My mom scored in the genius range when she was administered an IQ test, and it didn't do her anything great in life, due to other issues (Child abuse when she was little mainly and other issues in the life she was dealt). She could read at an adult level at 2 years old, but life gets in the way of anything like that (teen pregnancy, marriage, dropping out of school from all of this, etc, though she did go back and get a couple of degrees later in life.). I scored in the average range on an IQ test I was given as a kid, and I'm okay. Though I wish I was smarter too. lol I think I got some strengths like strong critical thinking skills thanks to my mom. And she could outwit anyone if she wanted to, she could get shit done that other people couldn't manage, I always admired her ability to accomplish things others gave up on, and wish I was more like her.

And he must have known because he insisted on looking for only one type or brand of medication for it. #2 - Even if they'd had headlamps, how much time would they have had to react to seeing something across the run before they hit it at speed? #3 - I've seen enough Mr B vids to know not to go into narrow passages, ducts or tubes, even horizontal ones, let alone vertical ones - this scenario of narrowing chimneys has been played out more than once. I suppose it goes to show that, no matter the IQ, being drunk or high means all bets are off. Maybe a higher IQ just gives you more creative ways to screw up.

Supposedly, you can teach a child any language before 5yo and they will switch without having to internally translate, was what I learned on a science show about the brain. So if your wife knows Spanish you should teach your baby both English and Spanish just by just speaking in both and watch how it happens. It's a wonderful thing! Sounds to me most like severe, unmedicated paranoid schizophrenia or something adjacent. I only have schizotypal disorder but some aspects of it were reminiscent of reality-disconnects I myself have experienced, only much longer-lasting and of course, much more severe. For example, having the gash in his shoulder, seeing the oil from the plane and then putting it in his wound is something I can see myself doing in one of my glitch moments, where my consciousness is suddenly so far away, that it's more like observing a dream in 3rd person, that you don't become conscious of until you've woken up from it. They only last a few seconds for me though but I can hardly imagine the damage I could "accidentally" do to myself, if a "glitch moment" one day happened and then just... didn't stop. I don't know if that was his problem obviously, as we have virtually NO information about that guy, his history of behaviours, let alone his medical history but it sounds very likely to me. Him trying to kill his friend could be an inability to recognize him combined with a paranoid delusion. I myself have been unable to recognize my cat twice, but I didn't just not remember having a cat. I knew she'd been here the whole time but I didn't understand WHAT she was. She was sitting on my bedside table. Why, though? I couldn't understand the purpose of her sitting there, as if it was supposed to make something happen but I forgot what it was (flipping a light switch makes the light turn on/off, pushing down a door handle makes the door open etc). I had a faint memory of petting her by stroking her head, so I tried repeating that to the best of my ability, resulting in a very stiff, awkward pat on the head and just stared at her in confusion as I whispered "... I don't understand what you are...". The second time it happened, it was accompanied by a delusion. For some reason, I thought she was a man, put into the body of this animal. More specifically, that the man was my collegue and we were both undercover and he'd been chosen to be the pet, so we would appear from the outside as a harmless woman and her cat. I was so confused though, cause I saw a picture in my head that had been taken of the two of us next to each other and he was a black, somewhat average-looking man in fairly decent shape, a head taller than me with short afro hair (I saw him so clearly, despite him... y'know, not existing, lol) and I was a woman with zero muscles in my body, so why would HE be chosen to be the pet? If someone broke in and attacked us, we'd be screwed but I didn't know who to call to ask (good thing too, I suppose. That'd be hard to explain to the person later when the delusion ended). It lasted several hours and I was very self-conscious around "him" (my cat is a her), not wanting to change clothes while "he" was around and such. When the delusion had finally ended, it wasn't like I realised "ooooh, she's my CAT, her name is such and such and I was under some crazy delusion". Nah, it just sort of faded away and I went right back to feeling for her and being around her as I had before the delusion, not really thinking about how weird it was, that I hadn't been able to recognize what she even was earlier in the day. Yeah... Maybe unmedicated paranoid schizophrenia + some mental break or the former caused the latter entirely. That's my uneducated guess.

If you ever bother with an IQ test, know they don't mean much in reality to every day life. First off, you can score differently depending on so many different factors in the moment, stress level, physical health, maturity, etc, you might score low one time and years later score much higher if you are in a better place mentally, physically, etc. So yeah doesn't mean a ton. Someone can score low and still succeed better in life than someone who scores 'gifted' or higher, for instance. It's not just about intelligence at such a basic level, but also about experience, physical health, mental health, abilities, talents, knowledge, knowing how to USE that knowledge, etc. I've seen it first hand in my own family. You can also be crazy smart but abuse and traumatic and bad experiences can be very detrimental anyway, and also position in life matters. Like ff you're born in poverty, you may never be able to crawl your way out no matter how smart you are, likewise it's often, very very often, all about WHO you know in life rather than WHAT you know....

I have so many questions about the first story. What illness could he have suffered from to cause that big of a meltdown? What was the kind of medicine he needed and why couldn’t it be found in any other drug store around? There are so many questions and so few answers
Sounds to me most like severe, unmedicated paranoid schizophrenia or something adjacent. I only have schizotypal disorder but some aspects of it were reminiscent of reality-disconnects I myself have experienced, only much longer-lasting and of course, much more severe. For example, having the gash in his shoulder, seeing the oil from the plane and then putting it in his wound is something I can see myself doing in one of my glitch moments, where my consciousness is suddenly so far away, that it's more like observing a dream in 3rd person, that you don't become conscious of until you've woken up from it. They only last a few seconds for me though but I can hardly imagine the damage I could "accidentally" do to myself, if a "glitch moment" one day happened and then just... didn't stop. I don't know if that was his problem obviously, as we have virtually NO information about that guy, his history of behaviours, let alone his medical history but it sounds very likely to me.
Him trying to kill his friend could be an inability to recognize him combined with a paranoid delusion. I myself have been unable to recognize my cat twice, but I didn't just not remember having a cat. I knew she'd been here the whole time but I didn't understand WHAT she was. She was sitting on my bedside table. Why, though? I couldn't understand the purpose of her sitting there, as if it was supposed to make something happen but I forgot what it was (flipping a light switch makes the light turn on/off, pushing down a door handle makes the door open etc). I had a faint memory of petting her by stroking her head, so I tried repeating that to the best of my ability, resulting in a very stiff, awkward pat on the head and just stared at her in confusion as I whispered "... I don't understand what you are...".
The second time it happened, it was accompanied by a delusion. For some reason, I thought she was a man, put into the body of this animal. More specifically, that the man was my collegue and we were both undercover and he'd been chosen to be the pet, so we would appear from the outside as a harmless woman and her cat. I was so confused though, cause I saw a picture in my head that had been taken of the two of us next to each other and he was a black, somewhat average-looking man in fairly decent shape, a head taller than me with short afro hair (I saw him so clearly, despite him... y'know, not existing, lol) and I was a woman with zero muscles in my body, so why would HE be chosen to be the pet? If someone broke in and attacked us, we'd be screwed but I didn't know who to call to ask (good thing too, I suppose. That'd be hard to explain to the person later when the delusion ended). It lasted several hours and I was very self-conscious around "him" (my cat is a her), not wanting to change clothes while "he" was around and such. When the delusion had finally ended, it wasn't like I realised "ooooh, she's my CAT, her name is such and such and I was under some crazy delusion". Nah, it just sort of faded away and I went right back to feeling for her and being around her as I had before the delusion, not really thinking about how weird it was, that I hadn't been able to recognize what she even was earlier in the day.
Yeah... Maybe unmedicated paranoid schizophrenia + some mental break or the former caused the latter entirely. That's my uneducated guess.

I think the condition you were thinking of is DID, dissociative identity disorder, just letting you know a lot of movies misrepresent it, people with this condition are more likely to be the victim of abuse rather than abusers/killers

If you ever bother with an IQ test, know they don't mean much in reality to every day life. First off, you can score differently depending on so many different factors in the moment, stress level, physical health, maturity, etc, you might score low one time and years later score much higher if you are in a better place mentally, physically, etc. So yeah doesn't mean a ton. Someone can score low and still succeed better in life than someone who scores 'gifted' or higher, for instance. It's not just about intelligence at such a basic level, but also about experience, physical health, mental health, abilities, talents, knowledge, knowing how to USE that knowledge, etc. I've seen it first hand in my own family. You can also be crazy smart but abuse and traumatic and bad experiences can be very detrimental anyway, and also position in life matters. Like ff you're born in poverty, you may never be able to crawl your way out no matter how smart you are, likewise it's often, very very often, all about WHO you know in life rather than WHAT you know....
