great video; thank you. I’m involved in radio operation in foreboding distant terrain, inclement everything and far away from pavement. Having cross-band repeat has solved comms problems for me for 25 years or so doing SAR.
Thank you for showing what the FTM-500 can do! I do think Yaesu missed not allowing digital crossband for a simple reason. In that emergency you described the data features of system Fusion would be quite helpful essentially pictures to show damage.
Thank you I appreciate your work I have an old Standard crosband battery is dead and can't change it, so I'm looking for another radio. Thank you your a great help N7XDO
Can it be configured to act as an emergency same band repeater? Like receive on 147.330, yet transmit on -0.6 (146.730) or +0.6 (147.930)? Or does this only work cross-band? I saw it allow you to set the bottom frequency to the same band at 8:31. I ask because when hurricane Helene came through East Tennessee, there were repeaters that were offline, and I like to imagine that a mobile rig could try to make its way to the top of a mountain and provide weak yet effective comms in such a situation.
Good Information Freddie. As for Allstar I know the SKYHUB link system which is a big Hub Node operation are using I believe DV Switch to bring the digital systems into their analog hub system. Not sure how they do it but one day I came into the system on analog and talked to a guy on System Fusion over the analog hub. Not sure if it would work in a crossband situation. But someone out there may know.
I am so relieved to see that nobody complained about the kerchunks! (it's just not that big of a deal, IMO) After watching this video, I'll need to go back and check out x-band on my FTM300. I seem to remember that I'm unable to change x-band frequencies on the fly while in that mode...but I don't remember if that's from reading or trying! Thanks!
Thanks. Who's fingers did you break at Yaesu to get that info? I like to program my HH with 2 channels that I call X band and Y band. X-band works thru the repeater as normal. Y band does not have a transmit tone. Assume you are deployed to an aid station with a couple of other hams. The Y band channel allows them to talk amongst themselves without going through the repeater but they still hear net control through the repeater. The "local" frequency needs to be simplex. 73's N5APC
We saw you can’t change from FM to digital while in X-BAND mode. Does anyone know if you can change the frequency of A or B without exiting the mode by powering down/powering up regular and then changing channel before repeating the sequence to turn on cross-band
You go from Steven Hawkins mode to normal voice. I really don't understand why people use DN when just talking. DN quality is just horrible. VW is fantastic
SO I have a question. Thinking of getting one, If I set the FTM in X-cross to my allstar link, and the other side to UHF, and ftm 500 is on my outside antenna could I use my handheld to talk to ftm 500 on uhf and enter DTMF to switch nodes so that I end up with a long range ALLstarLink setup. :)
Nice test!👍
Thanks Man!

It’s cross band repeat only. 73

Interesting Freddie. Maybe a new firmware release could fix D>D x-repeat.
That would be REALLY Cool!!

My radio shows the cross and working but no audio is going thru. Simplex to simplex or simplex to repeater. FTM 500.
I think they use DV Switch with a combination of MMDVM devices to bridge the digital to the analog hub. Way above my paygrade.
Nice video Freddie. Wonder if there’s a difference if you set it to VW instead of DN.

What mount is holding the breakout box? I have a ram and I'd love to use that space above the display head like you are

Yes I believe you could.
Will the radio ID itself in crossband repeat?
I’m afraid not. But that would be a useful feature.
