이 찬송의 작시자는 미국 보스턴 태생의 조셉 헨리 길모어(J.H.Gilmore, 1834-1918) 목사이다. 그는 필라델피아 제일침례교회에서 시편 23편을 주제로 수요일 밤예배를 인도하고 나서 교회 옆에 있는 토마스 왓슨 집사의 집에 가서 교인들과 환담을 나누는 중에, 그리스도에게 인도받는 자의 즐거움과 평안이 얼마나 감격스러운가에 영감을 얻어 그 자리에서 작시한 것으로 길모어 목사는 작시한 찬송시 쪽지를 부인에게 건네주었다. 부인은 나중에 이 시를 잡지에 발표하여 세상에 알려졌다.
미국 메인 주 태생의 위대한 교회음악가 윌리암 베첼더 브래드버리(W.B.Bradbury, 1816-1868)가 우연히 이 찬송시를 발견하고 이 찬송시에 곡을 붙였다. 이 찬송은 미국 전역에 퍼져 나갔다.

주야에 자고 깨는 것

예수가 거느리시네
