and the lessons to fly it. When I leave the school I will be all alone there's nobody else flying in the area. These very simple primitive basic decision making things get left out by all the people who want to show you how good they can do a stall.

      Hi Mark glad you like it and you can get something out of it, such an old video now and filmed with the worst camera in the world. I probably should remake this. Happy flying mate, see you on the hill 👍

      @@hoverparagliding all the fancy camera work and graphics and computer work and everything else are pretty much meaningless. This breaking down into atomic particles of ideas so I can use the same particles to fly my molecule is really a beautiful rare thing.

    Of course Greg is absolutely right, turning in the lift is essential, but at the time I had only 1 or 2 hours post cp, flying in thermic conditions wasn't a pleasant experience, and with that lack of experience mistakes will inevitably be made, and you may find yourself in a similar situation.
    This is aimed at low airtime pilots and around 1 to 5 hours part cp, but to answer a question, do I think that 50 hours post cp is low air time, then the answer is yes!
    Safe flying!

    Fellow low air time pilot here. I just completed my P2 on Saturday, but not before making the same mistake featured in this video of failing to turn away from the ridge. The causes leading up to the incident included dense air traffic, low air time, and unfamiliarity with the Venturi Effect (. Unfortunately, I was not as lucky as the pilot in this video and ended up crashing into the Gash on the South Side flight park at Point of the Mountain, UT. The major takeaways I gathered from the experience are the following: 1) When in doubt, turn away from the hill; 2) Considering my skill level, I should probably not fly in dense traffic; and 3) Avoid Venturi’s because they are dangerous. Thanks for the video!

      Out of curiosity, why would you always want to turn away from the hill? Aren't you going close to the hill go gain lift from the upwards pressure?

    • @Andyg2g
      @Andyg2g 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@aborum75, I was referring to when you are concerned about the air traffic and congestion while ridge soaring. It is always best to turn away from the hill and fly away from the ridge to give yourself extra clearance should you find yourself in a position where you are beginning to get boxed in. Though yes, in general, you want to stay somewhat close to the ridge if you are trying to find lift.

    Love the vid, many thanks for that
    My partner and I are both doing ep/cp in the next month, and this has put her at mind at a bit more ease about doing it
    Been waiting 7 months for right conditions

    • @hoverparagliding
      @hoverparagliding  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like the video, enjoy the course, I would say though that conditions are great for paragliding in the next month yes, but for beginners is better to do it in the winter months. It'll be quite thermic out there this time of year, and not ideally suited for learning. On the right day however you'll have some great flying, mornings and evenings will be best time to fly for beginners this time of year. You'll see what I mean soon enough. Learning the weather is most important, learn the conditions and read the clouds. Good luck, enjoy and see you on the hill.

    As no one else has mentioned it..
    All pilots should remember it's best to do a full check of controls 'free & clear' before launch!
    In this case the right brake (line) had a 'twist' due to it having been passed through the 'loop' between the brake line and the back riser (above brake pulley) on a previous flight perhaps. This can be seen most easily at 7:49 and 9:16 in the 'twist' of the brake pulley tab, one of the ways (in addition to visual) the pilot can identify this brake problem is in the increased vibration due to the line rubbing against the side wall of the pulley.
    NOTE it is possible to have a pulley/line 'fold over' and jam/lock so the pilot holding the handle can not adjust (both + and -) the brake position while tension is held on! Letting go the handle and 'reach above' to fly the line directly... THEN (once clear of other aircraft etc) the pilot can 'flip' the free handle into the correct position is the best option! :-)

    It has been noted that recently there have been a number of new pilots on the hill who have had no training or not completed training turning up on the hill with paragliders bought on eBay or wherever, please do not watch this video and think that paragliding can be taught via TH-cam, it must definately cannot. Please seek tuition and the proper qualifications from your local paragliding school before attempting this sport, it's extremely dangerous in the wrong hands, and we have seen to many accidents recently. This video is for fresh post cp pilot's, it's been helpful to some so would be a shame to remove it. Cheers, safe flying!

      Chris Hover It baffles me that people would try learning this without professional help. I mean you must be some kind of lunatic no? lol! I love this kind of videos though as it gives me a good impression of how paragliding works since I have some interest in trying it out. Though flying must be amazing. I get the feeling that when you have to fly like this with 50 other people it would quickly take the magic away and rather annoy me constantly having to watch your back so you don’t crash into someone.

    I agree with your comments especially as you were approaching the trees. I ended up with a right spiral tib and fib fracture in a similar situation in 2013, however i was unable to push left away from the ridge as another pilot was on my left heading in the opposite direction and thought it best to prepare for a slope landing, unfortunatley catching my right foot on a clump of old bracken when i took my legs out of the pod.a very bad choice.

      thehoova1 Doesnt sound pleasant mate, but sounds like you had no choice, and probably unlucky. how long did it take you to recover from that injury? are you back to flying now?

      Allan Thompson thanks very much, read through the comments on here, there's some useful tips, particularly from Gregg Hamerton. Good luck with course, now is the time to do it, conditions are laminar at the moment, albeit windy, but come April it'll get too thermic for beginners. See you on the hill sometime, and check out my car now recent videos on thermalling, not some much a tutorial, just a feel of thermic flying.
