With the remake of NieR Replicant making this once hidden gem available on a wide scale, this video is meant to help introduce newcomers to the series. This is the second video on this topic the first covers the pre-NieR events and Drakengard games. The NieR series is place of a long running chronology of games starting in the Drakengard franchise, the brainchild of Yoko Taro, and there are plot lines running throughout that converge in NieR Replicant and Automata.
The style of this video is similar to other lore analyses such as Foxcade and Clemps.

Hey all, hope you enjoyed the video! Would have had this out a little earlier...but I was playing Replicant :p
Some errors I noted: the cause of the black scrawl was not the replicants gaining sentience, but due to their gestalts relapsing or dying, and relapsed gestalts were actually few, and a majority of those fought are still coherent.
It should also be told that a lot of background information mentioned is actually only revealed in the source book grimoire noire.

I mean ending E feels like a win overall. But by that point everyone's gone through so much existential despair that we're all a mess when we reach that ending :')
The new ending of Nier replicant implies that Kaine is the blueprint for all of yorha due to clearly stating that some union of maso and technology was used to create the sudo-replicants you fight so that could explain why machines developed the red eye disease.
And why combat androids are females.
Ending E was created years ago before Nier: Automata as a short story.
@@dantecrailman8861 not exactly. The grimoire Nier short story "the lost world" was the base of ending E but there were some major changes and combined with the automata stage plays its entirely recontextualised.

im disappointed you didnt tell more about ending E in replicant. as kaine killed the memory of hook, the administrators were surprised of kaines potential and what the future will bring with this potential. her data was propably used for the A2 android, which would explain their similar characteristics and combat abilities
Also the fact that she gets an A2 skin kinda gives that away. Also has no one noticed that 2B and 9S are just different aged Nier and Yonah? At least that's what they look like to me.
That is basically confirmed; A2 canonically is based on the combat data of “a girl that held great love for her grandma”, and furthermore, 2B is based on A2 (to the point that A2 sees her for the first time and thinks “why is she wearing my face”)
Furthermore, 2B’s predecessor is a prototype named Number 2, which is implied to be a successor to the Administrators seen in Ending E.
Basically, every important female white-haired character eventually ends up as part of 2B.
(the other prototype, Number 9, basically created the whole cycle of wars seen in Automata; when 2B wonders if she’ll get the chance to kill whoever blessed her with that cryptic puzzle, she doesn’t know she already has, many times)
@@CookiePieMonster Without going into too much detail, A2 is canonically based on Kaine, and 2B is a successor to A2, so technically both are partly Kaine.
It is speculated that 9S is based on Nier but there is no actual information proving or disproving it

That info on Kaine’s data being in A2? It’s from a canon stage play.
Number 2 and Number 9? That’s from a canon concert.
If you go to Yoko Taro’s bathroom there is probably a canon bar of soap explaining Pascal is actually Weiss or something like that
(You can find the canon concert readings on youtube, translated to English by fans and read out loud by the actual voice actors with sound effects)

Drakengard walked so Nier (Gestalt) could run which in turn allowed Automata to fly.
Detail that was missed (because it’s super obscure):
The origin of YoRHa is actually an android named Zinna.
Zinna made two YoRHa android prototypes, Number 2 and Number 9. It’s heavily implied they’re exactly who you think they are.
Replicant’s ending seems to imply some form of relationship between them and Ending E’s Administrators, so it’s probably that they are a new version, or some form of continuation, of this system, at least on a deeper level.
Zinna also had the idea of fabricating the idea of humans on the moon, where in reality all that was there was a server with the last of humanity’s recorded data
Before he could finish the project, Number 9 killed Zinna and added the recurring self-destruct program program that would lead to the everlasting cycle of destruction and rebirth before uploading all the needed information to the Moon Server.
Number 2 then killed Number 9, to which he basically said “kill me again next time too”. This is presumably why 2B kept being forced to kill 9S over and over; he basically hard-coded it from the start, no matter what she wanted.
It should be noted that it doesn’t appear that either has any memories of this event in their current forms.
But yes, everything is 9S’s fault in a way.
The machine life form administrator, the Red Girl, sorta came to the same conclusion on her own after she killed the aliens (as stated in the video), and the two sides started an endless war
At some point, A2 was created based on Kaine’s data (most likely based on the data shown to have been collected in Ending E of Replicant). She was the only survivor for a highly fatal mission and was used as the template for the 2E (2B) model, with a lot of the same combat data.
So when you see 2B, in a way, you are looking at some combination of Kaine, the Administrator Girl, Number 2, and A2, even though none of them appear to remember their “ancestry” (save perhaps for the Administrator girl that personally saved Kaine’s)
9S also has similar ancestry, though it’s not known who he was based on (I speculate Nier but have zero proof)
And all of this very critical lore was revealed in… Nier concerts and stage plays in Japanese. I don’t blame anyone for not knowing the full story when it’s that hard to find.
tl;dr Kaine, the Administrator Girl, Number 2, A2, and 2B are all deeply related 2B had a part of all of them within her.
Also 9S (or his ancestor) just, created the whole crucible of Automata for everyone basically by himself.

@@popo-gl6ow at least in the game it's because 9s is a more advanced model so it always figures out that the humans are dead so I guess 2B has to kill him so as not to spread the secret.

Probably worth adding that P-33, and by association Kalil, is one of the key connectors in the two games as it is he who is the spark that creates sentience in the machines. He is referenced in the story Fire Of Prometheus, and again in one of the Automata vignettes that speaks of the god from the volcano.

Have you seen all of the YoRHa Dark Apocalypse content from FFXIV? The newest raid heavily implies a connection between the Red Girls and the Watchers.
I haven't gotten through all the content yet since I'm making sure I don't miss anything because I have a standalone video planned for Dark Apocalypse since it was the most recent bit of new canon we've gotten from Yoko Taro himself. I don't like to speculate too much in these videos that are more aimed at beginners, but I have seen some solid theories and I've got some of my own that I plan to include that point to a lot of parallels between the Red Girls and the Watchers, especially Manah, and even some tracing all the way back to the Intoners

its such a mind melding moment when kaim and the dragon gets hit by missiles, the fact you never notice until that point your in the real world and there is no way back is so daunting and realising it brings a whole level of respect to the series

Very well made video. I wish the game had an officially translated (dubbed in English) version of how Emil reacted to the alien invasion, right after Ending E. I'm surprised they didn't do it. It'd connect the two games beautifully.
True, they already have the Space War Drama CD so I'd be a matter of translating that. Even just some post credits narration from it or something could be helpful

I'm pretty sure in A2/Anemone's backstory about the Pearl Harbor Descent there have been cases where the logic virus (probably one not yet as sophisticated as the one seen at the end of Automata) has been cured.
True, there are some exceptions. Similarly, Inuart in Drakengard 1 was able to eventually break free of Manah's influence as well.

How the hell were you able to fit all the major plot points of both Nier games into a sub 15 minute video?
I basically try to make it the same way I would explain it to my friends who know nothing about the series! So for each point I ask myself how I would explain it if I was just sitting there talking with someone about it

Fun fact: Gestalt (Nier) and Replicant are both equally canon
You could pretty much argue anything that happens in these games is canon.
If Nier is based off drakengard’s alternate universe, that means there are multiple parallel universes. Literally anything that happens can be a path taken in a parallel world
@@spoonkies Confirmed by Yoko Taro directly though. Both are referenced in automata as well. What's interesting is I recall him thinking up an explanation for Gestalt and Replicant directly.

The biggest question I have is, who created the first YoRHA android thousands of years after humanity's extinction? Did the androids created since the Gestalt project survive long enough to create the first YoRHA android?

i just got replicant today cause its my bday today but i wanted to know how replicant crossed over to automata and ik i probably missed a key point in the replicant endings cause i skipped over cause if spoilers cause i just got the game but i didnt know that i need to pretty much play the 1st drakengaurd game to understand the events of replicant to automata which is ok and i gotta read the yorha book so i can get a better understanding of the story
Good explanation, from all Nier videos I’ve watched you explained it the best. Also does anyone knows why Nier came back from the flower as a kid?, like is there a symbolic meaning or smth? I would’ve liked if he came back as an adult :/
I don't think any concrete explanation is ever given, but I believe its because that was the age he first visited the Forest of Myth in part 1 of the game, so they gathered data on him for the new body at that age
since the guy somewhat fails to mention it, I would like to elaborate at 4:03 - When a gestalt relapses, it's corresponding replicant body gains the black scrawl, which will eventually kill it, meaning that replicants die at a very similar rate as the gestalts after the events of Replicant, despite the gestalt and replicants typically not sharing many personality traits. This means the replicants have also completely disappeared by the time the last gestalt has died about 8 centuries later. (This also could means there was only one gestalt and one replicant in existence at the end!)
What does a gestalt relapses mean?
That Caim is the leader of the Legion sounds false as Caim, being a Pactpartner, died with Angelus and neither had the time to break the pact before that happend (just like how Angelus had no time to make her wish).
Tho I still suspect that the Red Girls are based on Manah, the last prophet of the Cult of Watchers, but that means someone who knew about Manah told people about her and her purpose. The only people who could have done it are Caim (who is most likely dead), Angelus (who is 100% dead) or the Watcher themself.
Just a dumb realization but what happened to the timeline of drakengard did it end there and then ?
I want to see a game that covers Emil and his war with the aliens.

Although Automata itself seems to be wrapped up, I agree the franchise still appears very much to be unfinished with a lot of loose plot threads so I really do hope they get the green light for another mainline NieR game.

To answer the question, you're right in pronouncing it autómata. It's not a preference between that and automáta, the word is Greek and is written like αυτόματα, emphasis is on "o". You're one of the very few people on youtube I've seen that pronounces it right. People that go automáta, make me cringe and die a little inside lol. Whole time i thought automata was a prequel but it make since now when popala and devola talk about the ones whole failed to watch over the gestalt program. They died by nier’s hands.

Around 5:30 its not exactly the case, saying that the council of humanity founded yohra when it was yorha that founded the council of humanity (according to the conversation 9s has w the commander in route b)
I don't think I actually mentioned the Council of Humanity by name in the Project YoRHa section. Around that timestamp I mentioned that YoRHa decided androids needed a god to fight for and came up with the lie about humanity on the moon. Do you maybe mean earlier in the video when I said that members of the Army of Humanity founded YoRHa? If so I can see how that's confusing. The Army of Humanity is the original android resistance created thousands of years ago and the Council of Humanity is the moon server that sends fake human messages

These two games are so fascinating and weird with how it shifts from fantasy with magic to sci fi with robots. A story spanning thousands of years... humans going extinct... Lots of sadness all round.
So I have a question so all "humans on the earth are all androids" and if thats the case who built all the stuff on earth since then
Since the androids were designed to be as human as possible then in theory they should have the same ability to build things as regular humans, if not better. But since Automata takes place in an active warzone, new construction like skyscrapers etc, isn't a top priority. So the construction by the androids is mostly limited to basic shelter like the Resistance Camp and the larger things like the City Ruins and Amusement Park are holdovers from humans before the war

If you mean if the main character of Replicant and Kaine are in Nier Automata, then no they not in it. Despite any other special abilities they are still mortal and would have died after a normal lifespan like the rest of the replicants, meaning they both died well before the alien invasion takes place

it's Bittersweet at most bro lol there's a tiny bit more to the story that isn't in the game **Spoilers below** (kinda, I had to go out of my way to learn this. Also, this is all assuming that I remember the details properly.)
When the pods put them back together, 2B wakes up but 9S doesn't. She throws herself into the situation trying to figure out what was wrong, and repeatedly injects him with (I forgot the name of the compound) some sort of solution that's supposed to jump start his body back up. After announcing her frustration and questioning why it isn't working, her pod informs her that it's working exactly as intended - he'll boot up, but shut back down. The compound *is* jumpstarting his body, but at this point 9S no longer has personality data, memories, or any type of activity going on upstairs to *sustain* it. The pod tells 2B that 9S is essentially brain dead (during his fight with A2 where he was given the option to upload his data to the ark, he declined, lost his data, and opted to die right there on the battlefield.)
Seeing that there is nothing she can do, 2B holds her former sweetheart one last time, props herself up against some sort of structure (I think she was sitting with her back against a wall) and shuts down - she lays lifeless by his side, embracing him for the rest of eternity.
Feel free to correct me on anything I got wrong, the details are fuzzy, and I don't remember the exact name of the sources (one of them was the play script).
I think what you're talking about is the NieR Music Concert, specifically Farewell (the epilogue to Ending E). The version you described is the one in the original script book that was given as a pre-order bonus of tickets to the performance, however the version that was performed live has a different ending in which 9S wakes up with memory data intact because of the interaction between the android black box and the Ark, both being alien technology. According to a Famitsu interview with Yoko Taro he knew that people would have seen the script before the performance so he planned to make the change from the beginning to surprise them (more likely to mess with them). So technically both versions do exist, I personally consider the one performed to be the canon one but a valid argument could be made either way

Automata, like Automaton, is correct. But if you really want to reach, I could see Yoko using it as its mispronuciation is similar to "stigmata" which fits the story. lol

Au-tomata is the English pronunciation of the word. Auto-mata is the Japanese pronunciation.
They should just make a New game with same characters and game mechanics from Automata, with completely new places and worlds to explore.

The androids were created some time after Drakengard and before Nier Replicant. In replicant all the humans are already turned into gestalts.

I completed the first ending and still don’t understand how the opening of the game jumped over 1000 years into the future and Nier, along with Yonah, remained the same age
So the Nier and Yonah at the opening are the original, human forms of the characters. The Nier you play as is a replicant (clone), same with the Yonah your interact with. The Nier in the opening was the first Gestalt, and is the original Shadowlord who donated his body and DNA for Project Gestalt. I have another video that explains how Project Gestalt came about, but the TLDR is that they're clones.

Man this video saved me from losing interest in everything. After doing the 1st play through of nier. I was unable to do anything everything seemed meaningless. But now i feel i can go back and play both games to endings e to so the little bit better endings.
