  • From Bollywood movies to Indian ads, it’s the one thing all depictions of Indian women have in common. But why are we obsessed with women having long hair?

Kajol was my IDOL and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai was my favourite film BECAUSE of her tomboy status since it was the only Bollywood film at the time with a girl with shorter hair... when she grew up to be super femme, it broke my 7 y/o heart.

tbh bollywood has actually taught us that sanskari = lambe baal, suit salwaar and bhakti. if a girl has got high temper and spirit, if she is outspoken than she is a friend but a girl who loves to sing om jai jagdeesh than definitely she is *"marriage material"*

To be honest, hairfall doesn't reduce when you cut your hair. Because the no. of strands you are losing is still the same. When you bunch up all of your fallen hair, it'll obviously give a perception that you've lost more hair when each strand is very long.

My family, neighbors, peers were like "itna sundar baal the kyu ktwa diye? Kya hua tumko? Pagal ho gayi ho kya ye kya kar diya apne hair ko? " But I have a supportive frnd as well. She also chopped her hair off coz she wanted it to do from so long but couldn't coz of "log kya kahenge". But my elder brother is really appreciating, he didn't say anything about my short hair. "Uske bal uski marzi, if she feels good in short hair then let her be".I remember my father getting angry on me for having a haircut, " Ye kya kar liya apne baalon ka, ache ghar ki ladkiyan ye sab glt kam nhi krti ab nhi krvana kabhi" . Grow beyond the body image, maintain the body as you have to live in it, but considering hair to be part of personality is quite strange, as not all people have hair according to their personality

    My personal experience.
A Man fell in love with me, while I treated him. Later he confessed his love for me over the phone. After 6 months of consistent communication.
    He finally proposed to me.
He asked me to send a decent picture f me to him so that he can show to his parents. Then when we video called eachother I had short hair. He was surprised and feared his parents reactions to my picture.
Since he fell in love with me when had long hair. It disgusted me since hair can be grown or cut according to the choice of a woman but in Indian society it also should suit the preference of your family , suitors and their relatives first.

I've always had very long hair since my younger days. I was appreciated by my relatives and other people for having very long and straight silky hair. When I grew up, I always wanted to chop off my hair into a Pixie or a Bob but my parents never allowed that. Coming from a middle class family, I was not allowed to cut my hair because I had very long hair. By the time I started working, one fine day I decided to chop my knee length hair to waist length. That day my father said nothing, but he did not talk with me for one month coz how can I decide such a big thing by myself? But my hair grow back long. Now I am married and my in-laws love my long hair too and they are emotionally and lovingly, not forcing, but telling me not to cut my hair as they are the sign of Goddess Lakshmi.
I love my hair too, but shouldn't it be my choice to have the hair of my preference?

NO GIRL WANTS SHORT HAIR . HAVING HAIR CUT IS NOT THEIR CHOICE AT ALL. They have their hair cut to short because they don't have beautiful long hair. Their hair are too messy to give them beautiful look so they prefer to have them cut . This happens when any young girl/women's hair lack quality. They are not manageable. Uneven , rough , excessive hard , split ended , not dense or so less that neither can be braided to plait nor locked to a stylish bun . So no other way except to have boy cut or at their best bobed cut....भयंकर मजबूरी... what to do.. झाडू broomish hair ,,
The biggest obsession is the presence of feeling in some women ie WHY MEN DO NOT DISLIKE LONG HAIR OF WOMEN... This the hidden obsession that makes a short hair women to teach men what personality means... actually some women are complexed of not having good hair to grow them long rather than men are obsessed .
Now we come to choice... many time some long hair girls choose to have their hair cut... Because they know they have good hair and can grow them long any time.
Now boys also have choice to keep long hair though they appear like a beer if they got dark or dusky compaction. But whatever ...no doubt they have choice to do so.

We're again seeing indian pseudo-feminists in the comments. The society prefers longer hair on women just like a six pack man is preferred over a dad bod. This doesn't mean that we're mocking girls with short hair or men without six packs. I see nothing wrong with the songs promoting longer hair, cuz accept it or not, they do look elegant the same way a six pack man looks more handsome than someone with a dad bod. Now if you're literally being abused or forced against cutting your hair, then it's something to do with the people around you. If my girlfriend asks me what hair suits hers I'd say longer, now that doesn't mean I'm enforcing it or being possessive, it's still her choice and I'd love her the same.

The Science Behind Why Men Find Long
Hair Attractive some time no matters how a woman looks physically.
Luscious locks teaming with life have been a striking staple of longed after ladies for centuries. When men are asked to rank features they find most attractive on the opposite sex, maintained manes always dominate the list. The truth is that long hair triggers a primal, instinctive response within men. Evolutionarily speaking, long hair serves a purpose. Here’s the real reason why your man can’t keep his hands off of your tresses.
    1)Fertility
Men are designed to seek out specific physical traits in women. Amongst these are large eyes, pouty lips, child bearing hips and of course, long hair! Heavenly long locks represent a woman’s genetic code; if her hair is voluminous, thick, long and lovely, chances are she has genes worth replicating. The fact that a woman is able to grow healthy locks indicates that she is virile and strong.
    3)Youth
Of course there are exceptions, but typically longer hair is equated with youthfulness and short, severe styles with age. Girls and women on the cusp of puberty often sport flowing locks.
    3)Femininity
Although men used to sport untamed tresses of their own, men and women are primarily attracted to one another due to their differences. Feminine traits are attractive to men precisely because they are different and not masculine. Nothing is quite so exquisitely feminine as long locks. Mermaids, Disney princesses, Renaissance paintings - all of these art forms depict women with flowing tresses. Men like your long hair for the same reasons they like high heels and dresses; because it looks feminine.
    4)Variety
Long hair affords the wearer far more variety than shorter styles. You can wear your hair straight and smooth, wild and wavy, half up, half down, pinned, in braids - the options are endless. This versatility is attractive to men. Experimenting with your style demonstrates adventure and excitement. As men are visual creatures, dramatically different hairstyles are hugely appealing.
    5)Responsibility
Caring for long hair isn’t easy. Heat styling, weather conditions and our lifestyles can all wreak havoc on our hair. As such, growing long, healthy hair signals a degree of commitment and responsibility, qualities which are both attractive to the opposite sex.
    6)Elegance
Long hair is an art form in itself. Have you ever caught sight of a well maintained mane billowing in a summer breeze? Men are genetically hardwired to notice these visual cues. Hair serves as a frame to illuminate the beauty of the owner
    7)Shortage of long hair women
Now a days very less number of girls and women are found who are being with long and healthy hair. So any thing enhances women 's beauty which is less and not very common are given more importance..
    8) health
Long hair women are usually healthier than short hair women under same parameters and conditions. The hair receives almost left over nutrition alloted by brain. Because Brain also knows that hair are secondary requirment. It proves how excellently the long hair woman's body is in condition of ideal nutrition that even her hair are long, healthy, glossy.
    9)complete woman
Scientificall its not proven but you do data base study you will find the divorce cases,,pre marital affairs, cases of betrayal are almost negligible in numbers in case of long hair women. This is perfectly true. Thats why IF POSSIBLE always prefer to marry a girl who has at least hip length hair. I am 100$ sure such women are not only loyal women but free from feminism and truely family women like a goddesses in real world .Real Rapunzel.
Men love women's long hair but they are not obsessed. Long hair women look more feminine. Long hair increase beauty look of women 30 to 45%. It gives a different attraction. And its natural. But it doesn't mean men are obsessed.
Last but not least...Its men's choice and they have right to Make their choices what they love, like.. They love long hair of women its their choice not any obsession. Women have freedom to keep their hair as they like, long or shirt or Head shaved. But what men love or like is men's choice.
Now days we miss actresses with natural long hair.. Even a few women have naturally long hair. In fact out of random 1000 women hardly 1or 2 women have long glossy hair.
We badly miss long hair women. Long hair enhances women's beauty by 25-30%.
If a woman has long , dense glossy hair , no matters if she has short height, FAT chubby body , too much skinny body , very thin, very tall body.. Her long hair covers her such of her deficiencies up to great extent.
Use of hair colors, chemicals, hair packs,, straightening heater have lead most of women to the stage that even men may have their pubic hair better than their hair if they don't shave.
Long hair play, long hair smelling are also some romantic practices loved by men. In fact it's men's natural CHOICE or INCLINATION that they perceive long hair women more feminine..But most of the men Hat the exercise in which a women use artificial long hair /hair extensions to be a fake beauty.
Men always loves long hair of women... BUT it doesn't mean they are obsessed to them...Or they don't like women (wife/girlfriend) whose hair are short.
LONG HAIR ARE NATURAL ORNAMENTS OF WOMEN. NATURE'S GIFT TO BEAYTIFY WOMEN. THOSE HUSBANDS ARE LUCY WHO COULD ENJOY HAIR PLAY OF THEIR LONG HAIRED WIVES.

I find it interesting that long hair as a sign of beauty has also always been for the man's pleasure. Uncovered, and untied hair used to invite my grandma's scorn for my sister and my mother. Styling, and generally doing anything with your long hair for one's own self image was discouraged and in some cases taken as a sign of 'ladki bigadna'. Hair represents beauty, femininity and tied hair represents servitude. Draupadi famously kept her hair untied as a constant reminder to her husbands that she was publically stripped and dragged through the court, and that if they were good husbands their wife wouldn't have to keep her hair untied in public. Ironically, she was, through no fault of her own, also at the centre of the Mahabharata, and has always been blamed for it; rather prescient, with how women are always blamed for anything that goes wrong with their man or their families (see Rhea). Draupadi is depicted as the destroyer of several clans in the Mahabharata and her untied hair are the most identifiable of her physical features.
For how everyone encourages girls in India to grow out their hair to be beautiful, it is always reserved for the privacy of their bedroom and for the pleasure of their husbands.
I don't know what my point is, was just thinking about Draupadi and how she's the most famous woman with untied hair in our mythos outside of divinity.

But as an Indian household, hair had to be tamed. But short. Being a chubby kid, too short hair would make me look even chubbier. But since my narcissist father hated long hair, he used to lie to me that long hair meant useless & stupidity while maintaining short hair meant u have a job & intelligence. But after moving out for college, I fell in love with my hair and started growing it out. It was a war at home. Now after years without a haircut, my hair is waist long. But due to lock down I had to come back home, and my dad threatens me every day with a scissors that he'll chop it off. I don't know about professional, but tying your hair is actually practical. I loved keeping my hair open whenever I went outside, but as soon as I came home, all I see is hair damage. Imagine having long open hair at work; sweat, tangles and what not. And for women working outdoors, armed forces, laboratories and the police forces, it is close to impossible to keep their hair open during work.
I have waist length hair. In the lockdown period, I am oiling and braiding my hair daily, and trust me, my hair have become stronger, thicker and easy to manage(not going outside resulted in less pollution, which in turn improved my hair quality). Daadi galat nahi kehti hai.

I find this unfair too. I always wanted shoulder length hair but my mom forced me to grow hair even though I never wanted to. She says long hair makes a girl prettier. She grew up in a household where women were considered less important than men. She was told to grow her hair out to be feminine. She was taught that women should give up their passion, hobbies and jobs after they marry. So I don't exactly blame her for what she says to me. It's the parenting that made her to be this way.

I just can't understand why do people pick up anything to make a big fuss about it. Long hair is beautiful and hard to maintain that's why working professionals prefer short hair. Schools have a discipline code, both genders are expected to groom it in a neat way. And what are these movements about "curls are beautiful" or "black is beautiful", people have different tastes, some like fair skinned people, some dark....would we now term this as racism too?. Discrimination exists in all forms, who you decide to be friends with or marry is also a form of discrimination, since personal choices are always there. If short haired women want to be depicted as beautiful , they must produce or make films themselves. Nobody here is entitled to do things their way. I have never seen men protesting about actors depicted with a hot body or a chiseled jawline. This says a lot about men, they get their damn things done and own up their own shit, and this is why they run the world. As a women, i don't think anyone has to mould their preferences in order to soothe my insecurities. We must love ourselves and it's high time you realise there is no such thing as a society, there are only individuals.

Agree. If this is fair, it is only fair that why men with six pack are seen as hot and someone datable(straight away), why not men with tiny bodies or far bellies? Because believe it or not, a fit person is a sign of good genetics and health. Similaryl women with long hair. Almost everybody can have short hair but only a few have long hair. Why? Genetics! Isn't it the main though? No matter how complex we act, ultimately our life reduces to a simple "find the best mate and pass on the genes"

I have long hair. Trust me it's very difficult to maintain and manage it. I like army hair cut because it's convenient for me. Also having long hair for those who like it is fine too. Long hair doesn't suits everyone. We should choose our haircut according to our convenience and our outlook. If long hair is convenient for you, nobody is stopping you from growing it. But cutting hair short is not a sin. It's our choice whether our hair should look long or short.
